I was very pleased with the condition of the product. It was shipped in a timely manner and the condition was as stated "new". i don't believe region 2 in the title is a fair explanation. the d v d will not play on a standard player !

I had previously had this movie and lost it....I really enjoyed the plot but still can't see what good that it added to the movie to have wilford brimley telling this as a story....the story tells itself.....i think that if this could have really happened in this day and age, that it doesn't need someone narrarating it...it just seemed to detract from the plot itself, otherwise i would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a western yarn with a little twist

Last Of The Dog Men ranks right up there with Dreamkeeper for me. This is a beautiful film to look at.With a great story and musical score. Like a great book,it grabs you from the beginning and carries you through till the end. The acting by all,is superb,as well.

How it treats the issue of this last surviving tribe is especially respectful and satisfying.

Once viewed,the scenery will never be forgotten. I don't believe anyone could be disappointed in this film.

We purchased this DVD for our 2.5 year old daughter and are very sorry we did so without first watching ourselves. It's full of sword fights and menacing characters. The film's action is cut really fast so it has a pretty high "over-stim" factor. We're trying to find our way back to the Jungle with Mowgli! Definitely for older kids.

I've loved this ever since I was a kid. I love the plot, and the direction. It's a classic! Aladdin is a poor kid who lives in the streets of Agrabah who has to steal to eat His friend is a monkey named Abu. Princess Jasmine is being forced to marry, so she runs away. She meets Aladdin and they begin to fall in love. Jafar needs Aladdin to go to the Cave of Wonders to retrieve a lamp. When Aladdin becomes stuck in the cave, he meets the hilarious Genie that dwells within the lamp. Aladdin gets three wishes. When he goes back to Agrabah, everyone thinks he's a prince, with the help of Genie. Jafar gets the lamp, and brings destruction to Agrabah. Aladdin must stop him before it's too late. I highly recommend ALADDIN!!!

What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

5stars - ""Prop's Busted. . ."" (Phoebe Stogstill)

Ms Hepburn is not the proto-feminist here which makes a change. The film actually presents a surprisingly good story. There's a man and a woman working together without any obvious female chauvinism attempting to emasculate the man or put him in the shade.

However the original book presented the romance between the returning missionary and the habitual drunk, it's an innocent love story in the movie. The booze is disposed of in the "first reel", and the two combine their talents in a more or less egalitarian symbiosis. There's quite a bit of excitement, too, as the unlikely pair shoot the rapids and fight Germans and insects.

5stars - "Classic" (Henry Petitgirard)

When his village is pillaged shortly after WW 1 outbreak, the Reverend (Morley)dies of shock, leaving only his sister (Hepburn) to fend for herself. Enter Mr. Charlie Allnut (Bogart, winning his only Oscar) the uncouth, hard drinking skipper of the "African Queen", a boat of 1890 vintage, unsafe in a swimming pool. In quick succession, Bogart saves Hepburn, motors perilously down the Congo River, evades the Germans, is saved by one storm, sunken by another, and is captured by a German warship. All the while, he and Hepburn have developed a romance, culminated by marriage just before they're about to be hanged as British spies. Miraculously, the warship strikes underwater torpedos of Bogart's sunken boat, is sunk herself, as the newlyweds swim to safety. This cursory review is intended to appeal to those under 50, as I"m afraid a modern audience would find little appeal in this production,once a real classic for most.

4stars - "HEROISM VS. TERRORISM" (J J BAGS)

Keeping in mind that I watched this film on the subliminally par VHS option, I must say that "The African Queen" is a film that will bamboozle the senses, while cautiously telling the story about a daring duo in Africa. What brings questions to this film, nearly 56 years since its initial release, is not so much the characters, or the story, or the location, but the transition from 50s cinema to modern. Film studies coursework aside, one can tell the elasticity of a film by watching it again (over five decades later) and if it can continue to stretch, it has beaten through the space/film continuum. Was it enjoyed as much the first time as it was the 100th time? These are great questions to ponder as you watch another round of "Breathless", "Brief Encounter", or even "Grand Illusion" for the millionth time. Time, like age, can either be a blessing for films or a curse. "The African Queen" is a difficult one to pinpoint. On one hand it stars giants like Bogart and Hepburn direction by John Ford, while on the other hand it suffers from serious plot holes, sinking character development, and some over-burdening outside connections. I finished "The African Queen" today with bewilderment - it wasn't a disastrous film, nor was it the expected "breathtaking tour of Africa's wild side". There is power behind the working forces of "The African Queen", but they need to soon realize that the elastic is pulled to the point of no return, without releasing a DVD soon - they will a broken film with time not on its side.

If one asked who the five most important characters were in "The African Queen", it would be simple. They would be Hepburn, Bogart, Africa, Germany, and finally the boat itself (side note - none of these are in any symbolic order). These are all of the elements that we, as the viewer, are asked to be involved with throughout the course of the 104 minutes. Bogart is easy, on the eyes, ears, and soul. He embodied the surly captain with no care in the world. He was funny, captivating, and in control of every scene he was involved. Hepburn was a good counter-balance, but not that powerful of a character. She was weak when she was meant to be strong, insulting when kind, panicked when excited, and obviously had never been down rapids before in her life. Bogart had the swagger, Hepburn had the cue-cards and patented voice. They had chemistry, but more like a high school romance than a heated cinematic one. Bogart deserved the Oscar. They were great to watch on-screen, even as goofy as I thought Hepburn was, the pacing of the film and their dialogue kept me in motion. I loved what 50s cinema tried when doing a destination shoot. Africa was brought to the masses - in pre-production format. Campy cinematography deterred the faithful viewer away from the story because plastic mosquitoes and leeches were an eye-sore. It must have been amazing at the time to see Africa in its glory, now it seems forced and overwhelming. Then, let's not forget, the Germans. What good 50s film doesn't enjoy a good frolic in a wooded area without those pesky Germans lurking about? They were hams - all of them, but they brought a beginning, center, and end climax to this claustrophobic film. Finally, there was the African Queen herself, an aging professional that had more stories to tell than Ford would allow. It may save the day, bring a couple closer together, or even be a drinking buddy. Either way, these are the characters that create "The African Queen", whether you like them or not, they are with you throughout the journey.

As mentioned, the acting is bearable. The cinematography will definitely need a strong re-vamp when transferred to a DVD. The story itself keeps you seatbelted to your seat for the 104 minutes ... than why do I find myself so unfocused about my thoughts with this classic. Finicky with the characters , what juggles my mind with this film more of the overall platter than just one part of the serving. I didn't connect with the character, that's obvious, the story was fun - but at the same time seemed very dated and overwhelming. In one scene Bogart is afraid of the rapids, in the next leeches, in the next mosquitoes, but is never afraid to sleep outside without shelter. What can be irritating is that Africa really isn't all that frightening in this film, for being the major antagonist; I needed dark and seedy nights followed by blistering hot days with unbearable living conditions. Hepburn sweat, Bogart drank - that was about it. The boat itself was actually the scariest part of the film because of the cramp living area. While it did feel like the "African Queen" grew and shrunk between scenes, there was this sense of claustrophobia that couldn't be replicated in other films. There was tension, confusion, and panic on this boat, as well there should be, but it needed to be heightened. The terror level needed to go up one more notch - Bogey wasn't duct taping his windows.

Overall, "The African Queen" is a classic. There is never a reason to argue against that. It is a classic, however, that is slowly deteriorating over time. The sets are aged, the special effects are "MST3K"-able, and the acting (albeit fun) seemed cheap by the end. Set upon the background of the bestselling book by the same title, this is one of those that one should probably read prior to watching. Descriptions could mean life or death, and only the printed page will give us a true sense of emotion. I think I will add this film to my collection when it comes out, I could watch it again - but not side by side. Bogey is the character that steals the show, while Africa - in all its glory - seems to be short changed in the long run. Symbolically this film will be taught in film classes until the end of time, but for me, it seems to be loosing steam around each bend. I am not afraid to say that I got scared when rushing down the rapids or wading through the reeds, but I wasn't sold on the idea. Huston had the talent, he could have controlled his environment better. A classic yes, but will it remain that way? Guess I am back to wondering how many licks on the old Tootsie Pop for now...

Although this was't precisely the beginning of the revival of comic book heroes as hi-budget color movies, it was certainly one of the mos famous and successful of the transformations. Tim Burton, by casting Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger and Michael Keaton assured at least big headlines for his provocative cast. It was a signal that Button, the arch-eccentric director, intended to do something worthy of notice with this new film. And indeed he did.

The supporting cast was excellent: Billy Dee Williams, and Jack Palance were sensational, each in his own way, and Palance more even than Pat Hingle, captured the public imagination with his characterization.

Myself, I'm impressed mostly by the unique and effective music by Prince, one of yhe most innovative of POP artists. The stuff made for this movie particularly, was outstanding. And, in addition to that, the art design -- of the sets and of the ariel floats -- was brash, sensational and thrilling, like cheap candy. The idea of gassing an entire city by means of festive baloons is a high point in demenedness.

The sight jokes and the staging of them is wonderful. Basinger is exquisite and the perfect foil for the JOKER"S perverse, monomonical lust.

In short, while keeping most of the elemens of the original Detective Comics creation -- the demented, sadistic arch-villain; the beautiful, helpless girl; the bumbling, well-meaning police force; the blithering and spooked population of corrupt Gotham, and above off the appearances and disappearances of the caped crusader -- this version of the BATMAN myth, combines with the 1943 Serial, to offer the careful observer of the changes in American POP culture and behavior, a rich and irreplacable reward. The sexual symbolism is hotter and more overt; the overall feeling of irrational psychosis is more intense and shrill, and the cynicism of the concept thrills the nerves like an Asian aphrodisiac.

This is or can be a valuable addition to your collection of BATMAN POP junk treasure. Long shelf life. It defies time.

I HOPE SO,THIS "BATMAN" IS A BETTER FILM COMPARED TO IT'S FOLLOW UP'S,EVEN THOUGH I DID ENJOY "BATMAN BEGINS" AND "THE DARK KNIGHT". HOPE IT BECOMES AVAILABLE ASAP OR VERY SOON,HEATH LEDGER MADE A DARK JOKER BUT I STILL ENJOY JACK NICHOLSON AS A FUNNY BUT EVIL JOKER.

After much anticipation, legendary director Tim Burton directs the memorable box office hit "Batman."Set in the brooding and morbid Gotham City, a millionare bachelor, Bruce Wayne dons a persona to make sure that no innocent person faces the fate his parents faced. He calls himself "Batman."

He causes contreversy in the city, which in the polices eyes, he is a criminal who is taking the law in his own hands. Well, soon enough he has a showdown with Jack Napier, Boss Carl Grissom's right hand man.Napier the falls in a vat of acid, which turns him into the homicidal Joker.Joker now sets out on a grizzly crime spree, causing chaos and mayhem for Gotham.

His Big plan:Poisoning all of Gotham with his "Smylex"gas.Batman must stop the Joker before this plan can be set into action.But,Brucie's love interest, photojournalist Vicki Vale(Kim Basinger)gets suspicious of him for his mysterious dissapearances.But soon, Vicki becomes a love target for Joker, and he uses extreme homicidal remarks and gifts to try to get her love.

This film is extremely entertaining, and you will always treasure this in your movie collection.

But the dark feel would rub off on many comic-book adaptions, and the big success would lead to more superhero films. (For better or worse.) 3stars - "Not perfect, but somewhat important." (Colleen J. King)

It's a tough thing growing old!......and this film hasn't grown old gracefully. Tim Burton tried so hard to make the film the fans wanted to see, but the 1966 TV show is still present to a degree in this "not so dark" romp through Gotham City! I do enjoy this film despite it's flaws, but you have to remember at the time this was fairly new territory. I went to see this opening night and it was a grand experience for the most part although I was not completely happy with the film!

Keaton who fans and critics scoffed at for being picked to play the caped crusader is actually pretty good and way better than Kilmer or the abysmal Clooney! Jack Nicholson's Joker is a slightly more deranged Caesar Romero, his perfomance is sometimes genius, but ultimately it's not that memorable because of the uneven tone of the film. A tone that switches from dark to camp to Hollywood and back again. If there is one consistent critique that remained the same in the last 20 years, it's that the Prince music is horrible and inappropriate in this film! Making the art gallery scene one of my least favorite parts of the movie!

OK enough already, the film is still pretty entertaining earning a 3 1/2 star rating from me and this two disc edition is awesome! Great DVD transfer and lots of Batman goodies to look at!

I love this film, always have, always will. HOWEVER the color restoration turned practically every characters' hair red. Wendy and John certainly never had red hair before. Although the original color is dated, it is much more beautiful.

A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight training and combat. Ted eventually picks of some of Pete's quirks and style, becoming quite a hot shot pilot himself. Of course, he eventually meets and falls in love with Dorinda, making Pete very jealous. Dorinda is still devoted to Pete's memory, but she, too, eventually falls for Ted. In the end, however, Pete lets Dorinda go, saving Dorinda, Ted, and even his own soul.

This sweet, sentimental film combines the war genre with romantic fantasy. Directed by Victor Fleming and written by Dalton Trumbo, the script is wry and witty with both Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne delivering some great lines (hence the title of this review). Tracy, Dunne, and Johnson are all believable in their respective roles as well as what you expect them to be as actors. Barrymore is classic as "The Commanding General," and I loved Ward Bond as Pete and Dorinda's best friend. Considering this was filmed in 1944, the special effects are admirable and what you would expect from that era. Apparently, there are several inaccuracies in this film (e.g. there weren't any German aircraft carriers in WWII), but I simply did not care.

A GUY NAME JOE is a terrific choice for a pleasant, sappy, nostalgic evening at home. You may need a hanky in a few spots. But watching this classic film, both my husband and I found smiles on our faces for most of the evening.

Side notes: There is no character named Joe in this film. At the beginning some hero-worshipping kids explain that pilots in the Army Air Corps call any "right fellow" Joe. Also, A GUY NAMED JOE was remade in 1989 by Steven Spielberg as the movie ALWAYS.

Trying to directly compare this movie, made in 1943, with "Always", made in 1989, is not really fair. In 1943 we were at war and movies were often designed to support our war efforts, as well as entertain. Both are love stories, but written and directed for different times and different audiences. For those of us around in 1943, it is easy to understand and appreciate movies from that era, while also enjoying pictures of a more recent making, from the perspective the time they are made. My advice to younger viewers, is to think of "A Guy Named Joe" as a well acted and emotional, love and war story, as well as an insight into entertainment during the war years

4stars - "What airplae stuff" (Guy W. Blakeley)

I'm not the type of movie viewer to enjoy the remake of a film more than the orignal. But in this case, I'm going to make an exception.

I'm also no great lover of all of Steven Spielberg's films (although I do enjoy many of them), but Mr. Spielberg (director of the remake of this film, re-titled "Always", staring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman) seemed to have a better grasp of the relationship between Pete -- the main protagonist -- and Dorinda -- the main protagonist's love interest -- than did the director of "A Guy Named Joe", Victor Fleming.

And let's face it, their relationship is what the story is all about. A cocky fly-boy who strives to maintain his independence but is deeply in love with another woman who also happens to love flying. Spencer Tracy plays Pete Sandidge, a gruff but extremely able pilot, fighting the good fight against the Germans during WW II. His only vice is his affection toward Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne), a beautiful lady in the Womens Air Corp. But when Pete dies bombing a German carrier (which, by the way, is historically false since Germany never made one before the end of the war), Dorinda turns inward, choosing a life of loneliness and despair, until she meets Ted Randall (Van Johnson). Little does Dorinda and Ted, and Pete for that matter, realize that their lives will be inexplicably intertwined during their flight and ground time during the end of the war.

Pete returns as a sort of spirit to the pilots and aids Ted in becoming the best flyer in the army. But Ted also falls in love with Dorinda, Pete's old flame, and Pete has to choose between letting Dorinda go, or holding onto her and watching her whither into a shell of aloneness.

My biggest issue with this film was that I didn't feel the connection that Pete felt for Dorinda. He just seemed off-ish and brusque. While in "Always", Richard Dreyfuss' character really made me aware of how strongly Pete felt for Dorinda.

I also didn't care for "Heaven" -- or whatever it was supposed to represent when Spencer Tracy died -- being a military style place. In "Always", Audrey Hepburn plays Richard Dreyfuss' Heaven and Earth go-between with no ties to anything military or government related. A nice adjustment and screenplay alteration.

There was also a lot more subtle humor in "Always" that made me feel more connected with the characters than in "A Guy Named Joe."

This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy "A Guy Named Joe." I did. It's just, surprisingly, I liked the remake more.

3stars - "I Prefer the Remake, Which I Usually Don't!" (B. Merritt)

A Guy Named Joe is THE classic movie about a cracked up WWII bomber pilot (Spencer Tracy) sent back from Heaven as a ghost to provide guidance, like a guardian angel, to a new pilot trainee who turns out to fall in love with the ghost's girlfriend (Irene Dunne). I think this is the only movie in which Spencer Tracy played opposite Irene Dunne, who was one of the classiest leading ladies of her time (The Awful Truth, Penny Serenade, Life With Father, I Remember Mama, Anna and the King of Siam, The Mudlark, etc.).

The stellar supporting cast includes Van Johnson (Brigadoon, The Pied Piper of Hamlin), James Gleason (Here Comes Mr. Jordan, The Bishop's Wife), Lionel Barrymore (On Borrowed Time, It's A Wonderful Life), Ward Bond (Sgt. York, The Searchers), Don Defore (The Human Comedy, Ramrod), Barry Nelson (Airport, The Shining), and Esther Williams, soon to become a star in a class of her own (Bathing Beauty, Take Me Out To The Ball Game). Unfortunately remade as "Always" - nothing against Richard Dreyfuss, but he's no Spencer Tracy, and ditto the rest of the respective casts.

In addition to well-acted fantastic romance, there are some great air combat scenes, some of the best of its time. (Van Johnson also appeared with Spencer Tracy in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo the same year.)

If you like fantasies like Heaven Can Wait, That's The Spirit, The Dust Factory, Beyond Tomorrow, etc., you must see this one. If you're a fan of Spencer Tracy or a movie buff who likes a lot of character actors, you must see this movie. If you're interested in old World War II movies with combat action, you shouldn't miss this one!

5stars - "TRUE CLASSIC" (Cindy Green)

Walt Disney's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" is one of the best loved family films of all time, however, when lined up against greats like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Pinocchio", it is easy to see its shortcomings. Standing alone, it is a highly entertaining adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone and if released today, I believe it would create the same sensation it caused when it premiered in 1961.

The story revolves around two Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, and their owners, Roger and Anita, who occupy a modest flat in urban London. Not long after Perdita gives birth to a litter of fifteen puppies, they are abducted by the evil Cruella De Vil, an old schoolmate of Anita's who lusts for a coat made of Dalmatian puppy fur. While the humans mourn, Pongo and Perdita utilize the "Twilight Bark", a canine gossip chain, which leads them to Hell Hall, a deteriorating manor house in the English countryside where the puppies, along with eighty four others are being held captive by Cruella's bumbling assistants, Horace and Jasper. In order to save their children, Pongo and Perdita must seek help from an assortment of neighboring animal friends including Colonel, a sputtering Old Enlglish Sheepdog and a brave cat named Mr. Tibbs, but as time runs out and Cruella's suspisions intensify, the fate of the puppies grows more and more uncertain.

While this all sounds very thrilling, at times the story can be quite dull and uneventful. The entire first act drones along like an infomercial for Prozac and the animation, especially the scenes in Roger and Anita's flat, looks bland and too two-dimensional.

It isn't until the arrival of Cruella De Vil that the plot truly begins to boil. She is the saving grace of the picture and quite frankly, the sole reason to see it. With Betty Lou Gerson's smokey vocal stylings and animator Marc Davis's graceful hand and observant eye, they create one of the great screen villainesses of all time. It is much more than a performance - it is life on the screen.

This is a classic movie to add to any Disney collection. It is best to buy it now while it is out of the "vault" because otherwise the Disney movies are hard to find anywhere, including Amazon.com. My nephews enjoy this movie and want to watch it whenever they come over.

It's almoast impssible to discribe this famous movie is one review, that's how good it is!

All I can say is, it truely is one of the best loved movies of all times.

This wonderful, clasic movie is 69 years old, and the story itsself, which started out as a story that L.Frank Baum would tell to children, right in his own front yard is almoast 110!
So it dosen't surprize me, that people of all ages still love this movie, after all, who ever could forget the well known actors and actresses who played the famous charitors (Especilly Judy Garland as Dorathy), the famous story with it's unforgetable morals, or all thoes classic songs, such as all time favorite "Someware over the rainbow"

This movie is without a dout, one of the best movies in history!

As a bonus, this special edition also contains full color poastcards, as well as mini poasters, programs, and even an inatation to the theater and a movie ticket from the year this famous movie first came out, 1939!

I wish I could review this product, but as of 12/8/08, I still have not received this item. It was suppose to be here before Thanksgiving at the very latest and here it is the 8th of Dec. and it still has not come. I am very disappointed because I was going to use this DVD in my classroom.

If and when I ever get this DVD, I will let you know.

MARVELOUS! A movie that your child will love from beginning to end, will leave you with your foot tapping, your mouth humming the tunes, and you NOT having a headache? Oh, what could be better! Definitely a huge fan of disney, here, but this one to me goes above and beyond. I have always loved this. When it came out of the vault and hit DVD I was floored. Not sure when it goes back in, but I would get a copy while you can!

She doesn't get to watch the whole thing often but I occasionally just cue up the songs and let her watch, sing along and dance to those. Definitely a solid choice for any home dvd collection.
