I read some of the 1 star reviews - I feel sorry for them, but did not have any problems. Installed on both computers in our home, laptop and desktop running xp professional. No problems ever. It does take a long time to set up, so I do it and save it for my son who is 7. He needs a little guidance, but does it mostly himself. Lots of superfluous extras, but still good. My last experience was with the original version in sixth grade 25+ years ago on an Apple. This is MUCH improved. We really enjoy the game. If you buy a second small wagon, you can carry more. Buy oxen (6 or more for one wagon, 10 for 2) to carry the weight. Do not use the Conestoga wagon - it is too heavy regardless of what the pictures show. Do not buy any furniture or any heavy iron items. Hope you enjoy the game. Make sure you use your skill points at the very beginning, they really help.

I don't know if I wasn't paying attention, or was just not informed. But this program doesn't work with macs even though it was used on the old apple2GS which is just a super old version of a mac. Don't get this if you have a mac!

said it would work on vista well definately not to my satisfaction took hours to find a patch for it to work at all. Finally got it to work but some of the features are lost which is a shame. This is a wonderful game used to enjoy it on my xp thus wanted it for my vista it sits collecting dust due to the lost things for vista but I highly recommmend it for XP

Okay, for starters, I've been writing scripts professionally for year... for Warners, Paramount, ABC, CBS, etc.. and for myself.

THE PROS:
1) It's THE industry standard. You can send Final Draft files to any studio, no problem. Everybody uses it.
2) It's easy to jump between slug lines, action, dialog, etc.
3) Keeping track of revisions is simple and works.

THE CONS:
1) Buggy as hell. In fact, its embarrassingly buggy and the company hasn't fix the bugs IN YEARS!!! Guess when you dominate an industry, why waste money on making the product work as advertised. This policy worked wonders for the American auto industry, didn't it.
2) If you have a problem with their bugs, call the company and they charge you $2 per minute to solve their software screw ups.
3) Their "collabowriter" feature. Hah. I've known countless writers over the years in Hollywood. Never met who got that to work.
4) No updates in years!
5) Oh, did I mention buggy?
6) Notes feature is super basic. Barely useable.

Final Draft certainly has a monopoly on the screenwriting software market; it is the industry standard. However, because they don't have to compete, they also don't seem to be motivated to fix the bugs in their product. I have bought the last three versions of the product and put them to good use. I just wish they would figure out a way to fix the all too frequent crashing trouble. I have lost more than a few pages of work due to unexplained crashes that their tech support department cannot seem to explain/fix. Their pre-made TV templates seem to be the most buggy. That said, it is a really helpful program, but just make sure if you choose to use Final Draft: SAVE OFTEN.

My child is having issues with phonics. We ordered this game in the hopes to give him a love for language and phonics. It worked. He is performing better on his phonics and language tests-he is now passing them. He enjoys reading, and he is actually writing stories. Another reviewer here claims that I can Read With Phonics does not install easily on Microsoft Windows XP. NOT TRUE! I have XP and every Reader Rabbit game works perfectly on it. I own just about everyone out there, and my son (age 5) is a great fan of the reader rabbit software. This game does an excellent job of teaching reading and phonics in a fun way. If you have a child ready to learn to read, get this game! You won't regret it! And you can get it so cheap here on amazon, too. I paid a lot more a couple of years ago.

My order arrived today via a detour. When I'd first tried to order this Home and Student edition, I encountered an insoluble problem when checking out: Amazon doesn't sell software to buyers in China. I then ordered it and had it delivered to a U.S. address of one of friends. Then her husband mailed it to my office address in Beijing. And my colleague brought it to me today when he and the lovely lady came to my home for a super.

I read reviews complaining about installation errors. My installation went fine and it works.

Strongly recommended for those who love Britannica and want to take advantange of today's electronic technologies that make it easier than ever to use it!

The Encyclopedia Britannica 2009 (established in 1768), both in its Ultimate (now also called "Student and Home") and Deluxe versions, builds on the success of its completely revamped previous editions in 2006-8. The rate of innovation in the last three versions was impressive and welcome. It continues apace in this rendition with Britannica Biographies (Great Minds and Leaders), Classical Music (500 audio files arranged by composer), and a great Workspace for Project Management (a kind of friendly digital den). Generous 6-12 months of free access to the myriad riches of the Britannica Online complete the package.

The Britannica comes bundled with an atlas (close to 1800 maps linked to articles and 287 World Data Profiles of individual countries and territories); the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, augmented by a Spanish-English translation dictionary; classic articles from previous editions; eleven yearbooks; an Interactive Timeline with 4000+ indexed timeline entries; a Research Organizer; and a Knowledge Navigator (called The Brain or BrainStormer). All told, it offers a directory of more than 166,000 reviewed and vetted links to online content.

In its new form, the Britannica is as user-friendly as the Encarta. With a new A to Z Quick Search feature, monthly updates and the aforementioned 6-12 months of free access to its impressive powerhouse online Web site, it is bound to give the former tough competition.

The Britannica's newest interface is even more intuitive and uncluttered than previously and is great fun to use. It offers morsels of knowledge, some of it date-specific, appetizingly presented through a ticker tape of visuals that leisurely scrolls across the bottom of the screen plus highly edifying interactive tours of articles and attendant media.

When you enter even the first few letters of a term in the search box, it offers various options and is persistent: no need to click on the toolbar's "search" button every time you want to find something in this vast storehouse of knowledge. Moreover, the user can save search results onto handy "Virtual Notecards". Whole articles can be copied onto the seemingly inexhaustible Workspace.

The new Britannica's display is tab-based, avoiding the erstwhile confusing proliferation of windows with every move. Most importantly, articles appear in full, not in sections. This major improvement facilitates the finding of relevant keywords in and the printing of entire texts. These are only a few of the numerous alterations and enhancements.

Perhaps the most refreshing change is the Britannica's Update Center. Dozens of monthly updates and new, timely articles are made available online (subject to free registration). A special button alerts the user when an entry in the base product has been updated.

Regrettably, unlike in the Encarta, the updates cannot be downloaded to the user's computer or otherwise incorporated into the vast encyclopedia. Moreover, the product does not alert its user to the existence of completely new articles, only to updated ones. It takes a manual scan of the monthly lists to reveal newly added content.

Speaking of updates, one must not forget to dwell on the Britannica's unequalled yearbooks. Each annual volume contains the year in events, scientific developments, and everything you wanted to know about the latest in any and every conceivable field of human endeavor or nature. About 10,500 articles culled from the last 11 editions buttress and update the Encyclopedia's anyhow impressive offerings.

The Britannica provides considerably more text than any other extant encyclopedia, print or digital. But it has noticeably enhanced its non-textual content over the years (the 1994-7 editions had nothing or very little but words, words, and more words): it now boasts in excess of 22-30,000 images and illustrations (depending on the version) and 900 video and audio clips. This is not to mention the Britannica Classics: articles from Britannica's most famous contributors-from Sigmund Freud to Harry Houdini, Marie Curie to Orville Wright.

The Britannica fully supports serious research. It is a sober assemblage of first-rate essays, up to date bibliographies, and relevant multimedia. It is a desktop university library: thorough, well-researched, comprehensive, trustworthy.

The Britannica's 84-103,000 articles (depending on the version) are long and thorough, supported by impressive bibliographies, and written by the best scholars in their respective fields. The company's Editorial Board of Advisors reads like the who's who of the global intellectual and scientific community.

The Britannica is an embarrassment of riches. Users often find the wealth and breadth of information daunting and data mining is fast becoming an art form. This is why the Britannica incorporated the BrainStormer to cope with this predicament. But an informal poll I conducted online shows that few know how to deploy it effectively.

The Britannica also sports Student and Elementary versions of its venerable flagship product, replete with a Homework Helpdesk and interactive tutorials, but it is far better geared to tackle the information needs of adults and, even more so, professionals. It provides unequalled coverage of its topics. Ironically, this is precisely why the market positioning of the Britannica's Elementary and Student Encyclopedias is problematic: with Wikipedia and even the Encarta around, the Britannica's brand is distinctly adult and scholarly.

Still, the 2009 editions of both the Student and Elementary encyclopedias improve on the past in terms of both coverage and facilities: the Homework Helpdesk is a collection of useful homework resources including a video subject browse, online learning games and activities, online subject spotlights, and how-to documents on topics such as writing a book review. There are also Learning Games and Activities: hundreds of fun and interactive games and activities to help students with subjects like Math, Science, and Social Studies.

The current edition is fully integrated with the Internet. Apart from the updates, it offers additional and timely content and revisions on a dedicated Web site. The digital product includes a staggering number of links (165,808!) to third party content and articles on the Web. The GeoAnalyzer, which compares national statistical data and generates charts and graphs, is now Web-based and greatly enhanced.

The Britannica would do well to offer a browser add-on search bar and to integrate with desktop search tools from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and others. Currently it offers search results through Google but this requires the user to install add-ons or plug-ins and to go through a convoluted rite of passage. A seamless experience is in the cards. Users must and will be able to ferret content from all over - their desktop, their encyclopedias, and the Web - using a single, intuitive interface.

Some minor gripes:

The atlas, dictionary, and thesaurus incorporated in the Britannica are still surprisingly outdated. Why not use a more current - and dynamically updated - offering? What about dictionaries for specialty terms (medical or computer glossaries, for instance)?

Despite considerable improvement over the previous edition, the Britannica still consumes (not to say hogs) computer resource far in excess of the official specifications. This makes it less suitable for installation on older PCs and on many laptops. If you own a machine with anything earlier than Pentium 3 and less than 4 Gb of really free space - forget it!

The Britannica uses a new graphic and text renderer. On some systems, the user needs to modify his or her desktop settings to get rid of jagged fonts and blurry photos. The software also seriously conflicts with security applications (especially anti-virus and firewall products). This edition, though, is finally compatible with the latest QuickTime.

But that's it. Don't think twice. Run to the closest retail outlet (or surf to the Britannica's Web site) and purchase the 2009 edition now. It offers excellent value for money (less than $40, with a rebate) and significantly enhances you access to knowledge and wisdom accumulated over centuries all over the world. I went to the MAC store with the CD and they told me that it's six generations old and completely obsolete!!!! Do NOT buy this if you plan on using it w/ your MAC. Still waiting to hear about my refund from NothingButSoftware.

My son loves these CD-roms. He is almost 5 and plays them a lot. He is learning quite a bit. Plus, there are 3 different levels, so as he gets better, he gets more challenged. I'm impressed with this.

As an encyclopedia, it does a great job. At this price you get absolutely a great amount of and CORRECT knowledge. Dictionary, atlas, timelines and online updates are all good features.

I'm not a fun of BrainStormer, but that's fine.

As a simple database + search software, sometimes taking up ~60% CUP power on my laptop with a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is unbearable. The skin looks nice but I can't read the words on the tag. Searching is slow, not sure it's due to the graphic or the searching itself.

Oh, I'm using the mac version, it may work better with PC.

I could forgive many issues related to usability if, at its core, this was a great encyclopedia, but it is not. On the searches that I have done so far, the Britannica 2009 returned less useful material than my old Encarta 2003 which installed, loads, and generally just works better and faster than this product.

A couple of warnings:

First, I now notice (too late) that some other reviews seem to have been generated by professional 5-star plants that have provide nothing but rave reviews for everything with Britannica anywhere in the product description.

Second, I find that the software wrapper for this product employs a very simple embedded internet browser that does not seem to work on my new Vista computer. That precludes things like updates.

Finally, if you have any notion of ever calling tech support, you might just give it a try before actually purchasing this DVD. Don't worry about bothering anyone - there won't be an answer.

It's interesting...a few years ago, Encarta was king in terms of user interface, speed, and the atlas (content was/is pretty decent) while Britannica reigned supreme in terms of content, but the software was lousy. Britannica has since made great strides while Encarta seems to be slowing down (could this be the MS bloat-ware curse?). Encarta still wins on UI, but Britannica really is much improved - the UI is better, you can print whole articles, and the brainstormer feature is kind of interesting. But Britannica still needs work. It's hard to describe - it's just slow and twitchy at times - but not so much that it isn't useful. The atlas is still weak compared to Encarta, but that's not why we buy Britannica. Oh, and it runs well on Mac OS X. One final thought for Britannica - the online Britannica UI is actually slicker and slightly more intuitive than the software. Even so, a very good buy overall.

I purchased the Mavis Beacon(Version 17) to increase my typing speed. I don't bother using it much because I have to change the pixel size of my screen to make it small enough to fit. Then the appearance is a little too small for my liking. After my lesson, I have to change the pixel size back again. As a result, I don't bother using it much. Fortunately, I also purchased Typing Instructor Deluxe (Version 17) and I am very happy with it! It is easy to navigate, has very pleasant graffics, lots of variety and features, and loaded up perfectly (Win XP Home). Typing Instructor Deluxe has everything you need and is fun, too!

Great typing game especially if you love spongebob. My seven year old has learned quite a bit so far!

It is hard for an educational program to compete with the likes of Mario.

That said, my 12 year old likes this program and has been using it without groans. That is saying a good bit! He likes the SpongeBob TV show, but I was a bit concerned that this program would be too 'young' for him. For the price though, I thought I'd give it a try and pass it on to a younger niece if it didn't work out for us. That was a needless worry, because he took to it right off. It is challenging enough for the preteens and is basically the same 'style' of typing tutor as the adult programs. In fact, I think if I could not type, I'd use this one - I've watched a lot of it, and I think that if you like the cartoon, age doesn't matter. The games are a fun, but reinforcing, break from the drills. SpongeBob is a lot more encouraging than the program I used years ago! His funny comments are very positive.

Home-schoolers may be interested to know that at each level of accomplishment, a certificate is available to be printed. I like to have those to stick in my files - that is a nice feature. I had to make sure my son knew to look at the hands on the bottom of the screen, and show him how to use the little raised bumps on the F&J key to keep his proper position- that will help minimize the kids from looking down - then he was flying!

I bought SpongeBob Typing because my autistic eight-year-old son has severe graphomotor delays, and can't keep up with his classmates when writing in the classroom. So his teachers and I have incorporated the use of a school-provided laptop in his IEP for his class writing so he won't fall behind. But that means he needs to learn to type--a year or two earlier than his peers will. Just because he thinks it's fun, my six-year-old son is playing with the tutorial too, and learning to type. When they're ready, I'll let their little sisters join them.

This typing tutorial isn't perfect, but it addresses the needs of the student well. SpongeBob's presence and humor, and the memorable games keep my sons interested. We also bought another tutorial, Typing Instructor for Kids II, which had very high reviews, because I was concerned about this game after reading the one review above mine. And because I struggled to believe SpongeBob was compatible with education. But Typing Instructor is so desperately boring that neither of my sons could stay with it. I ran it myself to find out what their whining was about, because at first I thought my sons were just being difficult, but no, it really is awful. The characters are undynamic and so uninteresting, and the games were unengaging as well. Look for a used copy of Typing Instructor II from me for sell soon ;) .

You can't just pop in the CD and walk away, though, expecting your child to be able to type in a month. Some shortcomings of the game are that there's minimal initial direction; as a parent you must listen to the instructions, the lengthy instructions, to find where the lessons are so you can avoid the games section that your children are not ready for. Admittedly, I prefer to be a part of my child's learning anyway rather than let entertainment and someone else's education parent my children, but I was surprised at how much I was needed to help my sons get started. However, once they are started and familiar with the game layout, they do pretty well on their own. Both of my sons get excited to see their words-per-minute scores rise steadily. It's also easy to see, by a "map", where your children are in their progress.

It would be nice if SpongeBob had more variety to what he says -- there are a good number of different comments to add interest while the children are practicing home row, but every once in a while I would hear one of my sons sigh and tell SpongBob to shut up. My oldest has figured out that SpongeBob sympathetically says "Yeah, I used to make that mistake too." even if Andrew doesn't make any error. While that can be annoying, the boys still laugh uncontrollably every obnoxious time SpongeBob yells "Are you ready to rock the keyboard!" While I'm convinced I've heard it enough, my children can't get enough of it, and so are typing. I do need to check on them every once in a while to be sure they're still using good posture and position, but they're making progress.

I do recommend this tutorial, but encourage parents to at least be a part of the beginning of the lessons, if you can't be there more than that, to help guide your little keyboarder.

I think this product is great. It was easy to load. My son was typing, using the right keys, within two weeks. He really enjoyed it because he loves Spongebob. Any other software would have been boring for him.

This product was worth what I paid for it, all of my children enjoy the software. I would recommend it to any parent who wants thier child to learn how to type without them loosing interest.This product delivers, Not only are the games fun but they are learning while having fun and I think that is what we all want as parents, we want our children to enjoy learning and I feel that is what this product offers; Fun Learning.

Kaplan normally does a very good job with review materials. This one seems like it was hastily made and not updated very recently. It's still a good product, deserving of a good rating.
