"0" stars: not a DVD for music lovers.

The Korngold Violin Concerto in D major is 5 stars (fantastic), HILARY HAHN is 5 stars (I also assisted to her live performance of this concert in Dallas and she is a fantastic violin performer), documentary is good, but ...
mixing the Korngold concert with the documentary is a crime: it should come complete after the documentary (considering it is a $30 DVD).

I didn't pay attention to the track list because after 30 years and hundreds of 5 stars Deutsche Grammophon products buy, this is the first that got me disappointed and I really couldn't expect that.

Very nicely organized. Hilary Hahn is the best native born American violinist. As a nation, we need more of this kind of young people to make USA more cultural country. I am a little disappointed for not having she plays more familiar violin concertos composed by Brahms and Mozart in the video. Perhaps she would make music DVD that include those.

5stars - "Very Talented Muscian" (G. Lai)

For fans of Hilary Hahn's music, this hour-long documentary is a welcome look into her touring life and personality. Hahn guides us around her music academy, the Curtis Institute, there's some short performances and recording sessions, a glimpse into Hahn's life on the road and some interviews probing her views on musical interpretation, recording, and performance. The camera-work and editing are serviceable and about what you'd expect from a television program.

Hahn seems to do her best to entertain the camera but ultimately the program presents what Hahn is willing to share with the public. She specifically avoids divulging her views on anything extra-musical-- not a bad stance for a musician, of course-- but it means there's absolutely zero in the way of controversial, juicy or edgy material on the DVD.

There's some bonus scenes featuring her collaboration with Natalie Zhu, but both come across as a bit stiff in front of the camera here.

Overall, a decent hour of programming for fans of Hilary or classical music in general.

I found this video both enjoyable and informative. My son's violin teacher recommended it and I understand now that it's had a very positive impact on him as well as being enjoyable for the rest of us. If you don't understand French make sure to turn on the English subtitles for the brief moments of French. The subtitles do not intrude except when French is used.

This DVD will bring tears to your eyes. My father was a professional violist for over 40 years and got much pleasure from this video. My mother enjoys watching this video at least once a week. It will inspire any young violinst to play with more feeling and overall satisfaction. Just seeing the old footage of the great masters of long ago is worth your purchase. If you are a lover of music, you must have this in your collection.

I'm a musician/singer and saw the 6 minute video of Hilary and friends on YouTube. I loved it immediately. All of the participants were top-drawer, and seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. I had to have the CD. I play it over and over - basking in the joy that the performers take in playing/singing Bach. Hilary Hahn has a formidable technique and a radiant tone. Her bowing is exceptional as is her intonation. (I'm not a violinist, but as a singer, pianist, and teacher, I am acutely aware of some of the less than perfect pitches that abound. The singers are both wonderful - beautiful voices, great facility and musicianship and superb Bach interpreters. The orchestra sounds great, and the cellist, oboist, and organist can be praised for their crucial contributions to the whole. The conductor gives the solo instruments and singers the ideal support and tempi. (With one exception which I found a bit too fast - but that's just my personal issue. I would have found it difficult to breathe at that tempo.)All in all, I heartily recommend this CD and commend Hilary Hahn for coming up with the idea.

5stars - "Bach at His Best" (Peggy E. Skarry)

With so many artists re-treading the same ground in classical music-- endless recordings of the same popular warhorses, especially by violinists-- Hilary Hahn is charting her own path. First, these are not overly-recorded pieces: a couple selections from the St Matthew Passion and Mass in B Minor, plus a bunch of cantatas. Second, no other recording of these pieces (I listened to a bunch for sake of comparison) sound anything like Hahn's-- she places the violin and voices front and center for this recording, regardless of where Bach's sheet music and previous recordings place them in the orchestral mix, and that's a great thing. Third, Hahn continues her musical journey with this album, applying her signature style (clean, fast, crisp... dare I say, American?) to music that's never been recorded with that kind of violin sound.

In sum, this is new music. Which is exactly what classical music needs.

Baritone Matthias Goerne and soprano Christine Schäfer are stellar. Hahn shines. It's a great album. Looking forward to Hahn's recording of Jennifer Higdon's violin concerto.

4stars - "This music has never sounded like this before" (Erik Ketzan)

Toss three well-known musicians into a studio with minimal rehearsal, and this is what you get. The participants sound bored stiff, particularly Hahn. I'm generally a fan of her playing, but here she is monochromatic and inexpressive. Schaefer is clearly over the hill, and Goerne sounds indisposed.

All of these artists have done much better work elsewhere - both they, and Bach deserve better than this mishmash of "bleeding hunks", perfunctorily performed.

Poor ensemble at times, a thin orchestral timbre, dreadful tuning and wobbly technique from Christine Schaefer, and (dare I say it) a rather hoarse version of Matthias Goerne's once-lovely basso! Plus I find Hilary Hahn's playing utterly uninteresting. Who's to blame for such a botch-up, I wonder? Goerne has recorded some of the most mellifluous Bach ever, and though he's not ostensibly an "early music" specialist, he's shown great sensitivity to historically informed performance practices. Schaefer, I fear, just doesn't know much about such practices, or else she doesn't have the vocal technique to execute them. In any case, this would be my choice for least appealing 'topselling' CD of the year.

Despite an obvious effort to scale back on use of vibrato, there's still too much. Thankfully, Hahn's vibrato isn't as intrusive and ugly as others like Mutter and Menuhin, so we can still hear the music, and it truly is a brilliant performance.

I'd love to hear her revisit these pieces in a few years' time.

5stars - "The violin sings" (John Alsop)

I have only been listening to nine different recordings of these works, so I am in fact a complete novice in the field (and no musicologist at all), all the same I will try to give short comments on these nine interpretations that just might help you to choose which set you want to buy.

My personal favourite is no doubt John Holloway's recording (on ECM). When I first heard it I had only been listening to Shlomo Mintz (on DG) and Hilary Hahn (on Sony), so I feared the great Ciaccona/Chaconne of BWV 1004, because both of those artists' interpretations of that movement sounded like musical warfare, full of shrieks and noises. But Hallelujah! Guess what happened? The movement made sense to me for the first time - in Holloway's hands it is actually music! And the rest of the set also sparkles in Holloway's recording. What is so special about Holloway's version is that it has an almost spiritual, metaphysical aspect to it that nobody else achieves. It is a recording full of sublime transcendental beauty. That aspect of course is emphasized by the wonderful church acoustics (another great Manfred Eicher production from ECM). The booklet contains a performer's note and a few facsimile pages of Bach's beautiful handwritten score. If you are looking for just one recording, you don't really have to read further - I recommend that you buy Holloway's set.

If you have not bought Holloway's set yet, I have to say a little more about Mintz and Hahn: The aggressive approach in Mintz' Ciaccona/Chaconne is more or less present throughout Mintz' recording and in my opinion his playing does not quite justify it - it is "agitated" without having a reason to be so. If you want the sort of expressive power which Mintz is trying to put into these works Nathan Milstein (on DG) is a better option (NB: There is an earlier recording from EMI which I am not reviewing here). The problem with Hahn is that you are more impressed than moved; she plays fast - some might even say that she is superficial and skates over the essentials. Hahn also has a tendency to romanticize in the slow movements. Besides it is not a complete recording, she only plays half the works (BWV 1004, 1005 and 1006). However, her version of BWV 1006 is probably my favourite because of its exquisite, exuberant brilliance that fits that partita well.

Sigiswald Kuijken (on DHM) is almost as good as Holloway and he almost reaches Holloway's metaphysical heights, but his Ciaccona/Chaconne is not entirely perfect, it sounds like separate movements put together rather than as a whole. The performance has rougher edges than Holloway's, which can be a good thing. (NB: I am reviewing the 2001 release from DHM not the earlier release on the same label.)

Viktoria Mullova (on Onyx) and Rachel Podger (on Channel) are more down to earth than Holloway, but they both play beautifully. Maybe Podger is a somewhat overrated performer of Bach's music for solo violin. Her recording has been praised by numerous critics and it is so beautiful that I would like to like it more, but isn't it just a little bit boring? I am listening to it right now and again I get this sort of feeling: "Yes, it is beautiful, but why am I listening to it?" That question answers itself when I listen to Holloway or Kuijken. With Kuijken and Holloway playing the music explains itself, it says: "I will just explain how this sounds." If you are looking for clarity and serenity choose Mullova. Make sure you buy the new Onyx set not the old Philips release!

If you want the slow movements played slow and the rest played beautifully by a young talented violinist Julia Fischer (on Pentatone) should be your choice.

Henryk Szeryng's first recording (on Sony) from 1955 is very serious and intense, a haunting (but also demanding) experience. Szeryng later made another recording for DG but I have not heard it (yet). Of course you should expect less than perfect sound on a recording that is more than fifty years old.

Mullova, Kuijken, Podger and Holloway play period instruments.

Szeryng, Mintz, Milstein, Hahn and Fischer play modern instruments.

The first few times I listened to the CD of this soundtrack, I loved some of the individual moments, but overall the sequencing simply didn't feel right. Then I saw the film, and realized that this was at least partially due to the fact that the soundtrack recording is re-sequenced, presumably to provide a more favorable listening experience. So, I re-re-sequenced the CD tracks to follow the flow of the film and the overall experience is much more natural and dramatic. The most immediate benefit is that the opening track, "Rituals" which plays in the film over the beginning credits, is really the perfect music for establishing the mood of the piece, and is frankly an absolutely inspired and appetite-whetting piece. The flow from there is equally brilliant, culminating in the emotional climax of the score, especially "The Gravel Road" which is among the best pieces JNH has written, and finally "The Vote" which beautifully concludes the score and ties together many of its ideas.

One thing I should mention is that I think the film is pretty bad. Practically un-watchable even, although Newton Howard's music goes a LONG way toward making the experience enjoyable. Trust me, sitting through the film several times in order to identify which pieces goes where, did nothing but cement my poor opinion of the movie, and my extremely high opinion of the ways in which Newtown Howard almost redeems it.

I do think this is one of the best scores he has done, whether to a Shyamalan film or any other, and deserves a serious listen. Some of this music is absolutely sublime, and Hillary Hahn's playing has been justly praised. I give the music five stars despite the fact that a lot of the suspense/action cues consist of mostly noising clanking and thumping (JNH can write great action music, just listen to King Kong). But what is great here is truly great and I still go back to this recording over and over.

Anyhow, for those who are looking for the actual film sequence of the tracks, give this a shot:

I've been a huge fan of movie scores from as far back as I can remember. Some of my all time favorite composers are James Horner, John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman. Before seeing the movie, "The Village" I was unfamiliar with James Newton Howard's compositions. However, I was pleasantly surprised and captivated with the movie's score! Over the years, it has been one of my most listened to cds! I have a cd in my car, and I also have digital copies of the soundtrack on my computer and on my phone. The second track on the album which is, "What Are You Asking Me?" is by far one of my favorites! This is probably the most prominent theme throughout the movie and the soundtrack. The violin music absolutely tugs at your heart and pulls at every emotion, it's really unbelievable. All the tracks though are just incredible. The music is so emotional and just seems to pull you in from the very beginning. I've heard some incredible movie scores over the years, but this one ranks very high in my list. Probably in my top 3 all time favorite movie scores. If you don't own this cd I encourage you to get it. Even if you haven't seen the movie. It is well worth the money! I can't say enough good things about this cd...Captivating, emotional, beautiful...just an excellent soundtrack. A must have for anyone who loves movie scores, violin, or just amazing instrumental music. Check it out!

Evocative, haunting, romantic, earthy, gothic. My personal favorites are 'Rituals' and 'The Gravel Road,' but the whole album is a lush masterpiece.
