This film is a classic for both John Wayne and John Ford. Perhaps it because the film echoes a great dream of the Irish - to return prosperous to the Old country of Ireland where one can live a simple life, fall in love with the most beautiful girl in the county and live out one's years in an idyllic farm. Wayne is the American boxer who returns to encounter a spunky Irish girl (Maureen O'Hara) and her cantankerous brother (Victor MacGlaglen). The film won numerous Oscars for performance, direction, cinematography and more. This was a very personal project for John ford who was from Ireland.

This warm and funny account of a newly married couple trying to make a go of it on a backwoods chicken farm, based on Betty MacDonald's popular best seller, was a big hit with audiences during the 1940's and has lost none of its appeal today. This is a great film the entire family can watch together. Chester Erskine produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Fred F. Finklehoffe in this hilarious and heartwarming film all will enjoy.

Claudettle Colbert is wonderful as the shocked but game Betty when on her honeymoon her husband Bob (Fred MacMurray) informs her he has quit his brokerage house job and bought a chicken farm in the country. She figures things could be worse, and they are, as their farm is a ramshackle old place that fights back! After all, there's not another place in the county like it; none of that streamlined stuff--no running water, no frigadare!

There are some laugh-out-loud moments as Betty and Bob fix one thing that leads to another, from a door that comes off its hinges to an old wood burning stove that seems to have it in for Betty! Bob's enthusiasm never wanes and Betty's moxy helps her trudge forward, making the farm their own.

As Betty gets attached to the chicks and a hunting dog who hides under the stove for safety she gets acquainted with her neighbors, Ma and Pa Kettle. Marlorie Main and Percy Kilbride are a hoot as the backwoods country folk with a bundle of young `uns whose names Ma is always mixing up. Pa is constantly "borrowing" tools and supplies from Bob yet can't build anything right! This was the first appearance of Ma and Pa Kettle, who would become a small franchise for Universal.

Betty has other things to contend with besides the farm, as the pretty Harriet Putnam (Louise Allbritton) has a fancy mechanized chicken farm just down the road and seems to have her sights set on Bob. There is a big dance and a country fair for distraction, and a side story involving the Kettle's son Tom (Richard Long---Jarrod from The Big Valley) who is different than the rest of the family and would like to go to college. If only that quilt Ma gave Betty could win first prize....

But the real fun and warmth here comes from Betty and Bob and their efforts to make a go of it. Colbert is particularly endearing and even the farm can't hide how great she looks in a flannel shirt and slacks. When Pa's still blows up and starts a fire which destroys part of Bob and Betty's place, all the neighbors come to chip in and help them rebuild. But some confusion caused by the backyard glamour girl, Bella Farms owner Harriet, sends Betty and her "little surprise" back to the city for a time.

There is a nice ending, warm and funny like the rest of this very enjoyable family film. Having not read the book prior to seeing the film, I certainly intend to do so now. This film is a hoot, with a warm feeling that will bring a smile to your face. A great film for everyone. Grab a big bowl of popcorn and have fun.

"The Egg & I", a movie based on the book of the same title, is entertaining, clean( you can let the kids watch this one), and funny. It's not quite as funny as the book, though. Claudette Colbert is perfectly cast as Betty, the convenience-loving city girl who gets much more than she bargains for when she marries Bob, who is bent on pursuing his dream of owning a chicken ranch.The ranch turns out to be isolated and primitive even by chicken ranch standards.Poor Betty is forced to adjust quickly, and does so reluctantly and clumsily.Those who read the book before seeing the movie may be a little puzzled by the appearance of "the other woman", who is absent from the book.My suggestion: Read the book, then buy the movie, but don't expect the latter to be exactly like the former.Both are VERY worthwhile buys, though.If you have to choose between the movie and the book, I'd suggest going for the book.The movie is very worthwhile, especially if you want a film that the whole family can enjoy.

4stars - "A Funny Movie Based on a Hilarious Book" (C. Norris)

A genuinely funny, old-school comedy, featuring Fred MacMurray as a city slicker gone country boy, a white collar executive who decides to chuck it all in and become a chicken farmer, somewhere deep in the boonies, and Claudette Colbert as his long-suffering, stand-by-her-man, newlywed wife. Both actors have superb comic timing, and their chemistry together-- he blithely missing her every disatisfaction, she gulping back her exasperation -- is quite good. This was also the first movie to feature the iconic "hick" couple, Ma & Pa Kettle, a Lil Abner-ish pair who went on to make several films together after this debut. I suspect this film, however, is the best of the lot. Recommended!

Hi. I'm Aaron ... . Not only video game expert, but movie expert. Thank you, thank you. I couldn't laugh hard enough. Betty dances with all kinds of men, meets interresting people, falls in mud, gets ditched by her husband (or so she thinks), allows people to chatter her ears off, makes mistakes all the time, watches people act like pigs, lives around lunatics (and bears it), faints in the middle of crowds, bases her life around chickens, and bears all of it. Ma and Pa Kettle are part of this movie. You should watch it!

This is one of my favorite all time films. Definitely the best movie ever starring Lucille Ball. I am a long time Lucy fan, but that being said even if you didn't enjoy her television shows, this movie is a comedy film that should appeal to about anyone. None of the slapstick humor and dizzy redhead stuff you might imagine there to be. Lucy and Desi tie the knot and buy a long trailer house with all the modern features of the day. They set out as honeymooners Nicky and Tacy, off to introduce Nicky to Tacy's family. A lot of weird stuff happens on their journey to make this a long long honeymoon which just might bring a few second thoughts about ever having gotten married. I highly recommend this one to anyone. All the professionalism you have come to expect from these two hollywood moguls. A very delightful film and very well done in every aspect.

Love it!!

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz take us on a laugh filled adventure in this, one of my all time favorite films. The Long Long Trailer - a classic of 1954 (wow, it's as old as me!)

Love the color, the scenery, the trailer, the dialogue, the funny situations they get themselves in. It is a hoot of hoots!

The young couple, just married, set off on a trip to the husband's new job, in a new town. Lucy, the wife, has the great idea to buy this trailer to take with - "Oh we'll save so much money, dear!" LOL Well, you will see how that works out!!

One disaster after another, and you will be howling with laughter, along with sympathy for her dear hubby, who has to put up with not only her, but this trailer of all trailers!

Funny from beginning to end. You'll fall in love with Lucy all over again!

Buy it. An American classic, indeed.

While Paramount Home Video has successfully marketed DVD packages of I Love Lucy, Warner Bros. Home Video is now getting into the act with a package that includes the only two feature films Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz starred in together, The Long, Long Trailer in 1954 and Forever, Darling, in 1955. A third movie, Too Many Girls, produced in 1940, stars Ball in the leading role and Arnaz in a bit part. The two reportedly met on the set of the film, fell in love, and married a few weeks afterwards

What a fantastic pairing of the classic Luci & Desi comedy team, even while "I Love Lucy" was still airing before live audiences. An initial fun point was the change of 'Lucy & Ricky' to 'Taci & Nicky'. Both my parents and I saw this aired on TV, and laughed so hard we were repeatedly wiping our tears as Taci fell out the tilted trailer into the mud, was tossed with the salad while Nicky serenely drove the pitching trailer, & "hold-your-breath" CLIFF-hanging suspense as the trailer was just inches from the precarious edge!

They bought me this VHS treasure 8 years ago, but repeated viewing has changed the once-sharp images to a near blur, so I'm on a DESPERATE search for a crisp DVD copy. MGM's transfered numerous classics to DVD; why not THIS for all us Lucy-Desi fans still loving their inimitable hilarity? PLEASE...A QUALITY DVD FOR THIS HIGH-QUALITY CLASSIC!!!

I first saw this years ago, and it gets better with every viewing. Barbara Stanwyck is Elizabeth Lane, a magazine columnist/domestic goddess/perfect wife + mother -- the Martha Stewart of 1945 -- who's a total fraud. Single, childless and a terrible cook, she bangs out her columns in her city apartment while wolfing down sardines beside a window view of her laundry drying against a downscale Manhattan skyline. When her clueless publisher insists she and her "husband" take in a war hero for the holidays at their "Connecticut farmhouse," it's a mad scramble to come up with hubby, hearth and baby in time to save her career. And when she finds herself falling for the visiting sailor (a dashing Dennis Morgan), her best-laid plans unravel deliciously. S.Z. Sakall is her Uncle Felix --a gourmet chef who cheerfully abets her homemaker column -- and Reginald Gardiner is perfection as John Sloan, her stolid, thoroughly unappetizing faux husband.

Christmas in Connecticut (1945) is a Christmas movie, starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, and Sydney Greenstreet. Released through Warner Brothers, it was directed by Peter Godfrey. Although originally released on 11 August 1945, the film has become a holiday classic.

The film begins in World War II as a German U-Boat fires a torpedo, sinking an American vessel. Two survivors, Jefferson Jones (Dennis Morgan) and Seymour Sinkiewicz (Frank Jenks) float aboard a raft and wait for rescue, eager to rid themselves of their hunger. After eighteen days, they are rescued and begin recovery at a U.S. Navy hospital. However, Jones must do without solid food while Sinkiewicz gets all he can handle. The explanation is that he starved longer than Sinkiewicz, allowing him the last available K-ration. Desperate for some real food, Jones turns to Sinkiewicz, who tells him that the nurses will do special favors for patients who are in love with them. Jones decides to try this with his nurse, Mary Lee (Joyce Compton). The con pays off, but Jones soon learns that the doctors were right. His stomach is not ready for solid food.

Barbara Stanwyck as Elizabeth Lane in Christmas in Connecticut.Jones later realizes the plan has worked too well, and Mary is prepared to marry him. He tells her that, being in the Navy, he's never really known what a real home is like. Nevertheless, Mary is determined to see the engagement through. She reads an article in a housekeeping magazine by Elizabeth Lane. Elizabeth Lane (Barbara Stanwyck) is comparable to today's Martha Stewart. She lives on a farm in Connecticut with her husband and baby, a model of domesticity and the idol of many an American housewife. Mary decides to write to the publishing magnate, Mr. Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet) who controls Lane's publication. She asks if Jones can spend Christmas on Mrs. Lane's farm. Mr. Yardley, sensing a public relations boon, supports the idea wholeheartedly.

Unfortunately, there's a problem; Elizabeth is not nearly what she appears. She lives in a small apartment in New York, is unmarried and has no concept of domestic life or cuisine. She writes the articles simply for the money, and her "five-star" recipes are provided by her friend, Felix (S.Z. Sakall), who owns a Manhattan bistro. When she hears of Mr. Yardley's plan, she begins to panic. She tries to call off the plan, but Yardley dismisses this. In addition, Yardley is feeling lonely this Christmas. His daughter is stuck in Washington, and he stands to spend Christmas alone is his Long Island mansion. He decides to invite himself to the farm for Christmas, adding more pressure to Elizabeth's problems.

With time running short, Elizabeth turns to her friend, John Sloan (Reginald Gardiner). Sloan is a pompous architect who has given Elizabeth numerous marriage proposals, none of which she has accepted. John actually lives on a farm in Connecticut and he agrees to let her use it, if she agrees to marry him. Given the circumstances, Elizabeth agrees. She decides to bring Felix along to do the cooking and pose as her uncle, a favor he is willing to carry out as Elizabeth helped to fund his restaurant business. It seems that Elizabeth is in the clear, but the next few days put a decisive strain on the plan.

Elizabeth struggles to keep up the charade, demonstrating a degree of unfamiliarity in farm life and child care, as well as great reluctance toward the kitchen. In addition, Elizabeth develops a romantic interest in Jones, which she must also keep to herself. But things go horribly wrong on the evening after Christmas, when Mr. Yardley spots a woman stealing Elizabeth's baby and immediately calls the police. (The woman was actually the baby's real mother. Due to the mother's long hours at the nearby war plant, the baby spends much of the day at the farm-allowing Elizabeth to pass it off as her own.) When Elizabeth comes home to find a media circus, she decides to come clean. Furious, Mr. Yardley fires her, but has a change of heart after Felix fabricates a story about a competing magazine's attempts to hire her. After finding out that Jones' fiancee, the nurse Mary Lee, is now married to Sinkiewicz, Jones and Elizabeth admit their love for each other. The film ends with the couple set to be married.

5stars - "PURE CHRISTMAS MAGIC!" (Noel Serrano)

Bad direction keeps this movie from being good. In fact, even Barbara Stanwyck comes off looking awkward in some scenes. But she can never be truly bad. Her presence and a great supporting cast keep me watching this one again and again: (the usually weird) Sydney Greenstreet feels just enough out of place to be really fun, (the often overly cute) S. Z. Sakall gets to deliver all the sardonic jabs that keep the movie from being too sweet, and (the always wonderful) Una O'Connor is, well, just wonderful.

The one-reel extra, A Star in the Night, is the kind of pure Christmas schmaltz that will have any true holiday believers bawling on cue. And that alone is worth the price of purchase.

4stars - "Not Great, But Really Good" (Jason Knapp)

Don't miss the extra feature on this DVD. I was enchanted by the special vintage short, "Star in the Night." This was a Southwest retelling of the Christmas story. Three cowboys follow a neon star to a rundown inn where the lack of Christmas Spirit runs rampant. When a young expectant mother and her husband in need of a place to stay,arrive, the true meaning of Christmas fills the inn.

Director Don Siegel and writers, Robert Finch and Saul Elkins masterfully tell us the story that we've heard so many times.

This movie has one of the most brilliant bits of casting ever. I mean, (from a woman's perspective) if an angel were to appear on earth, what better form could he possibly manifest than that of Cary Grant?
Originally, Grant was supposed to play the part of the Bishop, which is well-played by David Niven, and Niven was supposed to play Dudley the angel. Grant reportedly insisted on taking the angel's part, however. He plays it to perfection, right down to the soulful look in his liquid brown eyes.
This is one of the best classic holiday movies. It is not shown as much as "It's a Wonderful Life," and though it is warm and sentimental, it not too sticky-sweet to tolerate.

This is one of my very favorite Christmas classics. Though I hadn't heard of and didn't see the film until 1980, it immediately joined the ranks of my holiday favorites - at the top of the list. Here's why:

1. Cary Grant as an angel. This is perfect casting and the elegant Mr. Grant plays Dudley with effortless aplomb and grace. The role was made for him and without him the film would probably not be the classic it is (who else could've played an angel and not seemed ridiculous?). Watching each woman in the film fall under his charismatic and kindly spell is special fun.

2. A wonderful supporting cast: Loretta Young, David Niven, James Gleason, Gladys Cooper, Elsa Lanchester, Monty Woolley, Sara Haden, Regis Toomey. This is a splendid ensemble cast and every member delivers. I especially enjoy the great Glady's Cooper's arrogant and demanding aristocrat, Mrs. Hamilton, who becomes putty in Dudley's presence, and the always excellent James Gleason as the cabby, Sylvester. But Niven, Lanchester, Woolley and Haden are all standouts. Loretta Young's soft and astonishing beauty assist her well in the title role as the rather sheltered and innocent but increasingly unhappy wife of a bishop (Niven) who is in the process of losing his way.

3. A good old fashioned Christmas message. The moral of the story is that Christmas is about peace on earth and goodwill toward others, not material objects (gifts, cathedrals, etc.) or personal glory. The plot delivers this message gently and well.

4. It's a Sam Goldwyn film, so it's first rate. Aside from the long, deep list of stars and solid supporting actors, the production is sleek and goodlooking, the plot is engaging, the script facile and often clever and amusing.

Since I first saw "The Bishop's Wife," I've become aware of other classic holiday films (THANKS TO TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES) that were unknown to me before: "Meet Me in St. Louis" (Judy Garland) and "Christmas in Connecticut" (Barbara Stanwyck) in particular. In fact these three are my favorites. Add the 1984 TV version of "A Christmas Carol" starring George C. Scott and the 1970 musical, "Scrooge," with Albert Finney and you have five peerless Christmas classics.

I love this movie. I haven't seen it in years and I am dismayed to learn that it isn't available on DVD yet. This is one of the best teen movies I have ever seen. It's sweet, honest, funny and kind.

I love this movie. I haven't seen it in years and I am dismayed to learn that it isn't available on DVD yet. This is one of the best teen movies I have ever seen. It's sweet, honest, funny and kind.

I first watched this movie when it came out on video at the age of 10, and now, 12 years later, I am not over it. Angus is an incredible movie and I am devastated at the fact that I have been unable to watch it in years. This movie must come out on DVD and hope it does so soon. 5stars - "I need Angus" (mkvel)

Angus Bethune (Charlie Talbert) is an overweight teenager with a crush on Melissa Lefevre (Ariana Richards), a pretty cheerleader at his school. Since he was in grade school he has been bullied by Rick Sandford (James Van Der Beek) the good looking kid that can do no wrong in the eyes of pretty much everyone. And if things couldn't be worse, Melissa is Rick's girlfriend.

This inspirational movie with lots of great lines and lessons is narrated by Angus who we quickly follow from grade school to present day as he copes with his weight by being tuff instead of walked over by his peers. He breaks Rick's nose numerous times in an attempt to stand up for himself but Rick keeps getting prettier and Angus becomes more and more frustrated. I not supporting violence as a measure of handling our problems but Angus doesn't let his weight get in the way of the things he wants to do like play football and get into a specialized Science school. By the end of the film he resolves his violent tendencies as a way of coping with confrontation.

Rick's current punishment involves getting Angus voted King of the Winter Ball in an attempt at embarrassing Angus. Angus knows this, but he also sees it as an opportunity to dance with Melissa who is of course the Queen. Now if only he could get a black tux that will fit him and learn to dance.

The talented Kathy Bates has a small role as Meg Bethune, Angus's supportive and loving mother, who had her own kind of torments to live through as a child. Her greatest fear is that Angus will be as scarred as she feels. George C. Scott is his intelligent and wise Grandpa Ivan. He's "the big kid down the hall" getting married to a beautiful and much younger woman despite what everyone around him says about it. His motto? "Screw 'em!"

Angus and his grandfather have a funny nattering relationship that is hilarious. Angus could come across as disrespectful of his grandfather but its part of their relationship and if you look deeper it's obvious they love one another. He receives lots of advice from his grandpa on girls and life although he doesn't necessarily take it immediately into account. When Angus is concerned about being normal he rallies with: I'm big, I'm normal. When Angus threatens to break more noses he counters with: You can't go around beating everyone up 'cause they don't like you. Use what you have in here (points to head).

Even though this film is over ten years old its message is still relevant to plus size teenagers and adults today. Don't give up and don't hide away. There are a lot of embarrassing moments Angus has to live through and the viewer can't help but feel for him and maybe even relate. It's a fun film with a great message for living life and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It even has a lively soundtrack with artists such as Goo Goo Dolls and Green Day. I highly recommend seeing it at least once. Check your local video store or watch for it on your local specialty network. Hopefully someone will release this one in DVD soon. Reviewed by M.E. Wood.

If you haven't seen this movie, you should. It may be a little off-the-wall, but it's still great and should be put on DVD, haha. Part of it was made in my hometown when I was a kid, and it has many now-famous actors. If you're looking for a good, high-school movie, this is it.

Shirley Valentine has enjoyed screen and stage success as the story of the ignored and unappreciated British housewife who finally has it up to here with her demanding husband and clueless daughter, secretly running off to Mykonos, one of the Greek Isles, for a change of emotional and attitudinal landscape. Once she ditches her self-absorbed female companion on the trip, Shirley settles into an unexpected romance with a cafe owner (Tom Conti) who reminds her just how lonely she's been. Her decision not to return to the U.K. and stay at the hotel cafe to serve guests puts her husband in crisis and a little self-examination of his own as he packs his bags and heads for the Greek Isles to fetch her. Pauline Collins is witty and charming and very funny as Shirley Valentine, especially as she succumbs to the affections and flattery of her younger pursuer.

5stars - "favorite girlfriend movie" (Shirley V.)

This is one of the most wonderful stories of self actualization I have ever sen. It has humor, love, resentment, anger, regret, sadnesss, and finally redemption. Although many would consider this a "chick-flick", I think there is a lesson forus husbands too...keep the relationship alive and listen to your partener, she is far more complex than you realize. Relationships drift apart from lack of communication, so talk to eachother. That is the ultimate lesson of this heartwarming movie.

For women of all ages, but most certainly for middle-aged and above, who have been or are married. You know when you're reading a good book or talking to a good friend and they just "get" everything you're feeling? There's hardly a better moment than that. Shirley Valentine is a keeper movie to pass among female friends and family. Men can watch, of course, but they're not likely to "get" it. Love it, love it, love it.

5stars - "Dead Solid Perfect" (Randall J. Raile)

As a former tour player now out of the game, this film captures alot of what the PGA tour used to be. The race to "Monday Qualifiers" by what we were referred to as "rabbits" was filled with alot of the shenanigans this movie portrays. I'm sure the PGA wasn't especially thrilled with the movie, but this system produced greats like Trevino, Rodriguez, and many more. Would love to see this movie out in DVD (haven't owned a VCR in years)soon! As per other reviews, B movie with great content and storyline. Would by 10 DVD's for gifts for my golfing buddies!

I wrote HBO pictures a few years ago begging for a DVD release, and still we're forced to wait, and wait, and wait.

This is the quintessential golf movie. While I enjoyed Tin Cup, it was nowhere near as engaging as Dead Solid Perfect. This movie is very different than Caddyshack and equally as funny in parts.

Caddyshack's poking fun at the country club lifestyle and Dead Solid Perfect's views of being a PGA touring professional in the 80s are worlds apart, but the golf is what matters here.

DVD cannot come soon enough. If you play golf and don't find yourself quoting this movie to your buddies on the golf course, something is definitely wrong. Buy it on VHS if you have to, you will not be disappointed.

I haven't seen this VHS product, but I've seen the movie on cable TV. It's not the greatest movie, though it has its moments. The saving grace is that Corinne Bohrer is gorgeous in it. But I'm kind of biased. I've always been a Corinne Bohrer fan.

We had been waiting for several years for the DVD Holiday Affair to be released. We were so happy to get it.

I guess I am in the minority here, but I couldn't get into this movie. I love Christmas movies and movies from this era but this movie didn't click with me. The acting isn't bad, but the suiters for our heroine's hand didn't seem convincing and the son, Timmy, just seemed squeaky and annoying.

If you want a great Christmas movie from the 40's, try Christmas in Connecticut! My whole family loves that movie!

3stars - "I guess I'm in the minority here" (Alena)

Ostensibly this is marketed as a holiday film but it's appeal is for all seasons. How rare a romantic film involving a love triangle where all the principals are full-blooded characters. We naturally root for the Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh characters to connect but we have more than a dollop of sympathy for Wendell Corey. Some comic elements but the film smacks of romantic drama. As a bonus Harry Morgan has a terrific bit as a harried police lieutenant. Highly recommended. Torn between giving the film four or five stars but in the spirit of the holidays I'll lean towards the latter.

How can it be that Walter Matthau's best performance, especially a comedy performance, is not available on DVD? It's a shame, because this is arguably the most brilliant dark comedy from that wonderful golden age of grown-up films from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. This movie is way too funny and brilliant to be this undercover and cult. Elaine May is to comedy what Coppola and Scorsese were to drama. Her writing is as good as comedy writing gets, and her performance gives a glimpse at how wonderful a comic actress she really is. No B.S. either. This one of the great comedies. Can't believe it's not on dvd. Not to be missed. I remember seeing this on tv when I was a little girl and thinking, that is a wonderful world those two people live in. It played the midnight show in college and the crowd loved it so much, it played the following week to huge crowds. I rented it ten years ago on VHS, and roared with laughter. It gets better with every viewing. And now, you can't ever see it because it never shows on tv and it's not on dvd. Help!!

Let's play Name Your Favorite Comedy. "Good Morning, Vietnam," "As Good as It Gets,"and "Little Miss Sunshine." Yes, yes, all good. Now consider "A New Leaf." Thought so. You've never heard of it. And that's a shame because this is my favorite comedy and that of other reviewers on this page. Why?

Walter Matthau, a superb actor in any movie, stars with Elaine May, little known as an actress. She wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. There was much controversy behind the scenes, making it run millions over budget. Matthau and May did not get along. But the movie was made and distributed with little publicity.

Why is the film so lauded by those who have seen it? Because it is so funny and matches the two most unlikely pair of characters this side of the moon for marriage. Back to the beginning.

Henry Graham was born rich, lives rich, and awakens one day to discover his inheritance is gone. Having never worked, he is contemptuous of the idea. The only plan is to find a rich women, knock her off on the honeymoon, and inherit once again and become the rich playboy that is his natural right. Oh, add cynicism, world-weariness, rapier wit, and a great dislike of women on general grounds and Henry becomes a problem to himself in acquiring a bride.

One of the funniest scenes in the movie that reveals his utter disregard for women occurs when he is with a woman well-endowed, not only financially but physically. She tells him how much she wants him and begins to undo the top to her swimsuit. He hollers: "Don't let them out, Phyllis, don't let them out!"

There is a bet involving money and his uncle with Henry having so many days to find a woman to marry him. He finds Henrietta , who is as klutzy and naive as he is sophisticated and cynical. He and his manservant continuously remove bread crumbs and new dress labels from her person, before she is presentable for going to teach botany at the local college. Henry must also deal with her bloated, unnecessary, useless, freeloading house staff.

Through her goofy style Henrietta convinces Henry to accompany her on her annual trip to find an unnamed fern to name after her and live in posterity. The second funniest moment comes when Henrietta cannot get her arms and head in the right places in her Venetian nightgown on the honeymoon. I fell on the floor laughing at this scene.

Suffice it to say, Henry does not kill Henrietta. In fact, the ending is just a beautiful thing--very low-keyed, seeming very ordinary but quite momentous--just like this fabulous film! Highly recommended!

Everyone should see this wonderful, delightful film. It is hands down the funniest film I have ever seen. The dialogue is sharp, the actors are superb both central charters and supporting characters. My only regret is that it is an old film and not at the moment available on DVD format. It should be. A true classic in every sense. The story is about a man of wealth and refinement who looks down his nose on almost everyone, his wealth ends through his own mismanagement, and all that he holds dear is within a hair's breath of being taken away from him and an apalling life of being "poor" is staring him in the face. He resolves, much to his chagrin, he must marry a wealthy woman, preferably without any close relatives, so he may "opportunely" dispose of her, gain her wealth and continue to live in the manner to which he has been accustomed all his life. The "opportune" woman presents herself in the form of Henrietta, portrayed to perfection by Elaine May. Walter Matthau's character, Henry, moves forward with his plan for personal gain, at any cost, but in the end, he is redeemed. His redemption is discovering, to his astonishment, he loves (that unfamiliar emotion he has lived without all his life)Henrietta. He finds that moment of revelation at the very nanosecond of wish fulfillment, when he is at the perfect place and time to discreetly "dispose" of Henrietta and make it look like an accident. He is about to take the fatal step of walking away while Henrietta is about to meet her demise, when reaching into his pocket, he finds his tiny bit of immortality Henrietta has bestowed upon him, missing. The new leaf Henrietta the botanist has named for him. At that moment Henrietta saves Henry from himself and against all odds, Henry becomes a caring and compassionate human being. The whole film is a true comedic treasure I enjoyed from beginning to end. Please take the time to find it in your local video store or sometimes on cable. The funniest and most touching movie I have ever seen.

When you think about some of the expensive, terrible new movies that go straight to DVD, and here you have a proven classic that can't get transferred from VHS to DVD it makes no sense...

5stars - "Helloooo Paramount, anybody there???" (Jazzfan)

Without a doubt, Elaine May is no technical stylist. At first, this plainspoken directing style may feel a bit clunky. But the story does build cumulative force. By the time Matthau's character meets May's, things really take off.

It would be very interesting to see the additional ninety minutes that were cut without her approval. That being said, it feels just the right length as it now exists. It's hard to imagine the missing blackmail footage as being anything else than too much of a good thing. If the content of the movie is being altered, then one should side with the director. However, if the movie is excessively long, then in at least some cases the studio or producer may be in the right.

Outside of the too conventional ending, the movie does feel like it's completely her own. It has an uncommon rigour that avoids for the most part the usual commercial formula. No teary eyed close ups or treacly moralizing here. The suits may have chopped the movie, but the soul remains wholely intact.

It would be no exaggeration to say that this compares favorably with The Front Page, His Girl Friday, All About Eve, or the best from Preston Sturges.

One of the rarest of things, a Hollywood film where the human element trumps the technical side.
