Anyone giving this less than 4 stars must be kidding. This is beautiful. I'm not a "classical" fan, but this isn't a "classical" album. Something about the instruments being played with a bow and not picked/plucked/hit didn't sit right with me at first, it's like listening to an all winds section. But, I got over that and just let it wash over me. "First Impressions" is my favorite, it almost makes me well up.

I love this CD. I bought it back when it was first released and have been through 2 discs. Living in Florida and missing my Mid-western Illinois Autumns, this music allows me the joy of Fall. Not sure it was meant to do that but somehow it does.

This lovely meditation on Appalachian themes by three fine string musicians has special guests James Taylor and Alison Krauss. I love this recording. This is the best of the fusion work from our great age. Elements of country and bluegrass. This is a treat. Good sonics.

I totally respect YoYo Ma but this CD was a little disappointing because all the tunes were more like jaz and improv than nice tight blue grass and Appalachian fiddle tunes. One reel was nice but they all had a slow dirge quality that disappointed me.

The CD is wonderful, am enjoying it greatly.
However, the padded bag in which it came had been slashed - with a sharp blade - deeply, right into the casing of the disc. I was very, VERY upset, but didn't have time to mess around explaining it to Amazon, or whoever.....as was leaving on biz trip the next day.
I play the disc, but am annoyed at the damage to its cover. I very much doubt that the damage happened here, in the UK.....I believe that it happened in transit from the USA - they are paranoid about stuff in the post. Or, it was some criminally minded US postal employee seeing if the disc was worth stealing - being classical, he/she didn't want it !!!
I wonder if anyone from Amazon will read this?
And, if they do, if they even care?
Probably not.........
Anyway, Yo-Yo Ma & the Tango music is excellent......

I originally purchased this CD because I like Yo-Yo Ma's music, and wanted to expand my collection. Not knowing much about tango, neither being a fan of it, I still decided to purchase the CD, merely because of Ma's Cello work.

The minute I inserted the disc in my computer's CD-ROM, I was HOOKED! It's unbelievably good, even for those who have no exposure to or knowledge of tango music.

After a few listens, one becomes familiar with the rhythm of the songs and wishes to stand up and dance. Ma's expressive playing style, along with the tango music and variety of instruments and style, capture the listener, and can do either of these: help you concentrate, relax, work and study OR it will make you want to get up and start dancing tango, even if you never have before. There are songs for love, romance, relaxing and spending time with some friends while having a bottle of wine or to set the atmosphere for a calm setting during dinner and/or after.

Here is my opinion in a nutshell: If you listen to Yo-Yo Ma, do yourself a favor and BUY this CD! You will NOT be disappointed.

I am 28 years old, and have never before listen to tango. I thought that was for grandma and grandpa; as I don't know anyone young enough who listens to tango. This music, this CD has changed the way I think about tango, and has broadened my musical horizons.

I never get tired of listening to this CD. It is beautiful, healing, and relaxing. My husband usually does not listen to any classical music but this one. Both he and I love this! Just let you know that the newer version of this title is "un-rippable" so if you want to listen to them on your MP3 player, I recommend that you purchase MP3 version instead.

I bought this because I love to listen to cellos. On my Mark&Daniels,the sound is first rate, overall. ButI would have loved to have the cello given a bit more prominence, audio-wise. The accompanying instruments are aggressive enough to drown the cello out in the musical pictures, except for the first selection which is just fabulous.

The Baroque Period in Europe originated in the early 17th century and reached it's peak in the early 18th century. The English word "baroque" is translated from the Italian "barocco", meaning "bizarre". "Passionate" is probably more like it. Johann Sebastian Bach is the most celebrated of the Baroque composers, although George Frederick Handel and Antonio Vivaldi are also famous for their Baroque music.

Yo Yo Ma's Simply Baroque (1999) brings the Grammy Award winning master cellist together with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopman) to perform mostly Bach pieces from the 18th century late Baroque period. You might recognize some of this music even if you don't know your classical music. It is thoughtful and soothing, even sounding sacred at times. Yo Yo's rich and soulful cello brings a sad beauty to these beautiful melodies, and his skillful perfection is satisfying and impressive. Enveloped by the A.B.O., Ma brings these great compositions to life, and once again a new generation hears the music of Bach and Boccherini.

You don't have to know anything about classical music to enjoy Simply Baroque; it's quite enjoyable just as it is. It's relaxing, reflective and interesting. It's simply... wonderful!

Some recordings sound polished and elegant. Some sound like the artists are having a blast while they're recording. "Hush" is a delightful mix of both.

Most of the songs are pretty quiet save for my three favorites. You've got a lot of traditional and classical music with Master Ma's beautiful playing and McFerrin's incredibly versatile voice.

My favorites:

"Hush" with lyrics by McFerrin
"Hoedown" with vocal riffing by McFerrin
"Flight of the Bumblebee" probably the most fun the pair had

What I love most about this album as opposed to his newest album this year the Piano Trios is how the cello seems forfront and is the star of this album. I just got acouple of his albums and while they are awesome to listen to, what I love the most about this album is the cello. The cello blends in discreetly but mostly is stands out on its own. I am a Yo Yo Ma fan to the end!!! Great music for any contemporary classical fan!! Bravo!!

Yo Yo Ma is one of the most phenomenal musicians of modern day. Whether it's Vivaldi, Hayden, Bach or James Taylor that comes from his cello, you can be assured that he makes it his own and it is handled with the best of care. I bought this (and other Yo Yo Ma) for my wife for Christmas and I think I have listened to it as much or more than her.
I believe that if the younger generation of what is lightly referred to as "musicians" were to listen to him and how he plays, not with his hands but with his heart, they would simply have to step out of the world referred to as musical talent due to embarrassment.
His style on this compilation shows his uniqueness and passion for the music as well as ultimate respect for the composer(s). I would believe that he will go down in the annals of history as one of the most gifted and appreciated musicians of all time.

Vivaldi's music is a joyful celebration of life. Although his works for the 'cello are well known, the violin usually takes priority. Yo Yo Ma's interpretation of Vivaldi through the 'cello, both music Vivaldi wrote for the violoncello and violin music adapted for it, is a musical miracle. Composers of the Baroque Era often rearanged music for various instruments; so no artistic damage is done. And the lugubrious tones of Ma's 'cello call to mind the wonderful pleasure of an excellent cheese complimented with fine wine. A total treat.

Do not buy this record. I did, without reading any reviews, thinking that with the lovely, lyric Dvorak cello concerto and the superb cellist Yo-Yo Ma, I could hardly go wrong. Yes, the Dvorak is an outstanding composition, and Yo-Yo Ma plays very well, but the audio engineering on this recording is a disaster.

Reviewer C. Kang senses that something is not quite right when he says "The recording sounds a bit quiet", and reviewer Robert Preziose hits the nail on the head when he says that the cello line simply gets lost because the audio engineers did not properly emphasize what should be a singing, lyric line, at least balanced with the orchestra in some places, and soaring above it in others, or clearly audible when on its own, even in the quietest passages. Having to strain to hear the cello line in this recording, from first to last, robs the listener of any pleasure in the music. Yo-Yo Ma sounds as if he were playing in a closet. The audio engineers botched this one very badly, ruining a good performance, which is a pity and a crying shame.

I was so grievously disappointed when I listened to this record that I went and bought two other recordings of the Dvorak cell concerto, both of which were immensely satisfying (wonderful lyrical music, great playing by cello soloist and orchestra, and excellent sound and balance) and can be highly recommended.

(1) Mstislav Rostropovich, cellist, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Carlo Maria Giulini [EMI Classics]. The Dvorak is paired with the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No. 1, which is not in the same league as Dvorak's masterpiece, but is a nice, interesting piece of music. Rostropovich is outstanding.

(2) Pierre Fournier, cellist, with the Berlin Philharmonic under George Szell [Deutsche Grammophon Musikfest]. Fournier is also outstanding. The Dvorak is coupled with Bloch's Shelomo, which is not to my taste (lots of rhapsody but not much melody) and Bruch's Kol Nidrei, a single adagio movement, which I liked very much.

Either one of these recordings of the Dvorak cello concerto is a much better bet than this one by Yo-Yo Ma. Reviewer Robert Preziose recommends the recording by Jacqueline Du Pre, which I do not have and cannot comment upon, but which you should certainly investigate and consider.

4stars - "YoYo Ma Dvorak Album" (C. KANG)

Yo Yo Ma has the perfect tender and romantic feel for Dvorac. Unfortunately he is not a powerful performer. He is relatively subdued and that is okay with this music. The fault on the very first selection, the concerto, is the recording. It is though he is in the middle of the orchestra playing with everyone else. There is very little presence given to him by the engineer in the mix down. This is very unfortunate. The listener must pick out the lead performer.
I used to 'bury' musicians when they weren't up to par for the good of the whole recording. Everyone including the musican were grateful for this. However, Yo Yo was not having a bad day, and you never bury the lead. Shame on you guys in the booth.
The rest of the album is just fine.
I suggest purchasing Jacqueline du Pre 'A Lasting Inspiration' for fine cello and very fine recording and if you compare the two you will understand exactly what I mean to convey.

The ensemble's musicians - which include Yo Yo Ma - bring a variety of styles to Eastern "Silk Road" musical themes. Great with the lights out and a glass of single malt at hand.

Unfortunately, this CD just did'nt have the same verve and energy as that telivised performance. That being said, it is still great listening, especially for relaxing. I don't regret my purchase and will seek out more by the SR ensemble.
