This video is appropriate for people who have no interest in a yoga workout whatsoever. It is slow, ineffective, and short. More time is spent reading the warnings than doing any real yoga. The am portion is so slow it will put you right back to sleep. Save your money! Buy a real yoga video!

When I cannot get to a Yoga class this short (20 minute) tape is very helpful.
I was especially pleased to be able to get a VCR tape since I don't have a DVD
player in my room.
I like the AM Yoga, but found the PM Yoga tape too difficult for me.

These videos each have their strong points, and I've used and enjoy them both. The biggest flaw is that, as a set, they are so out of balance with each other. As other reviewers have mentioned, the A.M. video is substantially easier than the P.M., so folks who want a good workout dislike the first, and those who are a bit out of shape dislike the second.

I use the A.M. when I feel like I need something easy and gentle, and when I lapse in practicing yoga for a while, this is invariably the tape I come back to, to get me going again. (I move on to the Yoga for Energy DVD in this Gaiam/Yoga Journal series, once I loosen up again, though.)

The P.M. video just about killed me when I first tried it. However, the moment when all that vigorous stretching is finished, and you finally go into relaxation feels sooo good. (Like the old joke: "Why are you hitting yourself?""Because it feels so good when I stop!") So, I come back to this tape, when I have time in the afternoon. And I've improved enough so that the poses don't seem too difficult now, but they still push me to my limit before that golden moment of relaxation.

i'v had this dvd for years but never tried it. i have been suffering from hip pain, not when i walk but after i sit for a while and then get up, it hurts and i limp. i decided to try this dvd and after a few days the hip problem is no longer a problem so i am very happy with the quick results! am is easier than pm but i keep at it and i'm sure i'll get better with time.

Simply, this is a very good place for beginners to start. With all of the different tapes, forms and variations of forms available it can be confusing for beginners (like myself). From scratch I learned the form presented in about a month. However, some very important facts were not explained like: What form is taught on the tape? Is the set presented only one segment of the Yang long form? The title is Tai Chi for Health Vol. 1 In order to learn the complete form I'm guessing you need the other Vols. Where can they be found?

Here's a video I go back to over and over again as reference for basic moves in Tai Chi. It's a down-to-earth, easy to follow video that tells you want you need and want to know.The pace of this video is perfect. While some tapes spend so much time on "warm-ups". Warm-ups are here, but they don't get in the way of your jumping into the Tai Chi moves that you really want to learn. Some tapes are so full of various production trappings that it becomes confusing when watching the split-screens and their almost psychedelic methods of transition. This tape is a straight-shooter that doesn't bore you, confuse you, or have you doing things early in the process that only turn you off from learning Tai Chi. If there's a negative, it's that it seems the primary demonstrator, Yvette Wong, who does such an outstanding job on this video, seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. When you start watching, you see that this tape is referred to as Vol. 1, but I've never seen Vol. 2. Maybe I need to do more searching. Also, this would be great in a DVD format, and I wish someone would reissue it in that format. This is a real gem, it makes you want to learn, it never annoys you, it's just the best. To Yvette and the second demonstrator Ray Van Raamsdonk, I say BRAVO.

This video is one of the classics of yoga videos - it is filmed beautifully and the instruction is perfect - clear and gentle, which is not suprise given the instructors background, a true yoga instructor.

The poses are accessible to anyone and there is nothing that should be too difficult no matter where your practice stands (I am more towards beginner). The breath work alone makes this a worthwhile addtion.

A must have DVD

This is still the best-selling yoga video of all time, and for a reason: Meditative but not boring music, an unpretentious leader in Erich Schiffman, poses that flow from one to the other, something for the beginner and something for the more advanced, and the most simple, wise meditation at the end. I am still using it and buying it in new formats after 15 years of yoga practice. Yoga video teachers, this is what excellence looks like!

I found this tape at my local library. I've tried others that were too fast, too challenging & too boring. I though I'd never learn to like yoga. After checking it out a few times, I'd found I was adicted & had to get my own copy. It's a great stress reliever, it just stretches away the day's tenison. There is a morning & evening routine so you just do a few minutes morning & night. There's even a meditation at the end. Dixie's video is challenging, yet not too difficult. Try it & you'll love it too. I reccomend this to everyone who has never done yoga, but has always wanted to learn.Cristy

I agree that this video is good one for beginners, but although I am a beginner myself I feel the poses are not challenging enough in general. Because the video is made into 2 sessions, one morning session and one evening session, there are 2 cool down sessions as well. The actual work out is rather short.There aren't many motions for the upper body (shoulders, neck, abs) either; Dixie focuses on the bottom half. If you are looking for light exercise and good stretches, this is it. It does help you relax.But if you can sit on the floor with the sole of your feet touching each other and bend forward with your head almost touching the ground, I say get something more challenging. (This motion is easier than it sounds.)

Back pain and headache became a constant for me following an accident back in 1981. Many painful years and far too many pain pills later, I broke down and bought a yoga tape because so many people advised me to try yoga for relief. That wonderful day was over 6 years ago, and I have not missed ONE day doing yoga since then. Dixie's tape introduced me to positions gradually and allowed me to ease into getting the full benefits from what yoga has to offer. Her easy going nature and sense of humor made me relax and enjoy each session. The tape is broken down into two 30 minute segments - day yoga and night time yoga. The time frames make it possible to fit into your daily schedule and you don't have to be a human pretzel to achieve the positions done in this tape. I've purchased this tape as a gift for several friends and have been thanked MANY times over for doing so. I can't deal with the irritating and pretentious ''gurus'' on other tapes, so this tape is perfect for me. The twenty minute morning workout features exercises for both strength and flexibility, the evening segment is primarily stretching and relaxation. Twenty minutes doesn't sound like very long, but these poses are challenging. Dixie's unassuming demeanor is so fun... it's like working out with your cool aunt who is visiting from the south. I love it.

I have been taking yoga classes for some time and have a few of Rodney Yee's tapes. He has a quiet, soothing manner and the scenery is lovely. The only problem that I have with this and some of his other videos are that sometimes when he is coaching the viewer's breathing, he neglects to follow through.

After suffering with back pain for months and using doctor prescribed strong painkillers, I got very little relief and wasn't keen on continuing using painkillers long term. Gradually I started researching alternatives and read reviews for this video and bought it. I don't have enough good things to say about this video, it gave me relief within days, I don't have back pain anymore. Now I use this tape just for stretching after a long day at work. I like Rodney Yee's calming voice, he has a pleasant face and the background music is soothing too. After this yoga I feel relaxed and can sleep better, this is a great buy for those with lower back pain.

The number of amazon friends who voted on this yoga tape immediately impressed this reviewer! There must be a tremendous market for home self-care. Rodney Yee creates a nice, mellow mood, with soothing background music. The production value is high. The pace is pleasant and not too fast. I was surprised by those who wrote that Yee moves too quickly. I politely disagree! My wife brought me 2 yoga tapes- Yee's and one with a female instructor. I tried the latter, thinking she would be less aggressive. Wrong! I had to discard that one immediately. Yee is far easier on a new guy- and his back! There seems to be disagreement on the tape's length. The answer must lie in the promotional material at the start. Simply fast forward until the instruction starts. I did notice that Rodney got left and right mixed up. In those instances, I do what he says and not as he does. Am I the only reviewer who picked up on this? I am happy for those who claim this tape is a virtual miracle. More power to them! For the rest of us, "Back Care Yoga" is a nice, safe, reliable, low- key tape; just right for the hesitant beginner. On the same subject, amazoners may wish to read Dr. John Sarno's "Healing Back Pain". The two are quite compatible! The best of luck to all those searching for a little relief in life. BCY should help attain it.

I found this DVD to provide a good stretch. It was slow and boring, though, and not at all a workout. I couldn't even do the whole thing without a break, because I was too bored. I found Shiva Rea's omission of the "h" in exhale annoying, as someone else here mentioned. The 3 different options for modifications was helpful, though for several of the poses, the woman in her 3rd trimester didn't seem to be doing much at all, it was so modified. I'm in my 3rd trimester, but followed the woman in her 2nd with no problems. If you want something really mellow to stretch and relax, this is a good choice. If you really want to exercise and maintain muscle tone during your pregnancy, look elsewhere.

i am a reasonably fit and healthy young woman in my early 20's, and was a regular at my local gym and cycling class for several months before i got pregnant. after i got pregnant and had to take a break from my routine because of horrible all-day-sickness and exhaustion i was looking for something gentle, but still somewhat challenging, to ease me back into a more regular routine again. i picked up this dvd because i thought prenatal yoga would be fun and relaxing. i have never really done yoga before and thought it would be a nice change of pace to learn something new. i am VERY DISAPPOINTED in this dvd...

the instructor has absolutely no personality, and her tone of voice is completely flat and unmotivated. her long-winded introduction that has to be watched before the workout, EVERY TIME, is more irritating every time i hear it, and the terrible voice-over instructions are not even timed correctly. some exercises don't even match up with her instructions! the music is slow, boring, and uninspiring. the poses are far too short, and only a few of them even make me feel like i am doing anything at all! there are too many variations of the "triangle pose", which i am REALLY sick of now; it feels like i just keep doing the same thing over and over again the whole time!

i'm not at all experienced with yoga, but this has got to be one of the most boring, ineffective workouts i've ever tried, and i have done the whole routine beginning to end about six times to be sure i wasn't doing something wrong! when it's over i just want to fold into "child's pose" and go to sleep! i'm looking for something more motivating and challenging! if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

I borrowed this a few times early on in my second trimester and thought it was boring and too slow, so bought another faster paced pre-natal yoga workout. then when my pregnancy progressed and i started having more aches and pains, the faster dvd was too much, and i went back to shiva rea. Now its definately the right pace for me, and its a good allover workout. I would say its a bit slow for first tri and early second tri, but its great for the second half of second tri and third tri. I think its a great investment and i plan to use right up to my due date and maybe afterwards as well.

Sara presents a series of poses on this DVD which help form a basis of starting a yoga practice with very through and precise instruction and alignment, which is important and then provides some additional more challenging material - challenging in the sense that it really is for beginners but a bit of a step up.

It is a good reference DVD to form a nice groundwork and one of a couple I refer to now for my practice.

I am a neophyte when it comes to yoga, and in many respects this DVD was an excellent resource. Instructor Sara Ivanhoe, who is clearly an accomplished yoga instructor, walks the viewer through the most basic "daily dozen" yoga moves in about 45 minutes. Each move is explained carefully and is held for six breaths as Ms. Ivanhoe demonstrates the move. From this foundation, Ms. Ivanhoe explains slightly more advanced poses and techniques, but we're definitely talking approachable, manageable stuff for beginners.

All this is supplemented by the usual "For Dummies" learning aids, like mythbusters and jargon translators. All in all, this is a helpful introduction to the world of yoga.

Why only four stars? Because the workout moves so slowly. After the second time through the DVD, I didn't need the detailed explanation of each move and simply wanted Ms. Ivanhoe to guide me through the workout without exposition. Unfortunately, there is no "efficient workout" option on the menu, so once you're familiar with the poses, you're going to need to keep the remote handy so you can fastforward through her speeches.

This is nothing against Ms. Ivanhoe as an instructor - she's both knowledgeable and, admittedly, very easy on the eyes. I'm not getting dirty here - it's essential for a beginner to watch how to do these poses correctly, so it helps to have an attractive, proficient instructor when you're watching the same thing over and over again.

So while a yoga DVD is preferable to a yoga book in that you get to watch an actual person do the entire pose - as opposed to a mere snapshot contained in a book - the inability to excise the lengthy exposition of each pose is a bit of a problem. Therefore, the DVD isn't excellent and isn't worth five stars. But it's clearly worth four, and any beginner should give it a try before spending money on an expensive yoga class.

This is a great addtion to the beginners library of yoga... however, after you've watched it more than 2 or 3 times you're going to be ready for something new. The teacher does an excellent job discribing the postures, however this may become TOO much once you're ready to start flowing in your postures. I borrowed this from the library because of the reviews stating it was so basic that you might only watch it a few times. I plan to buy it now though because it is so helpful to an absolute beginner like myself and the slower pace is more relaxing to me. I believe the Yoga for Dummies will better prepare me for the Yoga Journal DVDs which I also enjoy, but am not quite ready for yet.

I'd also mention that my eight year old loves to do this with me and asked me to purchase more of Sara Ivanhoe's DVDs.

I got this tape as a present for my birthday.I think it is a really good yoga tape.Jane Fonda really makes yoga fun and easy.This tape is ideal for experienced yoga people as it is for non-yoga people.

"Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" is one of the first exercise videos I bought, and it's still one of my favorites!

Jane starts out with a 20-minute stretching/toning routine that consists of a number of different poses. Next, she focuses on the Sun Salutation and leads you through a 15-minute segment based on the one sequence. She starts with the easiest variation of the routine, and gradually increases the intensity. Experienced yoga practitioners can repeat Level 3 (the most difficult level) three times, while beginners can stick to Level 1 (the easiest level). Throughout the segment, she repeats her demonstration of the lower levels for newbies. Jane finishes with a 15-minute relaxation routine. While some people might enjoy this section the most, I generally skip it.

Since beginning yoga, I've bought a number of other yoga instructionals, all on DVD; "Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" is the only VHS tape I own. As much as I like the workout, as well as Jane's easygoing teaching style, I don't use the tape as much as I should. I just don't find the VHS tape as convenient as the DVDs, which usually have short segments that you can easily navigate through (many even let you customize your own workout). It would be great if they released "Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" on a DVD format (hint, hint, guys!). Other than this minor complaint, though, I'd definitely recommend "Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" to beginners and intermediates alike (advanced users might want to stick to some of Rodney Yee's more difficult workouts).

The tape offers three levels, thus bringing this particular series of poses into the range of even the beginning student. "Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise Workout" is not only the most wonderful introduction to Yoga, but it makes you want to come back for more. Although I work out several times a week, I am new to Yoga, and was absolutly amazed at how I felt after just the first class. It gave me energy, improved my balance(when you get to be a "certain age", these things start to dwindle), andleft me feeling like I'd done a real workout.Even my abs felt it!Jane encouragingly guides you through the three segments of this tape. In the first segment she takes you through the most gentle yet invigorating 20 minutes of stretching and toning in which you will also be introduced to the movements and the terminology.There are times when the level of movement is increased, but Jane reminds us to just do the level we feel most comfortable with and there are insets showing the different levels we can follow.In the next segment you'll be learning the Yoga Sun Salutation. It is a progressive routine that picks up the pace as it goes along, but again Jane let's you know it's okay to go at your own pace. This segment lasts about 15 minutes, but it's a truly effective program.The last 15 minutes may be the most wonderful 15 minutes you can spend in a day. The time is spent strictly on relaxation techniques, that will make you feel wonderful as well as relieve stress. This is a section that you can do anytime you feel the need, as no warm up is required.I have had this tape some time now, and although it took me a few times before I completed the whole tape, each time I used it I felt a renewed energy and good about myself. Five stars to Jane and this class for turining me from a skeptic to a believer. I started out adding this just once a week to my work out program, I now incorporate it twice weekly and I really look foward to those days. It's truly a great workout for any age.I also think you can't go wrong for the price. If it's something you've been wanting to try, you can do it without investing too much, and after a while if you decide you want to move on to a more powerful workout, this tape has given you a great start!What a Feeling!...enjoy...Laurie

This was the first yoga workout tape I ever bought. At first when I started doing it, I had to keep looking at the tv to make sure I was doing the moves right. But I after did it several times, I got to where I could do it without having to look at the tv. In fact, she says you will get to where you can do it just by following her voice. She gives excellent cues for each move and breathing. I do this workout at least once a week and have really increased my felxiblity. I really love stretching exercises, and this is an excellent whole body stretch. I love the way she has you flow from one position to another. It's almost as if it is all one move. Great for anyone that is just beginning in yoga, or for someone that has been doing yoga for awhile and wants a nice change of pace.

This is indeed "yoga for the rest of us." No need to be a beginner with joints that bend like Mr. Bill's. The people in this yoga tape range from about 38 to 70 years old and for every pose there are options for those wishing more stretch, or less. Chairs can even be used. I reviewed every yoga tape in our public library, looking for one that gave us the benefits of a yoga workout without leaving us in knots. A great entry into yoga for almost any age group! My only suggestion, as these poses are very well demonstrated, is that someone totally new to yoga would find a visit to a yoga workshop helpful to get going. I give this an A for being a really great beginning for anyone needing to stretch and strengthen his body and balance. An A for being super for seniors, as well.

I am inflexible and have been working to try to gain it back before I lose it. I am not that old and should be more flexible.

This DVD is one I would recommend for anyone who is inflexible. The instructor is excellant with very good instructions for the main sections covered that are seated, standing and sun salutations. These are done in manner that are easy to follow and work with and I found them all doable though for me the seated and standing were good to start with before trying the sun salutations.

Highly recommended

This yoga video is as it is described Yoga for the Rest of Us. It is ideal for anyone starting out and also great for anyone who wants to follow a basic practice. It is designed to accomodate those with physical limitations, lack of experience as well as those with a knowledge and ability with yoga. As a yoga teacher I frequently recommend this video as one that is accessable to many and very safe to do alone. Peggy Cappy's style is open and clear.

I have a 9 yr old boy who is decidedly UNflexible, and a 6 yr old daughter who is a natural-born dancer. They both enjoy this video, and certain parts of it are challenging to either one, but not so hard that they feel defeated. I find it relieves stress, but I must add a large part of this comes from their mockery of the teacher and her pronunciation of the position names! I don't find the video particularly girly; there is an older boy on the video, and it does emphasize strength, not just flexibility. It's been a good introduction to yoga, and gets us moving. We enjoy this tape a lot!

I have a 9-year-old boy, a 7-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy. All of my children love doing this workout. Even though it is designed for older kids, my 4-year-old still enjoys following along as best he can. My daughter especially likes it, but I was pleasantly surprised that my oldest boy enjoys it too. I really like the instructor--she explains things thoroughly and has a patient but energetic demeanor without being cheesy or patronizing. This was just what I was looking for!

My group of kids ages 6 -11 all love this video. It's a riot to see them all trying the different poses. They ask for this video on an "indoor day" when it is snowing or raining. Even the most awkward kids enjoy trying because it is very low key and presented as a learning experience. They are often surprised at what they can do!!

I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 3 years, and I found this video to be not kid-oriented enough. The set is lush with sweeping curtains, tall windows and chandaliers, the instructor is dressed in a buxom-enhancing babe-like fashion. Her delivery is not fun but patronizing. I'm going to keep searching because my son who is 8 wants to do yoga but found this princess girlie-style video to be completely uninspiring.
