There are two City Navigator 2009 updates. The difference is in the data formatting. One version is NT, the other not. Call Garmin first and check which version works with your GPS unit.
One version is titled "City Navigator North American NT Map Update 2009."
One version is titled "City Navigator North America 2009 MapSource Update."
Almost identical names but they are NOT interchangeable.
I bought the NT version, it arrived from Amazon quickly, but it wouldn't work with my handheld eTrex unit. I called Garmin. They were very helpful, understood immediately, sent me the correct version at no cost, the replacement arrived in three days, and it works great.
Save yourself some time and call ahead.

This was easy to update and the new maps are obviously much better since there has been road construction on the East Coast in the past 2 years with a few new roads, exits, etc. Just wish you could use this for more than one Garmin in the household. Very expensive if you have more than one.

My husband got it for Christmas, 2009, updated his GPS and realized he couldn't update the other two GPS's we have in the house. It is only licensed for one update and when you go to the site to see how to get the other's updated, it gives no direction, but says you can get multiple licenses.
After only using it for one week, he noticed streets that have been in existence for 8-10 years are still not in the update. It is definately not worth the price.

$Garmin needs to realize that most GPS units no longer sell for $500+. I used to update my maps every year on my modest Street Pilot C330, but it no longer makes any sense. I can sell it on eBay and pick up a new unit, with new maps, for less than what Garmin sells their map updates. $50+ for a map update might have been reasonable a few years ago, but GPS prices are a fraction of what they once were. Map update prices have pretty much stayed the same though. Very little changes in these updates each year too. Until Garmin gets realistic with their update pricing, I'll just pick up a new $100 unit every year or two, and sell the old one.$ 2stars - "No longer cost effective to update my maps" (D. Hentze)
I bought this because my Nuvi had a 2007 map. However, the model I have said Street names... after taking over an hour to download the update...I lost the variety of voices I used to have and it no longer says street names!!!

Now I have to figure out how to get it back to the original software.

I decided, with some trepidation at the age of 62, to learn Spanish so that I can make a bigger contribution in education programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium where I volunteer. Many offerings are in both English and Spanish. The ability to communicate and connect with parents and chaperones who speak only Spanish would be especially meaningful to me. I am very impressed with what I have accomplished in a few short weeks and look forward to completing the course. Just as they say in the ads, I am convinced that anyone motivated to learn Spanish could do so with this product.

I recommend that interested shoppers look for discounts. I could have saved $50 if I had been more attentive to a special offer in Scientific American Magazine.

In response to many good reviews here, both pro and con, and to my own experience of purchasing Rosetta Stone (Latin American) Spanish, 1,2 & 3 with the Audio Companion through Amazon,... I would like to alert potential purchasers to two mistakes I made... 1) I failed to find out if the (used) version I purchased (for nearly $400.00) for Mac was for the current level of Mac software (OS X). IT WAS NOT! And, 2) I failed to research the available information (even if just from Amazon) about the REPUTATION OF THE SELLER (no need to name it here). I have not been able to get adequate assistance so far. (After finding that the two "help" email addresses included with my order were both extinct, I went through Amazon to get assistance. They got the seller to respond from a third email address, but as yet no reciprocity, and feel out of -for me- a substantial investment). I admit to being one who is vastly intimidated when trying to go back and reconnect -digitally, especially- with a seller. So MY SECOND POINT, then, is to DEFINITELY DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE SELLER as well as the product.
I must admit to one other example of poor judgement on my part. Upon, subsequent to my purchase, rereading all reviews, I realize I did not read adequately the negative reviews of the product itself, especially those related to the customer opinions about "poor software design", which, in hindsight, I would consider now quite helpful.

$It sounds like a good idea, but it's not. I used this product over time, so this is not a snap judgement. Rosetta Stone does not deliver what is promises. I learned more of a foreign language in a semester of college than this poorly designed product delivered in 6 months of use. Massive waste of time and money. Now, several hundred dollars worth of software sits on my shelf collecting dust. PROS: - Rosetta Stone will consume hours of your time and lull you into believing that you are learning a language. CONS: - WAY, WAY over-priced. - Designed to work only when the CD is in your computer (TIP: Plan on carrying the language disk around with your laptop if you want to use the software.) - Voices become extremely grating over time. - Moves you at a snail's pace; if you are learning a language for business or expect to move past kindergarten level in a few months, then forget this product. If you want to learn a language then I'd recommend you take a course at your local college or buy one of the many texts available and a dictionary; sadly for me, either of these routes would have cost me a fraction of the price of this product and served me better in the long run. I always buy this software when I upgrade a system. It works great when you are traveling in an RV and want to know your way around no matter what town or State you are in. I usually print out the maps for areas we plan to look around. It also suggests campgrounds, places to eat and etc.
I usually print out the map without the directions to save paper. I also use it at home when I want to see where something is (friends house, shopping, etc).

I read some of the 1 star reviews - I feel sorry for them, but did not have any problems. Installed on both computers in our home, laptop and desktop running xp professional. No problems ever. It does take a long time to set up, so I do it and save it for my son who is 7. He needs a little guidance, but does it mostly himself. Lots of superfluous extras, but still good. My last experience was with the original version in sixth grade 25+ years ago on an Apple. This is MUCH improved. We really enjoy the game. If you buy a second small wagon, you can carry more. Buy oxen (6 or more for one wagon, 10 for 2) to carry the weight. Do not use the Conestoga wagon - it is too heavy regardless of what the pictures show. Do not buy any furniture or any heavy iron items. Hope you enjoy the game. Make sure you use your skill points at the very beginning, they really help.

said it would work on vista well definately not to my satisfaction took hours to find a patch for it to work at all. Finally got it to work but some of the features are lost which is a shame. This is a wonderful game used to enjoy it on my xp thus wanted it for my vista it sits collecting dust due to the lost things for vista but I highly recommmend it for XP

BEWARE! If you buy this product you can never resell it. Never return it. Never upgrade it. You better love it. Because you're stuck with it. I purchased version 2 a year ago and wanted to upgrade to 3 so I thought I'd sell my version 2. Rosetta Stone cancelled my eBay auction and threatened LEGAL action for attempting to resell an original legitimate in the box version of their product. They will only let you return it for 6 months and ONLY if you bought it directly from them (sorry Amazon) and there are NO upgrades. Basically, I'm out $500. Though I would never ever consider buying another Rosetta Stone product, where the customer is always wrong. BEWARE of this company.

I'm surprised at the poor reviews. Apparently, the packaging issue has been resolved, as my discs were not glued to the box. That aside, I LOVE this program! I took Spanish in high-school, over 20 years ago. I didn't do well then, and have forgotten all but "hola," and "gracias," since then. The first few lessons were pretty easy, very basic, but I was amazed at how quickly my vocabulary grew. I put the audio companion in my car, and can actually picture what they're saying without any translation. I'm stunned! I'm close to the end of level one, and it's gotten a bit more difficult. But at the end of each little section, I am joyfully surprised at what I'm actually retaining. This program is great!

While my experience with the CD glued to the sleeve was the same as the other review, I found that denatured alcohol would remove the glue quite well. Rosetta really should look into this.
Beyond this small problem I have found this product to be exactly as promised. It is the easiest, fastest, and in my experience the most successful method of learning a new language in the shortest amount of time. Rosetta conveys vast amounts of well thought out information in a manner that is really quite revolutionary to the field of language learning. By simply going thru the exercises your will develope the numerous skills required to know and use a new language. You are simultaneously learning the vocabulary and grammar as well as learning to hear and speak Spanish. All of this happens without the laborius and tedious study that is normally required in other methods of language study. By using repetition and the introduction of small amounts of new information in each new lesson you will learn how to think in Spanish rather than translating each word or phrase that you want to use.
Let me add that the lessons are more useful and pertinent than any other lessons I have used. It is not "tourist language".
In conclusion I would say that if you are willing to put in the time to do the exercises you will be able to speak Spanish with confidence in
the shortest amount.

Do not buy this item if you want current maps. I just purchased this item from Amazon.com (at a higher price of course). This is a 2008 version of the City Navigator maps. The Amazon listing does not mention this fact. There is a 2009 version of the maps. Amazon should not even be selling this version. Garmin wants to charge me for an updated cd and of course wants to charge shipping and tax as well. Can you spell rip off.

As others have said, the shipped product is V9 for 2008. Attempting to install City Navigator NT North America V9 places only the locked map into your existing MapSource. Now the nightmare begins.

CTRL-U from MapSource brings up the unlock wizard. The only option it gives is to go online. The Garmin website it takes you to is a swamp of circular steps and silently failing scripts.

Into this morass I tried to invoke the arcane codes it required. Unfortunately, you don't know what codes to use? Does Garmin mean the GPS serial number or the City Navigator serial number? What in tarnation is the "product code"? And where is this magic "unlock certificate" with a six letter secret code?

I finally located the certificate hidden in the massive, and tough, plastic outer packaging.

Entering this, the Garmin website refreshed but seemingly did nothing. Hello? Meanwhile, MapSource just sat there telling me that V9 was locked.

Navigating the Garmin site to MyMaps, I retrieve all maps for my GPS, to discover the worse-than-useless Garmin site just applied my new certificate to an old City Navigator V7 that I had.

So Garmin stole my money. They won't do a thing to rectify the problem.

If a software developer with 24 years of experience can't get this poorly implemented unlocking crap to work, what chance do you have?

BOught this to add onto my Garmin hand held GPS, and it goes into detail as a true street navigator. You can look up and mark any address you want now and put it in your GPS to help you along the way.

I am the kind of person who was never good at learning a foreign language. In high school I took 2 years of German; in college I had two semesters of German. Yet I was barely able to ask where the bathroom was after all that. It just never clicked.

Fast forward 15 years and Rosetta Stone has transformed the language learning process! For years I've seen ads for Rosetta Stone in magazines and at the airport. Looking at the price tag I was always thinking to myself "Yeah, right. There's money that will go right down the drain!" Little did I know how wrong I was.

I started out skeptical -- and have to admit I was making it hard from the start -- but after two lessons with Rosetta Stone I was actually starting to enjoy learning French! I found myself really getting into the lessons and -- amazingly -- was starting to retain some of the words and their meaning!

Rosetta isn't like tradition language classes. You don't try to memorize words and phrases. No, they do away with all that nonsense. Instead you are immersed in the language through a multi-media experience. Images and sounds encapsulate you. You are actually learning French as though you were dropped right in the middle of France! You are learning it how every school child learns it!

Now here we are 3 months later and I can honestly hold a basic conversation in French. I feel confident I could get on the plane and land in France and be able to get around and take care of myself with relying on English or a translator. Now THAT is amazing -- at least for me!

This old dog has been taught some new tricks -- and I highly recommend this software not only for business folks, but also for kids and others who want to learn a foreign language without being forced to memorize useless phrases that make the proces so difficult.

I was pleasantly surprised with the completeness of this course. It contains everything to gently introduce the user to the French language, with each stage leading to a higher one.
WIth the audio companion included, learning the french language become even easier. This is highly recommended

I have used this product and have some mixed feelings. I also have National Geo Topo and like it very well. Garmin works and it does transfer to my hand help GPS. That is what I bought it for. The National Geographic Topo wont do this. The product would stand to imporve by adding more of the existing "Ghost Towns" and old mines like the Chumung Mine near Masonic. I was able to navigate to the Chumung Mine and it seemed to work with my Garmin Summint GPS. For example, it seems to take extra time to calculate milage or distance to a route. Hopefully, this is not due to my lack of experience with the software. I do wish it had more of the feel of the topo's I have worked with in the past.

This product does provide decent topo along with normal road, street and highway presentation. It is easy to manage moving to my Garmin GPSMap 60CSx the data I need. However, some updated construction is missing. I see no way to update the construction information.

I bought this because it has the topo maps and interface for the Garmin 60 CSx. I've used my GPS and software in the Colorado and Wyoming mountains.

I'm not very impressed with the quality of the maps. They are missing a lot of detail such as common hiking trails and 4wd roads. I realize they are only 1:100K maps so they won't have the contour detail of some of the software that provides 1:24K for an entire state. However, they still should have common roads and trails.

I don't think the software user interface is all that intuitive or powerful either. The menus are not grouped logically. There isn't an easy way to show profiles for a route. It doesn't provide a 3-D view. Delorme Topo USA has way more features and even 1:24K scale for the same price. I don't see why can't Garmin provide some of these features.

I really only use this because it provides the maps for the GPS unit itself.

I plan all my routes and waypoints in Maptech Terrain Navigator Colorado because it contains the necessary detail. Then I upload the route information to the GPS. National Geographic TOPO is great too if you need 1:24K detail.

My daughter did learn SOME Spanish from this program but I cannot give it a good rating because of the COST!!! Good grief! Not only is it outragiously expensive, you CANNOT resell it! Rosetta Stone is making so much money that they are PAYING people to sit around 24/7 and watch the resale market (Amazon included!) and will SHUT DOWN YOUR AUCTION! Even though you never signed an agreement not to resell it (public/private schools do this)and you ARE the legitimate owner of a NON-PIRATED item, they will accuse you of such. Therefore, you are stuck with this expensive item forever! SHAME ON YOU, ROSETTA STONE! I have lost all respect for this company. I have purchased curriculum for 10 yrs from many companies and this is the ONLY company that practices JUNK YARD DOG treatment of their customers, AND they are by far the MOST EXPENSIVE! I will NEVER purchase another R.S. product and do all I can do to get the word out there to others that are considering a purchase like this.

I felt I was getting "too old" to learn a new language but like magic, after 6 weeks of courses I was able to communicate easily on a recent trip to Spain. A bit frustrating at times with the pronunciations of words and I have gotten a few "giggles" from my Latin friends, but I'm still learning. Save your dollars up and then go with this quality set!

I purchased my Rosetta Stone Spanish product in April 2008. The product is fine - slowly but surely I'm learning the language. In August 2008 my computer crashed and I replaced it but when I went to load the software I got a message saying it was already activated and needed to contact customer service. I've tried phone calls and emails and it's now two weeks later and it still hasn't been done. I've provided a copy of my credit card statement, a copy of the box with the product code, and a copy of the Activation ID page that came with the product...but I can't find a receipt. They appear not to believe I'm the owner of the product, although I did register it the day I bought it. Days go by between contacts. All in all, I'll never buy another Rosetta Stone product.

If you're looking for a handheld GPSr unit for off-road use, you won't find a better, more cost-effective product.

I'd been researching to buy a new GPSr unit for two years. During that period, a couple of the major manufacturers announced new lines that really got my hopes up, but turned out to be disappointments upon release. (No names here; if you've done your homework you know which units I'm talking about). I'd about decided to go with the tried & true Garmin 60 Csx when I started seeing some buzz about the DeLorme PN-40. The more I looked into it, the more it became apparent that this was the unit to get.

I have had zero problems with this unit. Sure, the included Topo 7 Mapping software has a learning curve but that's what you would expect for a product having the advanced capabilities which it has. Also I have seen complaints that the display screen is smaller than some other manufacturers units. I decided I would rather have a screen that was more readable under various conditions than a bigger screen that was less readable.

But the two deal makers for this unit were the $29.95 annual map subscription (USGS quads, color and b&w aerials, satellite, coastal, etc. images) and the EXCELLENT DeLorme users forum. The maps I have already downloaded would cost me hundreds (going on thousands) of $$ if I had to buy them individually; and whenever I've been confused or had a question about how to do something with the unit, it's always been answered on the forum. BTW, DeLorme staff actively participates in the forum; find another brand doing that!

An earlier review said they were disappointed because the unit didn't show trails. Not sure what they were talking about; the USGS topo quads are the same as the paper 1:24k quads, so all trails shown on topo quads are shown. (The base map on the unit obviously doesn't include that level of detail for the whole USA; I'm sure it would require multiple tetrabytes! You import to the GPSr the areas that you want.)

Anyway, I could go on forever but bottom line - I couldn't be happier with this unit!

I bought this thinking hiking trails would be on the maps that I install. This is not the case. Disappointment #1. I get the topo software on the computer and think I can download maps from there onto the PN40. I tried for a couple hours and gave up. My wife tried for a few more hours and gave up. Now I use it a pedometer basically since there are no maps for where we walk. Also several streets on the maps are wrong, showing streets leading where there are none and have never been. If you follow the streets on the maps, you'll be going through vacant fields and several fenced yards. Everything I try does not work or I fight it for several frustrating attempts, then next time back to square 1. Even using as a pedometer it's not working exactly correctly, for example I reset, then walked 3.2 miles in 45 minutes and it showed my average was 3.5mph. This is not correct as I'm relatively sure at the pace I walk I would cover more than another 0.3 miles in 15 additional minutes time. So to summarize I'll still rate it a 4 but I'm very disappointed really.

This is a nice little unit. I especially like the ability to download color satellite photos to overlay them on your topo map. I had purchased one of the first TOPO DVD and enojoyed using. I was a little disapointed that not much has changed in version 7.0 execpt of the ability to down load overlays. The electronic compass is not to bad but it did take a couple of attempts to calibrate correctly in order to work properly. The biggest problem I see with the unit is it's battery life. I had put new batteries in the unit a couple of days earlier and used it for a short period of time to establish my home location, downloaded some satellite images of the area I was going to be hunting and I thought I was ready to go. However, as I got to my spot in the dark the low battery indicator came on. I had to power down the unit hoping some of the battery would came back to get me back to my car. It did but it was a little nerve racking because I had forgotten my backup compass. If taking the unit to an area you're not farmiliar with make sure you print a map from the TOPO program and bring a backup compass or carry lots of batteries with you.

I have owned other GPS units and this one is by far the best I have ever owned. I primarily use it for geocaching but I also use it for routing and POI. The user input buttons are very intuitive. Much easier to use than previous GPS units I have owned. The buttons are so intuitive that I didn't even have to open the manual. This GPS is fast to acquire satellites. The screen scrolls and adjusts smoothly and is easy to read. The layered mapping is a very good concept and works very well. Albeit Google satellite map imagery are of higher resolution and can be zoomed in further the downloadable color DOQQ satellite maps are usable and sufficient for a portable GPS device. The included Topo USA 7 software is very powerful but can be (at first) a little daunting to use. It is not intuitive and will require an occasional help file to use. While not necessary, you can download additional layered maps using the Netlink tab within the software. It's too bad that the maps you are requesting to download are not available for download in real-time. You have to wait (the next day) for Delorme to email you when they are ready to be downloaded. Managing geocaches, maps, routes, and waypoints using Topo USA 7 is very powerful and useful. The included DVD sections of the USA are great for POI. Once loaded on the GPS, searching for a POI near your location is very fast and easy to navigate. You can even search for POI near other waypoints! Nice!
