My DVD of The Day the Earth Stood Still was in good condition and got here in record time.

I suppose with the remake showing this is as good a time as any to watch the original classic again. In fact this timeless film demands to be watched again and again. The premise is simple and yet profound. An alien visitor that looks human arrives on Earth to give Earth's people a message about the future of mankind; however political red-tape and our own personal problems prevent him from delivering the message because he needs to assemble World leaders for it to happen and they just can't because of divisions. So instead he shows a sign by making all machinery stop around the world for a limited amount of time and in doing so this causes the military to kill him. It's an essential piece for any movie collection and the moral to the message doesn't change and still matters today. There are also a lot of religious undercurrent themes (such as bodily resurrection, miracles and signs) but in the context of a highly developed race with advanced technology that should amuse the scientifically-minded.

This movie is one of the best sci-fi's ever made, the new verse just doesn't cut it. I hate when they will take a classic and re- do it. What is the point? Been there done that are my thoughts. Back to the movie....Micheal Rennie is terrific!!!! I feel he's a under rated actor and should of been in more movies but, just the same he was perfect for this role.I agree with many of the others comments this film held you in suspense and it was due to the professional acting and directing,plus the story was great!I feel this movie will live on and continue being a classic.It is one of my most favorite movies,I've watched it many times over and was captivated every time. Can someone tell me...why are there 2 disc's?

Though released almost sixty years ago in 1951, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is a sci-fi and cinema classic that still holds up incredibly well. The film has had a huge impact upon popular culture and many elements in the film, e.g. the groundbreaking score, are now staples of the sci-fi genre.

The movie opens with worldwide warnings of an object hurling towards Earth. The object turns out to be a spaceship that lands in a field in Washington, D.C. The military, police officers, emergency personnel, and casual spectators surround the ship to see what will happen. A door opens in the spacecraft and a human-like creature walks out. The creature claims to come in peace and begins to take out a device from his suit. A fearful soldier shoots the creature and he falls to the ground wounded. From the spaceship a giant robot, named Gort, emerges and proceeds to destroy all the weapons in the area. He stops at the alien's command. The robot freezes and no one is able to move him from his place. Meanwhile, the alien is taken to a hospital. It is learned that the alien's name is Klaatu and he has come to Earth to deliver a vital message to the leaders of the world. Unfortunately, the world is an imperfect place and many of the world's leaders refuse to come to Washington, D.C. to hear what Klaatu has to say. So, he takes things into his own hands and escapes from the hospital. Very few people know what Klaatu looks like and he is able to blend in with the populace. He takes up residence at a local boarding house and takes the name of Mr. Carpenter. Klaatu attempts to complete his mission, but also befriends Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), a widowed mother, and her son, Bobby (Billy Gray).

Though some modern viewers might find THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL quaint, the film was exceptionally well done. The movie is notable for it's memorable images, i.e.Gort chasing after Helen Benson, and groundbreaking score by Bernard Herrman (the movie was one of the first to use theremins, an instrument that soon became common place in sci-fi musical scores). The movie withstood the test of time to become a classic piece of filmmaking and science fiction, it still holds up incredibly well today. Not only that, but despite not having many of the particulars that audiences seem to clamor for today: tons of special effects, excessive violence, gratuitous sexuality, etc.; the movie can still captivate an audience. In short, it's a film that people of all ages and from all walks of life can watch and enjoy today. "Klaatu barada nikto." And for those of you with a keen eye, look for Frances Bavier (best known as Aunt Bea on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW) as Mrs. Barley, one of the residents of the boarder house that Klaatu moves into.

The DVD includes all kinds of extra features including a commentary by Robert Wise, a 70-minute documentary entitled "Making the Earth Stand Still", a Movietone Newsreel that includes a spot with Gort, restoration comparatives between the original film and restored versions of the movie, still galleries, the shooting script, original theatrical trailer, and trailers for ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. I particularly enjoyed the "Making the Earth Stand Still" documentary. I learned a great deal about the movie that I had never known or thought about before. For instance, though the parallels are rather apparent, I had never picked up on the Christian allegorical elements of the film. I also found it fascinating that Lock Martin, the giant of a man who portrayed Gort, was rather feeble.

Essentially, "I Come In Peace" (aka "Dark Angel") is a great idea that was only moderately well exectued. With the exception of appearing in a religious drama, this is probably the strangest vehicle for action hero Dolph Lundgren to get himself over, and to some degree, the Swedish Superman makes it work, but even along with the passing performances of the rest of the cast and a pretty original bad guy, "Peace" ends up being forgettable due to its uninspired pacing and overall lack of action.

Jack Caine (Lundgren) is a vice cop who's earned himself notoriety for doing things his way, much to the dislike of the department. After being assigned a by-the-book partner whom he frequently finds himself at odds with (Brian Benben, "Radioland Murders"), Caine's personal war on Houston's drug cartel takes a twist when a new player on the street turns out to be a seven-foot alien who's killing innocents by way of massive heroin overdoses. Threatened by underground entities of two different worlds. Caine must watch his back at all times as he attempts to overcome an enemy who no one else believes exists.

Consider the movie a combination of "Lethal Weapon" and "Terminator" - buddy-cop flick meets sci-fi action package. The premise gets even more absurd as the story progresses, as you find out why the alien - armed with a machine pistol and an wrist-mounted razor disc - is on his killing spree, but if you can keep from being too uptight, through the power of Dolph you'll never really feel the need to question why or how all of this is happening. "Interstellar drug war? - why not?"

But while the movie has the right approach to its story, it has exceedingly little action to back it up. An uninspired car chase and a couple of short shootouts (albeit with big explosions) couldn't keep me entertained while I waited for the eventual, passable confrontation between Dolph and the alien (played by B-movie veteran Matthias Hues). I kept waiting for a decent martial arts showdown or a gunfight using the alien technology, but neither comes through satisfyingly enough. Seeing as keeping violence out of the movie wasn't the issue here (spike through the forehead, anybody?), I really can't figure out why the movie lacks the thrills the way it does.

The way I see it, "I Come In Peace" has little reason to stay on my shelf: as an action movie, it's lacking; as a sci-fi film, it's too asinine; and as anything else, it's a debacle. While Lundgren has done worse, both he and director Craig "Storm of the Century" Baxley have done better. It's a bit disappointing to see such obvious creativity be left obsolete by the lack of other essentials...but what the heck: I never liked Dolph with brown hair, anyway.

$I Come In Peace, is pretty well acted. The plot is exciting and as sci-fi goes in a pretty what if? beleivable sort of way. I Come In Peace is at times a good balance between both the funny and serious in what I think are the right ratios. There is just enough love interest without it turning into sappy syrupy muck fest. There is the tried and true action hero side kick angle going on. There are nasty stinking earthbound dope dealers born to be hated with every fiber of your being. Finally you have an alien dope dealer from outter space who wants to steal endorphins from us lowly earth creatures. To this space alien dope dealer all every man woman and child on earth are his crop to be harvested at his whim. His job is to simply supply the demand for a drug our brains make and that he has to kill people on earth well thats just the costs of doing his ugly business. I Come In Peace contains lots of action adventure, shooting, car chases and blood of both the human and alien varieties. I Come In Peace is just plain silly fun on so many levels it begs the question, WHY HASN'T WE COME IN PEACE MADE IT TO DVD YET? Why hasn't "I Come In Peace" made it to DVD when I have seen so many lesser quality or purely lame Sci-Fi movies come out on DVD. Dracula 3000 comes immediately to mind as the lamest alien \ horror hybred movie maker tripe yet to make DVD. I Come In Peace is of a level of quality so superior to Dracula 3000 that it hardly rates honest comparision. Here is hoping the studios do the right thing and release I Come In Peace on DVD. Reading the other reviewers for I Come In Peace convinces me that I am not alone in thinking I Come In Peace is both worthy of DVD status and quite marketable as well. I Come In Peace is some of Dolph Lundgren's best work. Who knows the studios might hear our requests for I Come In Peace to be released on DVD because every so often studios DO actually listen to their customers! i saw this when it first came onto vhs all those years ago, and just loved it. have been looking for the dvd, saw from the other reviews that it wasn't available in the US, so looked more, and YES!!!!!! its available in Australia FOR SURE on dvd ( i have it) BUT its called Dark Angel, so as long as you have a multizone dvdplayer get this on dvd and continue to enjoy it in all its glory. certainly one of dolphs best, good action and killer aliens!

Where is the dvd and when it does come , do not make it bare-bones with no trailer, commentary, deleted scences and all that good stuff.

This is one movie that is just as great to watch as it is to read! Ray Milland is just wonderful, in fact the entire cast is well chosen. Being in Black and White just makes it that much better. NO CGI, but interestingly good special effects. I have it on VHS, but want it on DVD.

5stars - "Too Scared" (M. Marble)

One of the things which makes this film so remarkable is the script, as other reviewers have noted. Perhaps the humour and pacing might be better understood if it were realised that Dodie Smith scripted the movie -- the writer to I Capture the Castle and The 101 Dalmatians. She was living in the States at the time to escape the bombing of England during WW2, and this was one of her projects. An amazing script, performed brilliantly by the likes of Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and the radiant (and ultimately fatally flawed) Gail Russell. And the music by Victor Young, Stella By Starlight, is incredibly evocative. A truly "must-see" film.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! One of the best ghost stories ever filmed. Why oh why is it not on DVD? Who needs special effects, loud noisy sound effects, etc. when you have great acting and a ghostly figure that sends chills up and down your spine and most of it comes from using your imagination. With all the crap that is put on DVD's, what is wrong with a studio that would make big bucks if they gave people what they want, good entertainment, good writing and great acting. I too read the book and even though it does not follow the story to a tee, it still enchances.

I first saw this movie when I was little and probably too young to understand some if it. It has been a favorite of mine for years and years. I agree with all - this is the gold standard on a scary movie. And while we all agree it sends shivers down your spine, there is such fantastic dialogue and some really, really funny comments from the cast. Ray Milland was superb, as was all the cast. And of course, "Stella by Starlight" -- the music is just the cherry on top. I have the VHS tape, but would love a DVD as well.

I felt like watching a very long and boring brazilian or mexican soap opera, covered with intense moments of love and compassion, bad acting and no plot whatsoever. It's a genuine genre-salad.

This is a superb mini series. I enjoyed watching it very much and am happy to add it to my cult classic collection. If you like a good suspense-filled thriller about the end of days that starts with a plauge and riddled with the conflict of evil vs. good--then this is the movie for you. It features the husband/wife team Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis along with Rob Lowe, Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwold, and many others.

There are forces at work in the universe that defy rational understanding or explanation. Thats why Steven King novels are so popular.

You probably already know the plot but here it goes: Superbad superflu is accidentally released (while BOC's "Don't Fear the Reaper" plays) and randomly kills all but a few hundred survivors who are immune to the superflu. The survivors come in two varieties: the good and pure souls played by likable folksy folk like a no-nonsense Gary Sinese, a deaf and dumb Rob Lowe, a flirty (but relatively innocent) daddy's girl Molly Ringwald, a wise old white guy Ray Walston, a wise old black guy Ossie Davis, and these pure souls all collectively dream of a front porch sittin' and guitar pluckin' witchy woman played by Ruby Dee who telepathically leads them to the promised land in Boulder, Colorado; and then there are the bad souls played by no-name actors who are led to Vegas by an old scratch who looks like a really bad and really coked-up eighties rock star (complete with tight jeans and mullet). The two tribes then go to war.

The good are those communitarians who care about other people; the bad are the selfish who only care about themselves. Simple as that. But the really interesting thing here is that King doesn't have nature or some supernatural force sort things out for the survivors; rather the survivors have to sort things out for themselves and some of the survivors are not certain which master they serve and which town they belong in (a very sexy Laura San Giacomo plays one of these undecideds). Ruby Dee might have special powers but these powers come and go and though they have the ability to gather people together and inspire them they cannot be relied upon to make every decision. The people must empower themselves. This is a very nice touch on Kings part.

King provides us with a great Andromeda Strain-style drama AND a clever piece of American social satire AND an interesting meditation on character, religious prophecy/determinism, and free will all in one. If you don't like Steven King because he is not highbrow enough for you well its your loss because King is a crowd pleaser extraordinaire and these characters and this plot please at an exceptionally high level.

I love the examination of various geographies and psychologies and psychogeographies. King is a master at portraying regional types without resorting to stereotypes; I guess you could say that he invents his own pantheon of American archetypes for each project and this pantheon of archetypes is one of his all-time best. Plus his diagnosis of American ills c. 1980's is right on. Eighties excess never looked so deserving of ...exactly what it gets. This film is six hours of extremely satisfying characterizations and plotting. And it provides the perfect antithesis to the "greed is good" eighties.

Only one flaw: The last hour is perhaps the weakest of the six but thats maybe because King isn't satisfied with the big comeuppance scene and tries to deliver a lesson about faith and sacrificing the one for the many that feels forced when everything else feels so natural and right. After five hours of excellent and inspired rock-fueled (I already mentioned BOC's "Don't Fear the Reaper" but Crowded House's "Don't Dream Its Over" is another song that is used to great effect) mini-series I think most people want a complication-free resolution. But thats a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent adaptation.

Highly recommended.

This is such an emotional movie. I watched the last 15 minutes of the film on demand and i didnt think that such a older film could make me cry.
I havent seen the whole film and i was hoping i could get it on DVD :( Since there is no such thing as VHS anymore, im hoping they'll make the DVD of the film soon.

This is by far one of the best films ever made and it has rarely been seen, what a shame! Do yourself a Big favor and buy, rent or barow this film. Great for the whole family. Someone PLEASE release this Amazing movie to DVD. Easily Holden and Schroeders best film!!! I know you will enjoy.

As a parent, I recommend this to all parents who want to expose their kids to life and love, animals and nature, bravery and endurance, death and survival. I also enjoyed it as an adult for its scope and depth of emotions. Especially good for kids who complain about boring road trips or "Nothing ever exciting happens" , Lets hope it makes it to DVD as I only have an off-air vhs slp recording. Ask your kids if they know what a Dingo is ? Do You ?

And yet, we get a mediocre story with okay voice acting and pretty gorgeous computer animation. The whole thing is just one big piece of eye candy. The square-faced look takes some getting used to, but it is rather nice in an artistic kind of way.

The script's terrible. The only good lines were given to the battle droids. "Why?!!!!!!!!!" (as it is getting chucked off the platform)

The changed opening was just tacky.

The battle scenes were decent, but not amazing, hence 3 stars and not 1 or 5.

this film seems to take place around the events of Episode 2, and fills in the character of Count Dooku for the viewers. Here we have sort of a backstory on him and his relationship with the soon-to-be Evil Emperor, which will eventually create the Imperial Republic.

In the feature film Episode 2, "Attack of the Clones", the Count didn't have a lot of screen time, and therefore his character was a bit under-developed. Here, we get to see his partnership with the Emperor and how it will set the stage for the events in Episode 3, "Revenge of the Sith". It helps to "fill in the gaps" that were left out of Episode 2.

I own the VHS Copie of this Movie, and I must say it is a classic. I'm very disappointed to see that people are trying to sell this movie for as much as $158.00. I think that's a little outragious and no wonder why people go out and download these movies illegally. I'd probably do the same. Also when you want to put that $ sign down at a reasonable price, then you might get a sale. Untill then, I won't Pay that much for a dvd. Period!!

I rented this movie from the store, and I like it alot at the time, Infact enough to go back and by the tape at that time. I still have the tape and I have wanted the dvd version for a while. This copy is from region 4 and therefore won't play in american dvd players, but If you know how you can get around that then this copy is fine. This european version was much cheaper then the american version. So If you know how to watch it and you like this movie this is a good alternate buy to the more expensive version.

This is a good movie. One of Rutger's best, but there ISN'T a movie out there that I would pay over 20$ bucks for, if I was a collector or not. The people on here selling this movie are just trying to make a fast buck and should be shot in the head. This movie will be on sale in the public market once again some day. When you see it at Walmart for 14$ bucks, you're really gonna kick yourself...don't let these theives steal your money.

2stars - "Please re-issue !!!!!" (Arden J. Cooper)

Fright Night II is a fun 80s vampire sequel. Admittedly, this is not as good as the original but sequels rarely are. I actually went to see this film during its limited theatrical release nearly 20 years ago and I had a blast.

Monsters HD (part of the Voom HD channel suite that USED to be carried on Dish Network but sadly Dish dropped Voom 5/2008) just got Fright Night II transferred over to HD from the original negative and that usually means that a spiffy DVD release may not be to far around the bend.

Seriously, this is fun flick with some cool make up effects and comedic gags; enough for any vampire movie lover to sink their fangs into. If you like 80s horror films than this is a MUST see.

I am just hoping for a nice wide screen transfer of the film with a 5.1 DD sound track. Is that too much to ask for? Some extras like commentary and or cast interviews would be swell too.

The Artisan DVD release from a few years ago was a joke. I remember running out to get this and was floored at the awful picture quality; honestly it is no better than a standard VHS picture. I held on to the DVD and sold it on ebay last year for 60.00 to some poor buyer in dire need of the DVD. I am not sure how Artisan can live with itself after such a dreadful release on DVD. I say off with their heads (j/k)!

Until then we are all waiting for an actual decent DVD release to come out.

First of all, both the Fright Night flicks are among some of the best vampire movies I have ever seen. They both rank up there with Salem's Lot, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Lost Boys, and many others. The only problem with Fright Night 2 is the DVD release by Artisan. The first Fright Night was released by Columbia TriStar and was a flipper disc. Although there were little to no extras on that disc the movie still had a great anamorphic widescreen transfer that still holds up. Fright Night 2 should also have gotten that but NO it didn't. Artisan treated this worthy sequel with no respect whatsoever. Despite the crimes that Artisan committed, I hope that Lionsgate rereleases the movie with a anamorphic widescreen transfer in its original aspect ratio with some good extras too. The first Fright Night should get rereleased too in a better edition. The 25th Anniversary of Fright Night is coming in two years so be prepared for it hopefully. Fright Night 2 hopefully will be released again by then The extras alone would make both of these films worth picking up. As for the movie it's still great, but shame on Artisan for what they had done.

Continuation from Fright Night..where 3 years earlier Charlie Brewster and Peter Vincent ended up killing a Vampire named Jerry along with his roommate Billy.

Charlie has now moved onto college and has gotten a new girlfriend named Alex. Here he is receiving counseling with a Dr. who's trying to convince him Vampires do not exist... During this time, he begins to undergo hypnosis.

Soon after, Charlie ends up meeting a seductress who has a deadly taste for things warm and red and she seems to know a little too much about Charlie.. Then one night she ends up coming to his room, seduces him and bites him on the neck.

After dreaming of her nightly and seeing her everywhere, Soon the seductress's identity is revealed along with her mysterious group of friends. At this point things finally begin to make sense for Charlie.

Charlie's girlfriend Alex is now starting to believe that the Vampires may actually be real and not in Charlie's imagination.

Charlie's relationships with his friend and new girlfriend begin to become broken. Charlie refuses to believe he's now a Vampire and his friends and girlfriend have to try to save him before it's too late.

There are some unanswered questions in this film- You don't get to know what happened to Amy, Charlie's first girlfriend, along with other slight disapointments.

Even though it wasn't very scary, the movie still has some pretty good special effects, decent body count, comedic thrills and good acting. The film was directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, the same man who directed Halloween 3.

Overall, It's a decent and somewhat interesting addition to the Vampire genre. Recommended if you liked the first.

3stars - "Do You Have a Taste for Terror?" (amy lynn)

Fright Night was a movie that I honestly felt ended on a pretty solid note, by that I mean that there really wasn't a need for a sequel. Nevertheless, out came Fright Night 2 just a few years later in 1989, and as you can guess it didn't quite live up to the original Fright Night.

The storyline here is not unlike wet card board: Flimsy, unstable, and weak. After a few years of therapy, Charlie has overcome his fears and paranoia, at least enough to start a new life for himself in college. However, a seductive female vampiress and her gang of fellow blood thirsty creatures have come to claim revenge on Charlie for the death of Jerry Dandridge in the previous outing. This more or less translates to "Vampires are here once again, escape and/or destroy them".

Truthfully, this sequel is very much in the same ballpark as it's predacessor, unfortunately it lacks the ingredient that was the original's the saving grace: The cast. William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowall reprise their roles as Charlie Brewster and Peter Vincent respectively, and they do maintain the great chemistry we saw previously. Unfortunately when placed amidst the rest of the bland, flat characters, they simply aren't enough to keep this movie afloat.

If you're a hardcore fan of the original, you'll most likely enjoy this sequel as well. If not, this may be one to just skip over. Thanks for reading!

5stars - "Honestly Susprised :)" (R. Glassmeyer)

I love The Return of the King a lot better than the theatrical version, because a lot of really awesome things were left out, like Saruman's cameo, more battle sequences, and a more overall satisfaction to the trilogy! It it extremely long, 250 minutes! If you need to know the story, here's my version; The film begins with how Smeagol became Gollum. Later, we see Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and King Theoden heading to Isengard to get information out of Saruman. At Rohan, Pippin sees in the Palantir that Sauron wants to strike at Minas Tirith. Gandalf and Pippin travel there to warn them. Meanwhile, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum continue their journey even closer to Mordor, where Gollum has a trap waiting for them. All the war scenes and beautiful scenery are awesome! If you love epics, wars, and fantasies, you'll love THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING!!!

5stars - "Glorious Crap" (D. King)

Before any die-hard Barker fans watch this movie, be warned that it is NOT a faithful adaptation of the story. The author wasn't allowed on set, and many changes were done to his story. As a result, Barker tried to get his name removed from the project.

Despite that rather foreboding idea, the movie isn't bad as far as bad movies go. The storyline tends to blather on and it honestly feels like it's a short story stretched out to make a longer story. I recommend it for schlock fans, but anyone looking for a real scare will be dissapointed.

This a great low-budget horror flick. Cheesy and cheap, it still boasts great chills and suspenseful horror.
Rex is at once both scary and as fake as can be (those electronic eyes!), and the ending is as stupid and cliched as it can be, but David Dukes is worth watching, if only for how nicely he fills out a pair of jeans...he was a very handsome man back then.

But under NO circumstances is it worth even 1/10th of what people are charging for the DVD ($75, are you folks insane???). Get the video tape instead.

Rawhead Rex! Hmmm let's see, I would recommend this film. The monster was great but the story was pretty weak. The story takes place in Ireland and there is some beautiful scenes but in truth it is pretty bad, but HOW CAN YOU "NOT" SEE A MOVIE CALLED RAWHEAD REX? I don't own this DVD, but I will buy it one day when I have a few bucks to waste just to have in my collection. The best thing about Rawhead Rex is the title. Go to the video store pick up the box and look at the back, if it has the same picture on the back that I saw it will tell you everything you need to know.

3stars - "Great Creature not so good story" (Kind of a Movie Fan)

In life there are 2 types of good horror film. There's the deliberately creepy that has you wondering what'll scare you next and there're the films that are so spectacularly cheesy that you find yourself wondering 'Did they actually pay people to make this film or were they just on day release from some programme?'.

I want to say that this film was creepy, scary and intimidating, but I can't. It is truely dire. I'll ignore the special effects (if you've seen the film and don't remember them, there were some, honest, at a stretch) and just mention on of my favorite scenes. In it, the monster, who looks like something that the production department at a really dire school play would reject as too cheep and tacky, manages to pull a woman through a car window and whip her blouse off at the same time. Maybe I'm easily pleased but way to go monster!

If you're a horror film buff, trust me, you'll never see anything quite like this film ever again.
