overall. it is a great product.
but it is not like gps installed in the car (not talking about portable unit on windshield)
it has few second leg time on display. so if you happend to pass busy highway overpass divided into 6 differnt direction...(ie Dallas Fort/worth) good luck... (make sure you have a navigator with you.)

BUT STILL I WILL SAY GOOD FOR THE BUCK,,, WISH IT HAD AUTO RE- CALCULATIION MODE. INCASE YOU MISSED THE TURN.

I used this software to map a trip across the country from New York to Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, and a couple more stops. If your stops are near major roads then this software usually works. But if your stops are off the major roads then the software doesn't know if it's routing you on a paved road or a dirt road. The software routed me on a dirt road for 46 miles. So 20 miles from my last stop I had to come up with my own route after running into the dirt road. I ended up having to drive back to where I started from. On another occasion the software directed me to a road, but there was no road.

The software comes in useful when you've missed a turn. Press F3 and it will find a route back to where you want to go and direct you. Other than that, I didn't find the prompt particularly useful. The map seems to be 2 seconds or so behind me, so it areas where you have 3 exits, one after the other, it doesn't help.

If you're looking to save a few bucks and get the 2006 version I would say that you won't be saving anything. I don't know if the 2009 version is any better, but I can say that I'll never let this software route a trip for me again.

This is a great product. We have used it with a laptop on at least 10 trips and it has very good features - voice instruction; lets you see where on the map you are driving; gives restaurants and attractions. I would recommend this for anyone who wants something better than a hand-held gps or someone who doesn't have a nav system built in to their vehicle. I bought my edition on Amazon and paid under $90.00 for it.

Save your money and buy the Garmin Nuvi 350. MSST 2007 has managed to let me dwon, again. or rather it is MS. My BIGGEST complaint among many (and I will spare everyone)is the inability to take my planning as I set it up in route planning. It overrides my coices I add and reroutes me. VERY aggravating as the direction they give me is NOT the correct way! Another complaint is why should everyone have to buy a new version EVERY year. We should have the ability for a small fee to obtain updates, product maintenance and ACCURATE directions. My neighborhood isn't even on the map yet and we have been here 3 years!

They promised "the most robust data management solution that allows sync and individualizing your mobile phone", well let me tell you this Susteen staff: I DO NOT THINK SO!!! Purchasing DataPilot has been the worst mistake I've made since I purchased Glitter on DVD 3 years ago. The only phone that actually worked was my Motorola V3 and that because, after several emails, Susteen "Support Staff" replay me with an extremely weird "How to make the software recognize the phone" email. Are you familiar with Motorola Phone Tools easy to navigate graphic interface of "drag and drop" files to the computer? Well let's just say is a little bit different with this program, very, very different. After I purchased this software I understood why piracy is increasing exponentially everyday, when you pay top dollars for something (well $43.90) you expect it to work with minimum hassle or complication. It's unbelievable how you can search the web for information on BitPim (available for free) and find a lot of rich information and help from strangers and then you have this big companies with
Labyrinthine websites. Bottonline: This software is plague with incompatibilities, if you have a Motorola phone use Motorola Phone Tools, if you have another make of cellphone try a free software such as BitPim and donate money to the developers trying to make your life more easy :)

Too bad we can't give a negative number of stars.

First, recognize that I am an electronics engineer who works with (and sometimes designs parts of) computers every single day of my life, including using/installing incredibly complicated pieces of software that cost thousands of dollars. I am extremely computer savvy and technically literate. Also, recognize that my computer, my OS, and my phone were supposed to be 100% compatible with the Datapilot software.

That having been said, I've just finished spending approximately 6 hours trying to get the software to work with my phone, as well as rehabilitating my computer from the damaged caused by the attempts at getting Datapilot to work.

I've read every bit of the installation instructions. I've read every potentially related article in their "knowledge base". I've tried everything they recommend as well as everything else I could think of, reinstalling things many times over. I've completely verified, by other means, that everything on my end (computer, phone, USB connection, etc.) works just fine with other applications and when used in any other manner *except* with the Datapilot software. I've verified, time and time again, that the drivers are the correct ones according to their instructions, and that the drivers are being installed properly, and that there is absolutely no problem.

Except that Datapilot absolutely will not recognize my phone, no matter what.

I've never requested a refund on any piece of software before, and I've never posted a software review anywhere before, but this is an outrageously bad piece of software. (Or else their compatibility list is a lie.)

Aside from the software just not working, there are problems with various pieces of documentation conflicting with each other, also.

I've requested a refund (I bought the software directly from Datapilot, not through Amazon). However, in detailed searching of their Knowledge Base, I now find that they say that a refund of something bought via credit card may take up to 2 billing cycles (i.e. up to 2 months) to show back up as a refund, which is ridiculous. They also say that they are going to charge a $9.95 "handling fee" regardless of the reason for the refund. The price of the software alone, in downloaded version not on CD, was $34.95. So they are charging nearly 30% of the purchase price for "handling" of something that is not physical and doesn't require any re-stocking or anything like that. And that refund policy is not posted in the normal website any place where you might possible see it before you buy.

Although I've never requested a software refund before, and only once or twice in my life requested a refund on other types of products, at this point I'm prepared to take them to court and spend even more money just for the satisfaction of getting that extra $9.95 back. I've never been more livid about a purchase in my life.

If I don't hear back from them right away and get a full refund very quickly, I'm definitely reporting them to the Better Business Bureau in any case.

The bottom line is that it's a great idea. And you may get lucky (like one or two of the people here)and have it work for you. But for most people it's a complete waste of time and money.

This is great software. Ive used it my car with laptop and GPS on a variety of road trips MN, TX, LA, UT, MO, AR and gotten myself into and out of many situations without a hitch, except for being towed out of a bayou in Louisiana twice but that was my bad not the softwares. This software will allow you to get to places that others wouldnt be able to find.

Ive also used this software to map the entire Salt Lake City Utah region from Ogden all the way to Payson for a telecom company that was using the info for a Wi-Fi positioing service and this NG product was dead on. This job required driving every residential and commercial street in the the Utah metropolitan area and it was flawless, and only off where new developments were being constructed. The onle thing I would add is to install the maps for the region youll be visitng instead of swapping cds in and out so the transition will blend seamlessly.

For $49 its tough to beat.

When I was a lad, I used to walk into the office of any service station and grab a stack of free road maps. There were maps of the city I was in, nearby states, and even the USA. Gas was allot cheaper in those days too! Those were the days..... Now here's a product that almost fills the empty feeling left by the demise of free gas station maps and service with a smile. When I saw the price of this package I thought, "Well, can't be much more than overview state maps showing major highways." I was delightfully wrong! With these maps I can zoom out to an overview or zoom in to the city street level of any street in the country. The fact that the states include Hawaii and Alaska was a pleasant surprize as well. If you have a laptop in your Rv or are an armchair traveler at home with a computer, I highly recommend this beautiful and complete set of maps. Now if National Geographic would oly offer to clean the windshield and check the oil!

1stars - "Lots of Bugs! Topic Entertain publishes this CD" (D. Kiang)

I've used versions of topo mapping software from Topo!, Garmin, DeLorme and National Geographic.

I use maps for hiking and the quality in the 17-CD set is very good. Garmin MapSource has the same territory in 3-CDs and the detail in much more minimal.

Back Roads with version 4.2.3 of Topo! from Nat Geo's website is one of the better products out there. You can adjust the shading factor, get 3D view, and send co-ordinates to your GPS.

I did have to contact support to realize there was a new version, but they got back to me in 24 hours. I had a tech support question on Garmin MapSource and got no response from their tech support.

The only downside of Back Roads for me was that it can only upload waypoints and not maps to my Garmin GPS. Otherwise I would use it exclusively.

Back Roads allows you to enter your co-ordinates in UTM, unlike MapSource. The drawing and route tools are better. The elevation profile is another feature that is not there in MapSource.

I read the complaint about elevation lines not meeting up, but you get the same problem with paper USGS maps.

Back Roads also prints nice maps that you can slide into a plastic sheet for hiking. Nat Geo also makes a paper that prints sturdy topo maps.

You can get topos and aerial photos from the web. The USGS site [http://nationalmap.gov/gio/viewonline.html] has links to 7 map servers. Microsoft Terra Server is a free one that can be a good tool. The print capabilities of Back Roads/Topo! are still better though.

Back Roads/Topo! isn't perfect but it's the best tool of the 4 mapping softwares I've purchased. If it sent maps to my Garmin GPS I would give it a 5.

Wish I could give this one less than one star. Don't waste your money with this one. If the software actually worked, it reports to do many of the things that I was looking for.

First problem -- the software claims to be compatable with Magellan's Explorists series. Tech Support (at least that's what they call themselves), says it is not.

Second problem -- the software is apparently not XP compatable. I can load the software and basically get it to work but it locks up when I attempt to save a file or change to a different sub-directory. What good is a software that will not save your work??

Multiple emails to Tech Support resulted in multiple suggestions by Tech Support to "reload' the software. Gee!!! I have to call Tech Support for that suggestion??? Apparently they have nothing to offer beyond the suggestion of reloading the software (which doesn't help).

After multiple attempts to get this software to work and multiple emails to Tech Support, I'm writing this one off as a $50 reminder to never buy a National Geographic product again.

This product was discontinued in December 2000, according to the Magellan web site. I installed the product on Windows XP Professional, and discovered that the Search features do not work. (None of them.) Magellan's technical support replied to my request for help by pointing out that it is a discontinued product which is no longer supported. They suggested buying a different, newer product. I agree. Buy something else. If you just want a map of Europe, Microsoft AutoRoute Europe 2007 works pretty well, though incomplete in at least some areas of Italy. Of course, it won't help with your Magellan GPS.

I bought the software to calculate mileages between two points. I operate a trucking business and drive myself. I want to calculate the distance say, between Raleigh, NC and Philadelphia, PA. I have a 1 gig compact flash card I bought to store the map data on. It was hopeless to even think about loading the east coast onto the memory card. I sat there for an hour highlighting the entire east coast(selecting blocks). I had 21,000 blocks selected. The desktop worked all night trying to save this file. I never did get it to work. DeLorme acts like this software is so versatile. The object of using a Handheld computer for mapping is to store mapping info and perform useful functions in the field as they may arise. This software is for someone who would rather save a small map on a pda rather than use the paper one they have or print one and take it along. I am also returning this software. It is a joke and a real dissapointment. I have a few other quotes but they would be inappropriate to post here. I hate to even rate it with one star. -5 stars would be more like it.

I have the 2005 version. It is worthless. It will not allow you to route from current GPS position to a point. And...when you try to map a shortest or quickest route, the system freezes after up to 5 minutes of "thinking" the computation. The software is only effective at routing for very short routes. Anything I tried over 10 miles would take at least 5 minutes to compute. And I'm using a newer HP Ipaq with plenty of memory. This software stinks. If you buy a GPS go with some other software.

I used to like DeLorme's products. THis one is poor at best as far as being functional. GPS takes forever to locate, map loading from desktop to PDA is not as easy as the interface would have you believe, and you cannot adjust zoom level manually.

As poor as the Pharos / Ostia package is, it beats DeLorme in functionality. I wish it had the POI and address info that DeLorme has ... better yet, I wish DeLorme had thier functionality. I am returning the DeLorme product in the morning.

I unfortunately purchased the Delorme USA 2004 Handheld Street Atlas. I can't believe Delorme would release such a third rate product.What is good. The maps are ok, some pretty good POI, but I found them to not be placed correctly on the maps, in some cases up to a mile off.What is bad. Quite a bit. The maps are slow to load, you can't re-calculate a route if you take a wrong turn (which makes the program pretty much completely worthless), Locations can't be saved on the PDA, so you need to re-type them every time you want to make a route, the app does not take advantage of the Clie long screen. Street level detail is lacking when zoomed in at the lowest level - simple things like street names. When traveling, the cursor that indicates your location is usually off - this once again depends on finding the correct zoom level. Door to Door directions is a bit misleading if you ask me. Searching is horrendous. It does not allow for saved searches, so once again, you need to type stuff over again and again.I hope the 30 day guarantee still applies. I wish I read these reviews before I bought this.

I'm returning this product. I couldn't get out the starting gate because of poor documentation. It was very unclear how to transfer maps from a PC to a Palm T3 SD Card. Other reviewers point out that you can't do address lookups on the PDA which limits the usefullness of this package. I was planning to use this software with Delorme's Earthmate GPS receiver. I'm now looking at the TomTom T3 GPS offering instead.

This product is okay when used as a reference tool on your desktop computer. However, to reiterate and reinforce other reviews it is misleading and a poor tool for your PDA. You are only allowed to save static maps to your PDA. Once the map is on your PDA you can not zoom or view street names, which makes the product highly useless on your portable device. I give the product one star only because it is usefull when used on the desktop computer. Since it's target audience seems to be the PDA user the company misrepresents the usefullness of the product on the PDA. I am very displeased. I highly recommend not purchasing this product if you intend to use it on you PDA as it is purely junk in that respect.

Not only are the maps not interactive on the PDA, as other reviewers have pointed out, but I found the maps of the South Bay to be at least five years old. A major section of Highway 85 that was completed over five years ago is not shown on the map. A close inspection of the product packaging does refer to "static" maps (maybe they mean static in time as well -- locked in at 1997!); however, I feel that the packaging is deliberately misleading so that the buyer can easily get the impression that these maps are interactive on a PDA. In any event, the fact that such old and obsolete maps were used is inexcusable.

This software seems like it was designed more for your desktop than your palm. On your desktop, it is a fully interactive map of the U.S. But you can only load a single still picture on to your palm. This product uses a simple interface on the PC to outline an area for which a map is to be generated. An image, and nothing else, is downloaded to the Palm. There is no searching by street, zooming, or anything else on the Palm.Worse still, the image capture on the PC won't display individual streets except at the few highest zooms and then the area is quite small. So, either the map on the Palm is uselessly small (a square mile or so) or it doesn't actually contain city streets. Either way, as a map, it's useless.In fairness to the product, it tries to be a trip planner more than a map. In that role, it's not quite as bad. The result is a sequence of maps, each at an appropriate zoom level. Even so, it's awkward to create and download separate maps for one trip. Okay, it's cheap. I don't expect full features. But, this product just isn't usable.

This product does not even deserve one star but you can't go any lower. Everything said by the other reviewers is true. The interface is bad. The maps are not very good compared to other programs and they print worse than they look, especially if they are rendered on a b&w laser instead of a color printer. I went back to using my 5 year old Delorme program that is vastly superior to this junk.

The PDA downloads to a Palm unit are virtually useless. For example, to see a street name, you have to click on a street which brings up a label. A few labels clutter up the screen and to get rid of them, you have to delete them. Little detail is shown and the interface is inefficient. If you pan around the map display, it does not bring in other portions of the map so that capability is useless. The only use would be to show a planned route, but not for other purposes.

How a company with the venerable name of Rand McNally could sell such garbage is beyond me. I will never waste my money on any of their PC/PDA products again.

I bought this as an add on to my Tungsten E, what a mistake. I already own Streets and Trips from MS and use it instead of Yahoo or Mapquest. Streets, how ever does not load to Palm devices. This program is terrible. The user interface is crap. In trip planning for example, there is a time estimates, but there's no profiles for freeways v. side roads. Also you can't plan a trip based on start times, a handy feature for long trips. Stops can be added as appointments, and it routes you to your stops, but you don't know how long it might take to get there. It also has no calculated road expense. Like entering the cost of the gas and your mileage and then getting a trip profile that shows you how long and how much you can plan to spend on your trip. Simple stuff like that.

The Concierge feature, which is supposed to tell you about places to eat and such works OK, but it's not very flexible. For example, if you want to eat in a particular neighborhood it defaults to the whole town.

All in all this was a huge waste of money. If you want mapping software get Streets and Trips and print the maps you need. This one is garbage.

The packaging of this product seems delibertly designed to confuse the buyer. The product suggests that it can generate directions -- what it doesn't mention is that you have to go back to your computer each time to do so. You might as well use MapQuest! Other mapping products like Mapopolis and Tom Tom can actually do this. I finally decided to buy Mapopolis because it doesn't require a Tungsten T3 like Tom Tom (it doesn't even work on the T2 or Clie units) and have been happy with my purchase. It's a shame you can't return software, because I would love to send Rand McNally back ...

Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware! I regularly rely on Internet mapping programs (e.g., MapQuest, Yahoo Maps) and thought a personal computer based PC to PAD mapping tool would allow easy interface between address book locations (throughout the USA) and surrounding points of interest and other business locations. The write-up for Rand McNally StreetFinder looked like a perfect fit . . . and if the software actually worked as advertised, it would have been. Unfortunately, from initial problems with installation, through dozens of common address locations that the software could not find or map, to partial downloads to my Tero 600 - this is one of the poorest software investments I have ever made. Save your money and stick with downloading maps from the Web.
