The stories are timeless and still relevant, even though one takes place in 1954, one in 1974, and the last in 2000. It is a similar format to "If These Walls Could Talk 2" in which there are three stories from three different generations. The 1954 sequence hits home, in spite of a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy within the armed services, because even now, a military career can still be irreparably damaged if a soldier or officer is outed. Gay youths can relate to the 1974 story, seeing minimal progress from 1974 to the present with the way GLBT young people are treated by their peers. All one has to do is watch "The Matthew Shepard Story" or "Boys Don't Cry" to witness recent cruelty against GLBT youth.

The three stories could have easily been made into full-length movies. I especially wanted to learn more about the characters from "A Friend of Dorothy's." That story has a lot of potential, and Brittany Murphy was quite effective in her sad, wide-eyed portrayal of Dorothy Nelson. The phrase, "A friend of Dorothy's" was a bit overused in the script; I'm sure gays and lesbians back in 1954 had other code words to communicate their homosexuality other than just proclaiming "I'm a friend of Dorothy's." At times the gay cliches became a bit much, which diluted the realism and authenticity of the stories.

What I liked about the film was its positive ending and overall of message of hope and acceptance, in spite of what happened to some of the main characters in the three stories. It is a visually beautiful film and captures the small town feeling. And the stories are compelling enough to make this an interesting film to purchase and watch. I hope it comes out on DVD with Director's and Screenwriters' commentary.

This could very well be among the greatest movies I've ever seen. It gets kind of corny at times, but corniness is good when dealing with these themes. If you liked Angela's Ashes, you'll LOVE Common Ground. It made me cry, not because I could indetify (I'm straight), but my brother is gay and it really helped me see some things differently. Watch it, you won't regret it.

5stars - "Loved it, loved it, loved it."

Unforunately, this video is still very relavent today. Contrary to Mr. Diamond's comments - LGBTQ youth are still beaten and murdered today and are four times more likely than their straight peers to commit suicide (Mass. Youth Behavior 2000). I was harassed severely in high school and had to transfer due to physical threats. To say that youth today do not know what it was like is just plain wrong. As an active member of several queer youth organizations trust me, we know and we are grateful. But we have our own issues that maybe you are ignoring Mr. Diamond.This movie is moving, and hey, JTT IS HOT!Mark Snyder20 yrs old.

At first I didn't know quiet what to make of this movie. Jeremy Irons sure does have the talent to play "STRANGE" beyond words. I don't own the VHS, I have a movie on a CD, but still this is quiet an interesting movie. To love someone for 18 years and NOT know they are man, only proves, "Love is blind". After I watched this a couple of times, I grew to appreciate the talent that REALLY went into this movie. ONLY Jeremy Irons and John Lone could have pulled this off. If you are affended by same sex love, don't watch this!!! I cried at the end... I simply LOVE this movie. I have watched it so many times, and each time, I find something I didn't see before. GREAT directing, GREAT actors and just plain a GREAT movie. It's NOT a porn movie!! It's LOVE at it's deepest. When I first saw John Lone singing [don't know if he did his own singing] I was as amazed as Jeremy Irons. It was beautiful. I really thought she was a "she". To pull off, having a baby was simply super. It ends so sad, I won't say how, due to some who haven't seen this, but I REALLY did cry. I am not the "weapy cry baby" at movies, but this one got to me. I highly recommend this movie. 5 stars aren't enough!

If you're looking for a Book turned into a movie--this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian "woman" (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and also and was definetly an attention keeper.

M Butterfly tells the story of a French American Diplomat, Rene Gallimard, who falls in love with Chinese opera singer, Song Liling. Unbeknownst to Gallimard, Song Liling is a Chinese informant gathering information of American troop movement in Vietnam. Song Liling has an even deeper secret she is hiding from Gallimard, her true identity as a man. Despite Lilings love for Gallimard, he testifies against him and Gallimard ends up in jail. While heartbroken and still in love with a lie, Gallimard commits suicide. From start to finish, this movie is full of surprises. Although there are subtle hints regarding Liling's true identity I was never really prepared for its revelation. M Butterfly is a tragic story of one man who loses everything because his love of a lie. Although a bit disturbing, M Butterfly is a movie worth watching.

The movie M.Butterfly directed by David Cronenburg is based on a true life story about the French diplomat Rene Gallimard( Jeremy Irons)who falls in love with a Chinese opera singer named Song LiLing in Beijing in the 1960's. Gallimard is very fascinated with the opera singer and they soon begin a long passionate love affair. Gallimard plays this experienced man of the world yet so clumsy and love struck, as he manage to miss a very big detail about his lover. The character in the movie,Gallimard is very apprehensive and an idealist, but the actor Jeremy Irons plays the role outstandingly good. Gallimard will soon realize Song LiLing is not as shy and innocent as she might seem. Song LiLing is blackmailed by the Chinese government to obtain political information from Gallimard, thats when he gets drawn into trouble with his lover. Only in the very end of the movie Gallimard discovers his lover's best kept secrets.Its many moments in the movie when Chinese atmosphere comes alive and the cinematography is good. This movie seems like a normal love story until it takes a drastic turn and make you start thinking of the whole movie more into detail. There is a lot to digest in this scandalous love story that turns into a horror story. The screen play in this movie is from David Henry Hwang's opera play that he deconstructed from John Luther Longs version of Madame Butterfly. This movie is well worth seen, it keeps your brain working, no doubt.

3stars - "Imperalists Fantasy" (Helen Schnitzenbaumer)

SPOILER ALERT**

Cronenberg's movie M. Butterfly is full of unexpected twists and turns. The French-American diplomat Rene Gallimard has fallen for a Chinese Opera singer. They embark n a lusty affair that ends in an unprecedented event. Song Liling, the Opera singer, is betraying Rene in more ways then one. She is using him to gain information on American troops in Vietnam. He has no idea that she is using him and he has no idea that she is actually a HE. When Rene ends up in prison, he uses a Madame Butterfly backdrop to commit suicide. This movie was well acted and directed. There were many subtle hints to Liling's masculinity, but there was nothing too bold as to give away the climax. This movie is a surprising take on Madama Butterfly that will linger in mind as a very different and intrguing drama.

I cannot believe that so many people reviewed this film and did not mention the amazing work of Sarah Lassez who played Polly/Egg. I have to admit that I did not like the movie and fastforwarded past many parts (I also have to mention that I am well out of the teenage years which could help explain why I did not care for the movie), but I thought the character of Polly was so well done. She demonstrated such innocence and naivety I was heartbroken to see what happened to her. I felt that she was the only true to life character and showing that she was from a home with a very loving father just made me feel more sympathy for her situation.

5stars - "My Favorite Move of All Time!!!" (kim Jones)

arraki's teen apocalypse triology ends in the wonderfully lovely "nowhere".
of course, arraki's films always attract the WRONG audience so itll be hard for you to know which review to trust.
here's how to tell:
1. if the reviewer says an arraki film has "bad acting" - they dont get it.
2. if the reviewer's only positive remark involves their mastabatory fantasies - they dont get it.
3. if the reviewer uses the words "shock value".. well then they prolly used the term "waistoid" too...
4. if the reviewer thinks an arraki movie is supposed to LITERALLY depict REAL teenagers then they prolly are one and havent found "freaks and geeks" yet.

i dunno. seems to ME like the themes of unrequented love, surpressed homosexual desires and an empty feeling about being in the center of our world's commercialized nothingness are interesting, relatable and beautiful things.

5stars - "dogs eating people IS cool" (John A. Fair)

Shocking portrayal of teen angst and lust done by some of America's most famous teen icons. PUNK ROCK! If you're into sex, drugs, music, or just cult movies of that sort, view this independent gem. This film has so many cameo's it'll make your head spin. John Ritter as the televangalist is CLASSIC. The humor is well-worn, but it's wittingly done. Psychosomatic sexuality and imagery prevail here. Where? Nowhere. But alot closer than you'd like to admit YOU FREAK. So go pick this up and stop floggin your puppy in the shower!

It looked good on paper: Powerhouse performer Bette Midler playing the most famous role in musical theater, directed by Emile Ardolino, the guy who turned "Dirty Dancing" into a national phenomenon. So what went wrong? The truth is, Midler simply isn't a good enough actress to capture the subtleties of as complex a character as Momma Rose. She's all big eyes and broad gestures, waving arms and manic mood swings; it's a community theater performance, going for the obvious at every turn. Is Rose manic and driven at times? Yes, of course; her father calls her a "crazy woman" in an early scene. But from her first entrance, Midler seems to have confused "powerhouse" with "bulldozer." She spits her lines out in rapid succession, with all the bawdiness with which she tells her famous Sophie Tucker jokes in concert. But where's charm, humor, sexiness; all the manipulatively feminine characteristics that make Rose such a seductive, seditious presence in everyone's lives? Rose gets her way not because she beats Herbie, June and Louise into submission, but because her dreams and desires are so strong they have no choice but to believe in them themselves. Auntie Mame is described as The Pied Piper, but it's an apt description of Rose as well. Midler's characterization is so grating, I can't imagine anyone doing much more than running in the opposite direction.

Unfortunately, with the exception of Jennifer Rae Beck's Dainty June and Linda Hart's Mazeppa, the supporting cast is average at best. And however skilled Ardolino is at directing the musical sequences, he completely fails to mine the humor and tension of Arthur Laurents's brilliant dialogue. The production values are first rate across the boards. Personally, I think June's acts are a little over produced; a certain vaudeville seediness would have made more sense. But the producers and Ardolino obviously adore the material -- who doesn't? -- and they've approached it with tremendous love and attention, so it's hard to fault their decisions.

Is this a better version than the 1962 film? Yes and no. It's a far more faithful adaptation, with Laurents and Sondheim's bawdier material intact, but I think the earlier cast is far superior. I know I'm not supposed to like Rosiland Russell because she wasn't Ethel Merman, but I love the performance; for me, Russell finds the perfect balance between Rose's fierce passion and her crushing vulnerability. And Karl Malden and Natalie Wood are superb, the latter fragile and extremely touching. So as a record of the show as originally written, this version is a must for all musical theatre fans. But if you're looking for the definitive "Gypsy" on film -- it ain't been made yet.

3stars - "Everything's Coming Up Crabgrass" (David Cady)

About the best you can say for Bette Midler's performance is that she does her own singing. And even some of that is sloppy and careless. Her acting is one-note, and she kills her best comedy lines by alternately gasping or screeching them. (Say what you will about Roz Russell, she at least knew how to deliver lines.) We know that Madame Rose's kiddie troupe is getting a bit long in the tooth, but Jennifer Beck as "Dainty" June looks fully thirty years old. Cynthia Gibb is a lovely Louise/Gypsy, but Natalie Wood "aged" more credibly in the admittedly flawed by classier 1962 theatrical film adaptation. Peter Riegert is too mousy as Herbie, so much of the point of a strong man continually knuckling under to Rose's steamroller whim is lost. (When he does stand up to Rose, he seems more petulant than assertive.) Stars are wasted in bit parts, and Andrea Martin unwisely and unsuccessfully tries to be funny as Mrs. Cratchitt (who was played hilariously "straight" in the 1962 film by Jean Willes.)

The production itself looks cheesy and low budget, and the bright crayon colors don't help. Even the lamb was cuter in the earlier movie!

Still, it's an earnest attempt. And with great material like that, it's hard to go far wrong. As many others have pointed out, the adaptation is faithful to the original. But oh, why didn't somebody think to do a second film of GYPSY in the 70s while Merman was still around to do it?

3stars - "Campy, artificial, no improvement on the 1962 film, but still GYPSY" (Hans Christian Brando)

I LOVE the musical GYPSY. I knew that the creators of the original Broadway musical, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents were extremely disappointed with the earlier 1962 film version with Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood. Fair enough. So this TV adaptation is scene for scene, word for word exactly like the stage play script. That is excellent. The score is also one of the most outstanding in all of Broadway history. So, we get the original script and score; but unfortunately, that's all we get.
I watched this TV movie with great anticipation. My enthusiam deflated as soon as the less than divine Miss M started singing "Some People." I realized, with horror, that she was not portraying Mama Rose. Instead, she was portraying her idea of Ethel Merman portraying Mama Rose!! To make matters worse, her voice sounds extremely hoarse and coarse. Midler never makes the role her own. Surely, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and even Rosalind
Russell did their own individual interpretations of Mama Rose. If Midler had only thought for a moment about Mama Rose, as the other actresses did, instead of Ethel Merman, she might have had a major triumph. I give Midler credit for giving her all to "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn", but the overalll production goes straight downhill because Midler simply doesn't "got the stuff." Curiously, Midler did this TV version just after Tyne Daly won a Tony Award for her performance in a Broadway revival. So, any TV version around that time period should have gone by rights to Daly. I wonder if somebody in Midler's camp pulled strings to make this a Midler Vanity production? I know Russell stole the original film from Merman because her husband was a powerful agent. Even I did not mind Russell over Merman. But Midler seriously misses the mark!
I know a thing or two about Mama Rose. I saw Judy Kaye play the role in a brief run in Seattle in 2001. Kaye just blew the roof off the theatre. Patti Lupone is doing a limited three week run in NYC as I write this. Now, that's a Mama I'd love to see. If you want a real powerhouse Mama Rose, skip Midler and go with the CD recordings made by Angela Lansbury (1973 London Cast) or Tyne Daly (1989 Broadway revival) instead.

3stars - "FAITHFUL TO ORIGINAL, BUT MIDLER MISSES THE MARK" (DEWEY MEE)

I was recently in a production of "Gypsy" and have grown pretty attached to it. I thought this rendition was done quite well, but I prefer the Baby June from the original film and I prefer the strippers from the original film as well. I like Bette's performance the best out of the other Mama Rose actresses from film and/or Broadway.

My only complaint was a small glitch in the DVD that causes it to skip. Maybe a spin on the Disc Doctor will cure it.

Who cares about the boring lesbo stuff...the skinny, rat-faced Heche is nothing to look at, the other one is, but so what? The reason to watch this flick, of course, is Walken...who parades around in Hawaiian shirts, silk dressing gowns with black socks, Coke bottle glasses, a fright mask wig, and Cuban cigar - sometimes all at once. The plot is presposterous, the best scene - and truly a great laugh - is in the hotel room: gun-wielding, condomed Walken in aforementioned get-up, bending undercover cop chauffeur over sofa, screaming prostitute Heche, walked in on by Chen who looks at Walken and says "whore" His line: "It's not what it looks like.....I can't believe I'm paying for this"

2stars - "So Bad It's Almost Good" (Pass the popcorn)

An enigmatic, unjustly forgotten masterpiece.

Donald Cammell's beautiful and poetic WILD SIDE concludes the path that he began with Nicolas Roeg in 1969. I am referring, of course, to their directorial debut, the magisterial PERFORMANCE. As in PERFORMANCE, the principal characters mirror one another at crucial points---the rogue undercover cop (Steve Bauer), the vampirelike money launderer (Christopher Walken), his bewitching wife (Joan Chen), the banker/prostitute (Anne Heche) all perform a round-dance in which each partner takes on the other's identity, is attracted to the other because s/he sees in him/her a reflection of his/her own self. The fascination with homoeroticism, as in PERFORMANCE, could be taken on its own terms; more profoundly, it touches upon the film's Cammell's tireless obsession with finding similitude in difference.

Homosexuality is the love of the same. Homosexuality is a metaphor in the film for difference-in-similarity, similarity-in-difference.

As in PERFORMANCE, the dialogue in this film is highly lyrical and stylized.

Every scene in this film is essential. Shame on the MPAA for forcing Cammell to censor his film (the film is now attributed to his psuedonym, "Frederick Brauner"). To all those who read these words: Search for the absolutely uncensored version of this film---which, as far as I know, has never been released anywhere. Even the so-called "director's cut" is a truncated version.

Without a knowledge of PERFORMANCE, the significance of THE WILD SIDE will be lost on the viewer.

Someday, Donald Cammell will be celebrated as one of the greatest directors in film history. His films are PERFORMANCE, DEMON SEED, THE WHITE OF THE EYE, and THE WILD SIDE.

This strange mix of money, lesbian sex, and a plot that (at times) was a little hard to follow, did feature a fairly decent looking Anne Heche (Ellen Degeneres' former girlfriend, and I could see why) and Joan Chen, who have a few fairly steamy scenes together (too bad Ms. Chen didn't show more). The always strange Christopher Walken and Steven Bauer flesh out (pardon the usage) story, such as it is. I give it four stars for Heche, who can't really act, but did look good; I might have given it five, if Chen had shown more, other than that, ok, but not great. [Supposed to be the unrated edition, but I'm not so sure].

2stars - "Wild Side"

The provocative Anne Heche made a reputation in Hollywood due to her affairs with high profile comedians on her climb to the top. Few know that Heche was briefly Steve Martin's girlfiend before she was Ellen's, and despite her evident ability and attractiveness, a certain pall fell over her persona, as a real life heartbreaker (even before Ellen). She has hence been cast generally as a heavy, if not fem-lesbian, and even a twisted type. All of which makes her heady performance in Wild Side the more exciting. As the reviews tell you, the film is uneven. Yet, it has moments of brilliance from all the players. Walken is wickedly funny in his absurd role, Bauer is often convincing, and Chen is her usual, magnificent self. But Heche carries the film. The brief post-rape phone call scene on the kitchen counter is a high art, convincingand sensitive, and she has rarely looked better than in the brocade (did I get the spelling?) kimono she wears in the following scenes.But, it is the romance with Chen that is worth the price of the disc (although any cuts other than the director's should be universally outlawed on DVD, at least). Let's face it, these women are gorgeous, and even better together, au natural. As close as mainstream Hollywood has gotten (or may ever get) to XXX sex. Deneuve is in a subdued role in this film. She's also in a supporting role so the film cover is a bit misleading. The story is not as strong as others that she's chosen.Daniel Auteuil is great as the cop who is entangled in the life of a trouble-making young woman. Extremely sexy in this role, he plays the role of a strong yet conflicted law enforcer well.The film is a bit weak in its flow. It's not the worst film but it's also not extremely good either.

Daniel Auteuil never ceases to amaze. This versatile actor ("Jean de Florette," "Un Coeur en Hiver") is never the same character more than once, it seems, which is what acting is about, I suppose. In "Thieves" he is a tough cop who is estranged from his family, a group of dedicated organized criminals. He is the black sheep. His brother is killed in an attempted heist, and this incident is the core of the story. He has fallen in love with Juliette (Laurence Côté), whose brother is a member of the family gang, and his life is torn apart. Catherine Deneuve actually has a small part in the story, but carries it off with her usual panache. An excellent cop story, French style.

Essentially this is a movie about one of many models chewed up and spit out by the fashion industry. With all the reviews written about the plot I'll skip to the review.

The intro to this 1998 HBO TV movie says that Gia Carangi "In the early eighties...became a legend in the fashion industry."

In real life, she is barely a footnote in the fashion industry. Michale Gross, in his 1995 book "Model," the most exhaustive and exhausting of all books on the fashion industry dismisses her as "a bisexual drug abuser who had a short but visible career."

As you can quickly tell from the sole opening credit (Angelina Jolie, of course) this movie is an Angelina Jolie vehicle. The problem is that this vehicle sputters throughout due to overwrought dialogue and acting which ties nicely back into the overwrought intro.

With her post-lip, pre-nose job plastic surgery Angelina Jolie looks remarkably similar to Katie Holmes at certain angles.

This type of movie-making reminds one of the old gangster movies of the '30's and '40's. It purports to be a warning of the dangers of its subject while maximally exploiting it; in this case with nudity instead of guns.

The two hour length of the movie is more tortuous than Angelina's death scenes.

Two stars, one for each attractive boob, real or not.

2stars - "Gia-Maudlin Melodrama" (Choice Critic)

This movie is not for the faint-hearted. No happy endings here. Just alot of edgy,powerful acting. It is the story of a young girl from Philadelphia who makes it big as a model in NYC and the viewer gets to see her evey step of teh way.

Angelina Joile is fabulous in her portrayal of Gia Carangi-a supermodel from the late 1970s-early 1980s era-whose rise to the top of the modeling world is almost as fast as her descent into drug addiction which ultimately was her undoing.

But what makes this HBO movie so realistic was that Joile actually becomes Carangi. And by the end of the movie you cant help but feel emphathy for the character even though her actions are ultimately self-destructive.

If you like sex this movie has it. If you like drama its got that too. But most of all it has strong acting and an early role that eventually paved the way for Joile's climb to superstar status.

5stars - "Realistic portrayal of America's first Supermodel" (Tuvan Uner)

Anjolina Jolie did a wonderful job with this role however the writers took a lot of liberties with Gia's life. Everyone makes her mom seem like the bad guy but Gia's issues ran deeper than the lack of her mother's love like the writers want the public to believe. Gia was most likely bipolar which little was done for or known about in the 80's. Gia was a truly beautiful woman but I would wager that she thought and felt as though she were a man. Today we have a label for what I think she was and that is Transgendered. If she were born in the 80's, she would most likely be alive today with medication and a better understanding of who she really is.

John Cameron Mitchell is a one-man force of nature here, as actor, director and writer. He'd performed the role many times, but there's a freshness of the futilty of poor Hedwig that can't be denied. As a stage effort, it was slow to gain momentum, and when it was finally established, no one thought it could be done by anyone else. Well, many did, including Ally Sheedy and Sarah Bernhard, and this is all brought out in the extras on the DVD. Mr. Mitchell is in command of this enigmatic, complex character, and one can only sit back in awe of the presentation. Sad, reflective, scorned, hated, abused...it's a character that everyone can identify with.

I have probably a dozen different reviews of this movie in various stages of completion on my computer. The problem is that I keep trying to say everything I want to say about it, and there just isn't enough time or space in this world for it all.

I saw Hedwig live many times at the Jane Street Theatre in NYC. I loved her so much there that I refused to see the movie for many years. Not until after I'd seen Shortbus on DVD in the summer of 2008 did I go back and watch Hedwig, to see if it could possibly be as bad as Shortbus was. Not only was it not, it was so GOOD that it made Shortbus even more inexplicable.

I'm not going to go into all the details of why I love Hedwig so much. Stephen Trask's songs are just marvelous, as they always were, and the added movie score is great; John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Pitt are wonderful in the two lead roles (Mitchell's crazed Hedwig dancing and his extreme closeups singing straight into the camera get to me especially; Pitt is perfect as Tommy and does the best lip-syncing ever); and I can't even begin to say what an unbelievably brilliant job Mitchell has done in bringing Hedwig to the screen.

I never imagined I'd say this, but the movie is BETTER than the live show. It's more accessible, human, touching, moving, beautiful, and on and on and on. I watch it over and over, and it gets richer and more fun and more rewarding every time. I'm very grateful to Mitchell, Trask and everybody else involved for creating Hedwig, and then for making her available anywhere, everywhere, forever.

Thank you, guys! You did a good job.

You get to see a butch run around in a bra the whole time. When you're in college and you get a coed to go down on you, you do get desensitized. As a horror film it fails, as an exercise in high camp it's not campy is it goes along, as a porn it works but as a musical it's a masterpiece. This blows away Cats, Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, you name it. The best musical ever made, hands down no insurance needed. It's about 10 PM Central time at at college typing it and no one else in the building, so have times changed since then? Don't be a quack in college- explore your sexuality and that's what this is all about. I loved it it is right here right now when I watched that it night erotic.

This is great entertainment. First of all it is a good musical in the rock style with good songs and at times funny lyrics. Second it is a good visual show where gags and tricks are constantly bombarding us with great creativity. I particularly liked the RKO Radio Pictures' Eiffel Tower falling down into some swimming pool. Third it is absolutely delirious and crazy as for the « adventure » the young couple lives in this castle. They both manage to taste the forbidden fruit, the girl with both the host and his male creature Rocky, and the boy with the host himself. Ambiguity and absolute freedom are the two rules of this perverse universe of transexual Transylvanians from outer space. That sure is a joy ride for those two newly engaged young people who got trapped during a rainstorm on a dead end road with a flat tyre and no spare tyre to repair the flat. Next time remember that you must always have a spare in your trunk, but don't think that such an adventure is going to happen to you just because you're going to forget to put a spare in your trunk. It would be too easy. Nightmares of fear and pleasure only happen when you do not expect them at all.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

What a shame mainstream Hollywood was still squeamish about gay themed films in 1970 cuz "Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band" deserved several Oscar nominations. And, not only should the film have been nominated, but should've won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble Cast. There is not a weak perfomance in the bunch. The actors play off each other to perfection. Things were pretty tough for gays in the 60's (not saying life's a breeze now, but there have been many improvements, with a long way to go). And it's the religious and societal brainwashing that teaches homosexuality is evil that lead to the self-loathing that is depictied in the film, which is the main criticism of the film by many. But if the film is viewed as a retrospect of how things were, it is a most entertaining film that could open the eyes of some people, and thus lead to a better understanding and acceptance of others. As for the DVD itself, the transfer is superb, the extras are entertaining and enlightening, especially the contibuted insights provided by Friedkin, Crowley, and the two surviving cast members, Lawrence Luckinbill (Mr. Lucie Arnaz), and Peter White. ***** rating.
