The first cut on this CD is absolutely jarring, and most of the others left a lot to be desired. I normally really enjoy Sting and I work for a professional symphony and attend regularly so I enjoy that as well. This particular combination just didn't work at all for me. Too bad as I was really looking forward to it.

I'm eating up this record. Play it over and over. In that rare class of current song sets that I need to hear fully front to back every couple of days. Sometimes on shuffle. Now that you mention it in fact I believe it's time to play it again.

My only smallish gripe, apropos of the title, is I'd've liked to hear a full orchestral attack on 'Synchronicity I' somehow. Has to be some kind of transporting way to arrange it. Maybe someday.

In general this sort of elaboration of previous inspiration seems entirely valid & healthy and I was hoping to see more of it attempted. All the grousing around here can only have made that slightly less likely if anything so let me ask again: What's the deal with you crabapples?

Anyone with a passing interest in Jarrett's recorded work knows what I'm talking about. I fully embrace every enthusiastic five-star rating of the music recorded here. It's beautiful. I hoped, though, I could be spared the frustration of having Jarrett's Sniveling Whine once again corrupt an otherwise amazing listening experience. No such luck. I know, I know -- I should pay attention to the music, etc. I've been listening to Keith Jarrett for 25 years, even with the SW. This time I've just had enough. How does Jarrett expect anyone to overlook that intrusion time and time again? He's walked off stage because audience members were coughing too much. I'd bet if someone else started the SW during a concert he'd walk off for that too. At least I didn't try to follow the advice to "Call your wife or husband or lover in late at night and sit down and listen." As soon as the SW foolishness began, more than the recording would have been ruined on that night......

If you like KJ or Charlie, you must have it. Nuff said. Throw some nice cans on the head, and a nice glass of port or cognac, and just enjoy it. It's easy to listen to it in background, but if you REALLY listen, you'll be amazed at how much these two know each other and play as one. As one of Keith's [untrained musically] students told him in his car after listening to it, she said 'it's like you guys could just pick up each other's instruments and play them like you do with your own'.
You'll keep coming back for this one.

On first listen, I thought she went mad, I didn't like anything on the CD at all, thought she's reading words with music. But I found myself listening to this CD more than 20 times last week, non-stop! Her voice is still in my head... Still, I can't say I love the album, I can tell you I still not sure about her version of 'In your eyes'... but somehow, I keep playing the CD over and over again. I really want to listen to it! It is not perfect, but she is very different than any body else... May be I'll keep listening to it for a few weeks and see how I feel... She does have some magic in it...I can't tell you exactly why I keep listening to it either...

I love this CD...enough to use it as my motivational CD every morning as I'm treading upon the treadmill. And that's a huge compliment in my book. First of all, I'm a classically trained singer, I'm a soprano, and I'm picky. There's enough variety in the tempos for a good workout and enough depth and mystery in the music and lyrics to keep me interested -- over and over again. I didn't care for Renee's "Haunted Heart" jazz CD. Too precious, too classical, not earthy and gritty enough. "Dark Hope" is an entirely different story. You can tell she had some really good advice in the choice of songs and the keys in which they were sung. They sit in her voice in a way that feels organic and easy. Based on things I've heard her say in interviews in the past few years, I think this CD is part of a midlife reassessment, a search for meaning and answers, even a search for more of who she really is, outside of her image as one of the century's greatest sopranos. She's an inspiration to women who are working (and playing) at rediscovering themselves as they approach 50, and I admire her courage in following her heart with this project. The themes of the songs are heavy, sober, even dark, but there's light in the darkness, at least for me. It has to do with a willingness to be honest, to look at the realities of this life, call a spade a spade, find the strength to deal with the hard stuff and come out the other side a better person. Renee has done that in her own life, and she brings this pain and metamorphosis to every song in a way that speaks to the heart. I would not call this a crossover. They call the style "Indie" but she has a style that's all her own on this CD. The only hints of crossover I hear are impeccable intonation and the amazing attentiveness to the text (lyrics, as they say in pop music). The poetry in these songs is rich and deep, and she sings it the way she sings her song recitals, with an intelligence and sensitivity that tell you she has thought long and hard about what the words mean, at least to her. Each morning on my treadmill, I find something new in these songs. Yes, there is a sameness about the instrumentals, but it's not boring. Truthfully, I expected to hate this CD, but I love it and I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates great "art songs" of any genre sung by an intelligent, creative, sincere, gifted songstress.

they will sound just like Renee. Her singing is totally devoid of emotion and feeling. I bought this CD after seeing a piece on TV about her and this album, and how she had to turn down her perfect diction to make a 'rock' album. After hearing her attempt, I'd say she needed to concentrate a whole lot more on WHAT she was singing, and less on HOW she was singing it.

This CD is just terrible, I've tried repeatedly to get into it, but even mixing it with other music, I'm forced to hit the next track button when one of these songs come on.

1stars - "When ROBOTS can sing........" (But I'm feeling much better now...)

As someone who is familiar with Renee Fleming's opera work, but not a huge opera fan, I suspect I'm more open to the idea of this CD than many long-time Fleming fans. I'm amazed but not surprised at some of the reviews criticizing the CD seemingly only because it's a break from what Fleming is "supposed" to do as an "opera diva."

I love this CD. The song selection is perfectly designed to showcase the deep, sultry tone Fleming uses on this CD. It's incredible how she can produce a sound so much lower and deeper than her soprano.

This is NOT a crossover work. It's not an opera singer trying to sing pop. It's a singer singing pop/alternative music - and doing it extremely well. You won't find "classical" affectation here.

My favorite songs are "Suddenly," "Intervention," and "Twilight... ." The only slight misstep - "In Your Eyes," which doesn't really fit in. But the rest of the CD easily dwarfs that issue. Highly, highly recommended.

There is a first time for everything in anyone's life -- and believe it or not, I have not heard of RENEE FLEMING, ever, before seeing her on Amazon, today! I believed, (at first), what I eventually found out to be an album title, (DARK HOPE), to be a memoire of a life that had triumphed over some type of adversity -- cancer, or perhaps homelessnes, etc. But, upon closer examination, I discover that Ms. Fleming is a rock-singer, and that she sings soft, dark rock music. Her voice, if she had been an opera singer, would be that of a medium contralto. (Has she ever had any connection with the opera? At this point, I don't know.....) Upon listening to a sample of her singing, (thanks, Amazon, for providing it!), I have discovered that there is an earthiness in her singing that brings to mind the acting of the late Anna Magnani.

Rock music, of whatever type, (except perhaps the songs of "The Partridge Family"), and dark earthiness in voice or acting, are NOT to my own personal taste. I will say, however, that Ms. Fleming looks to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.
She resembles the enchanting LARA PARKER, ("Angelique", on the original DARK SHADOWS), truly one of the most beautiful women ever born. I genuinely hope that Ms. Fleming can keep her beauty as long as Ms. Parker has, (she is STILL a very great beauty -- and a novelist, besides!) It's too bad that Ms. Fleming's style of music, and her vocal talents are not to my own taste. She is still, however, a very beautiful woman.

There are enough great reviews for this artist, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. If you are someone who is a voracious devourer of good music, no matter what genre, then this is for you. As a dancer who doesn't have sense enough to quit, I was uplifted, inspired, and found myself choreographing some very interesting pieces to this stunning array of works that represents a superior knowledge of classical music, and a genius for interpreting the modern. I am not an expert in music, but I have been a professor for 16 years and worked a lot with music (as therapy although I hate calling it music therapy). Good music lifts the spirit, or engages the grief, or brings out humanity, it is magical and lifts us to the highest places. All I know is that I ran downstairs, put on my pointe shoes, and danced the hell out of it. It is wonderful! and now I am going to get every single one of his cds. Where have i been?

I stumbled upon David Garrett's music by accident. Not being a fan of violin in general (more of a piano/sax lover outside of my rock/metal world), I put this into my Wishlist here at Amazon, to think about it. Every time I listened to the clips, I wanted to buy it, but always paused. Then one day in my car, the yearning for something different (than my usual rock/metal etc) led me back to this CD. It is a great CD. His mastery of his instrument, along with his love for contemporary music and youthful take on classics are very uplifting. LOVE this CD, and again, I'm not a huge fan of the violin. He's great. I've told everyone I know: check out this music!!!

Stephen Hough's taste and technique certainly aren't subject to meaningful criticism from the likes of me: this is a well-chosen program that bespeaks his intelligence and musicianship. The Polonaise-Fantasy in particular is full-bloodedly impressive, while the performances of the Berceuse and Barcarolle are endearing. I am still coming to grips with his interpretation of the Sonata--several auditions have left me preferring the new recording by Alberto Reyes on VAI. But, most unfairly as far as Mr. Hough is concerned, Mr. Reyes (as well as many others) has a distinct advantage: a decent recording. I don't know what happened but this one from Hyperion sounds to me as though someone threw a blanket over the piano, it's that murky. I had hoped that this would be a high point in the Chopin bicentennial but the recording quality is enough to preclude that.

This lovely full recording (75 minutes) consists of works composed by Chopin between 1843 and 1847 and are considered to be from Chopin's "mature" period. I guess, they are called "mature" because although Chopin was in his 30's he'd be dead (from ill-health) very soon. To me, the reason Chopin's compositional genius that is reflected in the compositions on this disc are considered "mature" is not from some premonition of Chopin of his impending doom but a "bring together" of his previous compositional skills to their greater glory--just my humble opinion. Anyway, this disc contains some gorgeous piano works by Chopin that are played most beautifully by Stephen Hough who also must be approaching his "mature" period (he's, after all, nearly 50 years of age).

Contained in the disc are the "Barcarolle" in F sharp minor; 3 Mazurkas in minor keys opus 63 and 67 and 68 (I adore them. They are very sad "little dances" that are played most beautifully by Hough); 2 Nocturnes, Opus 62; the "Polonaise-Fantasy" in A flat major that I have acquired more appreciation for mainly because of Stephen's brilliant playing; "Piano sonata #3 in B minor--my admiration of this work has increased too mainly thanks to Mr. Hough's outstanding playing of it on this recording--so full of technical virtuosity while playing with the most beautiful tone imaginable. All that I can say is BRAVO; and also contained therein is the Berceuse in D flat major.

As I stated above, Stephen must be in or fast approaching his so-called "mature" period. Not because of his age but, to me, because of the beauty of his playing as sublimely reflected in this disc.

Do read the notes to the disc there is a wonderful story written by Stephen about a "Bowler" hat and its "tie-in" with Chopin.

I love Andrea Bocelli's voice. His management sucks. I used to be able to listen to a sample of each of his songs to determine which albums to buy. His greedy opportunistic girlfriend has now made that impossible. I do not have unlimited funds. I will never buy another Bocelli item if that is how they treat his fans. I corresponded with his family when he had his first web-site before his gold-digging girlfriend took over and ran off his family. If I can't hear his work, why on earth would I want to buy it?

É sensacional a performance deste músico,uma das melhores surgidas nos últimos tempos.Alguns músicos tocam simplesmente o seu instrumento,porém Chris Botti a exemplo de outros como David Gilmour,Mark Knopfler arrancam sons de seus instrumentos.A versatilidade de Chria Botti aliada á sua capacidade de interpretação é estonteante e seu sopro inconfundível.Este Blu-ray está bem gravado e com boa qualidade de imagem.

Chris Botti s by far and wide the best smooth Jazz trumpeter in the world today. This fabulous live concert CD/DVD is a great record of a magnificent concert he did in Boston with some friends as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Anyone who knows anything about Jazz music and has any real taste will tell you that Chris Botti is a superior musician. As Sting said in his interview which are in the bonus features of the DVD - Who would have thought that his trumpet player from Sting's band - would go out and have his own solo career - and then invite him back as a guest on his own concert tour?!? And the incredible respect that Sting and Chris have for one another is no more evident than in the two songs Sting performs in this concert. I mean, you know you've really made it when you can get Sting to come out and do one song and then leave on your own show!!!
Yo-Yo Ma also features in this concert - Yo Yo Ma is royalty in the classical music world - and is undoubtedly the greatest cellist alive in the world today. The level of respect and love that all other musicians as well as all music lovers have for Yo Yo Ma is felt when he walks on stage. There is a sense of reverence almost for his musical brilliance - and this version of 'Cinema Paradiso' with Chris Botti is utterly sublime in every way.
Josh Groban does a lovely job of one of his hit's from the 'Closer' album - the Lara Fabian song 'Broken Vow'. (May i take this opportunity to say that Josh Groban does a million times better version of this song than Lara Fabian EVER did - he actually feels the dramatic simplicity of the lyric and the emotion without making it soap opera stuff).

And what a pleasant surprise - Katherine McPhee! What a great Jazz voice this young lady has!! She does a delightful rendition of I've Got You Under My Skin (Sinatra's original orchestration!). Who would have thought a young American Idol winner would actually get to rub shoulders with some of the best musicians in the industry?!

There are some heart-felt tributes in the concert as well. The first to Miles Davis' infamous 'Kind Of Blue' where Chris evokes the Miles Davis sound like only he could - with incredible tone and a sense of mystery.
The second tribute is to Jeff Buckley - and his famous version of Leonard Cohen's 'Halleluja'. His words about Jeff Buckley and his Grace album are a lovely moment.

Aerosmith's Steve Tyler makes a spontaneous 'surprise' appearance for two songs! One of them he dedicates to his father who's in the front row (Chaplin's 'Smile'). He's got a wierd mouth that Steve Tyler - he's quirky, but i could learn to like him.

John Mayer surprises us all with a Rogers and Hart song!!! Who would have thought?!?!? And hearing that the song 'Glad To Be Unhappy' was the reason he did the gig in the first place - made me respect the man a little more than I did. Another great musician alongside Chris.

Lucia Micarelli is lovely accompanying Chris in this version of Emmanuel. There is more on the DVD than on the CD. Only one or so songs are cut for the CD, but don't let that put you off. It's still got all the best ones there. Buying this combo pack is well worth the money! The band of 'cats' he plays with are the coolest jazz cats you ever did hear play smooth jazz.

The CD, DVD was great but I think the performance by Steven Tyler ruined the flow. Steven Tyler should not have performed at this concert...Tyler with the trumpet sounded pretty crappy. Big props to Lucia Micarelli and Yo-Yo Ma...their performance was beautiful...along with John Mayer. Please, Chris, no more Aerosmith or Steven Tyler performances!!!!
