I've heard bad things about Vista so wanted a copy of the XP on hand.

Someone mentioned that with XP the "blue screen of death" is no more. This is actually false. While the "blue screen of death" does not happen often, it does happen. Except it isn't just a matter of restarting the computer, as it just pops up again and again and again until you reformat your computer (and lose everything). Just a warning for anyone, but overall XP is a very well thought out product and has a great interface that's similar enough to old editions, but with a modern flair.

Beware my my friends of old (Xp Professional 2002 oem) copies of bogus software being sold on Amazon. By the likes of PBJWorld. Not only that, they let him lie and claim it was unopened. I purchased a copy and found it had a fake key. It was made by a key generator. They want me to return it to the guy who sold it to me. Mircosoft now has the case. Gave them what they needed to go forward. He want me to return it , to make it disappear, I would guess this to be so . By the way he refuses to deal with me. Shame on Amazon too, for letting this guy sell bogus software.
Buy for only those you know. Amazon will not back you UP! I for one will not ever shop on Amazon again. Burned by this. Never NEVER AGAIN . They lost me as a customer. Amazon make false statements that they care . They do not . I have not made false statements'. Pbjworld sold me a copy of Xp Professional that was not what they claimed . It had been opened, used and packaged with a fake key . Beware buyers of this site'. Trust only those you know and no site that gets 5 stars from most buyers . No one that perfect .

Thought I would get one of these XP discs from an Amazon merchant, since Microsoft no longer makes it available. My OEM disc somehow got scratched and I need to be able to re-install on my 1/2 MB laptop. Vista would never get by with that small of a memory footprint. "techdiscount" merchant sent if fast, good price $116.00 and it passes the MS authentication test, shrink-wrapped. I would buy from them again.

I am not too crazy with all the bells and whistles that come with Windows Vista. If you want a simple down to earth operating systems then go with Windows XP Professional. I just installed COD5 and it runs perfect with my new rig. Windows Vista uses a lot of memory compared to Windows XP.
Windows Vista requires 1GB, Windows XP Professional only requires 512mb.
Is up to you, you make the choice. I am using a Q6600 processor, with 2 EVGA 9800GTX in SLI mode. 4gb of Corsair Dominator Memory, EVGA 750i SLI FTW motherboard.

I spent about 3 months fighting with the Vista that was pre-installed on my laptop until I finally broke down and decided to downgrade to XP. It took me about a day to get my laptop operating to my satisfaction but I have to say it was WELL WORTH IT. Within 24 hours, I had VERY VISIBLE IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE that came from downgrading from Vista to XP. If you own Vista and are struggling with it like I was, I highly recommend "downgrading". If your results are anything like mine, you will find this to be more of an upgrade than anything.

The installation went well, and Windows XP has performed as expected. I perform nearly all tasks on my MacBook with the Mac Leopard OS. I only use Windows XP to accomplish a few Windows-specific tasks. Windows XP is used as an operating system of last resort on this computer.

The Vista parental controls have a lot to be desired. Here are the parts that do work. You can set the time that the child can use the computer. The high level settings works. Accept for websites that most people agree are for children, the rest of the internet is blocked. And overriding a website to be allowed does work. The only problem is that you can't set it to allow a website for a single logon sesson. The only options are "always allow" or "always disallow". Adding new websites to the Allow list is controlled through an interface or an XML file.

For any child above the age of 9 (needs to start doing research on the computer for school), don't count on the medium setting. The rating star image on Amazon, and the ability to see this product's page is blocked, but I could very easily see a picture of Male private parts -- a picture that would that be allowed to be sold to a child under 18 if it was in a magazine. I would type in a word in simple.[...] and it would block the page, but when I typed in the same word in en.[...] or common[...] , the images were displayed. If a page on simple.[...] had "Sexual reproduction" the page was blocked, but when that category was removed and it only had "Male reproduction" and "Female reproduction" the page was not blocked. I did these tests both using both the medium setting (standard) and the custom with "Sex education" set to blocked.

Something is working the way it is supposed to be working, because I have been able to block sex education pages on simple.[...] , but still be able to see pages like elephant. The main problem is that there is no way to see the filters, and there is no way to add words to the filter. [...] websites can be imported and exported, but not the filter. Nor is there any interface to the filter list.

Overall, don't count on the Parental controls. Consider either buying a third part filtering program and subscribing to an online encyclopedia program.

This software treats the user like they're in grade school and once even told me I didn't have permission to uninstall software that I'd installed on it, even though there's only one account on the computer - the admin account - and I was using it. It asks you 2-3 times if you're really sure you want to do something even as simple as throwing away a text file and hides all the features and areas that advanced computer users like to have access to. While Microsoft's done a good job of dumbing things down so that even the most inexperienced user can do things like alter their startup programs, it's gone too far. I cannot stress how irritating this software is, particularly when compared to its predecessors.

Don't waste your time with this OS. If you have it installed as a default OS, I'd strongly encourage you to reformat the drive with XP. Much better, less idiotic system by far.

This `upgrade' will not install on a `clean' hard drive, nor will it `upgrade' XP Pro. There is a work around, but it involves duplicate installs and other technical `workarounds' so if you are not technically savvy, don't get this `upgrade'.

If you do want to consider this `upgrade' be aware that Windows Vista Home Premium does not include FAX capability and needs the Office 2007 suite along with Outlook 2007 (which does not support animated gif's, among other things) for most eMail.

I would not consider Windows Vista Home Premium an `upgrade' as it requires more system memory, is a step backward in features, and more cumbersome to use than XP.

I am an attorney practicing in Silicon Valley. From a user's perspective, Windows Vista is a step backward from Windows 98. Remember all those freezes and crashes we use to have in Windows 98, a problem that got much better with 2000 and XP? Well, they're back... Here are some of the problems Vista has caused on my machine and I'm not the only one who has seen these....

(1) Printers deinstall themselves after sleep mode.
(2) Send via email from MS office programs does not work and causes a system hang (need to kill open routines with task manager).
(3) IE freezes frequently (>40% of the time).
(4) Microsoft websites express puzzlement at these things (aka, complete lack of adequate testing before release).
(5) I have much faster hardware, with much greater processing capacity, but the system runs much slower (again, a Vista issue).

The worst thing about this is the insulting nature of Microsoft's attempt to force everyone onto Vista (aka, new revenues for a worthless, completely unreliable product). After about the past 30 years on MS operating systems, I've decided that my next purchases will be exclusively MAC based.

I cannot fathom a product being this far of a step backward, and the only conclusion I can reach is that the design teams and management driven by Vista are and were completely inept.

Save your time, do not purchase anything associated with MS Vista.

I've used OEM XP to successfully replace Vista on several computers, both laptop and desktop, brand names Dell, Toshiba and HP. Why? I have multiple legacy devices and software in my office: printers, scanners, hardware and software repair tools, disk burners, network attached storage and so on, none of which have Vista drivers released by their manufacturers. I also find websites such as Webex being unreliable under Vista IE7. It's cheaper for me to replace Vista with XP than it is to replace all existing hardware and software.

Using this OEM disk does provide a reliable installation of the basic XP operating system. But on those computers which come from the manufacturer with Vista installed you will be missing the XP compatible drivers for various internal subsystems such as sound card, modem, network cards, USB hub and so on. Sometimes, but not always, the computer OEM website support page will provide downloads of the drivers you need. You will have a better chance of finding the XP drivers if the manufacturer provided the computer model in question preloaded with your choice of either XP or Vista OS. If necessary, call the manufacturer to find out if they provide drivers for an XP version of your computer. I found that the initial installation of XP on a previously Vista computer left several subsystems inoperative, but going into the Control Panel>System>Device Manager to delete the non-functional subsystems, followed by reinstalling them using the Add Hardware function and allowing the system to go online to find drivers was successful. I may have been very lucky. Note, if the nonfunctional subsystem breaks your internet connection, you are out of luck!!

If the problems and solutions I've described are mysterious to you, DO NOT buy this product. And the full price version won't be any better for you.

This OEM version of XP is cheaper only because you give up the right to call Microsoft for support. Otherwise, this is exactly the same software as you find in the full price version. The full price version WILL NOT have any more XP drivers for your subsystems than does the OEM version. If you are a system builder, you will have received XP drivers with each of the subsystem devices.

You can, as I did, take a chance and install XP on computers that were originally Vista driven. I was lucky in being able to find XP drivers for each of the devices in my computers, after the conversion. When and if I do this again, I will try to secure the XP drivers BEFORE I blow away the Vista.

Make sure you have a Vista install disk for your specific computer BEFORE you remove Vista, in case you are unable to make the XP work.

Having to reinstall Windows can be a bear, especially when you need to spend all day installing updates and service packs. This one, with service pack 3 shorts that job down to about an hour and a half total. The drivers are adequate and only required a few updates on specific peripherals.

I had a hard time finding a place that still sells XP. I was not impressed with Vista at all, having purchased Home Premium for one of my machines. And when time came to upgrade another machine in my home network from the old old old Win2K it was running, I decided to go XP instead. I'm very happy Amazon still carries it!

My solution to it was to purchase the Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade disk and use that product code. It worked out great and my Windows was then activated by micosoft. It's as sad thing that Micosoft is so greedy and causes such problems.

Generally speaking, to get the best performance from any operating system a clean install of a full version is recommended. The best choice is to choose a full version of the product and enjoy the benefits of not being left with artifacts and leftover's of your previous operating system which can lead to instability in certain cases. $A friend of mine donated a computer to a charity. It was a system with a fractured Windows 98 system on it. I decided to upgrade it to XP, so I bought this product. The documentation leads you to believe that you can do a clean install of XP even if there is no OS on the system. You can't. The second best option is to do an install of XP over an existing OS, using the existing OS to boot up, but then using this CD to remove the old OS and install a fresh XP installation. You can't. What I had to do was do a clean install of Windows 98 (luckily I have the CDs and the knowledge to do this) and then upgrade it using the XP CD. So if you are looking for a clean installation of XP, this is not the product for you. However, if you know how to do a clean install of Windows 98, then this system will work for you.$ 3stars - "Upgrade to an existing OS only." (D. Flak)

I used this to upgrade from Me. Follow the directions, and UNLESS YOU GET AN ERROR MESSAGE TELLING YOU THAT YOU CANNOT PROCEED, JUST LET IT RUN IT'S COURSE. FOR ME IT TOOK ABOUT 48 HOURS. After installation, you may get a two tone blue screen saying that it needs to check disks, if so, let it; this also took a long time (but was part of the 48 hours). A few days after installation, install XP Service Pack 3, to cover additional vulnerabilities. You may occasionally get that blue screen upon start up; if so, you can just hit the space bar within the 9 seconds to skip that disk check. Maybe sometime you don't actually need to use your computer you can start it up and let it do the disk check. Good luck. P.S. If during installation attempts you keep getting an error message that does not let you proceed, there are solutions posted on the net (just search the exact phrase), but I'm not sure any of those work. Hopefully, at least one time it will let the procees continue into the SLOW but eventually successful phase.

I received the software program Windows Vista Ultmate quickly. It installed just fine. The problem came later. I was asked by Microsoft to register the product with the Product key that came with the package. I tryed three times and each time was told the Product Key was invalled. I have sent three enquires to the party I purchased it from with no reply. I guess I just gave away my money. Any way I hope this keeps some one else from making the same mistake. Don't order from this party.

After reading many of the reviews I realised that most people should not own a computer. If you go back to the late 90's you will read the same kind of tripe about Win2000 and XP! Not to say that these OS's were perfect upon release, to be sure they were not. However I use to be in the PC and networking biz and I can tell you most people who had problems with these OS's had hardware issues like bad Ram and Flaky chipsets they also ran flaky software some of it hacked. Also viruses and other problems were usually evident. I see the same thing going on now with Vista. I took part in the Beta testing and even the Beta was way stable in comparison with XP or Win2000. I have been running Vista from the day it became available and I have never experienced an OS crash! I do a lot of intensive graphics, gaming, transcoding and conversion, web editing, video and sound editing, also E-house applications. So my machine gets a work out. I have found that doing your homework (researching hardware) before building a machine is a necessity. Also avoiding questionable software and good security practices are all very importent in maintaining a stable operating environment. Much has been made of VISTA's supposed incompatibility. LIES! VISTA32 is compatible with just about everything that XP is compatible with. The exception are programs with kernal mode drivers. IT was wise of microsoft to prevent the loading of those sorts of drivers and thers no reason for software companies to have that kind od access to your OS. Now VISTA64 is another can of beans. That is very stable also but there are hardware compatibiltiy issues there but thats actually the fault of hardware manufactures being slow or reluctant to write 64 bit drivers. All and all VISTA has been the OS I have been waiting for since the 80's. You cant go wrong with VISTA so long as you have good hardware and know about best practises with software and security.

* To this better security... It's either on or off... Meaning that if you disable UAC your computer realistically has no security
* The OS is unstable
* Many of the features that Vista contains are from other OS's just 'dimmed-down' making them worthless
* Too many resource requirements
* Techs like me generally hate this Windows version because everything is 'thrown at you' and to do the simplest of things you have to take the 'incompetent' path... For example for me to just get to my network connections area I have to go through about five windows

I purchased this version of Windows so that I could make full use of the 8GB of memory I installed. I am using it on a new computer I built myself, using a quad core processor and the amount of memory shown above, so e although there is a significant increase in performance I am not sure if it is hardware or software-related. At any rate, the 64-Bit version works as advertised, and I would recommend it to anyone who had 4GB or more memory in their computers.

I got this version and found out Vista upgrade will not install on a formatted hard drive. It looks for a previous version of windows or it will not install so, you have to have a windows version there first then, you can choose to upgrade from the previous version to Vista or, do a clean fresh install of Vista. Not worth the hassel when building a new system unless you happen to have an old image to access and ghost it.

My XP HP battleship finally could sail no more.. never gave Vista any thought actually..a few days ago the inevitable happened... plus the usb ports were becoming sloppy, white screen, but when it was good it was very good.. cut to the chase... From what i gather, buying Vista is a pant load different then purchasing a new computer. I am still amazed... my old XP would recycle sometimes, didn't like rollup 3, never thought I could use my extra's lke printer with Vista/new machine, the thing feches a program and my old close and play printer (all in one) is like new in doing its thing, same with "fixing" other programs, it just about apologizes for the trouble.. I don't know if the powers to be will post this but a new machine and Vista is a smooth experience... most of the reviews that I have read concerning upgrading an XP when i was thinking about bringing my old machine to the doctor seem like its a pain so I just bit the bullet and purchased an HP a6650f for not much over $700.00.. QUAD CORE AMD phenom.. I have read reviews that even with a new machine the reviewer would rather have XP... I don't know what to make of it, maybe its because my HP was ancient at 4 years old, one bummer is that I have read the Roxio's PhotoSuite 8 won't work with Vista snd they have not provided a fix.. You can put lipstick on an XP machine but its still an XP machine. Some have said its slowed down by bloated extra's.. its not very difficult to delete the stuff, geesh. Vista is smooth, if you are one of the lucky ones who can experience what I have with a new Vista program, I wouldn't say it is like going from a Hundyie to Porche, but its more like going from a Buick to a Cadillac, 5 stars witha new machine

Since so many of my clients have PC's that come with Vista, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and learn more about it.

I have a fairly powerful PC and decided to go against everything people had recommended and to upgrade over XP rather than do a clean install. I had my XP drive ghosted and figured the worst that would happen is I'd have to go back and try again.

The upgrade was as smooth as silk. When it was complete, I had to download new video drivers from Nvidia, but they installed properly the first time and I've had no problems with them.

So far, none of my applications or games has complained about Vista. I'm mainly running Adobe CS3 and Office 2007. A few games have had minor issues, but I've been able to tweak them and get things working.

For someone like me who does a lot of file copying and manipulation, the new Explorer is 1,000 times better than the old ones. There is much less confusion when copying files as to what will happen when the same files already exist, and it is much easier to view photos, view audio files, etc.

I really like the Aero interface. It looks slick and it's easy to move between Windows.

In short, while Vista may just be "warmed over XP" under the hood, I've been pleasantly surprised.

Great product as always. Good value for money. The only negative is the blue background option has been removed, but if you're happy working with a white screen, this won't bother you. Otherwise, a worthwhile upgrade.

A lot of people have said "I don't know what's the difference between this and the full (retail) version." Allow me:

1- This is about half the $$.

2- If you get the full (more expensive version) and the PC (or its motherboard) dies, or you just want to replace (upgrade) it, you can move the (expensive) copy of XP to the new machine. You are NOT allowed to do that with this cheaper copy. It is "tied" to one PC (or one motherboard, depending).

3- This is XP Home. Compared to XP Pro, Home doesn't have the Encryption File System, Group Policies, Remote Desktop (server), Dynamic Disk support, Disk Manager, IIS (bad web server), Active Directory, Domain Login, Roaming Profiles, and only supports simplified (network) file security and not ACLs. The idea is that these are all things "corporate" users want and "Home" users don't need. The fact that you don't know what they are rather proves the point, doesn't it?

4- If you're using this in a "virtual" situation (like VMWare, or maybe in a Window on a Mac, but probably not with Boot Camp), the software may not be able to tell it's been moved, so item #2 may not apply to your situation. But I *think* it would be outside the terms of your license. But, really, who can tell? The "license agreement" is longer than a Russian novel, and mostly gibberish.

At least the Vista "agreement" (like you're actually agreeing to anything) says clearly that if you replace the motherboard, you have to buy another copy. Yes, it does.

I bought this because I wanted to run some Windows only software on my iMac without spending the full amount for Windows XP Professional or Vista and I don't see what's worse about this "OLD VERSION" because it still has Service Pack 2. So far, this version seems able to do what I need it to do.
Attention Mac users, if you buy and install a copy of Windows, be sure to also install the drivers on the Mac OS X install disc. Without them, you'll have trouble with Wi-Fi and Windows Movie Maker, among other things. Also keep in mind that while you can have a Windows partition larger than 32GB by NFTS partions, you'll need to use FAT32 if you want to write to the windows partition from the Mac partition. I have FAT32 so I can transfer photos and videos that need to be edited without having to put them on to DVD's first.
About the Bootcamp instruction guide, if you're sure you know what you're doing, then don't worry about printing it. If you don't know a lot about computers, then I'd recommend that you use it. The Windows software can only be installed a few times (I believe it's four, but don't count on this) before it will no longer accept the product key, forcing you to have to buy another copy so you'll want to try to make sure that you install it properly on the first time.

I bought the ASUS Eee PC 901 8.9-Inch Netbook (1 GB RAM, 20 GB Solid State Drive, Linux and dealing with Linux on this machine is a nightmare. So, I broke down and decided to XP it. Far better than the mess that was on there.

If you have the Linux version, the only plus is that you have more drive space. Wipe it out, and this is the XP disc you need. It is in fact the full version, and there is nothing different about it except it comes in a sleeve.

Do not throw out the plastic wrap! The sticker for registration is stupidly on the wrap.

The Asus instructions are basic, and their support is useless, but you should be able to follow the directions to installation on your own. But use the forums if you need help.

This comes with SP2, and that's the highest you should go on disc. I was able to upgrade to SP3 with no problem with windows update.

I'm now waiting to get a better PC before I can really try this out, but I'm already disappointed!

I was dissappointed that the version I purchased is for a 32 bit machine and I have a 64 bit computer. I will have to get a 64 bit version but I have not had the time so far. I will send more if I ever get it up and running.

I have never been so frustrated over an operating system. If Vista was my first experience with a computer then I would never have developed an interest in the technology. I can't even down grade to XP. Getting Vista wasn't my idea. It came pre-installed with my new computer so now I have to re-install my old harddrive in order to have XP. Vista causes PhotoShop's tools not to work. No matter which tool I click it remains with the "grabby hand" which does nothing. I can't even copy or paste in the application. Can this just be a coincidence? I've never had that problem with XP. Vista is so slow! Where's this major updated OS promised to us? How do these people stay in business?

I have no desire to be an operating system guru. I want to boot my computer, read email, surf the web, use a few applications. Instead, I spend all my time waiting on the whim of Vista. It updates when it wants; it reboots when it wants; it slows down *my* needs on the computer to jam up CPU usage. Every time it does an automatic "update" to drivers, I have to completely reinstall my printers. This is a piece of junk, created by computer junkies with nothing better to do than complicate the lives of the average user. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Use XP...or better yet, buy an Apple; its operating system doesn't want to be dictator of your (virtual) universe...

I was a little nervous to attempt an upgrade from Windows 98 to XP because of some of the problems I've read that individuals had doing so. When I began the upgrade, there was a option to select that would test your PC to see if it was upgradeable and it told me that mine was not. However, when I restarted my PC with the upgrade DISC already installed, the upgrade began it's process. There's an option to print out instructions during the installation, I suggest that one do this so that you can have a paper copy of what to do next. Once I picked the correct options, the upgrade proceded without a hitch. Make sure you have at least 128MB of RAM and free hardrive memory space before you begin. The XP installation was a success and now it's like I have a new PC. I love it.

Generally speaking, to get the best performance from any operating system a clean install of a full version is recommended. The best choice is to choose a full version of the product and enjoy the benefits of not being left with artifacts and leftover's of your previous operating system which can lead to instability in certain cases. I would only buy this on a limited budget.

I work for a small business, and have need of 6 pc's logging onto my computer. We have Windows XP Home edition currently, but Home edition would only allow 5 pc's at a time to log on to my pc. We purchased the upgrade from Amazon.com, and shortly recieved the package. I backed up our data, just in case something went wrong. In the middle of the installation, the setup program was unable to read one of the files on the disc, and caused an error that could not be averted. It would not let me move forward in the installation, nor would it let me return to Windows Home edition. So, in short, I'm stuck until I get another disc in here. The company I purchased it from was very un-helpful (Tech for less) in helping me to find a replacement disc. This setback caused us many problems for us for about 3 weeks, which is an eternity for a small business.
I don't know how functional this upgrade is, as I never got it installed, but I highly recommend that if you purchase this upgrade, you have a spare readily available or at least a back-up plan in case it fails.

At the same time that Microsoft is discontinuing sales for Windows XP, they continue to charge $199 to upgrade XP Home to XP Pro. There is not much additional functionality provided except for the networking support required to allow a computer to join a Domain. Hence companies of any size that require this must pay an artifically-inflated price because they have no option. It is also somewhat buggy in that the upgrade can disable some functions as documented by Microsoft Knowledgebase entries.
