My favorite part was the end! It has some very interesting and fun scenes!

5stars - "Loved it!"

Having seen both versions several times I have to say I like both. Yes there are stark differences in the main character Willy Wonka and there were some other minor differences in the characters of the children and their parents. Actually, there are a great many differences between Tim Burton's version and the original Mel Stuart version. Mel Stuart's version was more like a musical, highlighted with several musical interludes presented by Gene Wilder and his portrayal of Willie Wonka and one other musical interlude given by the character Varuca Salt - the "I want it now" song. Both versions had Oompah-Loompah songs - after all, it wouldn't be the same without the Oompah Loompah's musical mantras touting the social problems of misbehaved, spoiled children. I did, however, prefer the original Oompah-Loompah performances. The lead up story, basically Charlie's story, for the most part is unaltered with Burton's version deviating slightly to include Charlie's father, a man who works at a toothpaste factory, and his mother is non-working to stay at home and take care of the ramshackle hut of a house and Charlie's grandparents. In the original, we do not know of Charlie's father and his mother works at a laundry, washing clothes. Tim Burton's remake also does not include "The Candy Man" song or Charlie's theme "Cheer up Charlie". There is one other song when Charlie's grandfather get's out of bed for the first time in twenty years. It's not in Burton's version either. In contrast, the only "musical" interlude in Burton's version aside from the Oompah-Loompah songs was a cheesy "Willie Wonka" mechanical doll performance at the entry to the Wonka Factory. This performance while starting out innocently enough soon transcends in to a scene more apropos for a "Chucky" film - hideous and revolting!
Over all I give both versions equal ratings. In the following I discuss in general the differences I noticed and meant the most to me. If you for some odd reason have not seen either movie and wish not to know the details then please read no further. They have certainly been on TV several times.

The parallels:
Augustus Gloop, the gluttonous brat: No differences between the two versions.

Violet Bueregard, the gum chewing brat: In both versions she takes the gum from Wonka and, at the behest of Wonka not to, begins to chew the gum. The 2 movies do deviate at the point only slightly where as Wilder's Wonka does, in a more nonchalant manner, say "stop, don't", Depp's Wonka simply bemoans where the process goes wrong. In both versions, Voilet turns violet and becomes very, very round and plump, like a blueberry, only in Burton's version, more so. The end is the same- to be rushed off to the blueberry squeezing room!

Varuca Salt, the spoiled rotten brat who gets anything she wants: All through the movie (both versions) she demands her father to buy her this or get her that. The difference here is that in the original she sees giant geese that lay giant golden eggs - for Easter, of course. In Burton's version, and as I understand from the original book, there are squirrels - who test and shell walnuts. Of course, Varuca demands her father to buy her a squirrel, or in the case of the original, a goose. In either version she attempts to steal her prize and ends up going down the garbage chute to the "incinerator". Which we find out isn't working that day - whew, thank goodness for that ;).

Mike Teevee, the brat with a television addiction: The same annoying "know it all" brat. The difference being that in the original he was addicted to westerns and in Burton's version he is a video-game addict. I liked the way in which both Wonka characters dealt with Mike through the course of the movie. The end for Mike was the same in both versions.

The major differences (aside from the musical score and the characterization of the Oompa- Loompas);

Willy Wonka: The eccentric chocolate mogul. There are stark differences between Mel Stuart's version and Tim Burton's version.
Mel Stuart's Version of Wonka portrayed by Gene Wilder is a light hearted, whimsical and somewhat eccentric man where as Tim Burton's version portrayed by Johnnie Depp is a considerably darker character who has deep emotional evulsions toward parents - linked to an apparently overbearing father who was a dentist, as we are repeatedly shown in no less than 3 "flashback" scenes. Depp's Wonka was definitely eccentric. His portrayal, however, stopped well short of whimsical and was in no way light hearted, but rather more stogy with a slight after taste of stale comedy.

Then finally to Charlie Bucket: The poor and destitute "good" child. Here, the story isn't quite the same, either. The differences are many; I'll touch on the most notable.
In the original, there is no father figure. Charlie is closest to his grandfather, who hadn't stepped foot out of bed in 20 years. In Burton's version, Charlie has a father figure who had just been laid-off at the "toothpaste" factory, his job being replaced by a robot. In both versions, however, Charlie does go to the chocolate factory with his grandfather.
In the original, Charlie and his grandfather DO get in to mischief by taking a sip of some "Fizzy Lifting Soda" and end up floating up in to a, for lack of better description, smokestack. They do return to ground unharmed and continue on with their adventure - after all, the story is about Charlie. In the remake, no such detours. Charlie was a perfect child all the way through. In the original, Charlie did not initially win. He had to prove his "goodness" by returning the "Everlasting Gobstopper" at the end of the adventure. At which point Wilder's Wonka awarded Charlie the factory; End of movie. In Burton's version, Depp's Wonka, since Charlie is the last remaining child, the factory is awarded to him, BUT, unlike the original, Wonka tells Charlie his family can't come with him. The movie languishes on with Charlie actually showing Depp's Wonka that having a family is a good thing and eventually Charlie wins out, reuniting Depp's Wonka with his father and then obtaining the factory and moving his family in as well. There is hardly a mention of the "Everlasting Gobstopper" in Burton's version. There was a "sub plot" in the original version that centered around honesty. Wonka's chief competitor was Slugworth Candies. A man posing as Slugworth approaches each child offering him/her cash fortune to get an "Everlasting Gobstopper". A tempting trial for each child, no doubt. While this sub-plot does make an appearance in the Burton version, it ends up fading away never to be seen again. In Stuart's version, this sub plot would be the deciding point for Charlie, had he not returned the Gobstopper to Wonka, he would not have won the "prize". This sub plot proves honesty above all else.

Let's not forget the flyover in the glass elevator. While minor to the movie, it should be noted that in the original we never see the end result of the children who lose out. This would be the end of Stuart's version as Charlie, grandpa, and Wonka fly onward and the credits roll.
In Burton's remake, we get to see each of children as they exit the factory in a cartoonish portrayal of what each child went through.

Violet, still violet in color is now more flexible, but otherwise unharmed and apparently enjoying her new found flexibility.

Varuca and her father exit covered in trash. Varuca spots the flying glass elevator and quips, obviously not learning her lesson, "Daddy, I must have a glass elevator!" This time, however, Mr. Salt retorts quite shortly "the only thing you're getting is a bath!"

Mike Teevee, having been shrunk in the Wonka-vision is now considerably taller and very, very thin; having been stretched in the taffy pulling machine.

Then we see the glass elevator crash through the roof of Charlie's house where Depp's Wonka delivers the prize to Charlie. Telling him he has won the factory, but then dashing his hopes by telling him his family can't come along. No, sadly, this is not the end of the movie as it languishes on. We see later Charlie working a shoe-shine stand and Wonka sitting, pretending to read a news paper, taunting Charlie about his decision and wondering why such a smart child would want his parents around. This continues with Charlie convincing Wonka to find his father, Wilber Wonka DDS. They do, they meet, the Wonka's engage in a rather reserved father/son embrace. We then see Charlie and Willie returning to Charlie's house for dinner - but this time, the house is actually IN the factory. Wonka did give the factory to Charlie AND allowed Charlies entire family move in.

I did prefer Stuart's version of the Oompah-Loompahs. Burton's version seemed like a cloning production in overdrive. All looking exactly the same. Which, in reality it was. In Burton's version, Gordeep (Deep) Roy played ALL of the Oompah Loompahs - with a little help from technology, of course.

All that said, I have not read Dahls original novel. I have read the introduction for the screenplay, however. The Intro scenes of Burton's version do, for the most part, follow the Dahl intro. From the point of the children gathering at the gates of the Wonka Factory and forward, I can't say. Perhaps I will have to obtain a copy of the novel and find out.

5stars - "Definately the classic telling" (Sherry)

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of those movies thats just so twisted its not even funny. The first time I saw this movie, I was about four and it scared the crap out of me. I remember the sadistic, demented Willy Wonka played by Gene Wilder (Who is probably the best thing this movie has as a fan of his other movies.)and the hellish Oompa Lompas with their little songs. Let's not forget that tunnel w/ the snakes and chickens, I had nightmares for months. Was it wrong that I felt sorry for the fat boy who got sucked up the tunnel? Or the little girl who got turned into that blueberry? I mean it was sick!!! Their kids they don't even know their behavior is wrong! I mean of course I know its fake but still. You never even know what happened to them (their actually is a small line about them being alright but I didn't hear it until like the 3rd viewing.) The special effects a downright terrible, even for back then. The chocolate river looked like some kiddy w/ mud in it. The musical scores (Besides "The Candy Man") were downright awful.
What I don't understand most is that this movie is considered a classic. Its played regularly on tv, and was shown almost daily at my school. If this movie is for you that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion, no need to bash me in your comments, that's just stupid. All I want to say is that I have no idea how a movie that was a critical and box office flop became regarded as a children's classic. This movie is way to disturbing for young children and maybe some adults. I'm even a fan of the book and I don't like this. What we fans need to a truth to the book adaption. Then we'll be satisfied.

Ahhhh, Victoria Abril... she is quite the actress! And as anything that Almodovar makes, this is phantastic. The subject could be really "noir", but the way it is treated, it has its black humor side, a specialty of Pedro's. A relationship between a daughter and her mother, choices they made have a profound impact on their lives even decades later. A mysterious procecutor, a fun and strange transvestite, they all have something in common. I feel that one must give the plot away if one starts telling the story, so I won't. Suffice it to say that this is one of the best movies you could ever see! Deeply human and mysterious, filled with unexpected turns and a surprise ending! But we can never be 100% sure, if you know what I mean....
And the sound track is worth having, too, wonderful pieces! They are outstanding in their own right!

5stars - "Steamy and suspenseful to the end" (M. V. Vooren)

Like all great Almodovar movies, traditional gender roles are subverted in 'High Heels'. In fact for WASP suburbanite America, much of this plot would seem like an episode of Jerry Springer. Mother abandons daughter for singing career, daughter marries mother's former lover, mother continues to have affair with son-in-law while daughter becomes pregnant through a night of passion with a drag queen. How ironic it is then that Almodovar takes much of his influence for this movie from Douglas Sirk. A director noted for his melodramas about late 50's/early 60's family life amongst WASP suburanites in America. In fact this meshing of a traditional film genre with more modern edgy characters has even been given a name - an Almodrama -.The title 'High Heels' refers to the time when Rebecca was a child and couldn't sleep until she heard the high heels of her mother click-clacking her way home from work outside her bedroom window. Despite being abandoned by her mother, Rebecca never lets go of her love for her and tries all her life to be as 'good' as her in her life and in her loves.While this movie was critically panned by many critics both in Spain and abroad, 'High Heels' went on to become the then, second highest-grossing film in Spanish history, ('Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown' being the first!)

4stars - "Almodrama" (R Jess)

Although it's not a materpiece, a bit slow in some parts, every Almodovar film is always a gift for the senses, and Tacones Lejanos "High Heels" is not the exception. Exceptional acting performances by Victoria Abril and Marisa Paredes, amazing cinematography, marvelous songs by Luz Casal ("Un año de Amor" and the heartbreaking "Piensa En Mi"), funny impersonators secenes (Miguel Bose aka Letal), and a must-seen for all the fans of the House Of Chanel with big exposure of clothes, jewelry, bags, glasses (eraly 90s collections). At last, i recommend this film for just having a big time with this funny Almodovar.

...typical Almodovar. If you happen to like him for that, then, you will enjoy this film. I like the fact that Almodovar keeps his style unchanged, from working with virtually same group of actors every time to using the same combination of colors every time. This repeatition creates a sence of continuity and familiarity, which allows us to enjoy every film to its fullest.While this film is not Almodovar's funniest one, it is definitely one of the most exploring, when it comes to the parent-child relationships.And again, Almodovar, is at his best, when he talks about women... Just how in the world does he manage that? Well, it does not matter how; what matters is that he DOES.

5stars - "Women, their problems, and more women with their problems..."

I watch many foreign films, and have always had trouble getting into the serious dramas, because I have to rely so heavily on the subtitles, which distracts me from immersing myself into the action. Foreign comedies are easy to get into. And, though this does have some humorous bits, it's one of the few foreign dramas with which I really became engrossed. I found myself guessing at every clue of the mystery and calculating every next step of the action. It may be bad form to give away clues to great mysteries, but here's a tidbit to keep you from being frustrated at trying to guess the mystery; the judge and the transvestite are the same guy. Almodovar is a great director. For a lighter fare, with a sadonic bite, try Almodovar's other masterpieces, TIE ME UP TIE ME DOWN or WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.

This is a favorite for me and my family from my parents in their 70's to my cousins in their early 20's. Mom talks about remembering her mother's outfits just like the one's in the picture and dad talking about that time in Spanish history. Beautiful shots, great musical background and the most histerical situations that can happen to a family. But at the end, family is still family!!! Come and enjoy Belle Epoque, as we do!!!

5stars - "Nostalgia, comedy and beauty...Belle Epoque!!!" (Valle Menier)

I can watch this movie over and over. The cast is interesting, and in some cases, good looking. While there is some interesting commentary, this movie is more for enjoyment than serious thinking. As the main character has romantic encounters one after the other with four sisters of different personalities, you secretly hope he ends up with each of them in the end. The sisters and their father make up a very non-traditional family for the period, yet come acoss as being more well-balanced and likable than local teacher and his mother who are very traditional. Of course the backdrop of this movie is the republican period right before the Spanish civil war, so there are some issues pertaining to the church, government, and social structure, but the best part of the movie is the gorgeous look of the film and the romantic storyline.

Film set in 1930s Spain at the time of great political changes in the country. Young (former) seminary student who deserted from the Spanish Army is trying to get a new start in life. Circumstances bring him to a house of a man who has four (4) daughters: one is a young widow, another is engaged, the third one is a lesbian, while the youngest one is a virgin. As this young, confused man is jumping to bed with each one of them, hoping for love, it is less comical and more boring to observe a poor creature trapped in he house of women who is treated as a sex toy and yet gets lucky to marry the youngest one. Too unbelievable to be taken in even as a comedy. One of the early roles for (then) young Penelope Cruz.

3stars - "Trying to be cute" (Reader)

I like romantic comedy. I like Spanish films. I am not a prude. I did not like this movie. There was very little character development. The plot consists almost entirely of him briefly hooking up with 4 different sisters. Should I be happy for his discovery of free love? Think he's a sleaze? He seems to be somewhere in the middle, just bumbling along.

And what am I to think of the sister who accepts his profession of love for her and only her after she's watched him declare his love for the other 3? Is the wedding in the end a happy ending? I can't decide because I don't know what to think of the people who get married.

Maybe it is all a political allegory that I don't get because I know so little about this period in Spanish history.

I'm not going to comment on the movie itself because everyone already knows how great that is. My review is on the quality of the Blu-ray release. The picture quality is virtually flawless. They took a 14-year-old movie and made it look brand new. It's actually good enough to use if you're showing off your new flat-screen TV. I can't really comment on the sound quality because I don't have a big fancy sound system (yet), but the sound from my TV is pretty good as far as TVs go, and this one sounds pretty good. If you have Blu-ray and like this movie at all, this disc is a must-own.

I've learned to accept Almodovar as he has (ahem) matured & gotten serious. He is my favorite director so I support all his progressions. However! I'm deeply & irrevocably in love with the movie Kika, its colors, its actors, its characters, its music, its dialogue, its spell. Having watched it as much as I have, I've analyzed scenes & themes that otherwise would have escaped a one time viewing only. For example, notice how Ramon kneels in front of three women, for different purposes. First the model in the opening credits as he photographs her in bed. Next, he kneels in front of his dead mother as he opens her blouse to reveal her wound. Finally, in front of Kika as he makes love to her. The posters throughout the film hint at the action to take place in the future scenes. The dialogue is hilarious beyond belief & is not all translated or not translated acurately in the subtitles. If you are an Almodovar fan, you owe it to yourself to study Spanish & brush up on Castillian regionalisms to get the fully, mordant sinuousness of the dialogue. Kika is a black comedy & must be enjoyed as such, otherwise one would not laugh at the bizarre costumes, the multiple deaths, the rape as much-needed outlet for the retarded ex-porn star, the fickleness of love, the unfaitfulness throughout. Finally, I suspect that public taste or America's increasing discomfort with black comedy when its applied to rape, is delaying or preventing the rerelease of Kika on dvd. Its available in Brazil, but, of course not with English subtitles.

4stars - "about the movie jamon jamon....." (Ang Poon Kah)

I would just like to point out that Jamon Jamon was originally released in Europe in 1991, and that Penélope Cruz was just 17 years old at the time - not 19.

I was surprised to find that this movie made it past the censors and remains available today. Underage nudity is generally permitted in non sexually-explicit situations (ie, family photos at a naturist colony). However, "Jamon Jamon" contains fairly explicit scenes with [...]

If underage teen sexploitation is your thing, then dig in. If not, Penélope Cruz fans should skip this boring flick and buy the funnier, sexier, non-explicit "La Belle Epoque" instead.

Anyway, "Jamon Jamon" (translation: Ham Ham) takes it's story straight from those overblown dramas of the 1980's like "Dynasty" or "Knot's Landing". The twist is just how far these characters will go to fulfill their "lustful" desires in spite of the consequences. Although every character in the film is dead serious, this is actually a comedy, and not a bad one at that. A sort of "Dallas goes Airplane" without the cheap gags.

To describe the plot without giving away too much is daunting, but here goes; A young man has gotten his girlfriend pregnant. His parents, who run a successful underwear business, dissaprove of their son marrying the daughter of a prostitute. So his mother hires one of the underwear models to seduce the girlfriend, but the mother falls for the underwear model.

With me so far, good. Here's where it gets complicated;

The young man (remember him?) is also having a dallience with the young girl's mother (the prostitute). Meanwhile, the underwear model manages to seduce the young girl, but is still bedding down with the mother (the underwear Mother). The young man has now become insanely jealous which leads to a confrontation with the underwear model. The father of the young man is about the only character with his head on straight, but even he gets involved in this mess.

The performances are first rate and the sex/nude scenes are plentiful. Perhaps the most outlandish is a bullfight with the matadors in the nude (definately something for the ladies...and perhaps a few guys as well).

Those interested in seeing what a young (19 years old at the time) Penelope Cruz looks like nearly naked will not be dissapointed. This film is definately not for the kids.

Overall, "Jamon Jamon" is a very well made comedy whose laughs come from the characters, not from any "jokes". I can certainly recommend it to those looking for a more "sophisticated" sex comedy. The type that American film makers have trouble pulling off...so to speak.

Trivia: The box cover depicts probably the most dramatic sex scene in the film. Problem is, the two people depicted are not the actors in the scene. Perhaps it's a rip on Romance novel book covers?

4stars - "A Love Triangle like no other..." (McGillicutty)

This is a fun film! A black "who's sleeping with who?" comedy that draws its viewers into this bizarre, crazed love triangle. Anyone who is a fan of early Almodovar will get something out of this.The acting is great, especially by Bardem. The script has alot of subtle one-liners, and the sex and nudity is explicit and contributes to the anything goes atmosphere. So if you're looking for a fun dark/tragic comedy with lottsa sex, pick this one up.

Sometimes an aspiring actor has to do a little film to pay the rent or fulfill a contract agreement. What this film shows is how excellent Javier Bardem has become as an actor. He has come along way. Still young Bardem was in great shape. The film might hold your interest in a fun way and the cinematography will hold your attention. I don't mean to embarass the two male actors that are 100 percent nude, but since they probably got a good size paycheck, what the hay. You'll see Javier Bardem pretend bullfighting in blue shorts, then later Javier and Tomas Penco (Tomas Martin) model underwear. Later in the film, Javier Bardem and Tomas Penco decide to have some fun at night time nude bullfighting. These scenes are remarkable to watch because it is a real bull they are teasing. Penelope Cruz and Jordi Molla are also in the film. Javier Bardem and Jordi Molla later starred in SECOND SKIN (2000)

This movie was just as great as when I saw it as a little kid. I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

I remember when this film was first released in the theatres in 1984 and the incredible hype that followed it. The Never Ending Story, based on the book by German author Michael Ende, was the pinnacle of children's fantasy filmaking in the 80's and in many ways superior to its contemporaries The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. The special effects, however dated, were state of the art at the time and can still move audiences.

But what is most impressive is the imagination behind the world of The Never Ending Story. Fantasia is as wonderful a land to visit as Middle-Earth or Oz. With its assortment of fairyland creatures and engaging storyline, it's no wonder that this film has gone on to become a classic. So much thought and care went into designing this film that you won't even be able to forget the catchy theme song performed by 80's rock star Limahl.

In The Never Ending Story, a young boy named Bastian (Barret Oliver) discovers a mysterious book with a strange emblem on the cover in an antique book shop. The book is called The Never Ending Story. Bastian decides to cut class and hide in his school's attic so that he can read the book undisturbed. Here Bastian follows the adventures of a young warrior boy called Atreyu (Noah Hathaway). However, Bastian soon learns that this mysterious book is aware of his every action. Bastian does not know that he is a part of The Never Ending Story which is taking place in real time even as he reads it. Bastian will have to come to grips with the recent death of his mother as well as the fact that he is the only one who can save Fantasia and the Childlike Princess (Tami Stronach) from the terrible Nothing which is threatening to destroy it.

The Never Ending Story is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen and composed by Klaus Doldinger. This film went on to spawn two sequels and two short-lived T.V. mini series. This is a wonderful film that all children ripe with bursting imaginations and fantasy lovers alike will enjoy.

5stars - "The Never Ending Story" (Bucky Erdstein)

This is one of the most wonderfully imaginative movies that every child should see. It has wonderful imagery as well as a tone that encourages them to do their own imagining.

I remember loving this movie when I was a child. When it came to DVD, I bought it up immediately and found, to my surprise, that I still loved it. That's the charm of a well-told story. This is one that children will eat up and parents will enjoy watching with them: both to see their children's eyes light up as well as to simply watch this movie for themselves.

Some of the effects are a little cheesily done by today's standards, but you might be surprised to find that the vast majority are still quite nice even under the more jaded scrutiny of today's audience. That is a testament both of the love and care that was put into constructing this film, and also the simple fact that simple effects, used effectively, can be just as powerful to a story as full CG rendering.

The magic of this film gets diluted in the followups, but this is a classic that all children should see.

As the Peruvian's review indicates, there are certainly Latin Americans who don't want to face part of their political reality, just as there are US citizens who like to deny or rationalize the violence of the United States of North America. The "Indian Wars" of the US empire continue as this film on the oppression of Guatemalan Mayan Indians reveals. While President Clinton did offer a near-apology for our decades of funding and organizing Guatemala's dirty war that killed 200,000 people, our corporatocracy continues to exploit the region and to wage economic warfare via NAFTA, CAFTA and the World Bank.
"Men With Guns" beautifully shows all who care the sort of brutal madness that has been taking place in Central America. I've shared this film with Guatemalan immigrants I know, and they confirm the suffering they endured at the hands of our proxy forces. These US taxpayer funded troops wiped out Guatemalan villages in the same way the Nazis wiped out Russian villages. It's such a disgrace that it happened, and that so few Americans know about it. This film offers us a tool to raise awareness, and civic groups like Global Exchange and Madre offer us opportunities to act in solidarity with the victims of US foreign policy.
I'd also recommend books by Nobel Peace Prize-winner Rigoberta Menchu (who, predictably, had a Yale professor conduct a campaign to cast doubt on her credibility - a standard psy-op tactic of our military establishment) and the DVD documentary, "When the Mountains Tremble."
Also see "Guatemala: Never Again!", the official report of the human rights office of the archdiocese of Guatemala. Sadly, Bishop Juan Girardi was murdered a couple days after turning in that report.

Pensé que tendría algo que ver con "La Ley de Herodes",extraordinaria película de Luis Estrada,pero absolutamente nada que ver.

Federico Luppi, the fine actor from Argentina, takes the lead role as Dr. Fuentes. He sets out to find his former students on the road to places he's never been. The shift in his life is caused by the death of his wife. He sets out in spite of his family not wanting him to leave. The aging doctor first encounters one his former students, now a drug dealer, using the same drugs he taught him to cure others, he is now using them for ill purposes. His journey has only begun and he finds many more dissapointments along the way. This is a beautiful film that is allegorical, historical, contemporary and packed with messages for the viewer to interpret. In his quest to find his students he finds his country to be quite different from the view he had of it prior to his leaving the city. He encounters missing people and tales of abductions from men with guns. The villagers call them white men with guns but are quick to say that the Indios are also now white men. Although the story takes place in an unnamed country, the parallels to Guatemala are clear. Having witnessed a corpse on the roadside while travelling in a bus (everyone gawked with little concern, as though it were a common sight) in Guatemala and seeing the treatment first hand of the military I am pretty sure this is where it is. However, this is unimportant as these occurences of hit squads and paramilitary goons, in cahoots with the military, are a frequent sight in many Latin American countries. Anyway, Dr. Fuentes picks up several people along the way to expand the tale. He picks up a "liberation priest" who abandons his collar and those who believed in him, a former military thug turned thief, an indigenous young woman who doesn't speak since she was raped by soldiers and a street-savy kid who is an orphan and Dr. Fuentes's guide. All represent the society Dr. Fuentes is unaware of and as they tell their sordid stories, amidst flashbacks and surreal dreams, a country whose people live in brutal chaos is revealed . This is a powerful movie, one to be seen more than once in order to fully enjoy. Although the story evolves around Dr. Fuentes and his crew, there are several encounters with a funny couple who are "informed" tourists with bad Spanish accents and worse pronunciation. A completly enthralling film, in spite of its length, that hits close to the harsh reality of life in Latin America. A beautiful film that is set to the backdrops of the jungle and it's relics from the past, as well as present day village life , it is a movie that is visually breathtaking and mentally stimulating. Recommended for those that like movies that carry a political and social commentary. Great stuff, see it before your next vacation to the tropics, so that as the guy from the radio says"and now you know the rest of the story" before you get there.

My kids, who are 4 and 2 1/2, love these Bilingual baby videos. They are always asking me to watch them. I know that they are learning from them since they use the words daily, especially the colors and numbers. I definately recommend them.

This is an OK video, but not worth all the high marks it has earned. It has one monotone womans voice saying spanish words for actions shown on the screen. There really isn't much action or "feeling" in the voice. Some of the images are confusing It reminds me of my adult Spanish learning tapes which are very boring. MY 2 year old loves videos but she doesn't seem overly impressed with this one. She does perk up at some of the images (ballons, dog, kittens, exc..) but overall there isn't much to keep her attention.

My 10-month-old daughter absolutely loves this video and so do I. I bought it for her when she was 8 months and she loves it even more now. She sits there and watches attentively. Funny part is that my daughter goes buserk with excitement during certain phrase or images in the video. When the video is over, she'll make a moaning sound until we re-play it and surprisingly she'll sit through the entire thing.... again!!!! It's very simple for children and it uses images and repetition to re-enforce the words. I am a native speaker and love the fact that the narrator uses a Spanish accent. I've heard and seen samples of other videos and audio and was disappointed to hear an English accent. I think it's important for children to learn to speak Spanish with the correct accent and not sound like someone speaking broken Spanish. Other reviews criticize the quality of the video, but I thought it was pretty good. All and all...buy it; it's worth it.

We purchased this video based on other Amazon evaluations. We are so happy we purchased this video. We wish it was on DVD, but it's not available that way. Even still, it's no big deal to fast forward past the very brief intro (no commercials for other videos, YEA).We got this for my son when he was 8 mo. old (now 18 mo). He loves Bilingual Baby - Spanish even over the Einstein Videos - of which we have like 10! He happily watches it without getting distracted.Additionally, I think this video quickened his learning of the concepts of yes and no. It's so easy to watch. My husband and I have learned - especially the pronounciation. The video focus is on phrazes and words babies and toddlers use most, making it practical too!As a Mom (and the primary cargiver) I find none of it offencive. Which is saying a lot for this neurotic Mom!
