To be honest on my first few listens this CD did not sound good compared to previous Sade work. However, I gave it a chance, after all, I paid for it. Well, now I love it. Give it time. The music is so mellow at times that you forget to listen to the rich interplay going on with the excellent artists. But, the guitar, sax, bass, keyboards, and other instruments are still being played by great musicians, and of course, Sade's vocals are unique and have a beauty of their own.

When I first heard Sade (and saw the band live) I loved the music. That music is here too. Perhaps not to the previous levels, no "Is It A Crime?" here. Yet, satisfying. My favorites on this CD are "The Moon and the Sky", "Long Hard Road", "Bring me Home", and "Skin".

Funny when I listen the the beginning of "Long Hard Road" I expect one of Bob Dylan's songs to follow, but I can't place it. Maybe it is "One More Cup of Cup of Coffee" from the Desire CD?

With their sixth album in twenty five years, Sade has returned with their latest album Soldier of Love and has recaptured the imaginations and ears of listeners worldwide. With their lush sounds and renowned stunning smoky vocals they have set a benchmark for any other artist to live up to.

Their opening track The Moon and the Sky is rippling with emotive vocals and lyrics setting the tone for the entire release. The track is a welcome reminder of what Sade is all about. The ambience and relaxing qualities make the track standout from anything that they have previously done.

The title track Soldier of Love is far more percussive than anything the band has ever released. The sharp hip/hop sounds are a step in a new direction for the band while, at the same time, staying true to what is almost expected.

Babyfather shows the band experimenting with an almost Jamaican sound and is composed of lush sounds and lyrics telling the story of a father/daughter relationship. It's sweet and melodic and leaves the heart of anyone who has troubles with their father aching to pick up the phone and just call him to say hello.

Not content to stay with one genre, further experimentation comes across in Be That Easy which is a borderline country music track. The relaxed vocals and melody create a comfortable atmosphere for the ear. The unobtrusive sounds are calming and blend easily into the background.

Other tracks on the album blend seamlessly into each other. The smooth production and careful consideration, time and effort that has been put into each and every song shows resplendently and showcases the sheer overwhelming talent that the band posses.

The final track is The Safest Place and will remind any listener of what they experienced when they first heard Sade. The same ambient instruments. The relaxed atmosphere. The chilled out vocals. The culmination of what has made Sade such a landmark band since their inception all those years ago.

Soldier of Love is not only an album suited to a dinner party but can be played when ready to kick back and relax after a long day at work. The true majesty of Sade is in abundance throughout the release. The beauty of the vocals and the calm tones of the music. It is a testament to why they have enjoyed such longevity without the ongoing and continual releases of some other artists which pollute today's airwaves.

"Valleys of Neptune" is, perhaps, the last of the Jimi Hendrix vault recordings and as such it is notable. The song "Valleys of Neptune" while not exactly a "lost classic" is definitely a "lost very good" song, it is more in the lyrically experimental vein than a guitar workout but as far as the "Dylanesque" Hendrix it works very well. The new version of "Stone Free" veers more towards the soulful than the original version and is worth the price of the CD itself. This being Hendrix there is plenty of great guitar work- kind of goes without saying- and as I looked over the track list before my first listen I asked myself "Do I really need another version of 'Red House'?"-well, turns out I did as the version here is definitely superior. As long as you view these recordings as a bookend and not essential there is a lot of good stuff here- the recordings are solid and polished and are not just rough recordings that will appeal only to completists. All in all- I now have something I thought I would get ever again- new Hendrix recordings and that is just groovy, man.

I'm not really going to review the album (Even though I love it! ), I just wanted to say if your a Diehard fan of Jimi's or of the genre, then you should pick this up ( or download which ever is your choice ) . I've always been a fan since I was a kid in the 60's when my Mom gave me "Axis Bold As Love" in 1970. In fact I feel a resurgence in Jimi's music with younger people today because of kids like John Mayer and Phillip Sayce.

5stars - "Jimi Will Live Forever!" (Robert M. Lisanti)

"Valleys of Neptune" is the final posthumous release of '60s guitar god Jimi Hendrix. Even in his final album, Hendrix shone brilliantly. He was the psychedelic rock shaman. While Jim Morrison radiated leather-clad eroticism, Hendrix turned his electric guitar into an otherworldly channel of supernatural incantations. "Valleys of Neptune" was intended to be a sequel to the revolutionary Electric Ladyland CD/DVD The music is still incredibly powerful. It's tragic that "Valleys of Neptune" was unreleased in Hendrix's lifetime, and that he died before making more great musical achievements. Always pushing the envelope, his psychedelic blues rock revolutionized and inspired musicians. Today's artists, such as Prince and Carlos Santana, are indebted to him. What made Hendrix unique was that he was powerful in the studio as he was onstage.

In the liner notes, "Valleys of Neptune" tantalizingly hints to fantastic music that might, tragically, still remain unheard. They mention the controversial "Midnight Lightning", its follow-up "Crash Landing" and the "Lifelines" compilation. While the Hendrix family says this is the final album, there are hints of more.

"Valleys of Neptune" opens with the powerful, anthemic "Stone Free." The title track is oceanic and otherworldly. "Hear my train a-comin'" sounds like a potent blend of blues and gospel. "Mr. Bad Luck" is a humorous take on ill-fated love. "Sunshine of your love" has an electrifying guitar solo. "Lover Man" has a driving,chant-like opening riff. What's striking is that a lot of the music is predominantly instrumental--not something you'd hear on Top 40 these days. Hendrix's music is also intricate--perhaps that's why there are Beatles and QUEEN Rock Band--but not Jimi Hendrix Experience. One would have to be experienced. Hendrix was indebted to the blues-especially in songs like "Hear my train a-comin'" and "Ships passing through the night",but he took it to a new level. There are also bonus tracks such as "Slow Version" and "Trash Man."

"Valleys of Neptune" is one of the best releases of 2010. It's tragic that Jimi Hendrix is not here to enjoy it. It's a bittersweet posthumous masterpiece.

The 40's & 50's torch songs, the 60' & 70's ballads, or now in the 21'st century, the "LADY" is a must have for any collection. Dinah Washington, or Billie Holliday. The BG's, or Fleetwood Mac, were what went on the turntable, (WHAT IS A TURNTABLE?") when all the friends left and it was just the two of us home alone. Into the realm of country, Lady Antebellum steps it up a notch to move your heart, and make you want to put your arms around your honey, and tell her, "I need you now."

This is an excellent CD and I can't be more pleased with the entire selection of songs. Johnny has left a legacy and given us another great album that I'm certain to enjoy for years to come. Johnny has given us his witness and has stored his reward in heaven and is nowing reaping what he has sown. The Lord has given Johnny all his talents and Johnny did not bury them, but has deposited them while earning great interest. I trust that Johnny Cash is happy now more than ever for the road he has chosen. He has blessed us, too. The voice is a little cracked and old, but like fine wine it is better with age as he tugs our hearts more than our ears with this excellent selection of songs. Who says you can't take it with you... or maybe send it ahead?

In the music world, no one has influenced a great deal of people like Johnny Cash. His influence spans across generations, songwriters and even music genres. From artists donning all black attire (Run DMC, Depeche Mode), walking the thin line between the sacred and the profane (DMX, Scarface), and refusing to label themselves (Beck), all of that was spawned from the Man In Black. So in 2010, American Recordings released the final installment "American VI: Ain't No Grave".
Like all other albums in this series, it was produced by Rick Rubin and it is considerably short clocking in at a little over 30 minutes. The album starts off with the title track which is also the first single, in which he sings "Ain't no grave that can hold my body down". It's a rather eerie statement- especially if you consider that he passed away in 2003. Following it is the Sheryl Crow song "Redemption Day" and later the Kris Kristofferson penned "For The Good Times" a song that was made famous by Al Green almost 40 years ago. Just about all of the songs are cover songs with the exception of "I Corinthians 15:55" which is the lone Johnny Cash composition. The album ends with the excellent track "Aloha Oe", and as soon as the song ends, you will want to play this album all over again in its entirety. In short, Johnny Cash has the best album out right now. Not just in country...in music, period.

I hope this is the last Johnny Cash album to be released. The six American albums, plus the Unchained Boxed-Set represent arguably the best career ranaissance any artist has ever had. Thank Rick Rubin and the extraordinary band they assembled, including my personal favorite, Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers. But most of all thank Johnny Cash for devoting his final years to his music.

His voice is noticeably frailer even than on American V, as he was truly at the end of his life on these final recordings. It diminishes his power not one bit, however, as he sings with the same passion and honesty he always did. The song selection is impeccable once again, and the musical accompaniment is once again sparse, always putting Cash's voice in the forefront.

It's not an innovative album, and it's not meant to be (though it's interesting and impressive the way the music in the final song subtly works in a bit of "how great thou art"). American VI, the final "aloha" from the greatest country musician ever to live, is a must-hear album, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the music, Johnny. We miss you.

5stars - "The Last of Cash" (Brandon J. Smith)

I have listened to the music of Johnny Cash since I was a young child, for thousands of hours. Needless to say, I was excited about this posthumous release by The Man In Black. It does not disappoint. "Ain't No Grave" is not only my favorite track on the album, but it is one of my favorite songs, ever, by Johnny Cash. The title track is a very powerful and determined track. When listening to the song, you'll be led to think of Lazarus, Jesus, maybe even Nosferatu. Johnny's voice is the center piece of the track, but the footstomps (provided by brother Seth Avett) makes me think of Johnny (and other angels) rising up from the grave: Heavenbound. The organ work in the title track reminds me of some of the work of Nick Cave. Avett Brother Scott Avett provides banjo work that is subtle, purposeful, and pleasantly haunting. I journey this Earth having seen all my parents, grandparents, and aunts pass on from human form and this is a song that gives me hope that they are joining Johnny Cash in a jam session up above.

Another song that transcends death on the album is "I Corrinthians 15:55," which is an intimate song penned by Johnny himself over the last three years of his life. This is a song that emanates contentment and satisfaction for a life well-lived and hope for the afterlife. I especially enjoy, in the c.d. version, the images of excerpts from Johnny Cash's handwritten drafts of the lyrics for this track. Seeing his handwriting helps connect us fans, on a personal level, to Johnny Cash.

I must admit that I am not a fan of Sheryl Crow's music, but Johnny Cash's rendition of her song "Redemption Day" really opens my eyes to her talent as a songwriter. "Redemption Day" includes keen and powerful lyrics that remain in my brain. When singing "Satisfied Mind" Johnny truly sells to the listener that his mind was and is indeed satisfied. One of my favorite songs, ever, is "Cool Water" and there is a cover of this classic cowboy song on this album. Johnny's voice of experience sings of "cool, clear water" and I have to envision him now singing songs in a land with the clearest and coolest of water.

This is a very special album. I recommend American VI: Ain't No Grave to Johnny Cash fans and to all lovers of intimate music.

5stars - "Johnny Cash Transcends the Grave and Celebrates Life" (Michael J. Mayer)

Only ten songs here, but this final Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash American Recording is a gem. I have all of his Rick Rubin projects and I must say not one of them failed to move me, often to tears. Cash was most definitely a man of faith. This CD is full of sincerity, honestly and the promise of life everlasting. Of all Cash's American Recordings, this one is the one that gave me hope that it's not over when we leave this world. There is something better "over yonder." Nobody says that better than Johnny. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants a meditative glance at their own mortality, or just may want to hear something fresh.

5stars - "Great Crazy Music" (Texas vol fan)

Wasn't sure what I was getting into, saw the movie and thought it was well done. I was a bit shocked at how good Jeff Bridges sounds considering you think of him as an actor first. When you go to Nashville and visit places like Tootsie's, The Ryman, The Wildhorse, well this is what this music reminded me of, it feels "real" not perfect but authentic. I really liked Fallin' and Flyin' and there is a Waylon Jennings classic, overall I enjoyed the music and the movie. I was happy to see Jeff Bridges earn an Oscar.

I saw Crazy Heart last night and knew from the moment I heard Jeff Bridge's opening song that this was a soundtrack I had to have. Now, country is not typically my musical genre - I range from Fleetwood Mac to Sonic Youth, Bjork to the Rolling Stones, A Tribe Called Quest to Taj Mahal.

Nonetheless, every song throughout this remarkable film touched me deeply. As early as I could this morning, I bought the soundtrack and I have no regrets. For eight dollars, I have twenty-three deeply moving songs and I couldn't be happier. Skip the expensive lunch today; buy this album.

Susan's spin on old but goodies is haunting,almost ethereal. Her bell-clear, natural intonations are pleasant to one's ears. I think she should continue to amaze us with these interpretations of the truly melodic songs of both opera and pop from the past.

Along with everyone else who purchases Susan's CD, I fell in love with her voice from the youtube videos. However, the songs on this CD do not seem to fit her voice. There are several jazz songs and most of the songs in general do not demand the power she is so capable of delivering. I hope she will do another CD with songs that match her talent.

What I would give to sing like the incredible kd lang. I remember seeing her perform on the Canadian Juno awards many years ago- in a wedding dress with cowboy boots. She owned the stage and was mesmerizing. One can't help but close their eyes and just let her smooth, mournful voice wash over you. A beautiful collection.

What I would give to sing like the incredible kd lang. I remember seeing her perform on the Canadian Juno awards many years ago- in a wedding dress with cowboy boots. She owned the stage and was mesmerizing. One can't help but close their eyes and just let her smooth, mournful voice wash over you. A beautiful collection.

Having read the other reviewers comments, I admit that I am no K.D. Lang expert. In fact I had never owned one of her tapes nor had an interest in owning one until I saw her perform at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics (on television of course). To me her singing of "Hallelujah" was THE highlight of the ceremony. It was SUPERB! I couldn't wait to access Amazon.com and order a CD of hers with "Hallelujah" as one of the songs. To my most pleasant surprise, this two-tape set far exceeded my expectations. Granted I am one of those over 50's who may liken Lang to singers like Linda Rondstadt--only a sexier and sultrier version but I simply LOVE her! I am SO GLAD I bought this two tape set which is a collection of outstanding songs I will be enjoying for a long time to come. I may not be as knowledgeable of Lang and her music as the other reviewers but I know what I like and THIS is it! Good job K.D.!

k.d. lang has a beautiful voice. What the producers of Recollection seemingly forgot is that she is also a superb songwriter. Filling 50% of an already abbreviated collection with covers and padding the rest with obscure soundtrack contributions and duets skews the perception of just how k.d. lang spent her commercial peak in the 1990s and early 2000s on Sire/Warner Bros. Records.

The release of Reintarnation in 2006, representing her earlier, "punk cowgirl" era, allowed for this second retrospective to focus on the expanse of her singles output beginning with 1992's "Constant Craving", when k.d. became a visible and outspoken pop culture icon possessing an exceptional singing voice and accomplished songwriting skills.

Perhaps now all involved would rather forget that the better part of a decade was then spent courting pop radio and the higher reaches of the charts with deserving but ultimately under performing singles. Regardless, the fact remains that the excellent albums Ingenue, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, All You Can Eat, Drag and Invincible Summer were heavily promoted to the pop public with many of the best songs from these releases serviced as singles to radio stations, video networks and clubs.

Yes, "Constant Craving," "Miss Chatelaine," "Summerfling" and "You're OK" are included on Recollection. "Sexuality" also appears, though inexplicably only on the rarities disc of the Deluxe Version. But where are the rest of her original pop singles?

"If I Were You," "The Consequences Of Falling," "Anywhere But Here," "Lifted By Love," "The Mind Of Love (Where Is Your Head Kathryn?),""Just Keep Me Moving," "Simple" and others are shut out in favor of 2 versions of "Hallelujah", a live duet with Tony Bennett and six other soundtrack or 'various artists' contributions... most of which certainly belonged instead on the rarities disc.

With the surplus of cover recordings included on Recollection, what exactly are we to recall? k.d., the "song stylist"? That is only a small --and perhaps the least interesting-- facet of this particular artist.

A more ideal collection would have consisted of one lengthier disc (16+ songs) of original singles, plus the great new recording "Beautifully Combined"; a second disc including covers and other album highlights; a third disc of TRUE rarities collecting the aforementioned soundtrack and VA cuts; and finally a COMPLETE, chronological DVD video collection.

As it stands, the k.d. lang I and many others have enjoyed for 20 years is barely visible on Recollection.

Peter Gabriel's newest disc, Scratch Your Back, is Peter's interpretations of other people's music. While I am only familiar with about one half of the songs he has done for this album, I'll give you my opinion on all of them from my first couple of listenings.

Overall I find the CD listless, and to me Peter seems to be off his game. Maybe I'm just used to the rock instrumentation...no, I loved The Book of Love from Shall We Dance. It does not seem...organically Gabriel. It's almost like Peter is doing a parody of himself. Of the songs I know, Waterloo Sunset, Book of Love, Boy in the Bubble, Heroes, Philadelphia, and Street Spirit, I really like Book of Love and Waterloo Sunset. I find the rest to be unworthy arrangements and a little off-putting, as Peter strains at some of the vocals. Especially disappointing to me were Boy in the Bubble and Street Spirit.

As far as the other offerings go, My Body is a Cage is interesting...but that's it.

Overall, I find Peter does better with his own material. I find this too safe and, well, dull. I'll give this effort 2 1/2 stars. Recommended for completists only.

I was hoping that after 8 years he would come out with an album of his own songs, but anyway... I honestly had some trepidations about an album of "covers". Of all people Gabriel certainly has enough creativity in him to beg the question if this is necessary. Nevertheless, despite a mixed track record with his previous releases, any new release by Peter Gabriel is worthy of investigation, and I was actually not disappointed. Gabriel takes a very eclectic mix of songs from very different songwriters and very much makes them his own. His performances are all great, and he seems to discover things in the songs which weren't apparent. The instrumentation - an orchestra with occasional piano, and perhaps some electronics - no drums or guitars - certainly gives the song a different spin. Among Peter Gabriel's talents is his ability to create interesting soundscapes. He is in fact a pioneer in that regard.

Nevertheless, this album has a number of flaws to it. First of all, the material is, IMO, not equally strong. There is, as other reviewers have commented, a certain "sameness", not only in the orchestration, but particularly in the tempo. The result is a couple of somewhat dull patches.

In summary, I can't give it more than an "OK" mark, mainly because I know what he can do. Certainly everything Peter Gabriel has done has at least something interesting to it, and a lot of it is great, but I cannot rank this near the top among Gabriel albums. But still, as with all his stuff, worth multiple listens.

I do very much look forward to his concert, when he sings backed with an orchestra. Peter Gabriel has always been a dynamic stage performer (with or without fox head or flower petal masks).

4stars - "not perfect but worth checking out" (Andreas C G)

Peter Gabriel selected a group of songs by some of pop music's finest writers (among them veterans like Neil Young, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, and Randy Newman, as well as younger writers like Arcade Fire, Regina Spektor, and Bon Iver). The songs work well together, and focus on subjects like terrorism, love, and death. Most are beautifully arranged for chamber ensemble by the talented John Metcalfe. A really stunning cover of Elbow's love song "Mirrorball" achieves something very rare -- serious, moving art about joy. Lovely stuff.

5stars - "Music for grown-ups" (G. Varner)

I am a long time fan of Peter Gabriel's work, but I have to say this is a dissapointment. The hole album is very plain, with the notable of Listening Wind, but even then I keep imagening where Tony Levin or Manu Katche could come in and make the a good song a great song. However, in all of his albums I end up liking the songs I dismiss at the beginning and dismissing the ones I like....but somehow it doesn't feel that way this time.

2stars - "Huge dissapointment" (Gerardo Riquelme)

An album of covers--especially from a top-notch songwriter like Peter Gabriel--might seem like a cop out (why not write new material?), but I think this album works very well on two levels.

First, a successful cover should make you hear a song in a completely new and unexpected way. Gabriel's moody renditions of these songs give each of them plenty of room to breathe, so that lyrics that might have rushed by unnoticed in the original here linger and resonate in new ways. The best example of this is probably Paul Simon's "The Boy in the Bubble," a song I've heard many, many times on the radio and yet, somehow, never really listened to prior to hearing this CD. The combination of Gabriel's vocals and John Metcalfe's atmospheric arrangements transforms Simon's upbeat pop song into a haunting meditation more fitting to the rather dark lyrics.

Second, the arrangements showcase Gabriel's distinctive voice. Without drums and guitars, a lot of space is given to the vocal in these songs, and the vocals themselves are recorded in a very intimate way. There are times when his emotions are right on the surface, as on "Heroes," where it sounds as though he is on the verge of tears about halfway into the song. This might sound hokey in someone else's hands, but Gabriel's voice still has the gravitas to make us share what he feels in delivering the song.

Four stars for song selection, because not every number is a winner. I thought the Radiohead cover, for example, was somewhat lackluster--and probably added just so Gabriel could get Thom Yorke on board to cover one of his own songs. But on the whole I would recommend this CD for Gabriel fans. You won't be disappointed.

The only other cover album I can think of that approaches this one in atmosphere is Marianne Faithfull's "Strange Weather," which, if you like this, you might want to also check out. Strange Weather

5stars - "Excellent Debut" (Marie A. Mee)

Danny's debut CD is all the I thought it was going to be. The reason he fits the bill as a country artist is because in today's country industry it's not all twang and cowboy hats ie. (Rascal Flats, Keith Urban) It is about raw singing talent. Danny has had talent since the first day I heard him and met him. The other thing that makes Danny a great performer is that he is a completely down to earth person, who relates to what he is singing about and that makes his perfromances come from the heart. I worked with at risk kids at a youth center in Milwaukee and Danny was one of my co workers, and I know where his energy in this CD came from. He cares people. It is a great CD and I recommend it to anyone who wants to hear someone singing from the heart.

People enjoyed Danny Gokey on American Idol for his pop and R&B style. This record was complete sell out goin' country garbage complete with banjos and lap steels all over it. Yes country is selling in big numbers but does that mean that artists should totally abandon their artistic vision and go county? NO!! It's lame when Bon Jovi did it, lame when Def Leppard tried it and it's lame here too. Lame corporate sell out crap.

After having seen these guys on Oprah, was looking forward to hearing them sing. Unfortunately for them they are not IL DIVO. I have been following them since their beginning and in my mind they are the best. It would help if these guys had better songs to showcase their talent. To me the best song on the CD was Halleleujah, otherwise was not too impressed. I wish them well, but IL DIVO they are not.

I love the Canadian Tenors for their distinct voices. Each singer has his own unique voice that compliments the other singers to makes a perfect harmony. The variations of four amazing vocals creat magic in the melody. Every song on this CD gives me goosebumps and brings me Tears of Joy and peace at heart. I particularly love Adagio, Hallelujah, I only Know how to Love and Remember Me. By far the best CD I own to date. There are many versions of Hallelujah but this is the best version. I heard Il Divo and K.D Lang's version but i much prefer the Canadian Tenors version. It brought tears to my eyes hearing them sing with such emotion and conviction truly majestic. You will never be disappointed with this CD. Their Christmas CD is also amazing. Bravos to the Canandian Tenors!
