Liza Minelli is such a brilliantly expressive actor and dancer, that she can overcome any tired cliche that's thrown at her (starting with the title of this film), and this one has cliches that weren't even cliches in 1991. She's so great in every scene that the viewer forgets that the talents of Andrea Martin, for example, are wasted. Wasted. Shelley Winters gets a slightly better chance to show her skills, as the wizened, retired theatre exponent who nonetheless plays piano part-time for the troupe, almost *defiantly* lousy. (But at the big show, there she is in the orchestra pit!).
Yes, men are beasts throughout this early-era militant feminist flick. The only non-beast is the solitary xy-entity in the class, a sissified straight guy, badly acted and terrifically danced by Bill Irwin.
Liza plays a very talented but luckless dancer, good enough to be a successful understudy for a Broadway musical, but with a seven year period of rejection. She moves on to teaching dance during the day and singing in boyfriends' sorta jazz-rock group at night. Talkin' 'bout "beasts", this dude is a real sullen one; he's splittin' for the coast despite his lady's committment to a charity and the discovery that he's gonna be a daddy. As much as Irwin overacts, this guy is like some Kris Kristofferson wannabe, without the cigarettes and major chords. Amazing how the progressive, independent, intellectual Mavis (LM) has hooked up with this downbeat, self-absorbed bar band legend. She looks him straight in the eye and says, most demonstratively, she may or may not let the child be born, anyway. She'll telephone him when she works that part out. Her charity seems to extend to raising money for groups of people but not extending the gift of life to one. That's her Constitutional right...but it's a depressing turn in the character development for this plotline.
Another bad guy is the violent husband of another dancer, a meek, peaceful soul who works her heart out for the homeless, but somewhere along the way married a class-A humiliator, and over-rated Corporate climber. He shows up at the benefit to rip his wife away from the proceedings - but her meek male counterpart, Irwin, throws a punch at this guy...and he ducks away. Earlier, she established that the answer to a horrible marriage is to filander with the dancing partner. Interesting.
The movie spends alot of time with the back-stories of the dancers - a la "A Chorus Line" - and not enough with the actual footwork. How in the heck could they get that great with Shelley playing "chopsticks" in three tempos all day. And why wasn't she relegated to part-time receptionist [no sexism intended] when Irwin demonstrates a boogie woogie piano style that would turn Jerry Lee Lewis' head? No, no - we'll stick with Shelley and the play-by-numbers.
Okay, if we're gonna keep our shaky keyboardist, how can we polish our act? She's not exactly resourceful on the 88s. The film should have spent some kind of time on how these amateurs delt with *that* challenge.
In the end, we have the kind of Hollywood Musical that Liza Minelli's Mother and friend/co-worker Mickey Rooney excelled at. And the finale does have that "feel good" feeling - but coming from the dancing, from teamwork, not from assertions of independence.
And we have an added element to the big finale - Mavis gave birth! She didn't abort the child because she was too busy being a humanitarian!!

Viewing Stepping Out with my daughter, who is a dancer, has become a wonderful and regular pastime in our house. Liza Minelli is phenomenal in this film whether singing, acting, or dancing. Even though the film is Liza's vehicle, the superb cast of dancing actors holds its own against her talent. Each character reminds us of someone we know. Each character becomes a beloved friend as the plot develops. I'm going to write to Paramount and ask that it be made into a DVD. This lovely film deserves to be preserved for my daughter's daughters! Engaging, funny, dramatic, and full of music, this film is a must-see for fans of all musical theater

This ballet workout is wonderful. I feel like I'm taking ballet classes again! Absolute beginners may find it a little bit difficult at first or confusing because you need to learn the basics from a teacher who can see you and correct you. It's all about correct posture in ballet...but for me it's perfect. I have taken ballet classes on and off since I was a child. I love this workout because you can't get bored with it. It's very artistic and the music is just wonderful. You can choose classical music or contemporary music. I personally enjoy them both! VERY VERY HAPPY WITH THIS!:)

I just got this video a couple of weeks ago, and it's amazing. It works out every single muscle and it's fun to do. I'm not a dancer anymore, although I was about ten years ago....so I understand the moves a little better than your average. But my husband has been doing the video with me, and he's having a great time too with no dance experience at all. Highly recommend this video to anyone. You can spend thousands on gym equipment you'll never use...or spend 10$ and get this.

After using the NYC Ballet workout for a while it just seemed redundant. So I searched on the internet and bought the best workout I have found to date. It's called BalletSport and it is designed by a dancer that was with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. It is amazing. It is not on Amazon but I bought it on their website.

All I can say is wow!!! I did read some reviews before purchasing this dvd but you know what you have to experience doing the movements yourself and give your own review. I love this dvd!!! I did take some african dance classes when I was young. So I did recognize some of the movements and let me tell you I was looking for something I could sweat to and believe me when I say I have found it. This dvd is fun and will get you to sweating from the warm into the dances. I am glad I brought it and will be working out to it every chance I get.

Though we learned many steps from this video, we think an initial lesson on the step-slide is required for the raw beginner. A little less he-hawing around and an additional step would make this video more valuable to the purchaser. We hope the same couple will do a follow-up DVD.

4stars - "Good for the intermediate, but you'll still need a first lesson" (Phillip I. Good)

I've looked at a number of tapes and DVDs lately, including three that this same couple have made. This tape (and others in the set) are far and away the best in terms of showing the steps (men first, then women, then together) and providing important details that others leave out entirely (how to hold your hands to make a turn). The jokes are corny but I think they present a good picture of some very personable dancers. I'm a beginning dancer (although I'm over 50) and this tape has allowed me and a partner to learn enough steps to be able to dance together at a nightclub. We'll be even better with more practice. I haven't seen a tape or DVD which does a better job. I wish they had a version for Rumba.

I saw other people dancing 2-step. I wanted to learn it & therefore bought this tape & try. The type runs for about 1 hour & teaches from basic step to about 10 different patterns, which is enough for doing a dance without repeating the same patterns too often. I learned from it by playing back twice, followed the steps & practiced without a partner. Then I went to the dance floor to do the 2-step for the 1st time with a partner who is a beginner dancer. I was happy that I could lead & dance it out. Although the first time was not very smooth, after several times I can dance 2-step to the music without difficulty now. This is really a good instructional video & worth the money. I like the instructors too.

But it would have come in handy when we visited Nashville and everyone was doing line dances we hadn't learned yet! They go through step and arm movements very thoroughly and make it easy to learn!

I've done this tape/dvd about 120x from 1999-2006 -- only because there wasn't anything better at the time. It's what you'd call an 'old stand-by'. Nothing outstanding to recommend itself by todays standards in production or intellectual 'snap', but not the worst thing you will ever own as far as a ballet dvd goes.

It's stand-out points include: an overcrowded class, ancient hyper-extended stretches, ugly costumes, an akward piano score, uninspiring stressful undertones, and a forced and failed attempt at grace - but all that said, it IS a ballet class! There is no getting away from that. It might be a ballet class from 1981, and you'd probably assume there'd be some redeeming nostalgia about that, but, no, it must have been a bad filming day.

Back when I used to first do it, I never liked it but, it was the best there was, and I was bloody grateful and probably would have given it a much more glowing review 8 years ago. Now, tho? It's not worth the money in my opinion. Get Dmitri Roudnev's Ballet Class with Dmitri Roudnev (Demonstration of exercises for music of Best of Ballet Class Vol V) and be truly inspired by a worthy ballet class. (see my unabashed, miles-long, glowing review of Dmitri's DVD.)

I've seen a lot, a lot, a lot of good reviews for this tape/dvd, The Ballet Workout. I believe they stem from the same gratitude my only positive feelings about it do, as well. Honestly, back in the day, there was this ballet class to buy - and that's it. And because it covers 'basic ballet' the gratitude for this even existing for home use was, understandably, overwhelming when it was reviewed in the past. But it doesn't hold up any more for that singular reason, and thankfully, others have come along to replace this stiff class that always made me feel like the tention in it would make it blow apart at the seams.

Is it the worst ballet dvd you could by? Is it a waste of money? No. It really isn't. You do ballet exercises in it. It's a hard class. If it was the only ballet class left in the world, I'd again, be thrilled to have it. It takes itself very seriously. It's akward, stiff, static, and tense. There's almost zero joy in it. It reminds me of what taking ballet in prison would be like, except that's an insult to anyone studying ballet in prision.

Is the Ballet Workout a treasure? Beautiful? Uplifting? Inspiring? No. It's just an old tired, ballet class now, and not wonderfully 'old' in that you can learn marvellous timeless things from it. Just old. Tired. Done. And not what my ballet class dreams are made of.

2stars - "Old, Old, Old...and time to be retired" (matureballerina.com)

I own all three of the Ballet Workout DVD's. This one is my second favorite out of the three, and the best place to start if you've never had ballet before. It's structured like a ballet class (floor work, barre work, and center work). You don't need a barre. I use a chair.

I took ballet for 10 years when I was younger, so I knew all of the terms used in this DVD. There is a lot of time spent demonstrating and explaining the terms, so people who don't know ballet should be able to stay caught up.

The patterns are very simple and very repetitive, so it doesn't take many repeated viewings to learn them.

Some of the stretches require good flexibility (especially the level two workout) so I couldn't do a lot of them all the way at first. The people in the video are professional dancers, so of course they make it look easy. Just do what you can do and don't worry about the people on the TV.

You can tell just by watching that this was filmed in the 80's, so it's old. On some of the stretches she tells you to bounce. Don't. People don't bounce anymore. It''s bad because it doesn't let you ease into the strech and can force you to go to far too fast.

This is a good video to start with. I don't use mine anymore because I find the patterns repetitive and boring now, but if you don't know what you're doing the repetitiveness is good. My favorite DVD is the second one, but it is faster paced and you need to know what all the ballet terms mean.

3stars - "A good place to start." (Blonde Bookworm)

This DVD features two ballet classes. The first says it is for people with little or no ballet experience, but it is more geared toward the person who has a distant memory of ballet classes she took as a little girl. As a 36 year old who never took ballet as a child, I would have benefitted from a little more time devoted to the basic positions. Although I have watched hundreds of ballet classes, I have not participated before, and I found it difficult to maintain the positions during the simple combinations. A little more time devoted to simply coming back to first would have been a help for me.

That said, it is a much better video for beginners than the New York City Ballet Workout, which has more complicated combinations and assumes a fair amount of knowledge.

The other thing that could improve this video would be to have the teacher show the combination once before having the students follow. The first time watching the video, you're not quite sure what she is going to do next, which makes it hard to follow. Of course, this isn't a problem with repeated viewings.

In all, I think it's a good product and especially good for people with a little ballet background. It is a very simple ballet class with easily assimilated combinations, and ballet classes are always a good workout that use every muscle.

Melissa and her husband Jory danced with us when we were just a small midwest company. I was the very lucky one to dance with both of them up close and personal and what a thrill it was.
I now have my own studio and have sent this video to my adult students that want to work out at home. She and Jory know their stuff and they are the finest/nicest dancers and teachers around.

Okay, let's look at the date of composition. The comments about camera angle and technical filming are irrelevant. This video is full of excellent instruction that engages a child in dance without stressing the particulars of turnout, etc. For a very young child of 2-4 it helps them to engage with someone other than their parent in an activity that is probably new to them. I have this program on VHS... sure that's how big a spread of children I have... and am now looking to buy it on DVD because the other one is WORN OUT. Coupe the cricket still reigns in our house, long after the teenagers have become too busy to take dance lessons!

I bought this video for my daughters who were too shy to be in a ballet class with all the other children. This video was just like being in the class. Literally. They basically set up a video camera in one corner of the dance studio and filmed the class. So it get a bit boring for my little ones to see the same scenery, etc. and it's like watching a home video. That said, my oldest appreciated that "it was just like our ballet class" and enjoyed learning the steps and terminology. This is a decent substitute if you can't enroll your children in a real pre-ballet class.

I purchased A Fantasy Garden Ballet Class and its sequel A Fantasy Garden Ballet class II for my 2 year old daughter who is not quite old enough for a dance class. She absolutely loves watching it and loves Miss Rosemary, she sings along with the songs and participates as if she's part of the class on the tv. I have used it with my preschool class in the winter when we can't get out to exercise and even the boys like it. It has great little songs to do along with ballet stretches. The children love that there are small children (aged 4-6) showing the stretches. I love that the music is quiet and soft flowing so that it keeps the kids calm instead of getting them too hyped up. I give this movie 5 stars.

As a ballet teacher looking for a method that would teach 3 and 4 yr olds technique, but still keep their attention, the songs on this were perfect and I wanted to adjust movements. The only problem was that there is no CD available, so I ended up not really using this DVD and just coming up with my own syllabus.

DO NOT BUY THIS VIDEO!! Save your money! This one of the most poorly done instructional videos I have seen! I hope following reasons will help others to make a more informed choice:1. Video: Quality was very poor as ,any instructional videos tend to be.2. Sound: For some reason the instructers voice was dubbed with another voice. But the dubbing was only occasionally, so you end up with the instructor speaking partly with her voice and partly with it dubbed. It makes no sense and was very annoying to listen to.3. Footwork: The footwork was shown very fast paced which makes it very difficult to understand and replicate the steps even after multiple viewings.I have been dancing for many years but have just begun Salsa dancing. I have seen many instructional videos but have never seen one as poorly put together as this one. For people looking for a suggestion as to a good Salsa choice in an instructional video, Learn to Salsa Vol 1 & 2 with Tenia. I very well produced video series with great instructional footage.

i'm an intermediate/advance dancer - the steps are great for beginners - i found the steps too basic for intermediate dancers.The quality of the tape is not that great (can't get a clear picture when you pause it or slow-play it :(lessons are explained very thoroughly - i would recommend this video to intermediate/beginner dancers.

This video is great for intermediate-advanced level salsa dancers who want to learn or sharpen their salsa variations. The video features Josie Neglia and her assistant who are excellent at breaking down each step both male and female and once completed they dance the variation to music at least twice. The moves are classified as level III & IV salsa and indeed they are intermediate to advance steps. The video goes through each routine clearly and concisely which prevents the viewer from being overwhelmed. This video can meet the needs of salsa dancers who are at the intermediate level and wish to perfectionize their moves and beginners who are ready to try more difficult steps. I strongly recommend this video as it displays great choreography, coordination and is well organized from start to finish.

5stars - "Great learning tool for Salsa level 3/4" (Marianopolita2005)

This video is definitely not for beginners! Get the first video if you are, there are plenty of nice steps and variations there. Josie breaks down each partners step individually, making it easy to follow. The level 4 part "Hot steps and trick" (or something like that) is pretty lame for my taste. I was expecting more partner to partner dancing but turned out to be include several solo steps. Overall, I found this tape to be very good for two reasons: 1. She knows how to dance!!! (unlike some other video instructors) 2. Each step is repeated at least four times before moving on to the next.

4stars - "Very well broken down" (Luis R. Garcia)

Many of the dance videos are too basic. This one may err the other way. I had taken a Salsa class, so thought I could move to levels three and four. I was wrong. I'll see what happens when I go back to the first tape which has levels I & II. Although they do go through the steps slowly, one time, because there are so many combinations, it requires multiple replays for me to get the hang of it. I would much prefer to have seen them break down the steps one at a time rather than doing the whole combination. I'll check back in after trying the more basic steps.

I agree with the awful teaching, but what was worse for me was the camera angles. We need to see the WHOLE BODY, people!! Showing a close-up of the torso while trying to get certain steps down is ridiculous! Getting creative with camera angles is not helpful during an instructional video. The best thing to do is just set the camera steady and let us see the whole body.

This video was great if you're a beginner. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, and my friends were still amazed by the dance moves I got down! You only have to watch it like 10 times, and it is SO WORTH IT!!!! But I think it's only for Beginners-Advanced Dancers.

5stars - "OMGOSH!!!!" (Yeah)

This is a fun video to watch and it has a good message. But its NOT as easy as "1,2,3". I teach some of these same moves to my students and we have to take a great deal of time with each element of the more complex steps. This video is great if you can already dance this style and just want to learn some new moves. But it will be very dissapointing for someone who has never tried this before. I have it in DVD and that allows me to review and slow down the action much easier than you could with VHS. Still, it is challenging. Worth having, but not as a first instructional. Also, it is a bit dated by todays standards. But still fun.

It also does not help that the camera seems to be on a slight angle. Many times it is also in so close you can't see feet when he's telling you to step. I've been a dancer for 20 years and was too frustrated to finish the video.
