"Serie de Oro: Grandes Exitos of Waldo De Los Rios" is a masterfully arranged collection of moving and stirring classical music. De Los Rios is a gifted arranger that adds beats and instrumentations to enhance and expand these compositionsinto a very modern feeling. I discovered his work on a late 60s early 70s LP called "Symphonias" and I've been addicted to his marvelous music. His style of music inspired the popular "Hooked On the Classics" series way before they were doing it. He does it right with lush music that never sounds cheap or out a synthesizer, he uses a full orchestra.
"Symphonias" is now available on Amazon and it is stunning and moving music full of expression and richness.
If you like Ennio Morricone(another favorite of mine) you'll love Waldo De Los Rios. I was saddened to here that he died in 1977 which will make his work harder to find. For a thouroughly satisfying musical experience pour a goblet of your favorite vino, put De Los Rios in the CD player and get ready for a musical experience. Superb!

5stars - "A Collection of Cool Clasical Music with a Beat" (Seth F. Weaver)

I love to have classical music on in the kitchen or on drives where I need something soothing. Waldo De Los Rios gives a very fresh sound for classical. I think that hard-core classical lovers will either kind of like or just hate this. For me, several renditions are very refreshing, such as Sinfonia N5 Opus 95 "Nuevo Mundo"; but some of this seems to come across as electrified elevator music. Too, too rushed for my tastes - and it comes across as a feeling of panic!! rather than serious intensity.

This is going to be popular as long as a certain radio dj is hocking it, but it is worth a listen. It does open a much-needed door for someone with talent in this area. Classical does not have to remain where it is, it can be played with and improved, because the standards will always be there. Perhaps this will reach a new audience. Hopefully though, it won't become a generation's only taste of classical. I hate when my niece says to me "Oh, I love this Brittney Spears song.." and I tell her that it's an imitation of a Bobby Brown song from the 80's.

My history of listening to classic music is limited. I remember the priests and brothers going to some classic play in Dayton, Ohio. They were listening to orchestra music and quizzed me on the tunes.

When I luckily rattled off Chopin and Bach they were astonished. I'm a writer of mystery and suspense novels. I have four novels listed on Amazon under AUTHOR Richard Ondo who is the alias Richard Stern. It's a treasured secret. I'm sure you'll enjoy THE LOVE OF LAKE ERIE.

I have followed Il Divo since their beginning and have all of their CDs and DVDs. The book wasn't a disappointment either. What an incredible journey they have been on. I admire Simon Cowell's handiwork in putting operatic voices to work on popular songs. His vision come to fruition must be more than satisfying. The young men describe each of their careers and training that led to their auditions and Il Divo. My only complaint is that the cover fell off of the book only part of the way through reading it. The pictures are wonderful too. I am a great grandmother so although they are easy on the eyes, their music is what captivates my imagination. The book filled in all the questions of how four extremely well trained singers can get the egos to calm down long enough to create their "sound". The separate lives they live keeps them from becoming stale and ever interesting.

The CD, DVD was great but I think the performance by Steven Tyler ruined the flow. Steven Tyler should not have performed at this concert...Tyler with the trumpet sounded pretty crappy. Big props to Lucia Micarelli and Yo-Yo Ma...their performance was beautiful...along with John Mayer. Please, Chris, no more Aerosmith or Steven Tyler performances!!!!

There are not many times in one's life where pure perfection is experienced but the "Chris Botti in Boston" DVD and music CD is one of them. Before you even listen to the music or see the DVD, you experience a mastery of package design and photography; the inside and outside black and white triptych is a creative visual feast as is the content booklet which is hidden in the center section.

From the first note, you know that something special is unfolding because of a tremendous sense of staging and audio space as created by the virtuoso master audio recordist, Al Schmitt, who should be considered the sixth member of Chris Botti's group.The other virtuoso artists in Chris' group include: Billy Childs-piano, Mark Whitfield-guitar, Robert Hurst-bass, and Billy Kilson-drums; masters all, each one bringing a unique talent to the event. Their synergy and energy synthesize into something unimaginable! All of this overlaid upon Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra whose very name invokes its well known excellence.

As if all this wasn't enough, there are the guest appearances by Sting, Josh Groban, Steven Tyler, YoYo Ma, John Mayer, Katherine McPhee, Lucia Micarelli, Sy Smith, Dominic Miller, Russ Irwin. What treasures and a splendid gift to the audience!

I won't even try to describe the performances in this work which are all beyond mere words so they must be heard.

I must also recognize the amazing multi-camera video work: the flying camera boom shots, the Steadicams, and every other implementation and process of the videomaker's art which left me breathless.

My personal experience? I am left with tears streaming down my face from the sight and sound of this magnificent work.

The CD is wonderful and had been recommended as a gift to an elderly friend. I didn't open the package until the day I needed it....ooops, the case was cracked all down the front side. The CD was not damaged so I did put it in a new blank case and was able to use it. If the case were wrapped in bubble wrap, all would have been fine...Perhaps you could do that in the future. I was grateful you had this in stock and at such a reasonable price!

The first time I listened to Ave Maria (first track) I burst out into tears. I have continued this odd behavior. The Priests amazing voices touch me to the core. Their voices resonate in my soul unlike any music I've ever heard. This Christmas I listened to this CD countless times while eating Trappist made fruitcake. I truly felt moved by the Holy spirit! Listening to their beautiful, spirit inspired voices is unlike any musical experience I've ever had. By the way I'm a Buddhist, who's only experience with Catholicism (or Christianity) was four (rather enjoyable) years in Catholic grade school. If your really want the full experience, turn it up!!

With so many artists re-treading the same ground in classical music-- endless recordings of the same popular warhorses, especially by violinists-- Hilary Hahn is charting her own path. First, these are not overly-recorded pieces: a couple selections from the St Matthew Passion and Mass in B Minor, plus a bunch of cantatas. Second, no other recording of these pieces (I listened to a bunch for sake of comparison) sound anything like Hahn's-- she places the violin and voices front and center for this recording, regardless of where Bach's sheet music and previous recordings place them in the orchestral mix, and that's a great thing. Third, Hahn continues her musical journey with this album, applying her signature style (clean, fast, crisp... dare I say, American?) to music that's never been recorded with that kind of violin sound.

In sum, this is new music. Which is exactly what classical music needs.

Baritone Matthias Goerne and soprano Christine Schäfer are stellar. Hahn shines. It's a great album. Looking forward to Hahn's recording of Jennifer Higdon's violin concerto.

4stars - "This music has never sounded like this before" (Erik Ketzan)

Toss three well-known musicians into a studio with minimal rehearsal, and this is what you get. The participants sound bored stiff, particularly Hahn. I'm generally a fan of her playing, but here she is monochromatic and inexpressive. Schaefer is clearly over the hill, and Goerne sounds indisposed.

All of these artists have done much better work elsewhere - both they, and Bach deserve better than this mishmash of "bleeding hunks", perfunctorily performed.

1stars - "Major label foolishness at its worst." (Bill)

Poor ensemble at times, a thin orchestral timbre, dreadful tuning and wobbly technique from Christine Schaefer, and (dare I say it) a rather hoarse version of Matthias Goerne's once-lovely basso! Plus I find Hilary Hahn's playing utterly uninteresting. Who's to blame for such a botch-up, I wonder? Goerne has recorded some of the most mellifluous Bach ever, and though he's not ostensibly an "early music" specialist, he's shown great sensitivity to historically informed performance practices. Schaefer, I fear, just doesn't know much about such practices, or else she doesn't have the vocal technique to execute them. In any case, this would be my choice for least appealing 'topselling' CD of the year.

2stars - "Sorry! But Not Very Good at All!" (Giordano Bruno)

I bought this CD on recommendation from my fellow reviewer Mr. Ogan, had high expectations, and have not been disappointed. Great idea, and overall fine execution, although with some differentiation.

Matthias Goerne is easily worth 5 stars, with his warm, expressive, smooth voice that goes so well with Bach. Christine Schaefer overall also delivers a fine performance, although at times her soprano sounds a little thin, in particular in "erbarme Dich" (which, in all fairness, has been written for a deeper, fuller alto voice). Hilary Hahn plays beautifully, very clean, with marvelously intelligent phrasing. Sometimes I wish though she would dare to adopt a bigger tone, in particular when paired with Goerne.

The weakest part, in my view, is the Munich Chamber Orchestra, which often provides little more than a shallow backdrop to the soloists, rather than emphasizing the counterpunctual lines that Bach has also written into the orchestra score. Maybe it is also suffering from what appear to be rather dry acoustics.

Bottom line: 4 stars (not everything can be 5), and a must for Hahn-, Goerne- and Schaefer-Fans.

4stars - "Great idea, fine although somewhat uneven execution" (Henry Kaspar)

It was Hilary Hahn's idea to create this unique concept album that juxtaposes violin and voice in a set of widely varied Bach arias and duets with solo violin. There is no questioning the credentials of these fine musicians, particularly in the realm of Bach interpretation, and they deliver an outstanding recording that merits many repeat listenings. Some may argue that this grouping of "soloists" with continuo accompaniment results in a lack of uniform style, but historicity and conventionality notwithstanding, the balance is quite pleasing and musical.

The sheer variety of Bach works on this single album is remarkable, including selections from the St. Matthew Passion, cantatas both sacred and secular, and the Mass in B Minor. One is hard-pressed to identify outstanding tracks, but some of my favorites include "Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder," "Wann kommst du, mein Heil?," "Angenehmer Zephyrus," and "Erbarme dich." The "Erbarme dich," probably the most well-known work on the album, is particularly poignant in its curious blend of austerity and sentiment.

When listening to this recording, one might not be able to decide whether it sounds old-fashioned or distinctly new. The best description probably includes both aspects. Whether you are new to Baroque music or have long appreciated it, you can't go wrong here. This recording is a true gem.

Beautiful music. Divided into 3 sections, one a piano is featured, one the violin and the cello in the third.

5stars - "Musical perfection" (Jacqueline Popielec)

**** 1/2. Compared to my CD of the solid, direct Beaux Arts Trio, and remembrances of the scholarly but energetic Stern-Istomin-Rose group, the classical superstars of this new album perform the Mendelssohn works with emphasis on grace and joy. The sweet and lyrical Op. 49, comes off smoothly but without inner depth; the more serious, classical Op. 66 offers thought and emotional gravitas. Perlman and Ma were mentored by Stern and both play with lightness and fluidity. There is no roughness or edginess to their sound; thus, their approach is fitting for the early romantic Mendelssohn. Do not expect a wide range of temperments; these compositions are andante and allegro, but the final two movements of the second trio are vigorous and bright. I wonder if this senior trio will go on to other issues of, for example, the Schubert, Schumann, and Dvorak trios. Or perhaps they will venture to contempory trios. I am pleased with this particular recording and recommend these light, popular pieces for those whose interest in chamber work is still developing.

4stars - "Romantic Trios with Grace and Joy" (Dr. Debra Jan Bibel)

This is a very elegant album. It is classical chamber music that doesn't disappoint the deepest part of your heart or brain. Honestly I am not familiar with Ax or Perlman, but Yo Yo Ma is a favorite of mine. I do favor a more contemporary flare, but this music stands on its own. The pieces flow easily from one to another and there are no deep shifts from one piece to another. I love the three instruments together. These three dance together and flirt in a wonderful singsong CD. This cd is full of just beautiful music! This comes highly recommended to the classical fan.

4stars - "Delicious and Classical" (JRay)

This album to commemorate Mendelssohn's bicentennial has shown up a little past 2009, but it's a welcome return to chamber music by three stars in the classical world. Of the major labels, Sony BMG seems to have given up on chamber music almost completely. Thank goodness we have an archive of recordings from the era when Yo-Yo Ma and Isaac Stern, often in the company of Emanuel Ax, produced an outpouring of Brahms CDs that remain the best modern renditions. Perlman has made fewer appearances in chamber music since his early days but is, of course, accomplished in his own right.

Here they compete with the ghost of Stern, whose all but definitive account of the two Mendelssohn Piano Trios with partners Leonard Rose and Eugene Istomin derives from an even earlier era of recordings. As befits the performers' gray hair, these new recordings are seasoned and relaxed. The whirlwind Scherzo in Trio no. 1 won't stir up any dust; the opening Molto allergro e agitato is far from being either very fast or agitated. Is it right to turn the finale, marked "very fast" and "passionate," into something more civilized? The same experienced, suave restraint hovers over Trio no. 2 as well. Comparisons with Istomin-Stern-Rose or the trio led by Julia Fischer on PentaTone, not to mention the ultra-energized Martha Argerich and Friends (EMI), reveal how this music sounds when played with more vitality. On the other hand, there's no denying that the playing here bespeaks Cadillac musicianship, even if it rarely gets out of first gear

Can't get enough of this album. He really makes the violin speak. Being a rock roll person at heart and a closet classical fan, this really gives you the best of both worlds. Only wish the songs were longer and more of them. First heard of David Garrett on a PBS Special. Been a fan ever since. Wold have liked to have had all of the PBS songs on the album. Anxiously awaiting his next release. Even bought two. The wife wanted a copy also.

This is a wonderful musical experience. There is so much talent on this DVD> And of course Bocelli is just awesome. He has such a stunning open free voice. It really transcends you while you listen and watch him.

5stars - "Fabulous" (Ariella Vaccarino)

I'm not so much a fan of that kind of music and I'm more rock oriented. I bought initially this DVD for my parents in law who are both Italian and Bocelli/Pavarotti fans, but this DVD just became overnight the very best item of my whole DVD collection, not to speak about the impact on my parents in law who still can't believe it. If I could have put 6 stars here, I would have done so. Everything is just perfect in this record: sound, image, performance, musical skills of every single musician and especially Sarah Brightman whom I didn't know before. I'll closely watch her career from now on and I'm just praying these two wonder voices will again join together one of these days.

I tried to find the DVD Vivere: Live in Tuscany, with Andrea Bocelli, but 3 bookstores didn't carry it, so I was thrilled to purchase it on Amazon. My boyfriend and I watched it together and thoroughly enjoyed it. The songs were gorgeous, the setting was phenomenal, and the different entertainers in addition to Bocelli were top-notch. I'd highly recommend it! Well worth your time and money.
