It is great set of ubuntu and kubuntu and the library is top notch. I was ubuntu user but since last release, thanks to this set I decided to try kubuntu and liked it. I use ubuntu/kubuntu for two years and those are by far my most loved Linux distros. It is very convenient having it delivered. The shipment from DVDxDVD is super quick (I mean it is unbelievable how fast they do!) and their customer service is superb. I bought from them different releases for many times and they really take care. I pre-ordered this one. This set comes with complete training library for all levels of users! I'm greatly impressed with the library. It saves tons of money as allows go deep into Linux on practically any subject. Here's smooth installation and hour of fun! Awesome! Recently I had the opportunity to try Freespire. Just to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything, I went ahead and installed it to the hard drive of a Lenovo Y410 where the Windows OS had gone south.

As to the good points:

Installation was a breeze. Put the disk in and tell it to install. Took about 20 minutes total, give or take.

Slick interface. Really nice main page with bright colors and a minimum of fussiness. Very close to a Windows interface. Fact is, it's the Ubuntu Linux desktop with some enhancements. Ubuntu is a great OS if you haven't used it before.

Prefer the KDE desktop over the Gnome? Tough. You get what they load which is great for the uninitiated but not so great if you prefer a choice. This is both good and bad. If you have no experience with Linux then you go for the Windows-like Gnome interface; however, most newbies don't know this.

It detected my USB printer and camera and downloaded drivers for both. Windows never did this right.

It quickly found wireless hotspots, and it even detected my Ethernet connection without hesitating.

Instead of a gaggle of included apps, it offers something called CNR (Click And Run) which is an online website via Freespire where you can check out apps before downloading them. No only do you get in-depth descriptions of the apps but you also get customer reviews.

It's quicker than Windows once booted but is no quicker than Windows to boot. This is common among Linux systems. All operating systems do a system check upon booting so get used to it.

Mainly all of the apps, like OpenOffice are merely free clones of equivalent Windows based programs. This is good because one interfaces with the other without too many problems. You even get a free clone of Adobe Acrobat which costs close to $400 for Windows.

Virus problems? What virus problems? Very few are written for Linux so that worry is not something you have to fret over.

Freespire is based upon the Ubuntu release which means you get a steady OS and periodic free updates.

Now for the bad:

I got my distro from a Linux magazine that includes disks, but if you want to buy a disk it will set you back some bucks. Fact is, you can contact Ubuntu and they'll send you a disk for free or you can go to the Freespire website and they'll allow you to download the distro for free but you'll have to burn an ISO disk to run it. Amazon's price is not bad at all.

The Firefox browser included is dreadfully slow because the DNS check has been enabled (supposed to offer greater security against phishing and bad websites, but it's awfully poky). I had to do a quick Net check to find out how to disable the DNS (enter about:config in the URL area and scroll down and disable DNS). This is common to all new Linux distros that use Firefox and is not indicative of a Freespire problem.

Typical of Linux, there is still no standard for sound cards. The Linux Standard Architecture would not recognize my Soundblaster card and I had a devil of time getting it to work. I finally installed a USB sound device which it recognized right off the mark, but this required I use headphones. My onboard speaker system never worked. I had the same problems with Mandriva and Suse.

Unless you download a special app, you can forget playing DVDs. Due to copyright constraints it ain't happening anytime soon. Secondary apps do exist to play DVDs but there is no guarantee that they will work with Suse completely. Once I did get the DVD to work the playback was horribly choppy and erratic.

Although the CNR system is slick and rather nice, it does have its drawbacks. The parent company is on shaky financial ground and some of the apps on the CNR website are woefully out of date or, worse yet, placed in the wrong categories. I found an educational app in the games section where it most definitely didn't belong. In addition, the version of OpenOffice at the CNR is an older version than the one you get on the disk. Ditto for the Linux Instant Messenger called Pidgin. It was originally called GAIM but the name was changed because of AIM complaints. If you download GAIM it won't work but if you download Pidgin it will. They are the same program, though.

While it may seem the bad points outweigh the good, it's a matter of perspective. Linux always has had some bug issues but so does Windows or Apple OS. Linux suffers because it's an free OS (most can be downloaded for free but they do charge to mail you disks) and the Big Boys don't like the Free Guy knocking on their doors.

Fact is, Freespire is a slick OS that merits mention and is third behind my choices of Mandriva and Suse (one and two, respectively).

The is a great software it has the look of windows and security of linux but lilk any linux you can use this as a server i took one of my old pc's that needed new hard drives well i found out it had EIDE drived so i got a new MOBO and 4 750 drives giveing me 3T Then put linspire on snd i have new server on my home network one nice thing about cnr witch stands for click and run is it gives me acces to all sorts of software the best feature of linux to me is that both a windows or mac cac access it since i have them both but that is somthing that can be done with all linux OS.

A lot of people have complained about various features that Linspire offers. The most common being the use of the CNR client. What these people seem to not understand or in their bias against Linspire just plain omit is that there are two versions of the CNR membership.

CNR Basic and CNR Gold.

The second review on here "Why are you paying for free software??" fails to mention the reason this is a pay service. Yes you could use apt-get to install debian packages but CNR goes through the trouble of making sure each package has no dependency issues. While most current users of Linux don't mind a little trouble shooting must users of computers want something that just works.

At the time his review was written Basic was $20a year. It is now free, it is better than apt get in the sense that it is graphical, as in no command line a scary land similar to dos prompt for all the newbies and converts.

CNR offers an aisle system so all the programs you want can be organized and set to install with a single click instead of manually doing each one.

Best of all that so called horrible cost of $50 for CNR Gold well it isn't that bad at all. For one thing you get an unlimitted number of aisles. Two you get discounts on every click and buy program, because like it or not even in debian not every program is free. Believe me, I know. In just the last 4 months my CNR Gold membership has given me over a $80 savings subtract that 50 and I still saved 30. Think of your membership like one for Costco or Sams Club.

It just drives me crazy when people bash this service, it is a time saver and a headache saver. And I am not just some newbie. I have been using Linux for over 5 years now. I started with Redhat 8, I own a copy of Suse 10 and I have been with Linspire ever since they launched Linspire 4.5.

Upgraded to 9.2 from 7.x, very pleased with the product. It found the systems hardware quickly and with no effort on my part. My palm pilot, printer, usb thumb drive, email, web surfing are all 100% operational. Checking for O/S updates is a snap and requires no system admin knowledge. This Novell/SUSE is so much fun! For those wanting to compile code, browse internet, do email in an environment other than with MS, this is the way to go. Plus all your doc's, pdf's, jpeg's all work too. Install was a snap, gui's are great, very high quality product.

SuSE Linux is the oldest commercial distro of Linux, and they prove again why people are willing to pay for something that they can essentially get for free. SuSE 9.2 Pro puts Fedora Core, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian and the others to shame in every aspect.

Hardware support I found to be excellent, there was nothing that didn't detect or work correctly. YaST made it easy to choose what to install and they give you tons of options, more than WindowsXP could ever dream of giving you.

While i'm not a big fan of Gnome, Novell makes it look pretty good and surprisingly nice to use. KDE is in it's natural and beautiful state and the easy of use is pretty good.

Don't buy into the people who write 1-star reviews of this product claiming that SuSE destroyed all their data on install. If you don't know what you're doing you should not use this, period. Hold nobody accountable for yourself if you screw things up.

Fantastic distro, perfect for anybody learning to use Linux/UNIX. You won't be disappointed!

I say that the end of 2004, start of 2005 was the time to get a pimpin' new PC. I booted SuSE 7.2 on a partition with Windows 2000 many years ago and the result was not funny. If you choose to dual-boot a Windows Linux machine, then get two hard drives for it. Take a hint. XP2 should be on one of the hard drives. Better yet get a docking bay installed on your PC, like a ViPower Super Rack IDE for hard drives so you can pull them out and swap them around. As Windows user this is how you want to try out Linux on your machine... and you should, but read more to find out why.

Running Windows 95 and that means Windows 98 is illegal in your country and you are in the land of needing a new computer fast, feeling that you might have a box that looks like it is running windows 3.1 and to be honest now is your chance to move to Windows 2000 for a more solid operating system. Even NT users found more stability in Windows 2000, 98 users mostly gamers or downloaders, seeing the blue screen of death often, while Win 2K users doing something a little more software intensive like multimedia, graphics and servers that 98 could not manage. So came the day of the dual-processor, having an NT Dual 500mhz, upgrading to Win2K and you still had a fast machine, 64mb and 128mb games cards never really impressing you that much to get a better machine, a games console maybe cheaper and better, XP a little slow for you and besides, 2K was compatible with nearly everything and you could dual boot linux for fun. The only reason to buy a computer between the release of XP and now was if you did not have one and even then plenty of second hand units going around.

Year: 2005
256mb graphics cards, LCD monitors on the cheap, DVD-R media, Broadband, now is the time to upgrade your machine. AMD have some nice chips but the hyperthreading Intel P4 3.0GHz is a killer chip. 1GB of RAM, no problem. A pimpin' fast graphics card and you have a machine that can play Half-Life 2 on full resolution. The best games of the 21st century were released before Christmas this year, with 2005 bringing lots more to come. Broadband on the increase, DVD-R media and life might get less expensive if you are into computers and certainly a whole pile better.

Why not Linux? Well XP2 has the games and Linux not, so we can stop there. For speed on an OS, well Linux is a much faster, but XP2 is not bad on a system with half the ram of the above and a 1 GHz processor. ****If you are programming or doing fundamental computer work then do check out Linux because it might be what you need and learning Linux is like DOS with a bit of windows with all the free fundamental software you could want****. Why not Apple? Well the same as above, but you have a better selection of stuff and to be honest multimedia applications work well on an apple, and why shouldn't they since Apple is industry standard for that kind of design work, so what does XP2 have to offer?

Obviously stability (not to be confused with security). XP2 is a very stable operating system. It is more stable than Windows 2000. For that reason, I made the upgrade. I have not found XP2 doing much annoying or something that I could not fix with Google. Installing is a big deal because you need Internet for verification; however it is fast on a high end system. There are obvious things you must do after you install it like download Firefox and use it instead of IE and try to use realplayer instead of mediaplayer, use Microsoft's AntiSpyware, don't use the firewall, use zonelarm free instead, spend on a good anti-virus software package, turn off the preview pane in Internet Outlook mail or try to find a free mail browser, make sure you get all the latest windows updates, careful what you put into your machine or extract, careful what mail you open, change passwords every week, and you can achieve a secure on-line machine that can do anything most computers can do right now with a company that has admitted that it has a security problem that will be addressed with future updates, but overall one should be impressed with the OS for stability, not speed or security, but for not crashing, as long as there are no hardware configuration conflicts, that do happen, get someone else to build your machine and blame them when it doesn't come together (and it wont come together because things are now cutting edge so get it done elsewhere; if your task bar hangs this is because of routers or USB hubs that are not compatible). The machine like the above is a 5 star experience but God help those who don't address security issues the moment they go on-line with it which is a bit like just driving your car off a cliff. Expect to loose everything to a virus and have your address details stolen with all your VISA card info.

XP2 PRO is 5 stars if you visit a place on the web called Gibson research incorporated and test the vulnerability of your PC on-line. LINUX and UNIX are there for SECURITY if that is your main concern.

Extra hard drive = no installation hell if it goes wrong, ready for Linux, comes packed with all the documentation you could need, you will be learning KDE (the interface) and LINUX/UNIX SHELL commands. Learn Linux.

I've used several older versions of Mandrake Linux (9.1, 9.2, 10.0, and 10.1) and this is my first SUSE 9.2 Pro purchase. I was glad the installation process was easier than Mandrake's. And even though it can take SUSE 9.2 Pro longer than WinXP Pro to install (60 minutes instead of 45 minutes?) when you are booting up for the last time, your system will be completely UP-TO-DATE.

Why? Because the install program asks you if you want to update SUSE 9.2 Pro from the Internet. This updating process includes nVidia drivers, if your computer need them. [Try doing that with WinXP! It takes another 30-60 minutes downloading "security patches" and "driver updates", before you are REALLY up-to-date.]

Also, during installation, you don't have to worry if your computer's BIOS is set to boot from the CD-ROM or the hard drive, because SUSE 9.2 Pro gives you a simple graphic menu in front of the bootup ("Grub") that allows you to select "Hard Drive" -- even if the BIOS is set to CD-ROM. For those of you who install Operating Systems often, you will really appreciate this! Less rebooting means less time wasted, no matter how fast your systems is.

The best thing about using Linux is that you don't have to buy and install so many third party software packages. It comes with just about everything anyone needs to work or play.

Or, maybe the best thing is (when used on desktop computers) that Linux is basically NOT vulnerable to viruses and worms. To give you some idea of how important that is: I have never added anti-virus software to any Linux installations. Try running Windows without anti-virus, anti-spybot software... and additional firewall software.

I have to maintain several Windows systems also, and the most awful thing about them is the need to keep up with the OS patches, spybot updates, virus scans, etc etc.

With Linux, you boot up, and you are good to go "foreva". Till you want to turn off your computer, maybe to give the fan a rest? When you reboot, SUSE 9.2 Pro will automatically update itself (yes, OK, like later versions of Windows). But in my experience, the patches are not as frequent, and not as URGENT, either.

I look forward to buying SUSE 9.3 Pro, which is due out April 2005. It will include "Xen", allowing you to run multiple instances of the OS on "native" virtual machine setting - that promises to be faster than VMWare.

I wanted to donate my computer to a local school, but wanted to erase my personal information off of it first. Even before purchasing, the customer support staff patiently and quickly answered my questions. WipeDrive was easy to use with clear prompts, and did exactly what I wanted. I chose the single wipe option, so it only took about 40 minutes, but after reinstalling the operating system I checked and nothing was left. The product was cheaper than a few of the others I looked at and I was very impressed with the support and the clarity of the instructions they gave. I would definitely recommend this product.

Can't say for sure if this program worked, because the old computer that I tried it on ceased functioning after I started the program. Well, it did destroy any information on the hard drive... but a hammer would've gotten the same end result.

This product did not work for me. It was a waste of time and money. The box promised ease of use for any system. Well, it didn't work on my windows 98 system no matter what I tried. After several unsuccessfull attempts booting to the WipeDrive CD (and floppy you can create from the CD), I tried booting up to WipeDrive AFTER reformatting my hard drive. Still no success. All I got every time was beeping and flashing gibberish on the screen for over 30 minutes each attempt.

I had no trouble operating the software, and it consistently appeared to perform the task of overwriting all portions of my hard drive. The problem, though, is that when the program cleans or verifies that the drive is clean, it displays only a percentage of the space on the hard drive, rather than the amount of space. Because I got the program for the purpose of permanently eliminating malware on my drive, I never knew if Wipedrive was able to clean that part of the drive. Wipedrive offers no means for examining the raw data on the drive or for determining the total space that it verifies is clean. Also, even with an average size 80 GB drive, each overwrite takes an extremely long time, as does the verification routine. You can clean only the entire hard disk and cannot limit it to one drive or partition. It would be helpful if you could selectively clean and/or scan only a portion of the drive, or scan from the end instead of from the beginning. In sum, the product seems well designed for a routine, single cleaning to eliminate personal data on an entire hard disk, but its lack of options left me wondering if it had done the job for me. A partition manager plus one of the free downloads (such as Eraser) could be a better choice in some situations.

You start off with a Live-CD which virtually everyone offers these days. It's a great way to try before installing.

To install just double-click on the "Install icon" on your desktop.

And unlike the ever-popular Ubuntu distro, Mandriva One comes with NVIDIA/ATI video drivers, Sun Java and Adobe Flash right out of the box. You don't have to go hunting for them later. They are installed automatically.

I've been an Ubuntu user for most of the past few years. I decided to give Mandriva a try and frankly I find it even better for the average user than Ubuntu.

The installation was even smoother. And unlike with the Ubuntu Live CD, Mandriva one also gives you the option to run the installation at startup without running the Live CD itself. So it works either way.

And personally, I find Mandriva's ia ora theme to be the best around. It's very attractive without being overbearing (and unlike Ubuntu's, it's not brown :-> ).

And unlike the confusion Ubuntu causes by their "Kubuntu" distribution (Ubuntu has GNOME, Kubuntu has KDE), Mandriva is Mandriva, period. The Mandriva One Live CD comes in two versions, GNOME or KDE.

After installing either, you can always easily add the other if you desire both (as I do). The RPMDrake graphical installer is about the best I've seen and I've used a number of Linux distros over the years. And just like any other major distribution, Mandriva's repository has thousands of programs. Most anything you want is easily found and installed, via the RPMDrake application. It has a very slick GUI.

I don't know how others here can feel the opposite that I do. It's great, and all the "professional" reviews I've read, agree.

Note: while MndrivaOne costs nothing (if you download it from any number of Mandriva mirror sites), Mandriva is a for-profit company and they offer their "Powerpack" which comes with more free software (as well as some good commercial apps) and direct support from Mandriva that's not provided with MandrivaOne (or "Mandriva Free).

Mandriva One is a kind of stripped down operating system for users new to Linux.

It has basic programs included--like Office Writer (which easily interprets Word for Windows files)--Linux web browsers, firewalls, calculators, email clients and so on. But for the fancy stuff, users need a more comprehensive system such as Mandriva 2007, or the Mandriva 2007 Power Pack. The Spring 2007 version of Mandriva 2007 includes KDE 4.0.

After trying Mandriva One on a new machine several months ago, I can only say, I don't recommend it. It's too basic, and not worth it, now that Mandriva has worked out some of the bugs from its newest 2007 generation.

This book is fairly easy to use but it does get somewhat complicated at times, especially if you have never used Linux before. It does look somewhat like windows though and for that I am thankful or I believe I would be totally lost!

I first tried Linspire 5-O when there was a free promotional offer for it. Running it live seemed good, so I decided to install it on a brand new hard disk. Big mistake. After using it for about an hour, I found OpenOffice to be very lacking, as the version it was distributed with was FAR behind the latest. The only way that upgrading it to the latest version that was mentioned was by signing up to their Click N' Run program, which costs money. I had sound problems as well. It messed up the master boot record so I can no longer boot into windows, which I needed in order to do work (using the LATEST OpenOffice). This took a couple of months for me to fix using tutorials (and I have been using computers for over a decade now) and attempts to get support. Now, using Ubuntu (which is completely free), I have had none of these problems and everything is working perfectly. If you want a good Linux distribution that will not cause you headaches, I reccomend not using Linspire, and one of the more mature distributions instead.

Quick Summary:
Linspire is a linux based OS that provides an easy means of converting from a Windows platform. Installing and getting application software is made easy through a database named CNR (Click-N-Run) and installing those programs is streamlined. It is great for people unfamiliar with Linux but may not be the best distro for people looking to become knowledgable in Linux. There are other Linux OS's that are free of charge, more open (less restraints) and have a number of forums for support. Linspire charges you for software that may be free! outside of Linspire's Click-N-Pay system. Linspire comments out or limits package repositories - which is essentially trying to make you use their way of doing things - and make an educated decision before purchase. If you want the easiest possible transition from Windows to Linux and don't mind the restraints - go Linspire.

PRO's:
If you're a beginner to Linux - don't know much about Operating Systems - and don't plan on learning a whole lot about them - then Linspire is probably your best choice. It offers the stability and security of a Linux system with the familiar Windows atmosphere. Install is easy and getting around will be as well. You can find a lot of software in their Click-N-Run database and program install is painless. If your familiar with Linux or OS's - or you are willing to learn and you will work around the restraints in Linspire - then go for it! BUT...

CON's:
If you want to learn Linux, tweak the system and enjoy the freedom that is open source OS - then you should check out Ubuntu or SUSE. Both of those are free for download and install (SUSE will even mail you an install CD!). Linspire charges ~$50 for their OS and they keep on charging for all kinds of things. The aformentioned CNR (Click-N-Run) has a lot of the programs which you pay for that are free otherwise! So you pay for a Linux OS (rather than use a free one) then you pay to install programs (rather than download and install the free one yourself). The aim here, other than funding, is to provide people with the easiest means of Linux. The downfall is that you are restrained and seem to pay for things that you could get for free. Slip a DVD into the drive and if you don't have Linspire's commercial DVD player installed - a window opens up and informs you that you'll have to pay Linspire to play DVDs. You'll also notice that every time you put in an application program CD, you get a similar pop-up from Linspire reminding you that you could be paying them money instead of doing things your own way.

I realize the world runs off currency, but I also realize that there's an alternate means to a more stable OS than Windows without a Click-N-Pay backbone. Go Linux! Less intrusive, more stable and secure, more freedom! Choose your distro!

I switched from gotomypc which was easy to connect 2 PC's but it kept messing up files in the database. So I bought PcAnywhere 12.1 which will NOT connect at all==shows "Waiting for ....
I loaded the PCAnywhere on both the mac and the Parallels side of the Macbookpro running XP pro (HOSTS) and the remote. Maybe I have having trouble because I am using a Airport Extreme router which automatically assigns a 10.0.1.1.. IP address. I had 2 network guys working on this. The hotline said to have Roadrunner configure ports to 5631 and 5632 but roadrunner has all ports open and do not reconfigure. My network guys reconfigured ports and also forwarded them to the 66.....IP address - still no luck.
Will try a Linksys router next. Wasted tons of time.

The only thing I don't like is the pass word feature, you must enter a password- but every thing else works nicely- i'm a newbie at this so its different, I've using Ubuntu more than XP now.

Easy to set up but after that it's just one headache after the next with drivers... it's worse than vista, yes I said it...VISTA sucks but at least it can access the internet right out of the box without IT technical configuration. It works with nothing but the programs that came with it, and wireless internet, forget it...in the Ubuntu users guide it says if ubuntu does not recognize your wireless card, get a new one.....yeah right: great guide.. I'll just use OS X or Xandros.

OS X is the best no hassel OS, next to that for my Eee PC I have switched back to what actually works...Xandros, which is the OS that comes preloaded on the Eee, it's the best and everything wroks soon as you turn on the computer. No need to totally reconfigure Ubuntn/Xubuntu etc you have better things to do with your life then soend days on end configuring Ubuntu to play mp3's, watch you tube, have sound, be able to get on the internet, not have a retarded resolution and virtually anything else you may want to do give extra wasted time for config. Ubuntu is a waste of time, Xandros Linux just works...nuff said.

I procured my copy of ubuntu directly from canonical about 2 months ago, after a few weeks of messing around with it I decided to wait for the lts release. the program itself is awesome, its efficient aesthetically pleasing and most certainly superior to windows. Unfortunately 7.10 is notorious for having issues with propreitary hardware from HP Pavillion laptops. I fought with my broadcom drivers for about 2 weeks trying to get them to work. and the nvidia. In the end I was still having issues with various files and hardware. 8.04 was just released thursday and it is phenominal. i had no problems logging on, I didn't have to enter exceptions to the logon script and i didn't have issue with the graphics or sound. But most importaintly I didn't have nearly as much trouble with the hardware in my computer.
The best thing about Ubuntu is that you have a dedicated group of people on [...] that walk you through any issues you have with the system. I truly do look forward to joining to assist as soon as I can get a hang of the system, they have been truly helpful everytime i've had an issue.
Canonical states that they want to bring the Ubuntu philosophy of goodwill to others to the software world. They have succeeded admirably with this operating system. And as for Mr. Jobs and Mr. Gates, keep an eye out because Ubuntu is superior to both mac os and windows by leaps and bounds and is free as opposed to 200.00 a release.

I found out after 3 calls to Symantec support. On the last call, I demanded to speak with a supervisor who admitted the shortcoming.

To make matters worse, I have to wait 60 days for Symantec to refund my money!!

In no way am I knocking this product. However, before you buy take note that PCanywhere 12.0 in not compatible with the new Windows Vista OS. I have used Symantec's products for some time now & there are no cautions on their web site that 12.0 would not work with Vista. I only found out after buying it.

I'm what I consider to be computer savvy and thought I'd have little difficulty installing this software. Boy, was I wrong! I had to pay a computer person to come to my home and the hoome of the other user to install this software after MONTHS of trying to get it to work.

The reason I gave it 3 stars? Because once it was installed it works perfectly and both of us absolutely love it.
