I had previously had this movie and lost it....I really enjoyed the plot but still can't see what good that it added to the movie to have wilford brimley telling this as a story....the story tells itself.....i think that if this could have really happened in this day and age, that it doesn't need someone narrarating it...it just seemed to detract from the plot itself, otherwise i would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a western yarn with a little twist

Last Of The Dog Men ranks right up there with Dreamkeeper for me. This is a beautiful film to look at.With a great story and musical score. Like a great book,it grabs you from the beginning and carries you through till the end. The acting by all,is superb,as well.

How it treats the issue of this last surviving tribe is especially respectful and satisfying.

Once viewed,the scenery will never be forgotten. I don't believe anyone could be disappointed in this film.

All I will say is "I LOVE THIS MOVIE"!! I am so glad to have found it online! I haven't seen it since it first came out and I was a kid. I have always wanted to find it on video to buy! It is just a western romance about a cowboy's heart ache and his search for his runaway wife. But I won't tell you much more (like other reviews). I don't want to ruin it for you. Other people are making this mistake of telling the ending, such as who kills who and when and so forth. HELLO!! Don't ruin the ending!!!

What can I say- this movie's more fun than you might think... despite the dreadful performance by Morgan Fairchild (far from devine)!! Where are the Petticoat Junction girls when you need them? As always- Willie's cool and collected and he manages to keep a straight face whenever Ms. Fairchild dribbles her lines! Why the producers failed to cast Katharine Ross or, perhaps, the sexiest woman in the film- "Cindy" (Baytowns Miss Marinell Madden... who eventually offs Mr. Nelson while wearing a wonderfully campy wig!) is beyond me, but I always enjoy this movie whenever I catch it, and will long for a DVD of out takes whenever somebody sees fit! Just checking for you!

This film is still not on dvd, and it should be. This movie is really a guilty preasure, in that, it is all the things a movie should not be. Historically inacurrate, and all Hollywood from the get go. But, that was the way it was until audiances became too sufficiated for bad directing. Despite all that, I love this movie, because of those reasons. The truth would only paint Tracys character much differently, and we might end up hating the hero more then the indians. There are many lines in this film that are memorable. My favorite is when Tracy says "If she gives you any trouble, stick her in the rump with a bannoet." My second favorite line was so laughable I still laugh as I'm about to write it. After the indian maccacre is over Tracy is trying on the local foot wear and in an angry fit says, "Dont any of these indians have man size feet"? In case any of you don't get the connection, maybe you noticed that Spencer Tracy was not shown standing next to any of those indians to clostly, because of his size, or lack of it. I don't know his foot size exactly, but I am pretty certain he could fit into one of my wife's tennies. Now I could say, I'm no film critic, but the fact is, I use to be twenty five years ago. My formula for a good film was, and still is "ENTERTAINMENT". This movie hits the mark, expecially back in the forties era. The ideas surrounding the carnage were as best, suggestive, especially when describing the indians at their worst. Now, imagine a remake with an obvious "R" rating. It stifles the mind, doesn't it?

4stars - "DVD?" (Right Stuff)

I first saw this picture when I was 10 or 11 years old (shortly after it was released). I thought it was great. I had not, at that time, read Kenneth Roberts' book, so I didn't realize how much they had changed it in order to make the movie. After reading the book (shortly after seeing the movie), I enjoyed the book even more. Re-seeing the movie at intervals through the years I have not felt that it was diminished by the changes made for the movie.
My "DVD and Movie Guide" (Martin and Porter) rates it three-and-a-half stars, but I feel it is better than that. The combination of the book and the movie led me, in later years to travel through some of the country covered in movie and the first half of the book. If you've already read the book, don't expect the movie to follow it; accept it as just an adventure. Remember, adventure is usually someone having a very hard time of it, a long way away from home. And try to think what it must have been like 250 years ago.

5stars - "A great gritty movie!" (DWIGHT TICHENOR)

must not judge this movie on our terms. It is what it is. It involves three distinct eras. The movie takes place, in the 1750's. It was made in 1940 & we are viewing it today more than 60 years after that. The colonists, Americans, were subservient to British rule of law. Colonist in turn, hated most Indians & treated them as less than human, a nuisance to be eliminated. It appears that the movie got Major Robert Rodger correct. He was a bloodthirsty butcher of Indians. Why? Because they fought back. What choice was there? Anyway, did Spencer Tracy ever make a bad movie? He is superb. Did Rodgers have a vision of Manifest Destiny, on his own, 50 years before the Founding Fathers, as the movie suggests? Probably not. His men, Rodger's Rangers, were cutthroat Indian killers, independent & not fit for polite society. They made money on the number of scalps, men, woman, children or French they could sell to the British. They were loyal to Rodgers & would die for him. Robert Young does a good job also. He is a bit of a cipher & he joins the Rangers as an outsider. Historically I'm not sure his character ever existed but he moves the story forward. Walter Brennon does his usual fine work as the sidekick.
America was a very racist nation in 1940 & a very different time than today. African-Americans had replaced Indians as the major group to be excluded & in the South, harassed & somtimes killed. A very good historical drama as accurate as can be expected.

5stars - "The ultimate ' fall in love movie '" (Andre Villemaire)

If ever a film deserved the label "classic romance," Rose Marie is the one. It starts out kinda slow, but gradually builds to a heartwrenching climax. Marie de Flor (Jeanette MacDonald) is an opera star who learns her brother, John Flower (James Stewart) has escaped from prison, allegedly killing a Canadian Royal Mounted Police in the process, and is in hiding. De Flor hires an Indian guide to take her to him. Along the way into the Canadian wilderness, she meets up with Sgt. Bruce (Nelson Eddy), the Mounty tracking down her brother. She starts to give him a false name, "Rose . . ." but he recognizes her as a star, and assumes her full name is Rose Marie de Flor. Sgt. Bruce is immediately attracted to de Flor, but before long he guesses her relationship Flower, his prey. It's one of the all time classic dilemmatic situations as love develops between the two, who are each using the other to their own, opposite ends. De Flor depends on Bruce to survive the rugged trek through the wilderness, not knowing how much he knows; he expects her to lead him to her brother, while pretending to be along to protect her. I don't think it's ever been done more effectively, with "Indian Love Call" adding a haunting effect all the while. The cast also includes Reginald Owen, Alan Mowbray, Una O'Connor, and David Niven in an early, one scene, bit part.

There is poignancy at the heart of this movie. It's a love story and love comes at a high price. Rose Marie, like many Eddy-MacDonald films, is filled with love and loss, yearning and sacrifice. The final scene of Rose Marie demonstrates these characteristics perhaps better than any of their other movies. This is a fine film, but it is dated and should be viewed in the context of its time. There are laughs, romance, bittersweet moments and beautiful, heart-felt singing. The MacDonald-Eddy chemistry is magical. This is a movie that should not be overlooked or forgotten. It will stay with you after you've seen it.

Rose Marie is one of my favorite films. America's Sweethearts go to a Pow Wow! Wow! Being part Apache myself, it's fun to watch the strange way Indians, in this case Canadians, are portrayed in this film. I was not offended. I don't even mind that the "half-breed" character was played by a Greek actor. There's too much to like here. A little romance blown up to universal proportions is fun sometimes. There's always something new on each viewing. I hope we're not too jaded and cynical today to get lost in a little light romance.

I really enjoyed this movie cause it did show the Indian grayeagle a kind person. I loved it when each day she beth learned about who she is and not what she was lead to believe. I loved it cause it was a clean movie withno language what so ever. I wish they had more scences for each time they moved from one place and at the end a little longer with chief running wolf her father that she found out about. I hope for more movies like this one especially about the Indians

This is not a very flashy review, but I remember seeing this movie when it came out at the theaters when I was 12. I fell in love with it then and I still love it now. It is one of my all time favorites. You can't go wrong with a cast like Ben Johnson, Iron Eyes Cody and Alex Cord. It is an all around good old fashion movie.

5stars - "I love this movie!" (kdoris)

Groan. This low budget oater is full of every "noble savage" cliche in the book (who can forget Scar offering 3 horses for Beth and then fighting Grayeagle for her). The best that can be said for this movie is that their hearts were in the right place, and the scenery is gorgeous. Plus they did cast Iron Eyes Cody as one of the leads. The lead actress, however, can't really act, and whoever cast Alex Cord as Grayeagle should have their head examined. He is an adequate actor in Western roles but at the time this movie was made there were some American Indian actors perfectly capable of playing this role. Vies with Winterhawk for worst '70's picture in this vein.

This late-seventies movie had lovely cinematography and haunting music, but beyond that there's little to hold the viewer's interest. The film lacked direction and important plot details were sketchy or entirely missing. The transition of the girl from kidnap victim to grateful granddaughter was hazy; it took a couple rewinds for us to figure out what the heck the old man's relationship to her was, and we're no slackers when it comes to following a storyline. There just seemed to be no discernible direction; it felt like a vignette rather than an honest film. Grayeagle came across as an ambitious movie that overreached itself and fell flat. Its political correctness made it even less palatable. The acting was fine on the part of Alex Cord and Ben Johnson, as well as many of the Indians, but the girl was awful, unable to evoke much from the viewer except annoyance or pity. The only reason we watched it is we're big Alex Cord fans, but felt like this movie was a waste of his talent and our time. It did have hints of romance but went absolutely nowhere in that area, either, leaving us puzzled instead of edified. Recommended only to huge fans of Alex Cord or Ben Johnson.

3stars - "Great Cinematography/Confusing Plot" (Dumb Ox)

I was awaken to the music/soundtrack from this movie. I had never heard of Alex Cord until the music peaked my interest.This is a very well written narrative. The Depiction of the loving High Cheyenne Warrior towards the great elderly dying Cheyenne Indian chief, Running Wolf, was very touching. The means he went through to make this great chiefs dream come true was realistic of the dedication some nationalities have towards their elderly. Americans toss aside their elderly as if they are of no value to society after a certain age. However this movie shows the Indian heritage as truly realizing the value of the wisdom our ancestors and seniors provide.I have enjoyed this movie each time I have viewed it. I love the scenes of gentleness Greyeagle demonstrates so subtly towards Lana Wood as Beth Coulter and observing the tenderness between the young Running Wolf and the beautiful actress who protrays Ida Coulter, Beth's mother. Alex Cord is fantastic as Greyeagle. A striking, strong portrayal of an Indian Warrior. What woman would not be amazed at this man's features and demonstration of strength with regards to his dedication to a cause.It would be well worth anyones time to view the truly sweet, innocent and thought provoking movie. Rarely do you find a movie so sweet with no vulgarity at all.

I've watched this classic whenever I could find it on TV. I enjoyed the chemistry between Taylor and Darcel. And, ofcourse, the women... As the charactors go through the trials of the trip, you Know that you too, would've said "Not me!"

4stars - "I enjoyed it" (Grace Moore)

Here is another oldie but goodie from the early '50's. Good story, acting and great B/W photography. One could go on at length about the fine points of this film, but the main thing is, just get it!! This is a definite "classic" and deserves a place in any movie library! Robert Taylor is at the top of his form as usual, providing enough conflict to keep one interested. Hope Emerson and the Asian boy, "Ito," provide a balance of humor that gives one a light-hearted break. I just wish it was on DVD.

I know, maybe we are used to seeing "Robert Taylor" in a certian setting when it come to movies, but this one has a good story behind it and a good cast of women coming out of the norm to reach cross country to their awaited future husbnads and home, but it's what goes on on the way to their destination that makes it real good.
By the time they get there, the husbands should be wearing the aprons. GET THIS ONE.

I first saw this movie a long time ago, before cable. I was a young girl then. This movie FINALLY gives women a place in the movement west. Most history books and movies make women of that era look like a bunch of pansies! Westward the Women depict women in a true pioneer light, able to do what is considered the work of men. This movie spurred on my interest in women's histories. This should be part of any school pioneer studies. At least a jumping off point for discussion regarding the authentic role of women since the first European woman set foot in North America.

My parents watched LONESOME DOVE when I was about three. Of course, then I was too young to grasp a television miniseries. But when I was about thirteen of fourteen, I watched it (i'd always heard it was good). I was amazed at the storyline and many times I weeped. It's my favorite movie....period!

5stars - "not just a great western, a great movie" (Annette Brown)

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I own the regular DVD set, but after getting a Blu ray player, this was on the top of my list to get on Blu ray. I think they did a wonderful job of converting this 1989 film and was very happy they did. It looks so much better now. One of the all time great movies that appeals to men and women due to the masterful storytelling of Larry McMurtry. Not many writers have his talent for character development, and this movie does a masterful job of bringing those characters to life. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones give the performance of their careers in this movie. Not many books are transferred to movies successfully, but this movie actually enhances the book. Great addition to a Blu-ray library (or any movie library for that matter).

This movie is without a doubt, the best western ever made, in fact, it maybe the best movie ever made. The acting, characters, screen shots, scenery, are outstanding. This movie is Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones' masterpieces of their excellent careers. I have watched this movie numerous times and I walk away from it shaking my head in awe. Anyone who watches this movie will get a very good idea what the old west was like, no holes barred. Lonesome Dove is a classic movie and an excellent bargain for the price.

How the West was won really started me, and then Centennial really took the cake, I could almost feel the heat and sweat from the skin they wore and the dry air, and the water was really cold, brrrrr.The sleeping out in the cool nite was a gas and who knew what was coming next. Centennial is a movie that should be watched by all interested in western History and especially by those living in Colorado. Ive never ever seen anything done better in the mini series format. It has been to long for this tremendous movie to come out on dvd. But very happy it did.

If you want Christmas spirit, look no further than "Christmas at Plum Creek." This is a beautiful video with a good message. The entire Ingalls family is struggling to provide their fellow family members with good Christmas gifts, and they end up doing just that by working energetically and making substantial sacrifices. The sacrifice that young Laura makes for her beloved Ma is one that will melt your heart and bring you to embrace the true meaning of Christmas. Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon deliver wonderful performances, just like always. Buy it, you'll be glad u did, it's a wonderful story that has everything about Christmas that is important tied in with it.

I grew up watching the Little House series, and I recently purchased this episode. This story illustrates the Ingalls' first Christmas at Plum Creek. It shows how each family member finds a special way to give a gift without a lot of money, even having to make big sacrifices and be a little sneaky keeping secrets. The story is very touching and really captures the holiday spirit in the Ingalls family. I love it and will pull it out every Christmas.

This is the hairiest western ever! Never before has there been so much wet chest hair in a wash tub with dry ice....as in the scene where the brothers bathe together. (Ooooooo....kinky!). And what is up with the dry ice. Are they supposed to be bathing in boiling water?

This sums up this whole never-ending joke of a western. Lame TV at its best....which means don't bother....unless you like real hairy cowboys!

I prefer Selleck's newer westerns. Still the cast in this movie is a who's who for westerns. Ben Johnson stills the show. Glen Ford is as solid as ever. The "Sackett boys" make it look easy. This is now a classic movie from the master classic western writer.

As always we received the DVD's in record time from USA. Both DVD's were excellent and as they were from Louis L'Amour's books which my husband has all of his books, we did enjoy the films.
