I Love this movie. Some of the best movies are not fully represented. It a great movie because it a good story. In it I learn a lot about life. One thing that said often "nobody cares"; which you have to watch the movie to understand.

Do not buy from Amazon marketplace vendor MOVIESONSALE1. They advertised Bronx Tale as wide screen but sent the movie in full screen version with misleading packaging. Now I know why their rating is only 89% satisfaction. They collect money and deposit it and accrue interest and wait for the buyer to complain. I waited over a month to watch this movie and I went ballistic. After contacting the seller they claim they will send me a prepaid envelope and a full refund.

Based on Chazz Paliminteri's autobiographical one-man play, "A Bronx Tale" is an impressive coming-of-age story about a young man, Calogero, or "C," as he is called, growing up in an Italian neighborhood in the Bronx during the racially turbulent Sixties who is torn between the ethical standards set by his scrupulously honest bus driver father, Lorenzo, and the flashy appeal of "Sonny," the charismatic local crime boss. When Calogero, as a mere child, witnesses Sonny shoot and kill a man in a street dispute and refuses to pick him out of a hastily organized lineup moments later, Sonny takes the boy under his wing, much to the displeasure of his father. In his own way, Sonny is looking out for the young man's best interests. He is both paternal and protective, urging C to stop hanging out with his troublemaking friends, whom he derisively calls "jerk-offs," and emphasizing the importance of a good education. He also tutors him in the ways of the street. "That way," says C, "I'll be twice as smart as everyone else." Eventually there is a heated confrontation between the boy's father and the gangster, but the lure of Sonny's lifestyle - a flashy red Cadillac, women, nice clothes, "respect" - is too strong for the youngster to resist. There is an interesting assortment of supporting characters - Eddie Mush (the unluckiest gambler in the world), Tony Toupee (so called because of his ill-fitting hairpiece), Frankie Coffee Cake (whose acne-scarred face reminded everyone of a Drake's coffee cake) - and a host of others who apparently made an indelible impression on the young Palminteri. There are several memorable scenes - the humorous antics during a basement craps game; the invasion of Sonny's bar by a gang of bikers, to their regret; Sonny's advising his protege on dating etiquette. Robert De Niro, in his directorial debut, plays Lorenzo, but it is Chazz Palminteri's Sonny who dominates the film throughout. The ending is sad, poignant, and touching, but of course I won't go into that here on the assumption that you haven't seen this movie. As a lay person I'm unable to intelligently critique the technical aspects of any film, but I can state in all honesty that this is one movie I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

The cast in this film was not the best, don't get me wrong George C. Scott, Jack Lemmon, & Hume Cronyn are wonderful in this movie, but the rest of the cast was not very good at all. As for it being to "COLORFUL" it had to many African Americans and they were very rude to white cast in the film. I think your best sticking with original from '57 with Henry Fonda. If your just buying it for the reasons I did for George C. Scott, Jack Lemmon, & Hume Cronyn you'll like their acting only they are the only 3 good preformers in the film.

3stars - "A little to "COLORFUL!"" (Brock Stevens)

'57 is a classic par excellence, but '97 does offer some interesting new features. I use both of the films as a means of processing a vast array of psychological concepts while working with first and second year college students. When I first stop the '97 version, I ask students if they heard anything at the onset of the film. There is a clever insertion of the line, "I'm gonna' kill you," as the sound track presents us with noise of a passing El train. Many of my students can't identify what the voice said, and some don't even remember hearing it.

The '97 cameras pan the room differently during the preliminary vote and do not allow us to see the effect of group conformity to the norm as it is registered in '57 version. The guilty vote is not as polarized as it may superficially appear: the hands of #5, #6 and #11 are raised after some pause, and #9 lifts his up slowly as he notices all hands are in the air. He doesn't see Fonda on his extreme right.

I like the dynamic presented with the inclusion of Afro-American jurors. When #1's (Courtney Vance) leadership is belittled by #10, he shows more confidence than Martin Balsam in the '57 edition. Balsam betrays rationality and retreats to an oral regression which includes nail-biting and a pouting withdrawal.

Jack Lemmon (#8), in the '97 version, starts out very slowly but seems to gain a head of steam with the new dialogue regarding others who might have had a motive for killing the father. He persisted at a higher energy level the rest of the way. When #7 said the boy "deserved" to die, Lemmon came back with a very effective counterargument about those who have gone to the gallows only to have some one else confess to the same crime years later.

Mykelti Williamson (#10), in the '97 version, added a powerful dimension when he accused Ossie Davis (#2) of being just like all those people his age who allow the white intellectuals to manipulate them. His anti-Latino invective later on was so effective as to make one sick. In fact, Mykelti himself, felt great psychological stress enacting this role.

This may reflect my bias, but I liked the idea of the psychiatric testimony. Edward James Olmos (#11), in the '97 version, shone ably in his interpretation of the merits of such testimony. To think of the primal crime (patricide)does not mean that you have followed through on the thought. He went on to say that if all of the jurors took the same battery of tests, perhaps one or two of them might show the same capability.

'97 does not include the photograph of #3's estranged son which heightened his emotional responses. In the cathartic ending, Lee J. Cobb tears the picture in pieces as he lets loose emotionally.

I could go on ad nauseam. Suffice it to say, I prefer both.

5stars - "Will it be '57 or '97? Both perhaps?" (Robert R. Johnson)

Watching this 1997 version of 12 ANGRY MEN recently, I was struck by the fact that four of the 12 actors in key roles here have since passed away. That has absolutely nothing to do with the film's quality, of course (or nothing directly to do with it), but it is striking that key members of this impressive cast--and of course, I'm referring to Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Hume Cronyn and Ossie Davis-- have gone on to that jury box in the sky.

As I say, the fact that these great actors have all died within the past decade is not a direct reflection on the film itself. But it does raise at least one issue that a previous reviewer has noted: namely, the question of the cast's relative age in comparison to the cast of the 1957 classic movie version. Jack Lemmon was 72 when he played Juror #8 in this version. In the original film version, Henry Fonda was a comparatively youthful 52 when he portrayed the same character in 1957. Lee J. Cobb was all of 47 when he took on the part of Juror #3. George C. Scott was pushing 70 when he assayed the role.

In Scott's case, the role of the pained father--alienated from his own son and transferring some of his rage onto the accused--rings a bit false. He's fine until his climactic moment when he makes this association painfully clear (to all three viewers who hadn't already guessed), but at that very point, his performance unravels. Yes, there are 70 year old men estranged from their 30-something children, but one might expect the rage to be somewhat more muted by that point. Scott's wounds seem almost too fresh in this production.

Lemmon's relative maturity is not without its own problems. He is almost too sage. One is never quite sure whether he is really a tentative, but tenacious truth seeker, stubbornly hashing his way through the case's many inconsistencies, or whether he's actually a fine legal mind with a grand strategy that slowly and masterfully unfolds.

The obvious attempts to update the film's action are more annoying than enlightening. It's significant that this time out, the jury is racially mixed (and ethnically too, since two of the jurors are at least vaguely European). And depending on your point of view, it may be a sign of progress overall that African-American characters can be as perceptive or as flawed as any of their cohorts. (One even turns out to be bigoted in the extreme against the Hispanic accused.) But by 1997 could you really get away with having a jury without a single woman on it? No, it wouldn't be the same if the film were called 10 ANGRY MEN AND A COUPLE OF WOMEN WHO AIN'T TOO HAPPY EITHER. On the other hand, all the little updates thrown into the mix (including the presence of a female judge) do nothing to alter the fact that the movie is fundamentally anachronistic from the get-go.

3stars - "12 Moody Guys" (Gregor von Kallahann)

Listen, the actors performing here are all outstanding. The problem is that the script was written for a group of much younger men.

I mean, come on! George C. Scott in Lee Cobb's original role does that corny, over-acted ending about being stabbed with the knife by his son - he looks like he's in his '90s here -
What's his son? Seventy? Get over it, George! It's just ridiculous.

Forget this film - see the play or buy the original film.

2stars - "cast is too damn old!" (Jonathan P. Zipkin)

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers who give the nod to the original version over this remake, but, all in all, it still is a decent film that is a study of the justice system. While not as in depth as the original, this is a worthy remake.

When a young man is on trial for murder, it is up to a jury of twelve men from different ethnicities and backgrounds to decide his fate. When one juror (Jack Lemmon) boldly takes the stance that he believes the man is not guilty, it sets off fireworks and arguments in the jury room. Each man is given their chance to defend their stance, and, as they fight over whether the young man killed a person, some begin to see the errors of their judgment. Highlighted by an all-star cast, there are many well-known actors who are members of the jury, including Tony Danza, George C. Scott, and Edward James Olmos.

The film's subject probably relates to anyone who has had to serve on a jury, and knows the personality clashes that exist within the jury room. What I like about this film is that is really speaks to the idea that one person can have a huge impact in the court of law or in any part of life if they continue to trust their instincts or beliefs. Juror 8 doesn't waver in this regard. Another poignant aspect of the film is the idea of what is fair as far as the jury system goes. As depicted in the film, a few of the jury clearly just wants to "get the case over with" so they can go on with their regular lives. Perhaps one of the subtle messages evoked from 12 Angry Men is that maybe there are flaws in the jury system that need to be addressed.

Twelve Angry Men relies much on dialogue to create suspense (rather than action), and for the fact that they are able to capture it (in this version and in the original), I commend it. Almost the entire film takes place in the jury room with the jurors. If you need big explosions, drive-by shootings, or dramatic car chases, or blood and guts, then this might not be a film for you. This is a film that caters to dealing with the justice system, and the jurors one by one try to understand the psychology and motives of someone accused of murder.

This is a review of the mini series and not of the DVD or format. It is excellent and one of the best mini series ever on television--a standout. Hopefully, more choices and formats will become available to the general public so thay can watch this engrossing production, in its full and un-condensed and un-edited version. It is Deep-Southy in location and studies both the noble and also sinister attributes of three generations of police chiefs in a Southern family, Southern Georgia town. All of the players are at their best, Heston, Carridine, Collins, Williams, et. al.

5stars - ""Too Many Chiefs, Not Enough In. . ."" (Phoebe Stogstill)

I loved this mini series when it was first aired. I later received the 2 tapes edition as a gift, but I was disappointed that many of the scenes were cut.

I had read the book a few years after it was published.

The story is about three police chiefs over a 38 year span in which brutal murders are committed. This movie also deals with racial relations in the south during these different time periods.

The actors were all terific, especially Billy Dee Williams and Wayne Rogers. Both were exactly as I pictured their characters.

The ending was especially touching when Billy Lee discovers that Tyler Watts is really Joshua Cole, a boyhood friend long lost. This ending is different from the book, in which Billy Lee never learns who Tyler Watts is.

Parts of this is sad, when Will Henry Lee and Marshall Peters are killed. This is a tear jerker.

Keith Caradine was perfect in the role of Foxy, who was a very menacing and scary guy.

I hope to see this on DVD soon. Does anyone know why this is not available? If so, please enlighten me. I am tempted to buy a region 2 player, since that particular DVD is available.

I am hoping that the DVD will be released soon as originally aired without any cutting out of scenes.

I first watched this tv mini when I was about 11 years old. It was scary to me. I always held my hands in front of my face when old Foxy Thunderburk would come on screen. I remember thinking about how old Sonny was so mean to people,especially blacks. I was glad when Foxy buried him and his motorcycle. I loved the acting as well. I am a great fan of the first and third chief, as well as Charles Heston. I have watch "Chiefs" twice in my life time. It has been over 13 years since I have watched it. I would love to own it this Christmas 2008. I'm going to start looking for it. I want the extended version.

Like others, I taped the miniseries CHIEFS when first broadcast and have enjoyed watching it ever since; in fact, last year I burned a copy of my worn old VHS tape into disc since it appears it won't be released anytime soon in region 1. I would suspect there is a contractual reason [perhaps Heston himself? I understand he always thought he gave one of his best performances in the flm...] it has not yet been released.
CHIEFS is one of those rare films whose story not only spans decades- but which laso stands up well even today with its topical subject matter.

5stars - "A must have movie, but it needs to be on DVD!" (Michael Marcum)

I first saw this movie in the theater as a boy with my father. It's stuck with me ever since and remains on the list of my top ten favorite films. Fortunately I was able to pick up an old VHS copy several years ago.

Remote Mountains, Eerie Mines, Mysterious Bagpipe Music Drifting through the Misty Woods, Rapelling into Bottomless Mine Shafts, Crashing Float Planes into Frigid Lakes, Gold!,... What more can you ask for in an adventure film? I never tire of watching this film. It is very UNIQUE! Much of the movie is filmed in actual mine shafts. It is dark, eerie, and mysterious.

General Plot (Warning some spoilers!):

The film begins with a man being pulled by the ankles from rubble inside a mine shaft by another man. You think he is being rescued. Instead the rescuer lifts a pick axe and finishes the man off. We then move to Nick Mancuso's character dramatically quiting his job as a pilot for a large mining company. You find out as he visits the home of Kim Basinger's character that their friend has disappeared somewhere in the remote mountains of British Columbia and Nick thinks he knows why... he's found Gold! Nick and Kim are then off to search for their missing friend in a rickety, old float plane. After a nearly fatal crash landing on the Stikine River, they finally arrive at a remote, mountain lake that Nick believes would be the destination of their friend. Following mysterious bagpipe music into the woods they come upon a cabin hidden deep in the dark woods and encounter Charlton Heston's character. Charlton introduces them to his "diggings", a creepy mine shaft dug into the side of the mountain near his cabin. Nick immediately suspects that Charlton has something to do with their friend's disappearance and it's likely got something to do with Gold! The race is on to find this Gold and get out alive.

I LOVE this film! I highly recommend this film to those who are looking for something out of the ordinary. It would be particularly interesting to those interested in mining, the mountains of British Columbia, Charlton Heston, Kim Basinger, or adventure mysteries!

Just a quick review to say that this looks strangely like a copy of a copied VHS tape. The faces have a shiny quality to them, and the while film is not clear in any means. I hope it is released on DVD someday. I remember when I ordered this movie there was one available for way over $100. I guess that would be an original? The copy I got was $29.95. It started off with video static, then went to a Vestron Video screen, followed by the titles and the movie. I know I bought a used movie. My question is if it was a new used movie or a copy. I am giving this movie three stars because it plays. It took over three weeks to reach me and when it got here it was a little disappointing.

For the most part, this is a good film: well-written, well-photographed, well-directed and well-acted. But for me, Gene Tierney simply does not have the beauty or strength or charisma that the part of Laura seems to call for. She's certainly pretty, but not beautiful or striking. She's competent, but I wouldn't call her brilliant. I'm told that she is all these things but I really can't see it for myself. I can't, in my own imagination, see her walking into a room and turning everyone's head around, making men "desirous" or women "envious". An actress like Katherine Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman (obviously without any accent) or Lauren Bacall would have fit the part more convincingly.

5stars - "On the top of my list" (W. Blair)

The presence of Vincent Price alone is enough to make this film worth watching. The man had one of the most memorable theatrical personalities that ever graced the screen. His voice rang like a haunting tones cutting through fog. His smallest gestures expressed volumes of expression and emotion. Even when he overacted (which was much of the time) he did it with a singular type of flair that made it engaging rather than laughable. He had style. He had flair. And he had panache. That's a star. That's what makes an icon. His role in "Laura" shows yet another facet of his abilities. His characterization of Shelby Carpenter is of a man who's weak yet charming and fickle yet strangely loyal. It's a complex role and he managed it with the aplomb typical of his bearing. It's no surprise that his presence is dominant most of the times he's on the screen.

This isn't meant to downplay the contribution from others in the cast. Gene Tierney, one of the al-time great beauties of the silver screen is radiant in the title role. She manages a combination of aloofness and down home appeal that's nothing short of remarkable. The woman was as talented as she was lovely. Dana Andrews was cast perfectly as the detective who falls for the mysterious beauty as he unearths the details of her life. His portrayal of a man whose dedication becomes love and, ultimately, dangerous obsession is a gripping one. Judith Anderson gives a strong performance as the Aunt of the title character. Her turn as the slightly snobbish woman who may or may not be a rival is engaging and could have stood more screen time than it was given.

Then there's Clifton Webb. Few actors have been so adept at playing characters so loathsome there's nothing to do but hate them. His character is loathsome the moment he opens his mouth. After that he's easy to hate simply for being there. There's no redeeming the nature of the man he plays. He is vile. He is arrogant. He holds his fellow beings in contempt. The few he likes he sees as possessions. He's patronizing and/ or annoyingly condescending towards everyone. And yet it's impossible not watch him. Clifton Webb was a master of this. His personality was nearly as theatrical as Price's. Watching the two of them together is a treat that's not to be missed.

The film itself is a pleasure to watch. The story by Vera Gaspary (novel) and Jay Dratler (screenplay) is tightly written and filled with rich characterizations. The Direction, by Otto Preminger, is terse and moves the story at a brisk pace. Emotions are kept veiled but always feel close to the surface. The cinematography by Joseph LaShelle is excellent. As is the case in many of the better films from the 'Noir' genre the construction of the individual scenes allows the eye to 'read' the picture almost from one frame to the next. The lighting and photography compliment the shots perfectly. The sets are full and rich but also uncluttered. On the downside some of the costumes are fashion disasters (perfect for those "What Were They Thinking" montages) and there's one enormous gaffe near the end of the picture. That's what cost it one star here incidentally. That gaffe should have been caught before the film was ever released. More attention to the final edit could have fixed the second faux pas but some of those clothes (especially the hats that belong in a story about a white whale and a deranged captain) are beyond hope.

But those are small complaints. 'Laura' is a film that stands the test of time, and with good reason. The story it tells is a good one. The passions it deals with are timeless. And it's done well. That counts as much as anything else. The restoration and transfer to DVD is excellent. This disc comes with some strong extras as well. There are biographical features on both Price and Tierney. Both are informative, absorbing and well worth watching. There's also a deleted scene that's shown separately and an extended version of the original release.

This is a good package. Fans of older films will love it. For people who aren't familiar with older films it may be a good place to start.

I've always loved this movie and it was a real treat to be able to get it on DVD given it's age. The picture quality was great and it even included a scene that was cut from the original release and I don't believe has been included in the television runs.

I've always loved this movie and it was a real treat to be able to get it on DVD given it's age. The picture quality was great and it even included a scene that was cut from the original release and I don't believe has been included in the television runs.

I'm not going to comment on the movie itself because everyone already knows how great that is. My review is on the quality of the Blu-ray release. The picture quality is virtually flawless. They took a 14-year-old movie and made it look brand new. It's actually good enough to use if you're showing off your new flat-screen TV. I can't really comment on the sound quality because I don't have a big fancy sound system (yet), but the sound from my TV is pretty good as far as TVs go, and this one sounds pretty good. If you have Blu-ray and like this movie at all, this disc is a must-own.

This is one movie that is just as great to watch as it is to read! Ray Milland is just wonderful, in fact the entire cast is well chosen. Being in Black and White just makes it that much better. NO CGI, but interestingly good special effects. I have it on VHS, but want it on DVD.

One of the things which makes this film so remarkable is the script, as other reviewers have noted. Perhaps the humour and pacing might be better understood if it were realised that Dodie Smith scripted the movie -- the writer to I Capture the Castle and The 101 Dalmatians. She was living in the States at the time to escape the bombing of England during WW2, and this was one of her projects. An amazing script, performed brilliantly by the likes of Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and the radiant (and ultimately fatally flawed) Gail Russell. And the music by Victor Young, Stella By Starlight, is incredibly evocative. A truly "must-see" film.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! One of the best ghost stories ever filmed. Why oh why is it not on DVD? Who needs special effects, loud noisy sound effects, etc. when you have great acting and a ghostly figure that sends chills up and down your spine and most of it comes from using your imagination. With all the crap that is put on DVD's, what is wrong with a studio that would make big bucks if they gave people what they want, good entertainment, good writing and great acting. I too read the book and even though it does not follow the story to a tee, it still enchances.

I first saw this movie when I was little and probably too young to understand some if it. It has been a favorite of mine for years and years. I agree with all - this is the gold standard on a scary movie. And while we all agree it sends shivers down your spine, there is such fantastic dialogue and some really, really funny comments from the cast. Ray Milland was superb, as was all the cast. And of course, "Stella by Starlight" -- the music is just the cherry on top. I have the VHS tape, but would love a DVD as well.

This is a good thriller with lots of creepy touches. Roy Scheider is a recently divorced Manhattan psychiatrist. One of his patients is murdered and both the police and the victim's beautiful girlfriend (Meryl Streep) who seems to be the top suspect contact him. There is an immediate romantic attraction between Scheider and Streep and Scheider attempts to solve the murder using information the deceased man revealed to him during his twice weekly appointments. The most important info is a disturbing dream which is reenacted on screen in a memorable and truly chilling manner.

The deceased and Streep's character worked together at "Christen's" auction house specializing in antiquities and much of the film is set in this affluent world of high end art. Manhattan at night is used to good effect throughout the film and a fine soundtrack also enhances the atmosphere. Meryl Streep is especially good and needed to learn no new dialect or alter her own lovely appearance for this part. The ending is more than a little contrived and pretty improbable but the movie is very worth watching for any lovers of Streep or thrillers influenced by Alfred Hitchcock.

Meryl Streep never fails to impress--she's a great actress--however, in this movie her great talent is truly wasted. The story, as it plays out, is full of plot holes, unbelievables, cheap gimmiks, and false suspense which even some good directing by Robert Benton couldn't save. I felt that the characters were like pawns being being manipulated by the author to fulfill the goal of his plot rather than true people acting according to their behavioral traits.

5stars - "An Excellent Mystery" (The Magician)

This is a terrific little suspense thriller that's just waiting for rediscovery on DVD. Director Robert Benton, fresh from his triumph with KRAMER VS. KRAMER, turned his attention to that most popular pastime of modern directors--paying homage to the giants of the past. He directed this 1982 film as his tribute to Alfred Hitchcock.

STILL OF THE NIGHT has all the classic elements of Hitchcock--the murder investigation, the innocent bystander (Roy Scheider) who must solve the puzzle to clear his own name (and save his own life), the icy blond beauty (Meryl Streep) who may or may not be the killer, the creepy Long Island mansion where the clifftop climax takes place. Most of all, we have several examples of Hitch's most distinctive contribution to cinema--the suspense sequence that builds slowly to a payoff. The symbolic dream, the adventure in the creepy basement laundry room, the eerie midnight excursion into Central Park, the long section at the swanky auction house with the hero desperately trying to deflect the authorities who are closing in--these are pure Hitchcock, and Benton is better than most at making these classic ideas seem fresh and immediate.

What strikes me most strongly about SOTN is the loving care and dedication of everyone involved in the project, not just the direction and writing (Benton and David Newman) but the cinematography (Nestor Almendros), music (Broadway composer John Kander), and even the costumes (Albert Wolsky). And that cast can't be beat, from the glamorous stars right down to the extras. If you love Hitch as much as I do, give this film a look. And Fox Home Video really, really should put it on DVD (they own the MGM/UA library now, and the rights to this movie). Join me in letting Fox know that.

5stars - "The Hitchcock Touch" (Tom S.)

I saw this several years ago and noticed it was on a late movie recently. This time I was more struck by the quality of the work than the first time. It seems that almost every aspect of this film reeks with elegance and subtlety. First of all, Meryl Streep is great. This is before she became so affecting as she was wont to do in her later films. Then Roy Schneider as the psychiatrist turns in a brilliant understated performance. The villianess was incredible in her chameleon-like personality and actions. (The scene at her apartment where the camera slowly slides to reveal the mutilated detective will stay with you for a long time.)But it is the growing relationship between Streep and Schneider that gives substance to the film. Especially endearing was the dinner at his mom's (also a psychiatrist who keeps needling him about his singlenes). But it is the eerie mansion where the story unfolds and comes to a blockbuster conclusion. There are no monsters, aliens or hauntings but few cinematic scenes have been more terrifying.I can't conclude without praise for the magnificent score. It was brooding, melancholy and seemed to flow out of the action. This should be reissued on a DVD but so far has not made it.

I have a close friend whose husband is disabled. He watches a lot of T V mostaly movies he has bought or obtained somehow. He is a more clasic movie buff. He mentioned the movie and was explaining the plot and such. He wished he could see it again. I came home and found it. I gave it to him as a birthday present. He was extatic. He has watched it many times I am told. It arrived in great shape.

First of all, I have no idea why this film is not available on DVD yet. You might be looking at my rating right now and thinking "He only gave it 3 stars? Who cares if it comes out on DVD!" Let me explain.

"The List of Adrian Messenger" is a standard murder mystery but it is done with a unique twist. Someone is killing off heirs to a family fortune and its a race against time to stop the killer (i know, it sounds cliche) but the twist here is that several big name stars from this era make cameo's in the film in disguise. This is in conjunction with the killer, who commits all of the murders while wearing various disguises. This is meant to throw the audience off. The viewer is supposed to wonder if the police are talking to the killer or just some innocent bystander. The only flaw here is that the make-up is not the best quality it could have been and some of the actors in disguise don't do the greatest job of disguising their voice. These were the flaws that forced me to give the movie 3 stars. It's an enjoyable film (and I do own a VHS copy) but you know who the killer is almost from the start and can usually tell when he's in make-up. Its also fun to see actors like Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, and Kirk Douglas in these make-up disguises.

On a side note, I cannot figure out why this hasn't been attempted as a remake. A director could modernize the story a bit (the original was made in 1963) but the true gold lies in the make-up techniques currently available. With the make-up techniques available today, people would be hard pressed to figure out who was in disguise. I'm sure a lot of actors would love to do a cameo. Place them in small scenes, something that takes up a day of their time (most of it in the make-up chair) and audiences would go just to figure out who is their favorite actors. The original film used five actors but a re-make could use as many as 20. See if the cameo actors would work to have their day's wages go to their favorite charities. That could be an additional incentive to get people involved. I think the film would be a lot of fun and, as far as remakes go, this one would be a winner. Watch the original and see what you think.
Hopefully the studio is working on the DVD. If not, you can probably find the tape for a cheap price.
