Oh I love this movie and the great lines all the way through it. It is wonderful. How can we not love Crosby and Kaye singing and dancing. It is just great fun. I think we can say the whole script as a family we've watched it so many times.

Make it a tradition you'll laugh and sigh all the way through.

I have loved this movie ever since I was a young kid. It is a classic. I watch it every Christmas season just to get me in the spirit. We rarely get snow in South Carolina, but it helps to remind me a bygone days. It's just a fun little movie with some classic actors and actresses that are gone to movie heaven...at least, I hope.

I liked the movie...bit much on the social issues though but why does it cost over 50 dollars

I watched this originally because of Angela Lansbury. She does not disappoint in this lovely, heart-warming movie and all the supporting players back her up beautifully. The story is not the core of the film but the music and dancing makes up for any small discrepancies with the script. If you like musicals you'll love this. I intend to play this every Christmas in the same way as I play the original version of "A Christmas Carol".

5stars - "Angela Lansbury IS Mrs. Santa Claus" (Brenda Roberts)

Mrs. Santa Claus is absolutely delightful. It's styled like an old time Broadway Musical and perfect for all ages. My 90 year old mother-in-law and my 2.5 year old granddaughter adored it. It was actually written by a Jewish guy and the words & music were written by another Jewish guy (Jerry Herman who wrote the scores to Mame, Hello Dolly and La Cage aux folles). In addition to the wonderful score, it has Rob Marshall's choreography. The guy who plays the stable keeper is now playing Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys. It also features a young version of the daughter from Grounded For Life who has a fantastic voice. If you have kids, you may recognize Michael Jeter (Arvo) who plays Mr. Noodle on Elmo's World. Angela Lansbury plays Mrs. Santa Claus. There's a lot of talent and good entertainment there. It's now on my list of Christmas movies to watch each year. However, my granddaughter won't let me put it away just yet.

Pude observar el espectaculo en Nueva York cuando se presentaba en Broadway el año 2000. Ya tenía el video y estaba maravillado por la excelencia y calidad en su totalidad de la puesta en escena; no puedo mas que decir que ambos espectaculos (video y en vivo) son ESPECTACULARES, quizás el sentir la música en vivo hace tener mayor emoción de estar observando la magnificencia de la danza, orden, prestancia, agilidad y música.

No es posible comparar lo vivido con lo que se ve en video, pero cualquiera de las dos cosas que ocurran primero, no demerecen lograr lo segundo.

5stars - "Asleep At The Wheel" (John Morgan)

I danced growing up [tap, jazz, ballet] but I had never seen anything quite like this. It's fantastic. Added to the specacularly talented dancing cast is superb choir, orchestra and solo vocalist music. The story this 'variety' show tells has beautiful flow. Both the line and feature dancing is mesmerizing. My whole family loves this, from my littlist niece [only three] to my grandmother. My own kids have now developed an interest in dancing, something I could never coax them into, because of this. This Show also has made me a Michael Flatly fan for life. My favorite is the flamenco duet.

Sesame Street has great content, but I am frustrated with the navigation issues (they are the same for many of the Sesame Street DVDs -- read reviews). You are forced to sit through commericals for Sesame Street, you can't fast forward or jump to the main menu. My toddler loses interest while I have to wait until the nav shows up to press the play button. Best to start the DVD and then wander back when you want to see it. A shame they messed it up -- the best kids DVDs go right to the menu.

It's all the friends we know and love but the quality of certain scenes of this DVD are grainy and lacking. My 2 yr old doesn't mind of course. Don't expect much Elmo, mainly Big Bird and every other character.

I watched this movie when I was about 5 years old. and to this day it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. I am a die hard Michael Jackson fan and anybody whom is in love with Micahel as much as I am needs to buy this movie. He is truely a great entertainer and a brilliant performer/actor. Very good story, GREAT MUSIC SEQUENCES, classic Michael Jackson at his greatest!I mean, what else could you ask for? He was the hero in this movie and is my hero in real life. Even with all the alligations surrounding him, you can't deny his emaculate influence to the music industry and the world. It has been a long time since I have seen this movie and I am so glad that I recieved the opportunity to buy a copy for myself. His legacy will continue no matter what....

This movie is not on region 1 DVD yet and STILL it has over a hundred reviews with a 4.5 star average. The explanation is because this is simply an awesome film and treasure chest from when Michael was at his peak. Well, Thriller was his peak but this is close. You don't necessarily have to be a Michael Jackson fan to like it, but being an 80s fan is obligatory. Especially given the amount of Claymation in this film.

This movie is a collection of segments. The first involves some live Michael footage. I usually don't watch this. I don't like the song, don't know what it is, but it's this wimpy feel-good "heal-the-world" nonsense.

After this the movie really kicks in. It's this montage that basically is out to show you how awesome Michael is. It's a career retrospective that, given Michael's recent actions, is kind of sad. This segment is really eerie for some reason. It's filled with strange visuals. For example, at one point the screen showing Michael footage turns into a starship and flies away. There's also some Claymation, natch.

Next there's some more weirdness involving a superfluous remake of the Bad video only with the adults replaced with children. At one point the little "Michael" holds his hand over his mouth like he forgot his line and...well this is just kinda weird. Nothing can prepare you for the absolute weirdness of the next segment. Heck, who am I trying to kid, this whole thing is weird.

Things really take a turn for the terrifying when we are introduced to claymation psychos stalking Michael! The really strange thing is they are claymation when they are shown up close, but in the long shots they are real people wearing huge heads! This segment is filled with cartoon hijinx . People getting squished like pancakes for example. Michael, being chased by the aforementioned claymation stalkers, transforms into a claymation rabbit in order to escape. This is just the first of many transformations Michael will transmogrify into during the course of this film. Michael takes to the streets and is pursued by the terrifying stalkers that take to the street as well. Michael transforms into many people at different points in the chase including Pee Wee Herman. This part of the film is used to showcase the "Speed Demon" song. His retreat vouchsafed, he takes off the rabbit mask. Much to his chagrin, the Rabbit mask becomes the rabbit. After a dance off, Michael obviously wins by using a super-duper-presto-chango-spinning-dance-tornado. Sadly, this takes place in a no-dancing-zone and Michael is given a ticket.

This next segment is basically a music video for the song "Leave me alone." This video focuses on the many rumors(and truths) that the tabloids printed about Michael. Great 80s visuals including dogs in suits, Bubbles the chimp, and Michael dancing with the elephant man's bones.

Finally we have the Smooth Criminal segment which is the centerpiece of the film. This part is a very strange tale, penned by Michael if I'm not mistaken. In this little fable, Michael and three children romp in a field when they stumble upon an eerie cave. Two of the children go in to retrieve their ball and Michael and the girl are forced to enter in order to find them. Filled with spiders and webs, the cave offers quite a perilous challenge. They stumble upon the hideout of a mob boss, played by Joe Pesche. This drug lord reveals his plan to get children hooked on drugs. I suppose this plan is yclept "Bugs and drugs" because the mobster repeats this phrase for seemingly no reason. I could make the statement that spiders are not bugs, but I'll let this go. The mob boss spots them and with what turns out to be my favorite part of the whole movie, proceeds to scream at them "DEEEEEAAAAAD! DEEEEEAAAAAD! DEEEEEAAAAAAD! I assume Michael and the kids escape because we next see Michael exiting his house where he is shot at by the mobster's army. Due to his supernatural powers, Michael is saved and, once again, takes to the streets. When he is cornered by the thug army he does what any iconic superstar does, he transforms into a car. Car-Michael escapes and the mobsters pursue him on motorcycle-back. Meanwhile, the little girl from earlier bivouacs in a decrepit on dive yclept "Club 30s." She is soon joined by the two boys from earlier. Car-Michael arrives at the seen and transforms back. Michael enters Club 30s and he must have time travel abilities as well because with a flash of light the dive is now filled with patrons in appropriate period costumes. Michael now sings Smooth Criminal." Don't prematurely assume that things are over for this segment because after the song Michael meets up with the boys that divulge the horror to Michael that the girl has been kidnapped. All that remains is a spider covered teddy bear. Michael, undoubtedly pissed, goes off in search of her only to be surrounded by the mobster's army. Do you think things are over for Michael? I hope not because you've obviously forgotten that in this film Michael has supernatural powers. As the drug lord begins to inject smack into the little girl Michael uses a scream-attack that shatters all the glass within a 50 mile radius. Awestruck, the mob-army can only stand stoically as Michael undergoes yet another transformation. He turns into a robot like being that continues to utilize the scream-attack and uses missiles and a secondary weapon. Cumulonimbus clouds form in the backdrop and Michael now unleashes his tertiary weapons system: a double cannon that protrudes from his stomach. After all his goons are history, the mob boss takes flight. He wasn't trying to escape however, instead he wishes to unleash his most powerful weapon at Michael: a huge particle beam cannon! All this time Michael has been transforming into his final and ultimate form: Starship Michael!!! He unleashes his coup de grace beam attack and the mob boss is blown to smithereens!

With this amazing segment finished there's really no reason to continue watching. Nothing in this review is made up, it's all in the movie. If you have not seen this movie, don't wait for the DVD, get the VHS post-haste!!!

when moonwalker first came out...and just like millions of teens like me, i had to go and buy the vhs tape which i treasured. but i have a feeling that moonwalker won't be on dvd for the u.s. anytime in the near future. and who can blame michael?? i'm sure in other countries, his public image is a lot better than america when we have people like nancy grace trashing him on a daily basis. but for 1988, this tape kicked [...]!! and you def. got your $$ worth...but i would love to see it on dvd for the rest of us.

5stars - ""MOONWALKER" Not On DVD?" (Horace W. Morris Jr.)

I watched Moonwalker when I was a kid and loved it, I thought it was great then and I think it's great now in my 20s, you get way more violence watching Yu-Gi-Oh than with Moonwalker, plus you get to see Michael at it's best era, with videos that are probably among the best in music video history, with Smooth Criminal being a true masterpiece. Hopefully we'll see it on DVD soon, and if you can get it for your kids, do so, if not, get it for yourself. I must say that it's not a very coherent movie, it's more like pieces of different things but it's not like you're getting it for the story line.

5stars - "Scrooge" (Noreen)

One day I skipped my classes in high school and went along on a field trip with some other part of the school to see this version of Scrooge. This was back in the early '70's. Although the other kids were not all that impressed, I fell in love with this movie. Even the music has stayed with me all these years. It's a Scrooge version that they NEVER show on television. And I think it's got everything that the other Scrooge movies do, and much more.... I always get choked up at the end as Scrooge (Albert Finney) has his epiphany and gets his freak on with the whole Christmas thing.. It's the only Scrooge movie I care about....

Stupendous in every way--directed and mounted brilliantly by the great Ronald Neame...Finney is perfection as SCROOGE...Briccuse came up with some very memorable songs..casting is perfect...moves along and is always a joy to behold--one of the last great musicals of all time..if you don't like this movie, you don't get any more Chistmas pudding...ever!

The American Ballet Theatre DVD has great music and dancing but it was not produced for HD in 1977. If picture quality is important, I suggest purchasing the more modern 2008 San Francisco ballet production. The SF choreography has far more charm than the dark ABT version. Nevertheless, one cannot top Kirkland's dancing with Baryshnikov.

4stars - "Not for HD" (Bullwinkle)

First of all, as a dancer from a family of dancers, I really don't care about how/why/costume/sound/story/etc - I will never tire of watching Baryshnikov dance. Paired here with a prima ballerina who can keep up with him, as Kirkland can, it's even better. Just for the sake of the dancing, I love this rendition.

Second, I do realize the interaction between Nutcracker/Clara/Drosselmeier can seem a bit twisted, but when watching this as a young adult, I figured Uncle Dross was just getting upset because Clara was falling for this fantasy guy. As an adult, I believe it can still be argued that he is protective and is trying to wake Clara from a dream that has gotten out of control. She doesn't want to leave the dream, or the prince, and he is trying to help her. It doesn't have to be smutty, but you can see how that interpretation can be made.

On the downside, the original recording in 1977 had its flaws that can't be or haven't been "fixed" - the music can sound flat (hard to do with Tchaikovsky!) and the focus is blurry and bit blue-tinged. But it's always been that way, even years ago on TV, so it doesn't bother me (I've loved this version for a long time).

If you love the dancing or Tchaikovsky's entire score and have no strong feelings for Baryshnikov, this probably isn't the version for you. But if you want to see some ballet that will leave you breathless, or just love Baryshnikov, this is the one!

Is the best word to describe it. I was obsessed with this ballet when I was a little girl. I had it on VHS and completely wore out the tape. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I decided to search for it on Amazon and was so thrilled to find it. I bought it instantly and now I watch it about twice a week. There's just something about it that I can't get enough of. I'm going to see the stage version next week for the first time since I was five and I'm nervous that I've spoiled myself with Baryshnikov!

5stars - "Magical!" (Amanda C. Bates)

I am a dancer and ballet is my favorite type of dance. I have seen dozens of different Nutcrackers over the years, from the traditional to the avand garde. Nothing can compare with this version. Baryshnikov shines. And Kirkland is a most sensuous Clara/Marie. Their duet at the end replaced the traditional "sugarplum fairy" dance. But, what a duet! I never get tired of watching it. A true Christmas treasure.

5stars - "Absolutely Exquisite" (Vimala Nowlis)

Perhaps the best interpretation of "The Nutcracker" ever made. Baryshnikov's finest hour. And as even the most ballet-ignorant know, that bar's set pretty high.

I have seen Mikhail Baryshnikov dance in the much-praised chick-flick "The Turning Point." And I have seen him dance his own interpretation of "Don Quixote." Good. Great, even. But not as much as fellow Russkie ballerino Nureyev's stab at "Quixote." And I have seen much more of him dancing. The man defies gravity, as well as many other laws. A ballet dancer, in the country of America, has been treated like a movie star. But this may very well be his best work, artistic-wise.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is man who hardly needs an introduction, as he is a man who is synonymous with ballet. The man is a household name, Baryshnikov is at his best here, which is more than difficult, even for him. Celebrated USA ballerina Gelsey Kirkland (who was a regular partner and even girlfriend of dear Misha at the time) actually proves to be a credible match. And even takes it to a higher level than he does in HER solo scenes.

This was the first "Nutcracker" I've ever seen. I have seen several interpretations of "The Nutcracker" since then, and this one still stands as the best of the lot. There are no real children in this cast. The children's roles are played by adults in adolescent-looking wigs.

The idea to make this a movie rather than a live stage piece kind of works. It allows for more visual effects than a straight live piece would have.

There is a moment where Ms. Kirkland dances a solo all by herself, that sequence actually left be breathless. When she shakes her pointed feet like bells, the music jingles in pitch-perfect sync. She doesn't seem to be following the music at all. The music seems to be following her.

It's so beautifully and perfectly done, that as someone who takes ballet and has danced on the stage, that it actually hurt to watch.

The day that I can move as gracefully and exquisitely (on her worst day, I mean) may never come. Kirkland actually, in that one scene, manages to steal the movie away from Baryshnikov. Baryshnikov's leaps, turns, jumps and pirouettes are as breathtaking as always, and somehow never seem to get old. Misha's striking presence and Peter Pan-like mobility just.. well, makes you want to get up and dance. Or just jump around. He doesn't so much leap as much as soars.

Baryshnikov puts some little touches of humor here and there. There's a lovable old man at the Christmas Party who attempts to dance and hurts himself, as well as a toy soldier who stubs his toe. Baryshnikov has always seemingly had the soul of a child and the heart of a clown.

The Arabian Coffee Dance has been deleted for running time, I'm sorry to say. As has Mother Gigogne. Not to mention The famed "Waltz Of The Snowflakes" is a powerhouse, the ballet corps sway to the music so beautifully, for the briefest moment, we actually forget about Baryshnikov and Kirkland.

Is Baryshnikov trying to give himself more screen time, Clara or the ballet itself? Alexander Minz proves to be invaluable as a supporting player in the role of Drosselmyer. I was reminded of Fred Astaire. He moves around with his long, willowy limbs in a way that seemed almost inhuman. I seriously doubt ever got half the credit he deserved throughout his life.

He had an effective, amusing cameo in "The Turning Point." Baryshnikov continues to prove time and time again what we already know--the greatest ballet dancer of any generation will always be a Russian.

The choreography is riveting, some of the best I've ever seen. Although, the honor for "World's Greatest" go to "Singin' In The Rain." Maybe the Russian could put dances together now. He's reportedly a great teacher of dance as well.

While many of the special-effects look a bit outdated, it remains a riveting experience. After all, most ballet movies are just filmed dancing and this one takes the effort to actually be something of a movie.

The acting is not much, nor is there as much plot as is traditional, a as this "Nutcracker" focuses more on the dancing and music. The pyrotechnics (the dancer's rapidly-moving muscular limbs and the way they and the music truly gel).

Despite Mr. Baryshnikov in the title role and given prominent first billing, the star of "The Nutcracker" is Gelsey Kirkland as Clara, as this is all Clara's story.

Mnay movies have attempted to translate this legendary dance story to the screen, usually with disastrous results. For example, the mistake the 20th Century Fox movie "George Balanchine's The Nutcracker" made was if they were going to made the ballet into a movie, they should have done something for the movie that they couldn't do for a live production. Alas, they did not. It moved so slowly and the whole movie was so badly-lit, it looked like somebody boot-legged the whole thing with a camcorder.

The solo duets are just as enjoyable. The dancers, are in fact, so good that they almost threaten to outdo the leads.

It's a beautiful story, more with flair and style in it's depth. It's a revised fairy tale.

When Misha and Gels prance together, their body movements almost in perfect parallel... it's beautiful and breath-taking. They seem to be connected internally somehow. These are two people brought-en together by dance. It's every little girl's dream... and that's exactly what the "Nutcracker" should be.

The 1968 animated feature film (limited animation) brought the psychedelic style of art director Heinz Edelmann - not Peter Max - to Pepperland, a Yellow Submarine, Blue Meanies and the Fab Four.

United Artists and Apple Records digitally restored the audio and cleaned the original film negative to deliver phenomenal clarity and colors, which makes this DVD an artistic masterpiece. Directed by George Dunning, the project was initially a means for the band to fulfill its film commitment to UA. The Beatles were not scheduled to appear (actors imitated their voices), but made a cameo appearance in the final scene due to being pleased with the production of the film.

This is not just a classic slice of pop culture, but a timeless journey onto a rainbow of incredible creativity.

What a shame,it seems that movie companies only release Beatle classics on a limited term!!! I'm sure that a 40th Anniversary Edition might easily be on the way but I don't know!!! I'm glad I bought a copy of it when it was in print,because it is no out of print and fetching high dollars on auction sites such as Ebay!!! This WAS a great release from MGM,nice vibrant Widescreen(although it was non-anamorpic,it was'nt to bad sice it was 1.66!)transfer,the soundtrack was awesome too!!! And this disc had some choice extras,although not overstuffed with them!!! Let's hope that with Blu Ray here,maybe a reissue is in the near future,as well as a new DVD,well,lets keep our fingers crossed!!! Is it All To Much to have this great film back in print to enjoy,or will the Blue Meanies keep it locked in the vaults in Pepperland along with Let It Be,that has NEVER seen an official DVD release,lets hope it's soon,not When I'm Sixty-Four,come on All You Need Is Love,MGM,make fans happy again,cause like it says in the film a minute is a very long time!!! Cheers!!!

I didn't knock off one star because of the blackface number... but mostly because of the sort of coldness of both Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire... I turned in late and couldn't figure out what the 15 days were supposed to be--the 15 days a year Jim is willing to work. We had a bit of a tiff about that, and one of us said that the fifteen days included one day on either side of the major holidays--one day to rehearse, one day to perform, another day to take down those lavish sets. So that really there were only 5 holidays worth worrying about... And that for 2 of them. Lincoln's birthday and Valentine's Day, only one day separated them, so that it would be a rehearsal day and a take-down day all at once. And that would throw the calculations off seriously. Neither could we figure out if New Years Eve and New Years Day were both holidays in the movie or not. You know that big calendar they keep showing--the one in which the turkey jumps back and both between the 20th and the 27th of November?

How many holidays are there in Holiday Inn? Christmas, New Years, Lincoln's Birthday, Valentines ("Be Careful, It's My Heart), Washington's Birthday ("I'd tell you you were ugly, but I cannot tell a lie"), Easter Parade, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas again, and New Years Eve. Somebody said that as the Fourth of July got two songs, "Let's Say it with Firecrackers" and "The Song of Freedom," maybe the latter was really for Memorial Day or some other holiday like Veterans Day. And what about the "Happy Holidays" song? Was that just for Christmas or did Bing and Marjorie Reynolds sing it anytime anybody came to the Inn?

I wish there was a true special edition in which the special features included the long lost deleted scenes like when they celebrate Halloween ("Spooky"), Arbor Day ("Green Leaves"), April Fools Day (a solo for Marjorie Reynolds perhaps, called "Fooled Me Once, Shame on You, Fooled Me Twice, Shame on Me.") And there could be some Jewish holidays in there too (or maybe that's what "Happy Holidays" is for). I do like Marjorie Reynolds: what's her story anyhow? People say she's "serviceable" but she's much more than that. She's instantly likeable and her acting is so sincere she puts the boys to shame, like they're just playing with her. And the one scene where she drives a certain party into the lake is both hilarious and chilling.

4stars - "Spooky, Fooled Me Once, Green Leaves, etc." (Kevin Killian)

First, an important disclaimer. I am not a big fan of the classic Hollywood song and dance films of the 30s and 40s. While I respect the great talent of the performers of this era, this genre is simply not my taste. But because my wife enjoys great dancing, I will watch a film of this sort from time to time.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed "Holiday Inn" given my natural interests. I sometimes find the story line of these classic musicals to be a little on the thin side, but this plot, while still slight, held the musical numbers together well. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire portray two entertainers dueling for the same girl. Crosby woos with his voice and Astaire courts them with his dancing. I was pleasantly moved by Crosby's singing, especially of "White Christmas," and was astonished, even as a non-dancer, by Astaire's marvelous moves. The supporting actors and actresses are also classy and capable.

This film deserves its status as a classic and is a great choice for the Christmas season or for any time during the year.

I must say that when i was younger (not too long ago since i am only in my 30's now), black & white movies were something i would never even consider watching. Then i met my wife. She got me started with movies like the Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. Then i caught this movie on TMC one night and the next day i had to go out and buy it. Not excatly an all out Christmas movie, but i feel the need to watch it every Christmas anyway. Did not get this one from Amazon, but still a great movie. Fred Astaire is an amazing performer and you need to open your mind to new things if you have never considered watching a movie like this. It is rare to find a perfomance like this and getting rarer by the day. There is no one to fill the shoes of Fred Astaire or even the more modern Gregory Hines these days. We are stuck with silicone implants and dubbed over tracks made for lipsyncing to...

Add this to your collection because 20 years from now your grandchildren will be watching Britney Spears videos thinking that was the best talent America had....

The more I see Bing's Dumbo ears, the more I think Hollywood sold out. Bing sounds great but he looks bad. Would Rosemary Clooney really want to be with a old guy like Bing? Throw in the song, "Abraham",
and you have a true wonder. So you have the typical Black cook and her two" cute" kids

Watch this movie and then think about White Actors painting their face Black. Ask this question of yourself, did any Black actor's do, "White Face",?

I looked forward to the Andy Williams CHRISTmas shows every year growing up,watching Andy and his Brothers and parents,especially his kids.This DVD brings back the great old days.
The singing is fantastic,especially Andy singing my favorite CHRISTmas song,"Oh Holy Night."I also loved watching him with his brothers,they sounded so fantastic together,and the Osmonds are also featured on this Disc.
If you want to bring back thoes great times growing up,and showing your kids what CHRISTmas was all about,this DVD is perfect.

Remember when the Holiday Season on TV ment the variety specials with Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams? I miss them. All you see now are those sappy holiday romance stories or the animated kiddy features. This DVD is great and includes musical numbers with Andy and the Williams brothers. And the Osmonds are a scream. Donny can't be more than 5 years old in the earliest scenes. If you own White Christmas and watch it every year, this holiday DVD is for you.

That made it a little disjointed and harder for my kids to watch than if an entire show had been chosen. Still the adults did enjoy the stroll down memory lane!
