I love music - opera, jazz, rock, you name it. Happened to hear "Endlessly" online and the decision was made. I love Renee's voice on this album, and the songs, mostly new to me, are fabulous.
Whatever Renee Fleming sings, she's fantastic. Her album "Haunted Heart" is just as great. I feel blessed to be able to listen to this great singer.

I've heard some bad cover songs before - 'In Your Eyes' takes the cake. This is awful - makes my ears bleed!

I listen to satellite radio at work. I kept hearing this song called "In Your Eyes" played a couple times a day for a few days in a row. I heard it again and looked at the computer to see who was singing it. I had never heard of Renee Fleming before now. So I did what every other American would do when faced with something they know nothing about - I did a web search for her and found YouTube clips and songs by her and was hooked instantly. Her voice is so powerful. I got on Amazon and downloaded the MP3 of "In Your Eyes" and wow. Absolutely fantastic. I'm not normally a fan of cover songs. Most of the time, the covers are crappy recordings of songs that should have been left alone. This disc is the exception to the rule. I bought the disc after listening to the clips on Amazon's site.

The disc arrived in the mail yesterday and I put it in my CD player. All I can say is wow. Amazing. Incredible. The CD is something I never expected it to be. All of the songs on the disc are fantastic and Renee does well singing them all.

I can see myself creating a hole in this disc from playing it over and over so many times.

This isn't your usual crossover by a classical artist where an opera singer just has "too much voice" for the pop music she's doing and sounds a little silly. These are great and meaningful songs, sung in a completely different style than her usual operatic offerings. Great CD for what it is, and a whole other side of Renee Fleming. Even more of a step out than "Haunted Heart", another nonoperatic offering. The songs have a complexity and intelligence about them, that make it one of those CD's that get better with additional plays. In the liner notes she says this is the sort of music her daughters turned her on to. She's got to be a very cool Mom.
Bravo Renee, I hope the Met isn't too annoyed. I loved you for your Strauss and Mozart, I like you even better now.

Chris Botti s by far and wide the best smooth Jazz trumpeter in the world today. This fabulous live concert CD/DVD is a great record of a magnificent concert he did in Boston with some friends as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Anyone who knows anything about Jazz music and has any real taste will tell you that Chris Botti is a superior musician. As Sting said in his interview which are in the bonus features of the DVD - Who would have thought that his trumpet player from Sting's band - would go out and have his own solo career - and then invite him back as a guest on his own concert tour?!? And the incredible respect that Sting and Chris have for one another is no more evident than in the two songs Sting performs in this concert. I mean, you know you've really made it when you can get Sting to come out and do one song and then leave on your own show!!!
Yo-Yo Ma also features in this concert - Yo Yo Ma is royalty in the classical music world - and is undoubtedly the greatest cellist alive in the world today. The level of respect and love that all other musicians as well as all music lovers have for Yo Yo Ma is felt when he walks on stage. There is a sense of reverence almost for his musical brilliance - and this version of 'Cinema Paradiso' with Chris Botti is utterly sublime in every way.
Josh Groban does a lovely job of one of his hit's from the 'Closer' album - the Lara Fabian song 'Broken Vow'. (May i take this opportunity to say that Josh Groban does a million times better version of this song than Lara Fabian EVER did - he actually feels the dramatic simplicity of the lyric and the emotion without making it soap opera stuff).

And what a pleasant surprise - Katherine McPhee! What a great Jazz voice this young lady has!! She does a delightful rendition of I've Got You Under My Skin (Sinatra's original orchestration!). Who would have thought a young American Idol winner would actually get to rub shoulders with some of the best musicians in the industry?!

There are some heart-felt tributes in the concert as well. The first to Miles Davis' infamous 'Kind Of Blue' where Chris evokes the Miles Davis sound like only he could - with incredible tone and a sense of mystery.
The second tribute is to Jeff Buckley - and his famous version of Leonard Cohen's 'Halleluja'. His words about Jeff Buckley and his Grace album are a lovely moment.

Aerosmith's Steve Tyler makes a spontaneous 'surprise' appearance for two songs! One of them he dedicates to his father who's in the front row (Chaplin's 'Smile'). He's got a wierd mouth that Steve Tyler - he's quirky, but i could learn to like him.

John Mayer surprises us all with a Rogers and Hart song!!! Who would have thought?!?!? And hearing that the song 'Glad To Be Unhappy' was the reason he did the gig in the first place - made me respect the man a little more than I did. Another great musician alongside Chris.

Lucia Micarelli is lovely accompanying Chris in this version of Emmanuel. There is more on the DVD than on the CD. Only one or so songs are cut for the CD, but don't let that put you off. It's still got all the best ones there. Buying this combo pack is well worth the money! The band of 'cats' he plays with are the coolest jazz cats you ever did hear play smooth jazz.

Not only does Norman cover both the opera and jazz sides of music with her voice but she has the musical accompaniment behind her to match. There are places in this concert recording (it is not a studio recording) where the jazz musicians get to stretch out too! Not to take away from Norman's brilliant performance but jazz fans will love this bonus. I won't go into the details for perfornce as it's already been don - and well, I might add - by reviewer Paolo. I'll just point out that the musical styles are paced nicely. And her spoken introductions show how immersed she is in the music, whether opera, spirituals or jazz. Norman covers all bases!

In her new two disc album, Jessye Norman has given us an a gift that is as sure to infuriate as many as it delights. This is as it should be. The live album (recorded before an audience at the Berlin Symphonie) is a musical journey - almost a theatre piece - of Norman's life as a proud, black African American woman of song.

It opens with a rhythmic overture of African drums serving as a sort of "call to order" which doesn't so much end as it does flow into her first number, an a capella rendition of "His eye is on the sparrow" - slowly an instrument, a drone, is heard as we move into the spiritual "I want two wings" - as the instruments progress with the singer directly, marvelously, into "I couldn't hear nobody pray" with the singer and her musicians increasing in intensity through this steady stream. The effect is as if walking down the darkest of halls or paths, lost, blindly, eyes adjusting slowly to the darkness and moving toward a single shaft of light, distant, faint, that, with each step increases both in warmth and brilliance. It is a tremendous effect.

Norman uses her instrument as the best jazz or classical musicians do, with a sound that is usually immediately identifiable, but willing to do everything and anything within its means to achieve an artistic purpose, bending melodies, pitch, lightening the voice to a thin, almost childlike sound, or opening up and bathing the room in a lush warmth you never want to end. Some, particularly strictly classical audiences, will find this disturbing (indeed early reviews have called the album "painful" and "disgusting" and "shameless." Everyone of those "critics" may be right in not liking what she's done here, but are wrong . . . DEAD wrong in their failure to understand what she has done here and what she is giving us.

The first song to take us "there" is Duke Ellington's "Heaven" where Norman, begins it as a jazz standard, playing with the piano, swooping up and down and coloring the notes and text with liberties. About midway through, through scatting, nonsense syllables, trilled "rs" and drum-like sound effects becomes a player in the band. The effect is terrific fun with Norman covering several octaves easily, breezily. Only in the bizarre world of music can this be followed - almost seamlessly, by a reprise of Bernstein's "Somewhere" from West Side Story. It is about as inauthentic a version to Broadway as is possible, but Norman wears it earnestly and this little version does exactly what she expected it would - have the audience hoopin' and hollerin' - as she rolls/plows/busts into "My Baby Just Cares for Me." It's almost too much to take in and I looked in vain for a place to take a breath and realized . . . I didn't even want to.

Norman is unrecognizable in a number of the pieces (including the aforementioned "My baby...") but every syllable is uttered with care, precision just as every note is a wild, swinging celebration of a life's joy as she calls out as her player's names before a solo riff in great jazz lady style.

While Lena Horne's "Stormy Weather" has always been my touchstone for that song, Norman takes a new approach, a more jazz-infused one, at some point almost recalling just a hint of Billy Holiday's voice. It's a slower, more sensuous take than anyone is probably used to, but I can see this version becoming "standard" . . . and Norman, with her operatic inclinations infuses the song with a weight that feels natural and bulds and builds towards the final reprise. It's thrilling.

What Norman does with "Mack the Knife" is sheer brilliance, almost returning the piece to the opera house, giving the opening narrative auf Deutsch, against the small tattoo of a snare drum as she turns the bloody, violent text into a narrative of devilish delight. Each verse grows in intensity, voice and a bit of violence until the audience erupts in extended cheers as the song is wrapping up. Oh, Jessye!

It's almost impossible to review this without wanting to comment on every single number (as I've done up until now). Suffice it to say, what Norman does with nearly every song is claim it as her own, turn whatever you may have known or felt about the song on its ear. Even something as innocuous as "All the pretty horses" becomes something else altogether - a haunting dreamscape with enough colors to convince the listener he has synesthesia. There's the brutality of "God's Gonna Cut You Down" with a dark rawness that gives Johnny Cash a run for his money. When she ends the song it is with a final pronouncement announcing death and it's chilling. But Norman isn't done as she admonishes her band "Take me off" and walks off singing the "Go tell . . . go tell that back biter, Good God a'mighty's gonna cut you down!" and again, the house goes absolutely wild.

Norman opens the second half with "Les Chemins de L'amour" - in a throaty baritone, that under different circumstances might be deemed a bit indulgent, but here - works. There are brilliant touches that abound, such as the "La Marseillaise" morphing into "The Star Spangled Banner" which serves as the introduction to "J'ai Deux Amours"

Jessye finishes her musical journey with Ellington, Bizet, Monk and more ending on a "When the Saints Go Marching In" introduced by a bluesy, twangy that gets the audience and Jessye into a fiesty mood that finishes the concert in as bawdy, loud and rip roarin' a manner that probably hasn't been heard since Judy sang at Carnegie!

It is nearly beyond comprehension (but only "nearly) that this is the same woman who for years has transfixed me as Cassandre, terrified me as Judith, thrilled me as Ariadne only makes this cake all the tastier.

This is as joyous a celebration of a singer as I have ever experienced and I only hope the album sells well and shows those who might not already know, what a force of nature, what an artist and remarkable human being is this Jessye Norman. Now take the show on the road, girl!

The duet with Chris Botti is too soft. And while I love the Evanesence cover, the older folks in the house are not amused!

Como siempre, la gran diva de Whales deleitandonos con su maravillosa, preciosa y elegantisima voz...grandes canciones clasicas, canciones inmortales de esas que nunca pasaran de moda, cantadas con una emocion que hasta nos saca las lagrimas; basta con escuchar piezas tan lindas como ANCORA NON SAI (mi favorita por excelencia y la mas preciosa del disco, es simplemente "magica"), LA VIE EN ROSE (con ese toque "añejo" que nos da el "Scratch" del inicio, buena tecnica!), SI SE PERDE UN AMORE (nostalgica), LOVE NEVER DIES (muy buena competidora de la de Queen), I BELIEVE (que grandioso duo hace con Bocelli, digna de dar el titulo al disco), FEAR OF FALLING (tierna, armoniosa, magnifica), el gran clasico PARLA PIU PIANO (de la pelicula "El Padrino", magistralmente interpretada)...todo esto nos da una coleccion deliciosa de grandes melodias que se juntan para hacer un disco SOBERBIO Y FUERA DE ESTE MUNDO!!

When you like Il Divo, it is difficult to review each album because you approach them positively and are always rewarded for such an attitude. But in this case, if you are hesitating at all, "She" makes the entire album worth buying. It's a beautiful album and "She" is the icing on the cake.

This CD is the most fantastic one I have in my collection. The voices are great and I play it every day in my car as I travel. I purchased it for the song "Amazing Grace," but the other songs are just as good. The only thing missing is that I cannot identify the individual voices. I think I can place each one, but I am not sure. I would love to know each one's voice. Great CD. I had heard the Amazing Grace on the radio before I purchased it and spend some time before I located the CD. Wish it were longer. Amazing voices. The voices are the best I have ever heard. I am a singer and music lover and this CD is the best.
