" Does this really eliminate 99% lead??? " (B. Roy )

Many consumers who buy this product believe that it eliminates lead from their drinking water. The product specs on Amazon also claims 99% lead removal.

When I examined their pitcher, I found a lot of legal stff at the bottom of the pitcher in very hard to read font. This alerted me - if a product does eliminate 99% lead, why would they not advertise it in big letters right in front?

Then I looked carefully at the box in which the replacement filters came in.

Turns out - The certification is on the side of the box - is again in very tiny font. So you will normally fail to notice it is in there. The only claims made are for copper, mercury and cadmium. No mention of lead. Why can't Brita tell us what the deal is regarding lead reduction in BIG COLORFUL font?

If you are using this product believing it to reduce lead levels - time to wake up. I'm going back to my earlier sears system which was NSF certified to remove 99% of lead.

PROS: Works as advertised, makes Baltimore water taste way better.
CONS: Every time I open the reservoir, I see what looks like pepper.
FINAL VERDICT: Don't have much of a choice when it comes to what filter you want to put in your Brita.
SUMMARY: As mentioned above in Cons, the filter appears to be causing backwash. Note, this is not going into what I drink, the other way around. When I fill it up with water, there is a top half (reservoir) that slowly allows water to flow through the filter and down into the bottom half. It's the reservoir that is filling up inexplicably with this stuff. I rinse it out and it keeps coming. But as long as it doesn't get into my drink, I suppose I can't complain. Just not too appetizing.

I'm glad I bought my Brita. The filter works great. Just be sure to soak it and run water through it a couple of times until the water runs clear. I check the water in a clear glass container because the pitcher is tinted and it's hard to see if the water is clear.

I have been using these for about 6 years now. The water tastes slightly better through this filter than tap water. About 95% of all liquid I drink is water, so this slight difference is important to me. To Brita, I wish you improve your QA process. About 1 in 4 filters has black stuff (charcoal?) coming out of it. This occurs both on the top and the bottom of the filter. I am very OCD, so I follow the directions exactly, which means that it's probably not my fault. I uploaded a picture for everyone to see (click on "see all customer images" at the top of the page). Still, even with this issue, I recommend this product because the filters are very cheap when bought in bulk and it does work, i.e. the water tastes better. For that 1 in 4 product with the defect, it can be annoying waiting for the charcoal to sink to the bottom every time I pour a glass of water. Also, I have to constantly remind myself that there's stuff at the bottom of the glass so that I won't accidentally swallow it. Thus, -1 star.

I'm a student at Case Western Reserve University, and on the 4th floor of my dorm building, the water out of every faucet tastes like iron pipe. Which isn't a coincidence -- it's probably carried in iron pipe.

Using the Brita pitcher here I was able to remove the poor taste and make the water drinkable again. Since the water was drinkable, I saved a fortune on bottled drinks. I'd recommend this to any of my fellow college students.

Brita has a good reputation and the pitcher looks great. But after you start using it for a while you see those blue carbon particles escaping the filter and entering your glass of water. I tried different things but it seems the defect is in how the pitcher is designed, because I had a less well know pitcher in the past and this never happened.

I contacted customer service and the very polite lady explained to me that it is OK if a few of them come out, because they are made from "coconut tree" or something. Still, these are supposed to be the carbon particles that filter the water, ie suck all the things we do not want to drink, so I consider this explanation poor and I am sorry to say I had to throw away the pitcher and buy another brand..Brita 42558 Aqualux Water Pitcher

This Brita filter is poorly built. The top constantly falls off when I try to poor the water. It doesn't snap in properly. Also, the little flap at the spout gets stuck sometimes and water spills everywhere. I bought a PUR filter now and am more happy with it.

I did my homework before ordering this pitcher. There are so many to choose from. This one meets our household needs. It is well designed, slim yet contains enough water, the lid is securely in place and the grip handle is a plus. I particularly like the filter change indicator on top. Have used for a couple of months now. Stores nicely on the shelf in my office. No accidental spillage, no messes. Other reviewers have complained about the top falling off when tilting the pitcher to pour. I simply lay one finger on the top when pouring and that works fine. As long as you're not tilting the pitcher to some high angle, I don't think there should be a problem.

We have been using the Brita 35530 Ultramax Dispenser for almost two years now, and we love it! We drink a normal amount of water, but we also prefer to use filtered water for making tea, cooking rice and other foods that absorb much of the cooking water. Our pitcher sits on the counter next to our fridge. My wife prefers room-temperature water, and I regularly fill up large glass bottles to refrigerate water for myself.

The good:

* Large size, holds a lot of water compared to pitchers
* Spout is easy to use, compared to lifting a heavy pitcher
* Easy to clean, no mildew or mold problems after nearly 12 months
* Water tastes great! We like it better than most bottled water.
* Brita filters are reasonably priced (we buy 3 at a time)

The not-so-good:

* Filter can be slow at times, you'll want to keep it full as much as possible
* Inner plastic part that separates the filtered and unfiltered water can be hard to remove from the main unit when it is time to clean. Patience is necessary.

That's it, I can't think of any other downside to this water dispenser. The filters are rated for 2 months of average use, and the electronic timer on the top shows one notch for every 2 weeks, so you can tell how much time your filter has remaining. But, even with our large water use, we often leave the filter in beyond the 2-month period. The water in our area is bad enough that we can taste the difference as soon as the filter is no longer working, plus we're just lazy sometimes, and I like to get the most use per filter as possible.

When it is time to replace the filter, I follow this process:
1. Put new filter in a glass with water to soak for 10-15 minutes
2. Empty dispenser, take it apart and wash everything (inside and out) with hot water and soap
3. Dry the dispenser with a clean towel and reassemble.
4. By this time, the 10 minutes are up and I can insert the new filter
5. Fill the dispenser completely with water (waiting for it to filter so that both the main compartment and the unfiltered compartment are full)
6. Drain the first batch of filtered water (we often keep it in plastic jugs for watering plants)
7. Fill the dispenser and place in desired location

This process can take up to 30 minutes depending on how quickly the filter works, so I usually do other household chores at the same time. If you try to replace the filter while doing nothing else, you may become impatient and frustrated, as a watched filter always works slower.

Bottom line: We love this dispenser and hope to enjoy many more years of use. Our average filter use is 2.5 months, and the dispenser is cleaned thoroughly each time, so we have had no mold or mildew problems.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to save money on bottled water and/or avoid using plastic bottles.

A great device to use in post filtration to remove taste of chemicals as it can filter out both chlorine & iodine, even after adding some to kill any micro organisms at a reasonable cost. 10 filter pack reduces costs for 20,000 liters of waters(5,000 gals. Amazon offers a tax free/free shipping alternate to save more money lowering cost to 1 cent a gallon w/10 filter pack. Can add tsp clorox (4ppm) to top part to disenfect water, yet filter out 96% of the clorox added in bottom part to yield healthy water.

No, the title of this review isn't warning you about making kool-aid in a water purifier. Rather to tell the truth about carbon filters. They don't go bad. I've been using this filter for 9 months now filling it up three times a day, but more to the point, I used to work with a large water filtration team in charge of cleaning up an EPA superfund site. They had great big tanks full of sand and carbon to filter out a bunch of little nasties that you and your tap water can't even imagine. When the flow was restricted they'd just shoot the water back the other way for a bit and then return to normal operation. The carbon (little black sand) in your filter does not go bad, no matter what the manufacturers tell you. That's how they make their money, by selling you a plastic cup filled with black sand every couple of months. The filter, over a very long period of time, may become clogged. If that happens, take it out, run water over it, turn it upside down, bang it on the counter, I don't care. Whatever you do, buy another filter only as a last resort.

Let me repeat this. These filtration people are selling you a cheap plastic tub with sand in the top and a nozzle on the bottom. The only high tech thing about this is the electronic filter-alarm doohickey that I've never even turned on. Use it until the water just won't go through it any longer. By that time you'll probably just want to buy a brand new one.

I loved the system, but found a huge crack in it wthin a month. Water poured out all over my kitchen. Yes, I must have hit it on something, but it must have been a pretty good crack. I live in a childless household so I have no one to blame it on . I will replace it, but I am pondering the choices and may look for a slightly thicker container. You do need to remove it, fill it and replace it in frig, so it will take a certain amount of moving around and should be more sturdy. Otherwise.................... loved it.

It's hard to move it when you fill it at first or it will leak all over. You have to change the filter every six months, which goes by before you know it. I noticed sometimes there are little black rocks floating around which disturbed me. Otherwise for the price it's a basic pitcher.

I previously reviewed here the Brita 42364 SpaceSaver Pitcher. It had a problem with a lid that would not stay on. We stayed with that pitcher for two months to see if it was tolerable. Nope. We ended up retiring the bad one to the garage to pour random liquids. This one does what we need...and the lid stays on. The one feature the bad pitcher has that this one does not is the filter replacement dial reminder in the lid. This pitcher has a plastic sticker like the oil change reminder they stick on the inside of your car windshield. Kind of makes you wonder what goes on inside the product design world at Brita. Sort of random.

This pitcher fits nicely in the door of my refrigerator which is great! However, the lid falls off every time I use it. Not sometimes, EVERY time. I know it's going to fall off so I make every effort to place my thumb on it while I pour, but no matter how hard I try, it falls off and onto the counter/floor. I don't understand how any industrial designer could feel proud of this pitcher.

I'm giving it two stars because the water tastes great, fits well in the refrigerator and looks nice when set out for use but try to find one with a lid that doesn't crash to the floor whenever you pour yourself a glass..

The first nice thing about this product is how easily I can fill it. Some brands have hoses that must be screwed into the tap. Make sure you don't buy that type. The pitcher is well balanced and a good size for the fridge. It's not too squat, not too wide. The handle is sturdy and has a nice non slip grip. The clear body comes with an optical illusion. It is slightly tinted so the water looks crystal blue and sparkly. This entices you to drink more. Clever idea.

In order to fill the pitcher completely I must fill the reservoir and wait for it to empty out before I can fill it again. This is only a small inconvenience. As yet, I have had no problem with the top falling off. Still, I feel more secure when I lightly hold the top or support the pitcher while I am pouring. I should also mention that the first time I filled the pitcher the water was a little disappointing. I think you may need to run some water through the filter or fill the pitcher up once or twice before it begins to filter properly. After the first fill up the water tasted wonderful.

I would have preferred a built in indicator, but this comes with a "timer" that is no more than a decal. Since I am pretty much the only one using the pitcher I calculated how much the pitcher holds by how many times I can fill it up by how much the filter will accept before needing to be changed.

One of the reviews said not to let the filter dry out. I think this is what I must have done. I waited until the pitcher was empty before refilling it. (Don't like mixing old stale water with new.) I started to notice carbon floating in the reservoir. It doesn't get into the water but it is a little disconcerting. So now I will keep the pitcher filled.

Very happy with this product.

If you have any water in the top reservoir of the pitcher, then when you pour water our, the weight of the water in the top reservoir makes the lid fall off and soak you in water. You have to hold one hand on the lid to prevent it from toppling over when you pour water. So, it is impossible to pour with one hand and hold the glass with one hand.

I also agree with other reviewers that it is very messy and gets a lot of water on your refrigerator shelves.

I gave it 2 starts instead of 1, because the filter makes tap water taste good.

We have a smaller, chrome-topped, Brita pitcher we keep in the fridge, but found we were refilling it frequently. So we bought this, the largest one I think they make except for the dispenser model, to keep on the counter. It's okay, but a little cheaply made, particular the white plastic castings. The filler door on top has a poorly designed hinge that tends to become dislodged, and the flap that covers the spout sticks sometimes as you go to poor, spilling water. Still, the body itself is a stout bit of plastic, and the handle is comfortable to poor whether the pitcher is topped up or nearly empty.

My Pur pitcher recently broke and I decided to try a Brita brand pitcher to replace it. I originally purchased the Brita 35378 Grand Green Pitcher, but was highly disappointed in the lid, design, and overall build quality. I exchanged the pitcher for the Riviera pitcher in chrome. In my short time with this pitcher, it has met the expectations I had. The two piece lid fits securely to the top and does not fall off or lift when holding it. The material seems to be of a higher quality. The pitcher itself is very attractive with the chrome finish. I've been very pleased with this pitcher so far.

I have been using Brita pitchers for almost 15 years, and have used quite a few different ones. Recently I had to replace one (which got dropped and cracked). There were only a couple of models available in our local Kroger store, so I ended up with this model. And I have been cursing Brita ever since. (That's after I wrote to them and got an idiotic non-sequitur response.)

Here are the main problems I have with it:

1. The lid is formed with two parts--the part that opens up and the front part that is supposed to stay on the pitcher while one fills it up. Well, the front part does NOT stay on the pitcher. So every time I refill the pitcher, I have to attempt to snap the front part back in place. But the front part of the lid does not fit well with the filtering compartment, so it takes a couple of minutes (of hating Brita) to get the lid sort of back together.

2. The back portion of the lid--the part that opens to allow faucet water to go in--is difficult to open. I usually use two hands to press it in order to make it work. My children have stopped filling up the pitcher now--they can't get the top to open (although the front portion will willingly fall off at the most unexpected moment.)

3. This model may look sleek, but it is not the easiest to be picked up. Something doesn't feel right with the balance between the handle and the reservoir. I think the upper portion of the pitcher curves out too much--it is aesthetically pleasing, but ends up putting too much weight on the top-front of the pitcher, while the handle is designed in such a way that one can't comfortably hold the pitcher at a point on the handle to maintain a sense of balance. You can see, from the picture, the handle's distance to the main body narrows down considerably as it gets to the top.

The idiotic letter from Brita would not have mattered much, had I been able to find alternative models. After much searching online, it seems that Brita has pretty much abandoned all of its tried-and-true models in favor of the more aerodynamic-looking models (except for the "Classic" round model). So perhaps Brita has gone the direction of HP (the computer/printer company). I guess all good things must end somehow.

I've been a big fan of Brita over the years, but this model (as other reviews have mentioned) has been somewhat disappointing. It makes a mess when you pour. The little flap located at the mouth of the pour spout is likely there to prevent creepy crawlies from getting in, but the fit is so good that the flap doesn't open properly when the water rushes past. Consequently, you get a wide spray of water. If you're not hold your glass over a sink, you're definitely going to get a lot of water on the floor. My fix is that I with my non-pouring hand, I hold the little flap up as I begin to pour (I can let go once the water is pouring). It's kind of a drag, but if you can live with that OK, then you will probably like this product.
Another thing, actually ... and this is probably a small point, is that I've noticed the filters in the past year or so are not very good at keeping those little carbon granules contained within the filter housing. They don't seem to get into the water I drink, but they DO back up into the filling chamber on top. No harm I guess, but it looks unappealing.

I have purchased this Brita water filter about 4 months ago and have experienced all of the negative aspects as the other reviewers. The top fits far too loosely, the flap that covers the water spout sticks, and the filter doesn't fit tight enough so you get little charcoal particles in all of your drinks (isn't that the point of a water filter, taking contaminants out?). The things I do like is the little electronic filter change indicator on the top that makes keeping track of when to change the filter a cinch, the large size, and the taste of the water is decent and filters the water quickly. Overall, it's ok. The pros more or less match the cons, but the cons it does have are annoying. My parents have a cheap PUR water filter and I prefer that one over the Brita just because it is designed better and does it's job better.

I read the reviews for this product in white and now I really wish I would have taken them seriously. To mirror the same thing most people are saying about this pitcher, the lid will not stay on securely. It completely lifts off the top when you place your thumb on the back of it where your thumb is suppose to go. This is just poor design that can't be overcome unless you like the lid popping off and spilling water all the time. On top of this, the overall quality is poor. Compared to other pitches I've used from both Brita and Pur, this one is very flimsy. The positives are the pitcher does hold a lot of water and the green does make it attractive, but I simply can't recommend a pitcher of this poor quality.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I have had no issue with my pitcher's lid. Additionally, I really like to digital reminder on the lid that let's you know how much 'life' you have left on the filter itself.

I am pleased.

I have been a Brita user for years. Recently, after my old pitcher finally cracked, I went ahead and purchased this one, primarily because of its larger capacity. All I can say is WOW....what a disappointment!

The top does not fit properly and comes off when pouring or if you do not put it down super softly. The flip top lid pops off as well.

I called Brita and they sent a replacement top which failed within a week. They sent a whole new replacement unit and THAT one has the same issue.

Conclusion....Brita manufacturing standards have dropped sharply. Who cares how the filters work, if the pitcher itself fails, why bother. Switching to a Pur filter or maybe a Zerowater....anything but Brita.

I was disappointed by this product. It takes such a long time to get this thing up and running! First, you have to wash the thing by hand -- no dishwasher (??) -- then soak the filter for 15 minutes. Then you have to rinse the filter. Then you have to make and discard two while pitchers of water, which takes a looooong time. I had finally gotten down to my second pitcher (*whew*) when I tilted the pitcher just a little bit to the side, and wham! the filter fell out, right down into my garbage disposal. Yuck! And I had put the filter in correctly, too. Of course, I had to throw the filter away, so I was left with a very expensive water pitcher.

I agree with the reviewer who said that the gap on the top is unsanitary -- it is. DO NOT BUY THIS! It is a waste of money.

I could no longer stand the smell and taste of chlorination in the city water, so I bought this Brita pitcher and some replacement filters. The water from the pitcher tastes just like water should taste (not like much!). However, as some other reviews have noted, there are fine dark specks at the bottom of my pitcher. I soaked the filter and followed all of the directions for preparation of my pitcher/filter just as the instructions provided described. After multiple (10+) fillings of the pitcher (not including the first two I "threw out" per the instructions), this fine powder/specks keep appearing. I'm a grad. student (read: I'm cheap), so I haven't thrown out this filter and tried a new one. I am hoping it is just this one filter, but from the reviews, I am thinking that this is going to be a recurring problem. I have not tasted the "carbon" or "charcoal" taste that others have mentioned. But I also don't stir up the water in the pitcher and I don't drink the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the water in the pitcher. This seems to keep the soot in the bottom of the pitcher and out of my glass.

The pitcher is pretty wide, but I don't have one of those fancy side-by-side refrigerators. So, width isn't an issue. Also, the handle seems very flimsy. I think this will probably be the first thing to break. The filtering reservoir could fit into the rest of the pitcher a little tighter, but I haven't had an issue with it falling out or coming loose during pouring. The filter does fit into the reservoir very firmly. It is a little tough to get it out, even.

Bottom line: The pitcher removes even Gainesville's nasty taste/smell from the water, but the construction of the pitcher is questionable (especially for the price of the pitcher!) and I am simply trading one impurity (chlorine taste) for another (soot). Buyer beware.

I am happy with this little pitcher. My previous Brita Deluxe pitcher was 10+years old, and I figured it was time for a replacement. I like the round shape of the Brita Classic. I don't keep my water in the refrigerator; I keep it on my kitchen counter. The Deluxe pitcher is heavier and actually a bit harder for me to handle with one hand than the Classic model. The Classic also has a smaller footprint on my counter. I have very hard water where I live. I don't necessarily use the Brita to drink water, as much as to take out some of the calcium and magnesium salts that destroy so much equipment where I live. I use the Brita water for cooking, pet water, my fish tank, plants, etc. I also use bottled water, but that can get expensive with our tap water, so I like to use the Brita water when I can and save the RO/DI water for better use. I'm talking about the 5-gallon bottled water that you fill at a machine. The Brita helps me keep my costs down, doesn't take up a lot of space, and is light-weight for me to handle. I am very pleased with my purchase. I could not find the Classic round model at the stores.

I love the classic because it is good looking and it works well. It doesn't leak and the top doesn't fall off if it is put on right. Match arrow, arrow to arrow. When you pour and your fingers are on the handle it is very easy to rest your thumb on the arrows on the handle/cover, offers security and a nice method of handling the pitcher.

This is a two-stage pitcher, I use it for coffee and tea and cooking.

I use a Pur three-stage pitcher for drinking water.

For looks and handling, I think the Classic Brita has it all over the Pur but have learned to live with wanting the three-stage process for some things, wish that Brita would consider a three stage filtering system.
