Sesame Street has great content, but I am frustrated with the navigation issues (they are the same for many of the Sesame Street DVDs -- read reviews). You are forced to sit through commericals for Sesame Street, you can't fast forward or jump to the main menu. My toddler loses interest while I have to wait until the nav shows up to press the play button. Best to start the DVD and then wander back when you want to see it. A shame they messed it up -- the best kids DVDs go right to the menu.

It's all the friends we know and love but the quality of certain scenes of this DVD are grainy and lacking. My 2 yr old doesn't mind of course. Don't expect much Elmo, mainly Big Bird and every other character.

I looked forward to the Andy Williams CHRISTmas shows every year growing up,watching Andy and his Brothers and parents,especially his kids.This DVD brings back the great old days.
The singing is fantastic,especially Andy singing my favorite CHRISTmas song,"Oh Holy Night."I also loved watching him with his brothers,they sounded so fantastic together,and the Osmonds are also featured on this Disc.
If you want to bring back thoes great times growing up,and showing your kids what CHRISTmas was all about,this DVD is perfect.

Remember when the Holiday Season on TV ment the variety specials with Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams? I miss them. All you see now are those sappy holiday romance stories or the animated kiddy features. This DVD is great and includes musical numbers with Andy and the Williams brothers. And the Osmonds are a scream. Donny can't be more than 5 years old in the earliest scenes. If you own White Christmas and watch it every year, this holiday DVD is for you.

I didn't like this DVD as well as the other Andy Williams special I purchased this year. This one is a colelction of excerpts from various shows instead of being a cohesive show in and of itself. That made it a little disjointed and harder for my kids to watch than if an entire show had been chosen. Still the adults did enjoy the stroll down memory lane!

Outstanding sets, songs, music and guests. Lots of rare footage of the Osmond Brothers appearances, Bob Hope, Andy's kids and brothers.

You don't find a lot of Christmas DVDs that you want to watch more than once. This is an exception. Can't say enough good things about it.

This is my favorite Christmas movie ever. I first saw it when I was about 8 and what I loved about it then, the scenery, story, etc. are still what I love about it today. The attention to detail in the buildings at the North Pole is incredible. I still try to find this movie on the TV to watch each Christmas, but it is more and more difficult to do so. I don't understand why they can't release this modern classic on DVD for region 1 players. I would love to add this to my collection and not have to worry about recording it on the DVD or trying to catch it on TV.

I fell in love with this movie when I was a kid and 20 years later, I still love it! I have missed it on TV for many years and would love to own it in DVD. After checking out Amazon and reading the reviews of others, I did a little research and found the following places where you can buy the DVD that works in all regions or NTSC (specifically for North American video players). I'm not vouching for these retailers and I haven't purchased this DVD yet, but wanted to put the information out there for others who may be interested. I wish Amazon would make it available! (you can also do a google search of your own to look for more retailers - that's how I found these)

This is an awesome Christmas movie. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid. I got the VHS last year and I still get the same feeling I did when I was a kid whenever I watch it.

With all of the crap being made today, this is a great movie to watch with kids and grandkids.

I hope they come out with a Region 1--may next year for the 25th anniversary.

The only question I've wondered since I first saw this, what does C.B. stand for?

With over 1500 other reviews on Amazon for this DVD set, why write another one?

Because it's a great series, that's why!

OK -- confession time: I'd never been a fan of "chick" authors such as Jane Austen, but boy, was I mistaken! Friends at work turned me on to this series when it first appeared on A&E, and I was immediately sucked into the story. And what a great story it is!

The adaptation remains very faithful to the novel (a fact which I discovered when I read the book after I'd seen the series), so much so that a pivotal scene that occurs *exactly* half way through the book also occurs *exactly* half-way through the series.

Colin Firth plays a Darcy that I don't believe shall ever be equaled (a role that he seems to have reprised, time and again, in later films), and the entire cast, from top to bottom, is great. That, coupled with set and costume design that seems to authentically replicate the period, gives the series a lushness and depth that is a pleasure to watch.

The series stands up well to multiple viewings (always a sign of a great film). In fact, it's one of my favorite things to watch during the Christmas Holidays when it's cold and wet outside.

Anyway -- it's well worth five stars, and if anyone has not yet seen it (hard as that is to believe), my advice is: get thee to the video store!

I must utilize movies as a visual aide supplement to help them connect with the characters, setting, dialogue... I strongly recommend using this dvd to support your curriculum to teach on all levels of student learning (auditory, kinesthetic, visual).

The only thing that would make this DVD set better is if there were extras, but I'm sure they are not available.

I watched this mini series in the 80s. I loved it then and even more so now. This movie is a classic. As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.

This series is so helpful to recall the chronological order of all of the things once learned in history classes at school. Hoever this series not only gives the facts, but adds a personal element to it by interviewing average citizens who remember the historic events recalled. By no means is this your "boring documentary". I have seen the series several times, and I still learn new things, and I still moved everytime, at the strength of our country and the tremendous blessing it is to live here.

As a couple of other reviewers indicated, this video set does a fair job hitting on all the major events affecting America in the twentieth century, but can't resist dwelling on all the ills - especially those of the Reagan era. The low point was Martin Scorcese's appraisal of the 1980's as being the "me decade" full of greed. Who made him an authority and why doesn't anyone in the media ever see the 1990's the same way, when the US was even more prosperous?

DON'T confuse this set with the other 12-volume set, "The Century," which addressed broader, global issues. THAT set is FAR SUPERIOR to "America's Time," especially the episodes on Hitler's rise to power, Lindberg's crossing the Atlantic, and the fall of South Vietnam.

This is an adorable DVD special addition with a cute shimmery cover. My only qualm was that the package arrived with a very large dent in the side (I used Amazon free super-saver shipping so I guess I shouldn't be surprised). Not really a problem for solid objects, but if there had been breakable items they would not have survived the poor handling.

The cast in this film was not the best, don't get me wrong George C. Scott, Jack Lemmon, & Hume Cronyn are wonderful in this movie, but the rest of the cast was not very good at all. As for it being to "COLORFUL" it had to many African Americans and they were very rude to white cast in the film. I think your best sticking with original from '57 with Henry Fonda. If your just buying it for the reasons I did for George C. Scott, Jack Lemmon, & Hume Cronyn you'll like their acting only they are the only 3 good preformers in the film.

3stars - "A little to "COLORFUL!"" (Brock Stevens)

'57 is a classic par excellence, but '97 does offer some interesting new features. I use both of the films as a means of processing a vast array of psychological concepts while working with first and second year college students. When I first stop the '97 version, I ask students if they heard anything at the onset of the film. There is a clever insertion of the line, "I'm gonna' kill you," as the sound track presents us with noise of a passing El train. Many of my students can't identify what the voice said, and some don't even remember hearing it.

The '97 cameras pan the room differently during the preliminary vote and do not allow us to see the effect of group conformity to the norm as it is registered in '57 version. The guilty vote is not as polarized as it may superficially appear: the hands of #5, #6 and #11 are raised after some pause, and #9 lifts his up slowly as he notices all hands are in the air. He doesn't see Fonda on his extreme right.

I like the dynamic presented with the inclusion of Afro-American jurors. When #1's (Courtney Vance) leadership is belittled by #10, he shows more confidence than Martin Balsam in the '57 edition. Balsam betrays rationality and retreats to an oral regression which includes nail-biting and a pouting withdrawal.

Jack Lemmon (#8), in the '97 version, starts out very slowly but seems to gain a head of steam with the new dialogue regarding others who might have had a motive for killing the father. He persisted at a higher energy level the rest of the way. When #7 said the boy "deserved" to die, Lemmon came back with a very effective counterargument about those who have gone to the gallows only to have some one else confess to the same crime years later.

Mykelti Williamson (#10), in the '97 version, added a powerful dimension when he accused Ossie Davis (#2) of being just like all those people his age who allow the white intellectuals to manipulate them. His anti-Latino invective later on was so effective as to make one sick. In fact, Mykelti himself, felt great psychological stress enacting this role.

This may reflect my bias, but I liked the idea of the psychiatric testimony. Edward James Olmos (#11), in the '97 version, shone ably in his interpretation of the merits of such testimony. To think of the primal crime (patricide)does not mean that you have followed through on the thought. He went on to say that if all of the jurors took the same battery of tests, perhaps one or two of them might show the same capability.

'97 does not include the photograph of #3's estranged son which heightened his emotional responses. In the cathartic ending, Lee J. Cobb tears the picture in pieces as he lets loose emotionally.

I could go on ad nauseam. Suffice it to say, I prefer both.

5stars - "Will it be '57 or '97? Both perhaps?" (Robert R. Johnson)

Watching this 1997 version of 12 ANGRY MEN recently, I was struck by the fact that four of the 12 actors in key roles here have since passed away. That has absolutely nothing to do with the film's quality, of course (or nothing directly to do with it), but it is striking that key members of this impressive cast--and of course, I'm referring to Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Hume Cronyn and Ossie Davis-- have gone on to that jury box in the sky.

As I say, the fact that these great actors have all died within the past decade is not a direct reflection on the film itself. But it does raise at least one issue that a previous reviewer has noted: namely, the question of the cast's relative age in comparison to the cast of the 1957 classic movie version. Jack Lemmon was 72 when he played Juror #8 in this version. In the original film version, Henry Fonda was a comparatively youthful 52 when he portrayed the same character in 1957. Lee J. Cobb was all of 47 when he took on the part of Juror #3. George C. Scott was pushing 70 when he assayed the role.

In Scott's case, the role of the pained father--alienated from his own son and transferring some of his rage onto the accused--rings a bit false. He's fine until his climactic moment when he makes this association painfully clear (to all three viewers who hadn't already guessed), but at that very point, his performance unravels. Yes, there are 70 year old men estranged from their 30-something children, but one might expect the rage to be somewhat more muted by that point. Scott's wounds seem almost too fresh in this production.

Lemmon's relative maturity is not without its own problems. He is almost too sage. One is never quite sure whether he is really a tentative, but tenacious truth seeker, stubbornly hashing his way through the case's many inconsistencies, or whether he's actually a fine legal mind with a grand strategy that slowly and masterfully unfolds.

The obvious attempts to update the film's action are more annoying than enlightening. It's significant that this time out, the jury is racially mixed (and ethnically too, since two of the jurors are at least vaguely European). And depending on your point of view, it may be a sign of progress overall that African-American characters can be as perceptive or as flawed as any of their cohorts. (One even turns out to be bigoted in the extreme against the Hispanic accused.) But by 1997 could you really get away with having a jury without a single woman on it? No, it wouldn't be the same if the film were called 10 ANGRY MEN AND A COUPLE OF WOMEN WHO AIN'T TOO HAPPY EITHER. On the other hand, all the little updates thrown into the mix (including the presence of a female judge) do nothing to alter the fact that the movie is fundamentally anachronistic from the get-go.

3stars - "12 Moody Guys" (Gregor von Kallahann)

Listen, the actors performing here are all outstanding. The problem is that the script was written for a group of much younger men.

I mean, come on! George C. Scott in Lee Cobb's original role does that corny, over-acted ending about being stabbed with the knife by his son - he looks like he's in his '90s here -
What's his son? Seventy? Get over it, George! It's just ridiculous.

Forget this film - see the play or buy the original film.

2stars - "cast is too damn old!" (Jonathan P. Zipkin)

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers who give the nod to the original version over this remake, but, all in all, it still is a decent film that is a study of the justice system. While not as in depth as the original, this is a worthy remake.

When a young man is on trial for murder, it is up to a jury of twelve men from different ethnicities and backgrounds to decide his fate. When one juror (Jack Lemmon) boldly takes the stance that he believes the man is not guilty, it sets off fireworks and arguments in the jury room. Each man is given their chance to defend their stance, and, as they fight over whether the young man killed a person, some begin to see the errors of their judgment. Highlighted by an all-star cast, there are many well-known actors who are members of the jury, including Tony Danza, George C. Scott, and Edward James Olmos.

The film's subject probably relates to anyone who has had to serve on a jury, and knows the personality clashes that exist within the jury room. What I like about this film is that is really speaks to the idea that one person can have a huge impact in the court of law or in any part of life if they continue to trust their instincts or beliefs. Juror 8 doesn't waver in this regard. Another poignant aspect of the film is the idea of what is fair as far as the jury system goes. As depicted in the film, a few of the jury clearly just wants to "get the case over with" so they can go on with their regular lives. Perhaps one of the subtle messages evoked from 12 Angry Men is that maybe there are flaws in the jury system that need to be addressed.

Twelve Angry Men relies much on dialogue to create suspense (rather than action), and for the fact that they are able to capture it (in this version and in the original), I commend it. Almost the entire film takes place in the jury room with the jurors. If you need big explosions, drive-by shootings, or dramatic car chases, or blood and guts, then this might not be a film for you. This is a film that caters to dealing with the justice system, and the jurors one by one try to understand the psychology and motives of someone accused of murder.

This is a review of the mini series and not of the DVD or format. It is excellent and one of the best mini series ever on television--a standout. Hopefully, more choices and formats will become available to the general public so thay can watch this engrossing production, in its full and un-condensed and un-edited version. It is Deep-Southy in location and studies both the noble and also sinister attributes of three generations of police chiefs in a Southern family, Southern Georgia town. All of the players are at their best, Heston, Carridine, Collins, Williams, et. al.

I loved this mini series when it was first aired. I later received the 2 tapes edition as a gift, but I was disappointed that many of the scenes were cut.

I had read the book a few years after it was published.

The story is about three police chiefs over a 38 year span in which brutal murders are committed. This movie also deals with racial relations in the south during these different time periods.

The actors were all terific, especially Billy Dee Williams and Wayne Rogers. Both were exactly as I pictured their characters.

The ending was especially touching when Billy Lee discovers that Tyler Watts is really Joshua Cole, a boyhood friend long lost. This ending is different from the book, in which Billy Lee never learns who Tyler Watts is.

Parts of this is sad, when Will Henry Lee and Marshall Peters are killed. This is a tear jerker.

Keith Caradine was perfect in the role of Foxy, who was a very menacing and scary guy.

I hope to see this on DVD soon. Does anyone know why this is not available? If so, please enlighten me. I am tempted to buy a region 2 player, since that particular DVD is available.

I am hoping that the DVD will be released soon as originally aired without any cutting out of scenes.

5stars - "A Great Mini Series" (Caroline Cherie)

I first watched this tv mini when I was about 11 years old. It was scary to me. I always held my hands in front of my face when old Foxy Thunderburk would come on screen. I remember thinking about how old Sonny was so mean to people,especially blacks. I was glad when Foxy buried him and his motorcycle. I loved the acting as well. I am a great fan of the first and third chief, as well as Charles Heston. I have watch "Chiefs" twice in my life time. It has been over 13 years since I have watched it. I would love to own it this Christmas 2008. I'm going to start looking for it. I want the extended version.

Like others, I taped the miniseries CHIEFS when first broadcast and have enjoyed watching it ever since; in fact, last year I burned a copy of my worn old VHS tape into disc since it appears it won't be released anytime soon in region 1. I would suspect there is a contractual reason [perhaps Heston himself? I understand he always thought he gave one of his best performances in the flm...] it has not yet been released.
CHIEFS is one of those rare films whose story not only spans decades- but which laso stands up well even today with its topical subject matter.
