Recently I had the opportunity to try Freespire. Just to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything, I went ahead and installed it to the hard drive of a Lenovo Y410 where the Windows OS had gone south.

As to the good points:

Installation was a breeze. Put the disk in and tell it to install. Took about 20 minutes total, give or take.

Slick interface. Really nice main page with bright colors and a minimum of fussiness. Very close to a Windows interface. Fact is, it's the Ubuntu Linux desktop with some enhancements. Ubuntu is a great OS if you haven't used it before.

Prefer the KDE desktop over the Gnome? Tough. You get what they load which is great for the uninitiated but not so great if you prefer a choice. This is both good and bad. If you have no experience with Linux then you go for the Windows-like Gnome interface; however, most newbies don't know this.

It detected my USB printer and camera and downloaded drivers for both. Windows never did this right.

It quickly found wireless hotspots, and it even detected my Ethernet connection without hesitating.

Instead of a gaggle of included apps, it offers something called CNR (Click And Run) which is an online website via Freespire where you can check out apps before downloading them. No only do you get in-depth descriptions of the apps but you also get customer reviews.

It's quicker than Windows once booted but is no quicker than Windows to boot. This is common among Linux systems. All operating systems do a system check upon booting so get used to it.

Mainly all of the apps, like OpenOffice are merely free clones of equivalent Windows based programs. This is good because one interfaces with the other without too many problems. You even get a free clone of Adobe Acrobat which costs close to $400 for Windows.

Virus problems? What virus problems? Very few are written for Linux so that worry is not something you have to fret over.

Freespire is based upon the Ubuntu release which means you get a steady OS and periodic free updates.

Now for the bad:

I got my distro from a Linux magazine that includes disks, but if you want to buy a disk it will set you back some bucks. Fact is, you can contact Ubuntu and they'll send you a disk for free or you can go to the Freespire website and they'll allow you to download the distro for free but you'll have to burn an ISO disk to run it. Amazon's price is not bad at all.

The Firefox browser included is dreadfully slow because the DNS check has been enabled (supposed to offer greater security against phishing and bad websites, but it's awfully poky). I had to do a quick Net check to find out how to disable the DNS (enter about:config in the URL area and scroll down and disable DNS). This is common to all new Linux distros that use Firefox and is not indicative of a Freespire problem.

Typical of Linux, there is still no standard for sound cards. The Linux Standard Architecture would not recognize my Soundblaster card and I had a devil of time getting it to work. I finally installed a USB sound device which it recognized right off the mark, but this required I use headphones. My onboard speaker system never worked. I had the same problems with Mandriva and Suse.

Unless you download a special app, you can forget playing DVDs. Due to copyright constraints it ain't happening anytime soon. Secondary apps do exist to play DVDs but there is no guarantee that they will work with Suse completely. Once I did get the DVD to work the playback was horribly choppy and erratic.

Although the CNR system is slick and rather nice, it does have its drawbacks. The parent company is on shaky financial ground and some of the apps on the CNR website are woefully out of date or, worse yet, placed in the wrong categories. I found an educational app in the games section where it most definitely didn't belong. In addition, the version of OpenOffice at the CNR is an older version than the one you get on the disk. Ditto for the Linux Instant Messenger called Pidgin. It was originally called GAIM but the name was changed because of AIM complaints. If you download GAIM it won't work but if you download Pidgin it will. They are the same program, though.

While it may seem the bad points outweigh the good, it's a matter of perspective. Linux always has had some bug issues but so does Windows or Apple OS. Linux suffers because it's an free OS (most can be downloaded for free but they do charge to mail you disks) and the Big Boys don't like the Free Guy knocking on their doors.

Fact is, Freespire is a slick OS that merits mention and is third behind my choices of Mandriva and Suse (one and two, respectively).

The is a great software it has the look of windows and security of linux but lilk any linux you can use this as a server i took one of my old pc's that needed new hard drives well i found out it had EIDE drived so i got a new MOBO and 4 750 drives giveing me 3T Then put linspire on snd i have new server on my home network one nice thing about cnr witch stands for click and run is it gives me acces to all sorts of software the best feature of linux to me is that both a windows or mac cac access it since i have them both but that is somthing that can be done with all linux OS.

A lot of people have complained about various features that Linspire offers. The most common being the use of the CNR client. What these people seem to not understand or in their bias against Linspire just plain omit is that there are two versions of the CNR membership.

CNR Basic and CNR Gold.

The second review on here "Why are you paying for free software??" fails to mention the reason this is a pay service. Yes you could use apt-get to install debian packages but CNR goes through the trouble of making sure each package has no dependency issues. While most current users of Linux don't mind a little trouble shooting must users of computers want something that just works.

At the time his review was written Basic was $20a year. It is now free, it is better than apt get in the sense that it is graphical, as in no command line a scary land similar to dos prompt for all the newbies and converts.

CNR offers an aisle system so all the programs you want can be organized and set to install with a single click instead of manually doing each one.

Best of all that so called horrible cost of $50 for CNR Gold well it isn't that bad at all. For one thing you get an unlimitted number of aisles. Two you get discounts on every click and buy program, because like it or not even in debian not every program is free. Believe me, I know. In just the last 4 months my CNR Gold membership has given me over a $80 savings subtract that 50 and I still saved 30. Think of your membership like one for Costco or Sams Club.

It just drives me crazy when people bash this service, it is a time saver and a headache saver. And I am not just some newbie. I have been using Linux for over 5 years now. I started with Redhat 8, I own a copy of Suse 10 and I have been with Linspire ever since they launched Linspire 4.5.

This book is fairly easy to use but it does get somewhat complicated at times, especially if you have never used Linux before. It does look somewhat like windows though and for that I am thankful or I believe I would be totally lost!

I first tried Linspire 5-O when there was a free promotional offer for it. Running it live seemed good, so I decided to install it on a brand new hard disk. Big mistake. After using it for about an hour, I found OpenOffice to be very lacking, as the version it was distributed with was FAR behind the latest. The only way that upgrading it to the latest version that was mentioned was by signing up to their Click N' Run program, which costs money. I had sound problems as well. It messed up the master boot record so I can no longer boot into windows, which I needed in order to do work (using the LATEST OpenOffice). This took a couple of months for me to fix using tutorials (and I have been using computers for over a decade now) and attempts to get support. Now, using Ubuntu (which is completely free), I have had none of these problems and everything is working perfectly. If you want a good Linux distribution that will not cause you headaches, I reccomend not using Linspire, and one of the more mature distributions instead.

Quick Summary:
Linspire is a linux based OS that provides an easy means of converting from a Windows platform. Installing and getting application software is made easy through a database named CNR (Click-N-Run) and installing those programs is streamlined. It is great for people unfamiliar with Linux but may not be the best distro for people looking to become knowledgable in Linux. There are other Linux OS's that are free of charge, more open (less restraints) and have a number of forums for support. Linspire charges you for software that may be free! outside of Linspire's Click-N-Pay system. Linspire comments out or limits package repositories - which is essentially trying to make you use their way of doing things - and make an educated decision before purchase. If you want the easiest possible transition from Windows to Linux and don't mind the restraints - go Linspire.

PRO's:
If you're a beginner to Linux - don't know much about Operating Systems - and don't plan on learning a whole lot about them - then Linspire is probably your best choice. It offers the stability and security of a Linux system with the familiar Windows atmosphere. Install is easy and getting around will be as well. You can find a lot of software in their Click-N-Run database and program install is painless. If your familiar with Linux or OS's - or you are willing to learn and you will work around the restraints in Linspire - then go for it! BUT...

CON's:
If you want to learn Linux, tweak the system and enjoy the freedom that is open source OS - then you should check out Ubuntu or SUSE. Both of those are free for download and install (SUSE will even mail you an install CD!). Linspire charges ~$50 for their OS and they keep on charging for all kinds of things. The aformentioned CNR (Click-N-Run) has a lot of the programs which you pay for that are free otherwise! So you pay for a Linux OS (rather than use a free one) then you pay to install programs (rather than download and install the free one yourself). The aim here, other than funding, is to provide people with the easiest means of Linux. The downfall is that you are restrained and seem to pay for things that you could get for free. Slip a DVD into the drive and if you don't have Linspire's commercial DVD player installed - a window opens up and informs you that you'll have to pay Linspire to play DVDs. You'll also notice that every time you put in an application program CD, you get a similar pop-up from Linspire reminding you that you could be paying them money instead of doing things your own way.

I realize the world runs off currency, but I also realize that there's an alternate means to a more stable OS than Windows without a Click-N-Pay backbone. Go Linux! Less intrusive, more stable and secure, more freedom! Choose your distro!

There are some important limitations like customer data enty and restoring from back-up is a nightmare. Although they offer tech support, it is very expensive and the so called tecnicians are easily frustrated so you essentally are wasting your money!

I used this to create estimates, then it lets you transfer that estimate right to an invoice. Very user friendly, It keeps track of all the invoices for future use, so you can see what the customer paid on a yearly basis, no need to upgrade very useful for small businesses or handyman type businesses.

The installation is tedious and non-obvious. Moreover there is no succinct description in the documentation as to how to migrate files from version 2001. The default installation script for Windows XP did not function without some modification. And Norton Personal firewall must be turned off, while down loading all the patches and up-dates of which there are many. The only reason to buy this product is because Intuit's 2001 version will not function with contemporary versions of Internet Explorer, therefore if you use a current version of Explorer, and are doing a re-install of the product, you are forced into the up-grade, which for my business, offers no, as not any, value added, features.

I have been using Quickbooks for almost 7 years. I bought my first copy in 1996. Every two years or so I upgrade. Now I have the 2003 edition and the same quality I have come to expect from Q books was right there.This is a very intuitive piece of software and I was not disappointed.Any gripes that are not about the software but about the Intuit corporation are inappropriate and detract from such an innovative piece of code.

I do the books for a small business using Quickbooks Pro 2003 and I love it. The program is logical and elegant. In most cases I'm only limited by what I don't know or have forgotten about the program. My only knock is that I would appreciate a broader search feature, but I am not unduly troubled by the minor limitations it has now. I find everything I need with relative ease.

Please start with a different accounting software. Intuit locks you into their expensive payroll updates that you could input yourself if they would let you. Manually typing in the government info for payroll checks every payroll doesn't sound like good computing.... but $169 a year sounds like "GOOD PROFIT." I like the program... but extremely dislike the management. Moving to another program.Unhappy

There are some people that would rather save money than anything else. My friend John would love this software so I plan to send it to him. He doesn't want to spend money so bad he would endure something like this software. I tried it just to see if it could offer any competition to the overpriced Microsoft Office Suites. It can't begin to challenge MS Office or Corel WordPerfect Office. The reasons are as follows:

1. The applications are not user friendly.
2. It functions far slower than office.
3. If you try to import or export to your friends with MS or Corel apps you will have major problems with the formats.
4. It can't handle large documents, your system will slow to a crawl or lock up.

Everything works great with staroffice and openoffice software. Opening and saving MS documents is a breeze as long there are not VB/VB script controls associated with them (most of my documents don't). I have this installed on Redhat linux 9.0 and Win98. I am glad that they got rid of Staroffice desktop manager. For a product at this price the features are great but I will continue to spend more money on MS products for the following reasons.1. Whenever I saved a document, our ceiling fan at home stopped.2. Whenever I opened a document, the coffee machine at work broke.3. I want to donate more money to MS camp.

This program is easy to install, easy to use and is backed up by a great support staff at Sun. I was able to adapt my PowerPoint and Excel programs seamlessly into StarOffice 6.0. The book that comes with the software is very well written to get you off to a fast start. The software can be used as a single user or for an office staff where each logs onto a server. The StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite Companion text book (by Haugland & Jones) can be purchased together, with the Suite, to round out your office for less than $100! A great buy.

This software provides a nifty and practical way to customize your own personal checks, rather than purchase pre-printed or bank checks. I went to an office supply store to purchase the actual black check supply, for around twenty-two bucks for 750 checks, and printed out my own quickly and simply using Windows 98 and an inkjet printer. Someone else who uses the same software gave me the idea of printing my photo on the checks as a customizing idea, as she did herself. Nice idea, I think, or perhaps a nice background, using a favorite photo. I ran into one stumbling block when attempting to enter my bank account information in the step-by-step on-screen process; I had NO old checks from my account, and the setup requires that you enter the little hyphenated number which is found near the center of your checks. Upon contacting my financial institution for this number, I was disappointed to find that a representative there was unwilling to give me that simple, non-confidential information. It just so happened that while insisting to her that I needed it for printing my new personalized checks (as she insisted I only need the routing # and account #), I happened to see that it was printed on my deposit slips, which I still had left. In other words, if for some reason you too have no checks available, simply check a deposit slip from your account if you have one, and all the information will be there.

This is a really great product for people who are tired of spending high dollars on bank checks. I've been using these checks and this software for years. The steps for entering your bank data in order for it to print on your check is very simple. You can print checks to carry around with you so that they can be handwritten in stores, etc. and you can print check amounts and vendor names with your various computer programs, i.e. Quick Books, Quicken, etc. You can put clip art on your checks, maybe a Christmas Tree at Christmas and so on. I get a lot of compliments from store merchants when using these checks, but my main objective for using them is the BIG SAVINGS !!!
