5stars - "Come To The Stable" (K. Smith)

I wish to add my opinion about this film--I have watched it and watched for it seasonally since first seeing it on the tiny snowy screen of my parents TV.
It is an enchanting film. In the best traditions of the Christmas films of the 1940s and 1950s. It is a tale of blind faith overcoming a powerful villian who is blocking the path of the faithful. In many ways it does bare a strong resemblance to "Lilies of the Field" and "The Bells of St. Mary"
Knowing that many older films have been lost forever, I hope there is still a good copy available to restore and transfer to DVD soon. This is a charming story with fine preformances, the family can enjoy year after year.

My wife has been asking for this movie for years. Growing up, each and every holiday season she, and her family, would sit around the television and enjoy this heartwarming film. If only it were available on DVD! I'd love to fulfill her wish and present it to her this holiday season. Too bad another year will pass without being able to purchase it.

If any of you happen to see it listed in your local TV Guide this holiday season, be sure to give it a chance. I've yet to see it but she tells me it's a great Christmas film.

Wonderful old movie, have to watch it every Christmas along with It's a Wonderful Life and Alastair Sim's Scrooge.

Bing plays Father O'Malley and Bergman heads the Catholic girls school with their challenges cut out for them. He must take in a problem girl whose father abandoned her and she must help a deliquent boy learn to box so he can win some school yard fights. A greedy businessman who wants to tear down the school to build a new parking lot is converted by their winning ways to donate his new building for their school. Always worth seeing again is the touching moment where Bergman learns she being transferred away from the school. "The Bells of St. Mary's" sung by Crosby is worthwhile to watch again any time of year.

Sixy Three years ago, I saw this movie for the first time and have enjoyed watching it through the years. The song from the movie THE BELLS OF SAINT MARYS has alway been one of my favorite songs.

When my husband and I was married in 1961, THE BELLS OF SAINT MARYS was played at our Wedding.

During this Christmas season, families need to watch this movie and renew

The First Christmas Snow is a cute and touching Christmas special from Rankin and Bass and features Angela Lansbury as the voice of a nun who helps take care of a little blind shepherd boy and though this is shown every year on The Fox Family Channel (It was show about two or three times so far this December of 2005) I wish it would be transferred to DVD!

This is a very good Christmas movie for your collection. ABC Family rarely shows it anymore, so if you can get a copy, consider yourself fortunate. The story is a good one for the family. It is typical Rankin-Bass work - classic!

This version of the movie is wonderful. It truly shows the masterpiece of a movie that Cecile B Demile created. It was a tough choice between the two great actors to decide who has done a finer performance and I had to settle on Yul Brynner as my personal best. Of course Charlton is wonderful, however Yul does his Rameses bit with such conviction, that history comes alive in my eyes. This is a must have to any decent DVD collection!

Do not waste your time, stay with your VHS until the studios can offer a better print. A film like this should really be of Blue Ray quality.

Truly spectacular, a fine reverently sensitive portrayal of the birth of Jesus. I heard this 1978 movie was good but it exceeded my expectations and takes its place favorably among others that treat the same topic. In fact, it may well be the best one, I haven't seen an earlier "Nativity" movie so I can not compare the two.

5stars - "The Nativity of Christ is treated with great reverence" (Tom Plum)

This is not the cartoon version that all the other reviews are indicating. This is a live video produced around 1978. The acting is superb. The movie does a very sensitive portrayal of Mary and Joseph leading up to the birth of Jesus. It is in my opinion the most spiritual of all Hollywood productions about the birth of Christ. I have looked for and waited several years for this to become available. For years I have checked all the TV listings at Christmas time to watch this show. I am so thrilled to have this in my video library.

this first in the Veggie series was produced on an absolute shoe-string...copies were being made on an as-needed basis as orders came in, and the animation shows that. but! you can't go wrong with three great songs (God is bigger than the boogie-man, the water buffalo song, and oh no!) that stick in your head. you will find yourself singing them just as often as you catch your kids singing them.
the "monsters" jumping out of junior's drawers and the visit by frankencelery allow for a look at night-time fears in a way that children can understand and enjoy without becoming too frightened. telling kids their fears are taken care of by God because He's big and will protect them and the way that bob explains what those scary things really are should help youngsters to learn to overcome those bedtime nasties. singing the God is bigger song with them as part of a routine at night can help to reinforce this message.
i don't have any kids and my nephew got me hooked on veggietales when he showed me jonah (still my favourite movie, but i think my favourite "short" story is either king george and the ducky or little joe.) my nephew was 18 at the time, so don't write these off as simply cute children's videos. you may very well find them to be a great addition to your own video library (i own almost all of them.) these are stories with a God-centered message that is not terribly blatant, offer a Biblical truth, and entertain all at the same time.
as a maiden effort, this video gets 5-stars from me. i wish it would have been around when i was a child and afraid of the dark. i know i couldn't have produced anything this entertaining on my pc and with only two or three other people's assistance.
oh, btw larry--i'm still waiting for my water buffalo!

I think for a Christian movie, it gives a good idea about the stories in the Bible. Although, some of your movies are becaming disturbing and it has caracters or scenes that should not be in a Christian kids movie.

are wonderful. I wish I had this video as a kid because it would have saved me from having to check under my bed to look for the boogie monster. The guys at Big Idea are my heroes because they address issues that are really important to kids. This is their first video ever and it still looks great. I would highly recommend it for anyone's children.

There are tales that have been told and this is a tale that will stay with you long after you have seen it! It is an epic spectacle in film making. This particular DVD set gives you the full background of this film including the feature version and it also includes the silent version of 1925 that is glorious. This version of 1959 is the second greatest film ever made coming a close second to 'The Ten Commandments.' William Wyler has wrenched his full emotions while making this film and the magic has been brought out alive on the screen also principally through the majestic score of Miklos Rozsa. In fact, this score even eclipses the super effort of Elmer Bernstein for the Ten Commandments. The theme of Christ and the individual themes of Judah Ben Hur, Messala and the suffering leprosiac mother/sister are excellent examples of background scoring. Charlton Heston scores in a big way once again in the principal role of Judah Ben Hur. Stephen Boyd as Messala is stunning and is as forceful as Heston. They are ably supported by Jack Hawkins as Quintus Arrius. This is a Tale of the Christ with Christ shown only in the background. This is done in a masterful way. The crucifixion, the storm succeeding it, the Sermon on the Mount, Christ helping Judah with water and the reverse during the climb to Golgotha are very subtly captured with mesmerising music by Rozsa. If you feel films are a document of a director's expression, then this is one jewel to be treasured. Lew Wallace's novel has been given a crown with this screenplay. This is Wyler's best effort. This DVD set is a Collectors' item that I will cherish eternally.

The story of a prominent and wealthy Jewish family, whose feud with a Roman friend nearly destroys them. An extremely emotional story against the backdrop of the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ is one of the greatest epics ever filmed. The chariot race is one of the most impressive and longest action pieces I've ever seen! That sequence alone takes the film out of the realm of greatness into an outstanding piece of visual cinema!

This is the best American movie ever made. Everything is done superbly. Great story, outstanding acting, fantastic picture made with 65mm cameras, masterful music score. It is hard to find anything bad about this movie.

Aspect ratio of this movie is incredible 2.76:1. On standard 4:3 TV black bars will occupy more space than the movie itself. This method creates spectacular panoramic shots which is important for epic movies with great action scenes.

Chariot race is one of the best action sequences ever shot in a movie. With no digital computer effects it is a true masterpiece. Pod racing looks great in Star Wars Episode 1 but it is entirely done digitally, something not available in 1959.

In 36 page booklet about the production (included with 2005 edition) it is mentioned that Judah's horses in the movie are actually world famous Lipizzaners. As gray horses they are born black or bay but during their lifetime they become lighter every year and finally become white. They originate from farms around village Lipizza in Slovenia and they are used in the world oldest and most famous Spanish Ridding School (formed in 1572) in Vienna, Austria. Only stallions are used for dressage. Unlike racing horses, these live very long, reaching 30 eventually. In 2005, when new 4-disc set of Ben-Hur was reissued, it was exactly 60 years from the time when general Patton rescued these horses from extinction. During WWII, Nazis captured entire breeding stock and shipped it back to Germany. Rescue had to be made behind Soviet lines to prevent them from ending in Soviet hands as horsemeat.

Chariot race places Judah against his old buddy Messala who sent him to slavery and imprisoned his mother and sister. Judah uses this race to destroy Messala's ego and end his streak of invincibility in the Forum. Messala rides Greek chariot with black horses, equipped with metal spikes to crush other competitors because there are no rules that ban such thing. Everything is allowed. After his chariot crashes, he refuses to be operated, he waits for Judah to come to him. The only reason why he is waiting for Judah is not to show remorse or regret for his past actions against Judah and his family but to commit his final act of evil, his last words tell Judah that he can seek his mother and sister in "Valley of the Lepers", if he can recognize them. We can only wish that George Lucas made Dart Vader more like Messala. His body completely broken, bathed in his own blood and waiting to die he uses little life left in him to make Judah suffer even more. Stephen Boyd portrayal of Messala is one of the best evil guy acts ever made.

Movie is the winner of eleven Academy Awards. Charlton Heston gave his best performance ever and won Oscar. It is shame that Stephen Boyd didn't win it, he got only Golden Globe Award for best Supporting Actor.

I've seen the video (and Transformations II which I wish Amazon also carried and highly recommend it to anyone even if you only come out with a renewed committment to individual prayer -- something that is the 1st and foremost key (with reading the Word) to success in the ongoing Christian life. It is also invaluable as inspiration for corporate prayer. Have you ever seen a church in rivival (consistent miracles, spontaneous conviction of sin and willing obedience to the steps to salvation, gifts of the spirit operating within Corinthian guidelines)without a sustained inercessory prayer group? Neither have I. Yet the naysayers (who probably are in dead (no spirit) churches or no church at all)pick apart that which is NOT Otis' calling -salvation. His calling is corporate prayer by believers. Otis presupposes (and teaches) that prayer warriors who would get involved in this kind of prayer (or any intercessory prayer) are already saved and filled with the Spirit. Otherwise the person would find themselves like the example in Acts: beat up stripped and naked by demons. "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
This and all the Transformations videos are a wonderful inspiration to individuals, churches and whole cities to join voices and call out to God for more of Him (revival).

There have been several websites that have questioned the facts in this video. If you buy or view this video I recommend you do the same. About a year ago I personally e-mailed Mareth Warren at the Sentinal Group who forwarded it to another (can't remember his name)requesting a refutation. The staff member responded that they were planning to post a refutation to their critics claims on the Sentinal web site; I'm still waiting. Additionally George Otis has never personally disavowed his unbiblical Moral Government Theology as outlined in his book "The God They Never Knew"

Do you want to be inspired? Watch this video. We often use the term 'revival' too lightly, referring to a particularly inspiring meeting. In this video, revival describes an entire society being reformed. Depending on the city, this has different 'symptoms'. For example: bars being closed, due to lack of business; jails being closed, due to lack of crime; increased harvests; reduction in drug trade; all-night prayer vigils held in the sports arena, with tens of thousands of participants, etc.There are four segments, each about 15 minutes long, each featuring a different city around the world that is currently undergoing revival. I was most impacted by the commonalities between these stories. In each case, the story started with sin and darkness. In each case, there were praying believers. In each case, churches united in partnership. The lessons seem obvious.

This film has become a myth in some way and it was fun to see it, especially so close to Christmas. But it has aged tremendously. To center the film on the Jesus who started, without even knowing it, a revolution that leads him to die is passé, and false because the Roman legions were by far strong enough to start that revolution. To center the film on Judas the traitor who delivers Jesus and then hang himself is also very untrendy and absurd now we have the Gospel of this poor systematically scapegoatish Judas. There is a lot of good singing and interesting music for sure but the general idea seems to me slightly outlandish. The emphasis is definitely by far too much on the Jews, the priests, high priest and other officials from the temple but also the crowd, simple people who really are too heavy on the "crucify him" bit. Today that sounds and looks definitely out of tone and the use of the good old Jewish purple to really emphasize this Jewish responsibility in the crucifixion is just coming from another age that Johan Sebastian Bach had been quite cautious not to follow even in his Saint John's Passion. Too bad because it has always been a good idea for me to put music, no matter which type, on these poetical myths of ours because they were invented and imagined in a language that was necessarily enriched with prosody and music from beginning to end. But the music must not be the tree that hides the forest and the forest is the revulsive contractions this century was going through in those days. A first globalization that was to reduce that Middle East to nothing at all for a few centuries just for the pleasure of Roman legions and the profit of Rome. A temple, a city and a people were not to be taken into account in such a prospect. But the film does not show that at all. Too bad. The film is in a way already stepping down from the stage.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has wonderful music and the movie made from it is pretty close to perfect. Shot creatively on location in the Middle East and filled with expertly rendered visual symbolism this musical has a unique take on the last days of probably the most influential person to ever live. No matter what one's spiritual beliefs JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR can give the open minded viewer new insights into a life that changed the world.

Jesus Christ Superstar is perhaps the boldest of all musicals made during the last seventy years, even though the story it tells is one that has been told, retold, and read for centuries. The way this show presents its subject material, and context has gotten it banned in a heavily Christian nation in Africa, and scolded by many Christian churches, but this musical has proven appealing to both people of faith, and those without. This musical was ahead of its time, starting an era of adaptation for Christianity, which wasn't moving into the new world very well, considering science was beginning to take a stronger grip over cultural knowledge and concepts. I consider this one of the first big steps into making Christianity more believable, and up to the standards of modern society.

Like any great musical the opening is an overture giving us samples of all the music to come. During the overture we see the cast arrive via bus, after being presented with a long landscape shot that shows us the remains of the Roman civilization. Without a single word being exchanged we are presented with our cast, led by skilled singers Ted Neeley, and Carl Anderson. These first shots in the overture are important; in it the actors already give you an idea of how it is that they're portraying their respective roles.

The actual musical starts with the song Heaven on Their Minds which is sung by the disciple Judas Iscariot, who of course would later betray Jesus. There initially was controversy over Anderson, a black man, being cast in this role, because many regarded Judas as the greatest villain in history, and that this was a racist move by the producers. In this first song all thoughts of racism quickly evaporate, as Anderson's powerful singing ability blows the audience away.
You quickly learn that Judas is not the villain of this story; in fact he's portrayed as a good, very confused man; someone who doesn't quite know how to cope with his feelings in regards to Jesus. This humanization outraged many in the Christian church, several objecting that Judas was a villain and should've been portrayed as the sniveling, plotting individual in the corner who'd sell you out for pieces of silver. This is one of the main reasons Jesus Christ Superstar is a giant step forward in today's Christian society, because it recognizes that people have weaknesses, and that anyone can act rashly out of confusion, or haste.

The first song performed by Anderson is one of love, and respect for Jesus, but also one of great confusion, because he's shown as not knowing what it is that Jesus wishes to accomplish; he thinks Jesus is becoming self-centered, caring more for him rather than the poor and needy. This entire song is performed by Anderson on the mountains overlooking Christ and his followers, creating one of the best landscape shots in the entire movie, but it also catches the purpose of this song. Judas is far from Jesus and pleading for him to listen to his warnings, but of course he can't be heard from that distance. Perhaps he's too frightened to actually express himself, and confront Christ, or maybe he really is ignored by Jesus. By the end of this song you can easily feel sorry for Anderson's character. After his suicide nothing could've have been more controversial than Judas coming back as an angel.

The same thing that outraged the church about this shows Judas was same for Jesus, who's portrayed more as a vehicle for spreading the word of God more so than a divine being. This Jesus shows human weakness, passion, and even rage, which made him more human than most other incarnations. Jesus would rather not die, and is even tired of his task of spreading the word, losing his inspiration over the last three years, which is why Judas in this story feels that he's slipping in the first place. Jesus, is as he put it in one song, "sad and tired."

Ted Neeley sings the part right, and his eyes provide the best aspect of his portrayal of Christ. In his eyes there lies a great deal of complexity that shows someone who's incredibly troubled from a mental stand-point. He's been slowly beat down over the past three years and his exhaustion isn't present in his mannerisms, or actions, but it's all there in those eyes. He speaks like someone who's obviously a step above your average civilian, and he sounds like a happy person who's simply doing what he feels must be done but those eyes of his...These eyes show someone well over thirty; someone who's tired and teetering on the edge of self-destruction.

Another noteworthy performance is Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate, who is portrayed very sympathetically. He is shown as someone who really doesn't want to kill Jesus, because he really has no incentive for committing such an act, but he has peers and the population pressuring him into it from all angles. The performance given by Dennen, though not as grand as Anderson or Neeley, is worth noting in this film, for he performs the songs with full emotion, while acting each scene to its fullest, but never quite going overboard.

With music by the infamous Andrew Lloyd Webber (The Phantom of the Opera) and lyrics by Tim Rice (based on the book by Rice) this musical was helmed by Director Norman Jewison. Having just finished the future classic, Fiddler on the Roof, Jewison was ready to tackle this obscure rock opera, and was willing to push it to the max. So what did Jewison do to try and provide something new, new, and extraordinary? He packed up the entire cast and took them overseas to shoot the entire film on location; as accurately as possible. The entire movie is shot on the ruins of the Roman Empire, where this story is thought to have unfolded two thousand years ago. It is hard to believe these ruins once housed one of the largest empires in human history.

The desert in this film does not look dry, and forbidding, it actually appears very surreal and not at all some place you wouldn't want to be. You may wonder why I point this out, but if you pay attention to some other movies you'll see that lots of them do not shot deserts in a really fashionable style, often making them look dry, and depressing, or just plain boring; which deserts probably are in real life. Jewison takes the desert and utilizes effective camera angles to capture the beauty of this landscape, and they way he transitions from music number to music number are very effective. No transition here seemed to have been forced onto the viewer, and all of it seems to fit together like some sort of film puzzle, but for the most part it works well.

Jewison's style reminds me of Stanley Kubrick, to a certain degree (mind you no one can compare to Kubrick). It's a very dry filmmaking, not really showing much bias towards any of the characters, for they all get treated with mostly the same camera angles. You get to judge these characters entirely by their actions, and not by the way they are filmed, and that's how any story should be presented, and that is not letting any character get away without having to prove themselves to the audience; even if they are Jesus. In this film you don't have any dramatic shots of Jesus, or Judas that distinguish themselves over the other characters. Jewison's style is beautiful, but he doesn't let the filming control the musical, letting the actors, and the music tell the story more than his film.

This movie isn't at all Christian propaganda (the churches that have scorned the musical can prove that) and is something that everyone should try to be exposed to at some point or another. If you don't believe in the Christian faith you shouldn't avoid this musical, because none of it is propaganda, in fact it's one of the most believable adaptations of Jesus I've ever seen. Come to this musical with an open mind, and remember that it's just a story; forget its inspiration came from a religious text, because as a musical it really isn't something to miss. If you are of faith this musical can bring up some questions for you about it, but you shouldn't dwell on them. If you think what the Bible says is what happened one-hundred percent, no questions asked, I can tell you now that odds are you will not like Jesus Christ Superstar.

Now sit back and let yourself get swept away by one of the most groundbreaking musicals of all time.

5stars - "Rock Opera Provides Believable Portrayal of Judas and Christ" (Reef Shark)

I always loved this movie. The first time I saw it I was around 16 years-old, living in Brazil and took my mother to see it. I was impressed with the way the story was told. I loved Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson immediately. Then I came to New York and bought the LP of the film and listened all the time. Then moved to U.S.A. and here, in Denver, they announced the play and I went - and I finally saw Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson on the stage - I'll never forget! I bought the VHS and I was in heaven. Then I bought the DVD and was more than happy. And, finally, I bought this Special Edition and already lost the count how many times I saw it. The feature commentary with director Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley is unbelievable and they call the attention of the viewer for details, explain the scenes and the way they were done -it's incredible! I'm now completely happy because now I know so much about the making of the film, the actors, the director and I can continue to see my movie with much more pleasure.

Truly inspiring, the film's merits are mostly propelled by an early and acclaimed performance by Gregory Peck who plays a hapless Scottish priest going to China as a missionary. Facing scorn, revolution, and poverty, Fr. Francis Chisholm leads his new flock by gentle wisdom and perseverence. Overlong even with some heartwarming and important episodic developments, the film remains a substantative viewing experience. (Includes Vincent Price and a young Roddy McDowell as the boy Francis Chisholm. Also a winner of several Oscars and nominations.)

4stars - "'Keys' to Inspiration" (Rocky Raccoon)

Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't buy any other product. I, for one, would like to see a little more tension in the story, a little more ambiguity, a priest who isn't quite so sure of himself, a congregation that maintains a healthy skepticism about its shepherd, even as it hungers for the real article so rarely encountered, and too often punished and destroyed when discovered. I remember one such film: Humphrey Bogart playing a bogus priest on the lam in China, forced to enact the real thing in spite of himself. "The Left Hand of God" peaked my curiosity and left an impression. But that was so many years ago, memory may be deceiving me. I just wish it was available on DVD for me to see again. It may be no better than the rest, but it's nice to think about the possibility.

Meanwhile, if you like wholesome and uplifting and the story of a good man who manages not only to stay good but helps a whole bunch of people who obviously need helping, "The Keys of the Kingdom" is a safe bet. You'll like it. I did. But I still wish.....

An excellent movie for a Catholic family. Gregory Peck's "unorthodox beliefs" are petty issues, not having to do with Church dogma, etc... and it's basically pitting a humble, Saintly man against Church leaders who are only interested in "numbers" of converts and their own rise to power. So I think a more accurate description would be that THEY were unorthodox, not this lovely, humble priest.

It's the story of a priest who has a really hard time with the people he has come to convert and help: How hard it is to be accepted by them, and the way that God works through him and them to change the hearts of the people, the people who become so dear to this wonderful priest in the end. A really uplifting, wonderful story that I highly recommend.

Some notes for parents: there are obvious cultural issues in China that are dealt with, nothing major, but there is a difference in religions. Some classic war scenes, nothing obnoxious or obvious but they are there, and during one the priest actually joins in to defend. There are lower Church officials shown in a negative way, although there are plenty shown positively too, so I would say that's a fair depiction. There is a mention of the story of a young lady who makes the wrong choices in life and has a child out of it, who then passes away. Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head. All of these are minor things and I suggest that you watch the movie with the entire family. Like many classic films, even when dealing with some harsh issues they don't elaborate on them; and the little ones don't quite catch them.
