I really like the Family Tree Maker 2009. We recently purchased a new computer and printer and had everything from our old Family Tree Maker #8 converted to this new one. It worked perfectly.

FTM 2008 and 2009 are full of bugs, are very slow running and lack some of the features that were included in FTM v16 (an excellent program). If you can get a copy of FTM v16: get it.

My wife is an avid genealogist and has been using Family Tree Maker for many years. I purchased this for her to replace FTM 2006 that she has been using for the last 3 years or so since that version would not run properly on our new Windows Vista PC (by the way, this 2009 version runs fine on Vista 64 bit, SP1). We had purposefully skipped the upgrade to FTM 2008 because of all the negative reviews we had read.

My wife has been using FTM 2009 for about 3 weeks now, and she loves it. She tells me that there is nothing she could do in FTM 2006 that she cannot do in FTM 2009. (One caveat here - she uses FTM extensively as a research tool and as, of course, a database, but she does not do much printing / publishing with it). She did say there is some "re-learning" to be done, figuring out where to go in the new interface to get things done, but she found the included printed documentation helpful in that regard. Furthermore, she loves how well integrated the Internet is with the rest of the application; e.g., she really likes the integration of Microsoft Virual Earth under the "Places" tab.

One minor issue we had getting it all set up was the download & install of the Enhanced Image Viewer. While the installation file itself downloaded from Ancestry.com OK, it was not an executable file as downloaded. In order to run it, I had to manually add ".exe" to the end of the file name to make it an executable. Then, every time we tried to run it, we got a generic error message that said the installation had failed & to contact FTM support. Only after rebotting the PC & restarting FTM 2009, would it then install. But, in the end, I did not feel this minor annoyance warranted taking away a "star" from my ranking.

I have been a very strong advocate for Family TreeMaker since the early 1990s but would not recommend or endorse the 2009 version to anyone. I admit that I did not purchase the 2008 version as I had recently purchased the Version 16 and only upgrade approx. every 3 years, but had heard there were problems with it. I was very excited about 2009; however, it loads very, very slowly and when I initially installed and then tried to copy over my database from the Version 16 program, I lost over 200 individuals. This I find totally unacceptable. I especially didn't like the new "look" or the charts - they are not much different than from before. The program is hard to navigate around in, and I couldn't find anywhere to import data from a informational cd. The media section is ok, but I prefer seeing the photos in the scrapbook section for individuals rather than jumbled all together. As for being "user-friendly" ... this program is not! Save your money is my suggestion. I had signed up for the on-line special offered about the program but never was emailed w/ the time and password until after it occurred. I am very happy that I didn't uninstall Version 16 before trying 2009!!

I just upgraded to FTM 2009 from a 1996 version and I am so thankful I did. New capabilities, new tools and much more intuitive. This is really going to help my family tree work. My entire family is excited about searching for their ancestors, their history and FTM 2009 gives us the tools we need and the professional results we want.

This is the most creative upgrade to Family Tree Maker, well, ever. Functionality is greatly improved, graphics, instant "hints", reporting, "uploadability" and much more. The downsides are only a few: 1) freezes more than it should; 2) double dates (1711/1712, etc) not only don't apear automatically, they can't even be inserted manually; 3) takes a bit more self trainning to find everything you're accustomed to using. The optional trainig manual "The Official Guide to Family Tree Maker 2009" is a must. Genealogy Networks has been helpful so far when I've gotten completely stuck on a few issues. Get their phone number and call.....I really don't find the self help guides very 'self-helping'! All in all, it's worth the time and effort if you enjoy keeping one or multiple data bases on file.

My wife and I have used Family Tree Maker for the last 5 years. I am generally one who always wants the latest version of programs -- but I had seen the early questionable reviews of FTM 2008 and stayed away from it. I watched carefully as the reviews toward the end (with the three major improvements) started to turn. I corresponded with Ancestry during the end of testing phase for FTM2009 and decided to take the risk. It was WELL-WORTH the risk and the wait. My wife does not like change and she was ready to stay with FTMv16 until she saw more of what I was doing and how things allow you to see more information clearly. We have not tried all of the features yet and there are a few disappointments (CSV export is not as good), but we are really excited about being able to continue our family research farther and wider back into history. I strongly recommend going for the Platinum version for the extra resources and the "built-in" 6-month subscription to Ancestry. (Hint: Do not activate the subscription until you are ready with everything else -- data updated and names entered).

Still missing many valuble features of FTM16 I guess will continue to us FT16

I've had a lot of problems trying to install it. It's really the fault of my computer. I can't get it to install NEt 2.1.
I've had to install it on my lap top and it seems to work fine there, it's just not where I want it.
They have also emailed me and told me it was no longer supported. Since I've only had it a couple of months, I feel this isn't fair.
I like the program, it's just not for older systems.

I have used Family Tree Maker since 1996. I was very disappointed with the 2008 version but I stuck with it because I knew it was an entirely new program and it would take time to find out what all the issues are and make the corrections. I was very glad to find out that they decided to scrap 2008 and were working on the 2009 version. I was a beta tester for 2009 and I was very impressed with how hard the staff worked to correct problems and how they were willing to listen to suggestions. One of the big problems with 2008 was the fact that it constantly crashed. Since I have been working with 2009 crashing hasn't been an issue. Since the media files are kept in a separate file, 2009 does not take as long to open as it did in versions prior to 2008. I do know that some people still say it takes too long to open for them, so they are still working on this problem. It has been said that the charts and reports are not as good as they were in versions prior to 2008. New charts and reports have been added and more are expected to be added, but this is an area where you must be willing to "play" with the options to really see what is available. Since I had so many problems with 2008 I didn't use the new features that were introduced, but I have tried them in 2009 and they are very useful. The web clipping feature is helpful. Please make someone aware of any issue's or concerns that you may have with 2009. Issues do need to be prioritized so your issue may not be taken care of right away, but someone is listening to all issues.

I have beta-tested both FTM 2008 and 2009 and have had excellent dealings with all the staff involved. From the first I realized that this product is a highly progressive and intuitive program, and it has been a joy to use. The continuing research by the developers of additional modifications to make the software even more user friendly is always on-going. I have used Family Tree Maker for a number of years, and I would truly be lost if I were to revert to either older versions or try and cope with another brand of genealogical sofware entirely. The on-line tutorials are great, as there are always little things that you either haven't tried, or forget about. All in all, I highly recommend FTM 2009 as an essential tool in any serious genealogical research.

I had a very old version of this program and loved it. This version looks great. It was easy to import my old family trees, charts, & reports. The only problem I've found so far is that the manual is paperless. I prefer to write in a paper manual, use stickies, etc.
The company quickly replied to my question and the product shipped in a reasonable amount of time.

I've used Reunion since version 6, I think, and it is the best genealogy software I've ever used. I've tried Family Tree Maker on Windows and Reunion blows it away. FTM is just ugly, where Reunion has a nice interface and is easy to use. You can export your family tree to the GEDCOM standard and upload it to Geni.com, or import your old Windows family tree file into Reunion, though you'll have to import all the media files separately, as GEDCOM doesn't seem to support media.

I considered other Mac genealogy programs, but decided to stick with Reunion. One of the great things about this software is the fantastic personal support that leister.com gives you. BTW, this is a universal app, in case you're wondering. A lot of genealogy applications seem to be lagging behind in that respect.

All in all, I consider this the best genealogy software available, on mac or Windoze. You can't go wrong with Reunion!

Seems to work fine. Was able to load large pre-existing genealogy file. Some trouble between GEDCOM file codes used by Family Tree Maker, but not recognized by Roots Magic. It will take some hand editing to fix that. Caught by Roots Magic, but another good reason to abandon Family Tree Maker which has tied itself to unacceptible, unwanted, uneeded, Internet connections. Quick delivery of the CD directly from the source company.

I was advised to purchase this program by a seasoned genealogist. It has a multitude of features, some of which I have not had experience with as of yet. It can sort a large number of people to unique data bases. Overall, I am very happy with the product, however, if you need to call the tech help for this product good luck! The support is surely, grumpy, and rude! They expect everyone to be IT savy! He was impatient when I asked him to guide me through my problem step by step. I do not have a computer background and their help screens often don't clarify how to solve a problem that I am having. It is a great product for the price...just don't count on having tech support!

I have been doing genealogy for over 15 years, and started out with very rudimentary versions of Family Tree Maker. I was never happy with FTM's management of sources -- it seemed to be much more interested in how to make things "pretty" and sources, the heart and soul of real genealogy, always got short shrift.

Then, some years ago, I switched to Heritage Family Tree. I loved this program, even though it could be quite klunky in many ways and the charting software that came with the program was always cumbersome and often crashed. However, its source handling was the best out there, able to format and sort sources in such a way that source information could be entered completely and formatted well. It had other good built in features that I really liked.

However, they stopped supporting it, and although it was supposed to work with Windows XP, I experienced so many crashes with XP that I knew I had to start finding an alternative. The death knell came with Vista, and HFTD wouldn't even boot up under Vista. And then it turned out that their GEDCOM exporter dropped a LOT of information out of the source material I'd so painstakingly entered.

I had kept up with Family Tree Maker, and they came out with a new version. I decided to try to salvage what was left of my old family tree (over 2500 individuals and cannibalized source material that dropped half the information, cry!). However, this version (FTM 2008) is absolutely awful; the interface is about as far a departure from logical data entry, it doesn't do a lot of basic charts, and it is just so terribly bloated with crap I will never use that I knew I had to find an alternative. On someone's recommendation, I decided to check out RootsMagic.

After downloading the trial version, I was hooked almost immediately. It's simple, streamlined, and has fantastic source handling. When you enter a source, you're given the option to choose Source Wizard; normally I hate wizards, but this one gives a nice interface for inputting different types of sources (census, death/birth/marriage certificates, books, interviews, etc) in such a way that they are uniform and formatted for footnotes.

One feature I really like is the ability to add a married couple in a census together as "Census (family)". This eliminates the need to enter identical census information on two people in a family. I do wish they would extend this to the ability to select multiple members of a family, so you could enter both parents and children with one click. I realize that children did not always appear on a census with parents (I have a lot of cases where teenage boys worked on other farms), but a dialogue that would let you choose other members of the family to add to a census would reduce input errors and time. However, there is a handy "Memorize" function for sources, so it's easy to paste the same source into multiple entries. It's the next best thing.

It has built-in to-dos, so as you're entering family members and need to remember to do something, you can input a to-do related to that individual or family. This feature includes prioritization, date opened, date last worked on, date closed, and a place to add notes.

Like any new program it takes a little getting used to, but I find myself able to move easily among individuals and families. The Search feature is particularly nice because it includes not only the name of the individual, but also the birth and death dates so you can see which one you are selecting before you do so. This is handy in cases where you have more than one person with the same name and no middle initials to distinguish them.

Backup is simple; it archives a ZIP file of your day's work onto any external media you choose. Instead of overwriting the whole file every time, it only overwrites an existing file if you've changed it on the same day. Otherwise, it saves them incrementally, so you have the version you worked on last week archived as well as the one you are working on this way. This way, if something disastrous happens, like you discover that the 200 relatives you spent the last week painstakingly putting in are actually not related to you at all, or you accidentally replace all instances of "Gary, Lake, Indiana" with "Inverness, Citrus, Florida", you can roll back to a version without the mistakes.

The program is simple, straightforward, great for the historian. It's not as cute and sexy as some other, more bloated genealogy programs, but it does everything a serious genealogical researcher needs it to do and a little more besides. And you can't beat the price.

I just got this as Christmas gift and am very disappointed because I was hoping I could use it with my PSE. Here are my main issues:
1) it allows you to email your final work but it converts the project into an .avi file (movie file) with very poor quality. On top of that it includes advertisement of the software in your project. I was very disappointed because I spent a couple of hours making digital birthday party invitation and when I emailed to myself the result looked like a poor/cheap invitation with advertiments.
2) all cliparts can only be used with their proprietary software. You cannot export them to other programs such as PSE or convert them into other formats like jpeg or bmp.

The kit is basically easy to use and you can get started without having to read too many instructions. It takes up a lot of memory. I've used it for a couple of projects and they've come out fairly professionaly done. The e-mail postcards are next to worthless and are basically free advertisements for Hallmark which turned me off to the whole set. If I pay for it, I don't want to become a walking billboard from some corporation.
I'd recommend it to beginners. bg

This program comes with a small but effective word editor. On the left panel of the screen there are a series of statements or questions meant to joggle your memory about past events.

When you enter the persons birthdate, the series of questions are customized for the life span of the person. The questions and categories containing the questions can be customized.

Photos can be added to the records.

When you've finished entering your data, the program will generate a report that can be printed, saved in RTF format or saved as a PDF.

Requests in the forum are for a table of contents and an index. Neither of these are available now.

If you have a genealogy program, much of the data can be imported using GEDCOM. The program will read data from a ROOTS MAGIC data base directly.

Family Tree Heritage Deluxe 7.0 is the latest version of the venerable Heritage Family Tree. As such, it has all the features of the solid earlier version plus some welcome additions including a field for recording DNA information, a useful individual summary page, the ability to print family books, and links to on-line resources. Although FTH 7.0 may not be as glitzy as more expensive packages, it is full-featured, has many useful tools and is a great value. FTH 7.0's data can be imported/exported to most popular genealogy programs so there is no need to be concerned if one of the more pricey programs catches your eye in the future.

I have only one quibble with FHT 7.0. Individual Sofware's package and the on-line brochure for the product indicate that one can create multi-media presentations and burn them to DVD to share with family or bring to reunions. While Passages Express is indeed bundled with the installation CD, it is the limited Standard Edition. In order to access advanced features, including DVD burning, one needs to upgrade to Passages Express Deluxe--at an additional cost of $19.95 for the "Deluxe license." There is no indication anywhere on the box or in the included matter that you must pay more to burn DVDs--a glaring oversight, especially since the claim that the program will burn DVDs appears in three different places on the box. This sort of marketing technique makes one wonder if there are any other features that are limited or not included. Individual Software should correct their packaging or include the upgrade at no charge.

While the over-stated claim about DVD burning is annoying, the Family Tree Heritage itself does everything a good genealogy program should do and does it well. FTH 7.0's flawlessly organizes scapbook items such as scanned documents; Word and text files; images; PDF files; and sound and video files within individual records.

Beginners should learn the basics of genealogy terminology and data gathering before diving in, but with program's editing features, mistakes and mis-steps are easily corrected.

FTH 7.0's low list price is attractive and some retail packages currently (December 2008) include a $10 mail-in rebate.

I BOUGHT THIS ALONG W/SCRAPBOOK FACTORY DELUX 4.0. OF THE 2 I REALLY PREFER SCRAPBOOK FACTORY DELUX. CK SCRAPBOOKING'S GRAPHICS ARE MOSTLY CHEEZY CLIP ART TYPE. I DID CREATE SOME DECENT PAGES WITH IT THOUGH. HOWEVER IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ONE THAT CREATES MORE REALISTIC PAGES, GO FOR THE SCRAPBOOK FACTORY DELUX. IT IS WELL WORTH THE EXTRA $.

Well, I thought I'd make the leap into digital scrapbooking using this product. It installs easily and is not too difficult to learn to use, but to tell the truth, I guess I'm more of a paper, scissors, glue type because I find it a lot more relaxing to create my layouts that way. So, I'm sure I haven't scratched the surface of what the product can do, but I am making good use of all the fonts that came with it for titles and journaling.

The graphics quality isn't that great. In today's day and age, I know the technology exists for better graphics on Scrapbook software.

so much fun. It does take some playing around with it. The help
resource is pretty good and I'm figuring out how to do more and
