This is the 716th review of this movie! What can I say that has not already been said about this wonderfully compelling movie? I will not comment on the restoration process or the pros and cons of buying the 2-disk or 4-disk set, as this is adequately discussed by many other reviewers. I will say that this movie won 10 Academy awards and is still regarded as the 6th best epic movie of all-time. That should be credentials enough to want to view this extraordinary movie.

Watching this movie is an absolutely delightful experience, and I can just imagine attending the movie in the theatre for the first time! I can just imagine the excitement and the buzz of conversation during the intermission, for the first half of this movie is quite unlike any other movie up to that date in time. This is a visual experience on film unlike any other. The cinematography is what amazed me. The magnificence of the sets, the lighting, the dramatic closing shots of scenes, and the sheer enormity of the film floors the viewer. I will never forget the camera shot of Scarlett looking for the doctor in the streets of Atlanta, going from wounded soldier to wounded soldier as the camera slowly backs away revealing the enormity of the wounded lying in the streets as Sherman's cannons bomb the city to flames. Similarly, there is also the shot of Scarlett declaring at Tara (her planation home) that she would never go hungry again. The sky backdrop is so vividly lit, and the indomitable spirit of life that resides in Scarlett's chin-up, upright silhouette speaks volumes about her ability to survive the war and the destruction of her beloved Tara.

Gone With The Wind is one of the greatest films of all-time as it transcends time itself. It is still as relevant today as it was in 1939 (the greatest year in film history by the way, as The Wizard of Oz and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington were also released this year). It is truly an epic of epic proportions, the best of its day by a wide margin, and not to be eclipsed for decades.

This is a wonderful movie experience; one you will never forget. And unlike Rhett Butler, at the end of this film dear reader, you frankly will "give a damn".

What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

Ms Hepburn is not the proto-feminist here which makes a change. The film actually presents a surprisingly good story. There's a man and a woman working together without any obvious female chauvinism attempting to emasculate the man or put him in the shade.

However the original book presented the romance between the returning missionary and the habitual drunk, it's an innocent love story in the movie. The booze is disposed of in the "first reel", and the two combine their talents in a more or less egalitarian symbiosis. There's quite a bit of excitement, too, as the unlikely pair shoot the rapids and fight Germans and insects.

When his village is pillaged shortly after WW 1 outbreak, the Reverend (Morley)dies of shock, leaving only his sister (Hepburn) to fend for herself. Enter Mr. Charlie Allnut (Bogart, winning his only Oscar) the uncouth, hard drinking skipper of the "African Queen", a boat of 1890 vintage, unsafe in a swimming pool. In quick succession, Bogart saves Hepburn, motors perilously down the Congo River, evades the Germans, is saved by one storm, sunken by another, and is captured by a German warship. All the while, he and Hepburn have developed a romance, culminated by marriage just before they're about to be hanged as British spies. Miraculously, the warship strikes underwater torpedos of Bogart's sunken boat, is sunk herself, as the newlyweds swim to safety. This cursory review is intended to appeal to those under 50, as I"m afraid a modern audience would find little appeal in this production,once a real classic for most.

Keeping in mind that I watched this film on the subliminally par VHS option, I must say that "The African Queen" is a film that will bamboozle the senses, while cautiously telling the story about a daring duo in Africa. What brings questions to this film, nearly 56 years since its initial release, is not so much the characters, or the story, or the location, but the transition from 50s cinema to modern. Film studies coursework aside, one can tell the elasticity of a film by watching it again (over five decades later) and if it can continue to stretch, it has beaten through the space/film continuum. Was it enjoyed as much the first time as it was the 100th time? These are great questions to ponder as you watch another round of "Breathless", "Brief Encounter", or even "Grand Illusion" for the millionth time. Time, like age, can either be a blessing for films or a curse. "The African Queen" is a difficult one to pinpoint. On one hand it stars giants like Bogart and Hepburn direction by John Ford, while on the other hand it suffers from serious plot holes, sinking character development, and some over-burdening outside connections. I finished "The African Queen" today with bewilderment - it wasn't a disastrous film, nor was it the expected "breathtaking tour of Africa's wild side". There is power behind the working forces of "The African Queen", but they need to soon realize that the elastic is pulled to the point of no return, without releasing a DVD soon - they will a broken film with time not on its side.

If one asked who the five most important characters were in "The African Queen", it would be simple. They would be Hepburn, Bogart, Africa, Germany, and finally the boat itself (side note - none of these are in any symbolic order). These are all of the elements that we, as the viewer, are asked to be involved with throughout the course of the 104 minutes. Bogart is easy, on the eyes, ears, and soul. He embodied the surly captain with no care in the world. He was funny, captivating, and in control of every scene he was involved. Hepburn was a good counter-balance, but not that powerful of a character. She was weak when she was meant to be strong, insulting when kind, panicked when excited, and obviously had never been down rapids before in her life. Bogart had the swagger, Hepburn had the cue-cards and patented voice. They had chemistry, but more like a high school romance than a heated cinematic one. Bogart deserved the Oscar. They were great to watch on-screen, even as goofy as I thought Hepburn was, the pacing of the film and their dialogue kept me in motion. I loved what 50s cinema tried when doing a destination shoot. Africa was brought to the masses - in pre-production format. Campy cinematography deterred the faithful viewer away from the story because plastic mosquitoes and leeches were an eye-sore. It must have been amazing at the time to see Africa in its glory, now it seems forced and overwhelming. Then, let's not forget, the Germans. What good 50s film doesn't enjoy a good frolic in a wooded area without those pesky Germans lurking about? They were hams - all of them, but they brought a beginning, center, and end climax to this claustrophobic film. Finally, there was the African Queen herself, an aging professional that had more stories to tell than Ford would allow. It may save the day, bring a couple closer together, or even be a drinking buddy. Either way, these are the characters that create "The African Queen", whether you like them or not, they are with you throughout the journey.

As mentioned, the acting is bearable. The cinematography will definitely need a strong re-vamp when transferred to a DVD. The story itself keeps you seatbelted to your seat for the 104 minutes ... than why do I find myself so unfocused about my thoughts with this classic. Finicky with the characters , what juggles my mind with this film more of the overall platter than just one part of the serving. I didn't connect with the character, that's obvious, the story was fun - but at the same time seemed very dated and overwhelming. In one scene Bogart is afraid of the rapids, in the next leeches, in the next mosquitoes, but is never afraid to sleep outside without shelter. What can be irritating is that Africa really isn't all that frightening in this film, for being the major antagonist; I needed dark and seedy nights followed by blistering hot days with unbearable living conditions. Hepburn sweat, Bogart drank - that was about it. The boat itself was actually the scariest part of the film because of the cramp living area. While it did feel like the "African Queen" grew and shrunk between scenes, there was this sense of claustrophobia that couldn't be replicated in other films. There was tension, confusion, and panic on this boat, as well there should be, but it needed to be heightened. The terror level needed to go up one more notch - Bogey wasn't duct taping his windows.

Overall, "The African Queen" is a classic. There is never a reason to argue against that. It is a classic, however, that is slowly deteriorating over time. The sets are aged, the special effects are "MST3K"-able, and the acting (albeit fun) seemed cheap by the end. Set upon the background of the bestselling book by the same title, this is one of those that one should probably read prior to watching. Descriptions could mean life or death, and only the printed page will give us a true sense of emotion. I think I will add this film to my collection when it comes out, I could watch it again - but not side by side. Bogey is the character that steals the show, while Africa - in all its glory - seems to be short changed in the long run. Symbolically this film will be taught in film classes until the end of time, but for me, it seems to be loosing steam around each bend. I am not afraid to say that I got scared when rushing down the rapids or wading through the reeds, but I wasn't sold on the idea. Huston had the talent, he could have controlled his environment better. A classic yes, but will it remain that way? Guess I am back to wondering how many licks on the old Tootsie Pop for now...

I'm not going to bother giving a synopsis as everyone out there knows what this film is about and for those of you who don't it's plastered all over this site. I will tell you about the dvd. As a self proclaimed SOM addict I would highly recommend this version. It has loads of extras not included on the other dvd releases. Including a new commentary track (which is a cut and paste of comments (some you have heard already through out the extras on the disc) and a documentary on the von Trapps as well as a sit down with the cast plus loads more extras.

As for the actual film the sound is excellent, the picture looks vibrant and clean. And hooray for widescreen I've been so spoiled by it. You simply can not watch this film in fullscreen! You are missing too much!

If you are a hardcore fan of this film I recommend purchasing this version and The Sound of Music (Five Star Collection) or The Sound of Music (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (both releases (35th anniversary) are the same just a different package) have tons of extras not included in the 40th anniversary that fans will just eat up!

5stars - "It Rises to Every Occasion!" (Milquetoast on Acid)

Now I've owned this movie on VHS for years and years and enjoyed it so much so when I decided to convert it to DVD and it didn't work because of some copyright encoding I was really upset.
I went to Amazon.com to find myself a replacement and lo and behold, here was the 40th Anniversary edition of The Sound of Music. Sold!
This has been remastered and is in surround sound. The first time I watched it I was blown away. I caught details in the film that I didn't even know were there! It was amazing!
The special features are almost more interesting than the movie itself! Interviews with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and the actors who played the 7 children, even a tour with one of the actors to visit all of the filming locations and showing the history behind it all. I was captivated.
This is a timeless classic that you and your children and your grandchildren will enjoy over and over.

I have watched this movie fully at least 5 times so far in my short life (maybe up to 15 when I saw selected scenes). I can't think of any late 20th or early 21st century movies that even come close to beating the Sound of Music. Many of today's movies have too much crude humor, violence, and especially sex. Even some of today's PG movies are not very appropriate for children.

I believe every child should be required to watch this movie and write an essay on it at least once before graduating from high school. There are so many life lessons that can be learned from this great musical such as the meaning of family and how music can bring people closer together. I would give the movie six stars if I could. The actors and actresses (and the whole crew) of the movie must have worked super hard back in 1965 to bring this brilliant masterpiece together! I was more than impressed by Julie Andrew's voice and I thought she was perfect for her role as 'Maria Von Trapp'. I still enjoy Julie Andrew's acting and watch movies that she stars in such as The Princess Diaries 1&2 and Mary Poppins. She has a great voice and is lucky to have played a central role in the most famous movie of all time. After all these years the movie is still a worldwide hit. I am guessing it will still be a classic in the year 2100 or at the dawn of the 22nd century.

Anyway almost 45 years after the movie was made I definitely recommend everyone to see the movie at least once in their lifetime. It is the closest that you can come to experiencing "Heaven on Earth". I just wish that more stores would start carrying this movie on Blu-Ray, although the film is just as good watching it the prehistoric way which is on good old VCR! :)

Would have to be one of my all time favourite classics. It has everything to offer in a movie. Julie Andrews at her best. A movie that would never be out dated. The first scene in particular, flowing over the mountain ranges to the green hills where Maria (Julie Andrews) is standing, is an ever lasting image.

A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight training and combat. Ted eventually picks of some of Pete's quirks and style, becoming quite a hot shot pilot himself. Of course, he eventually meets and falls in love with Dorinda, making Pete very jealous. Dorinda is still devoted to Pete's memory, but she, too, eventually falls for Ted. In the end, however, Pete lets Dorinda go, saving Dorinda, Ted, and even his own soul.

This sweet, sentimental film combines the war genre with romantic fantasy. Directed by Victor Fleming and written by Dalton Trumbo, the script is wry and witty with both Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne delivering some great lines (hence the title of this review). Tracy, Dunne, and Johnson are all believable in their respective roles as well as what you expect them to be as actors. Barrymore is classic as "The Commanding General," and I loved Ward Bond as Pete and Dorinda's best friend. Considering this was filmed in 1944, the special effects are admirable and what you would expect from that era. Apparently, there are several inaccuracies in this film (e.g. there weren't any German aircraft carriers in WWII), but I simply did not care.

A GUY NAME JOE is a terrific choice for a pleasant, sappy, nostalgic evening at home. You may need a hanky in a few spots. But watching this classic film, both my husband and I found smiles on our faces for most of the evening.

Side notes: There is no character named Joe in this film. At the beginning some hero-worshipping kids explain that pilots in the Army Air Corps call any "right fellow" Joe. Also, A GUY NAMED JOE was remade in 1989 by Steven Spielberg as the movie ALWAYS.

Trying to directly compare this movie, made in 1943, with "Always", made in 1989, is not really fair. In 1943 we were at war and movies were often designed to support our war efforts, as well as entertain. Both are love stories, but written and directed for different times and different audiences. For those of us around in 1943, it is easy to understand and appreciate movies from that era, while also enjoying pictures of a more recent making, from the perspective the time they are made. My advice to younger viewers, is to think of "A Guy Named Joe" as a well acted and emotional, love and war story, as well as an insight into entertainment during the war years

I'm not the type of movie viewer to enjoy the remake of a film more than the orignal. But in this case, I'm going to make an exception.

I'm also no great lover of all of Steven Spielberg's films (although I do enjoy many of them), but Mr. Spielberg (director of the remake of this film, re-titled "Always", staring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman) seemed to have a better grasp of the relationship between Pete -- the main protagonist -- and Dorinda -- the main protagonist's love interest -- than did the director of "A Guy Named Joe", Victor Fleming.

And let's face it, their relationship is what the story is all about. A cocky fly-boy who strives to maintain his independence but is deeply in love with another woman who also happens to love flying. Spencer Tracy plays Pete Sandidge, a gruff but extremely able pilot, fighting the good fight against the Germans during WW II. His only vice is his affection toward Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne), a beautiful lady in the Womens Air Corp. But when Pete dies bombing a German carrier (which, by the way, is historically false since Germany never made one before the end of the war), Dorinda turns inward, choosing a life of loneliness and despair, until she meets Ted Randall (Van Johnson). Little does Dorinda and Ted, and Pete for that matter, realize that their lives will be inexplicably intertwined during their flight and ground time during the end of the war.

Pete returns as a sort of spirit to the pilots and aids Ted in becoming the best flyer in the army. But Ted also falls in love with Dorinda, Pete's old flame, and Pete has to choose between letting Dorinda go, or holding onto her and watching her whither into a shell of aloneness.

My biggest issue with this film was that I didn't feel the connection that Pete felt for Dorinda. He just seemed off-ish and brusque. While in "Always", Richard Dreyfuss' character really made me aware of how strongly Pete felt for Dorinda.

I also didn't care for "Heaven" -- or whatever it was supposed to represent when Spencer Tracy died -- being a military style place. In "Always", Audrey Hepburn plays Richard Dreyfuss' Heaven and Earth go-between with no ties to anything military or government related. A nice adjustment and screenplay alteration.

There was also a lot more subtle humor in "Always" that made me feel more connected with the characters than in "A Guy Named Joe."

This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy "A Guy Named Joe." I did. It's just, surprisingly, I liked the remake more.

3stars - "I Prefer the Remake, Which I Usually Don't!" (B. Merritt)

A Guy Named Joe is THE classic movie about a cracked up WWII bomber pilot (Spencer Tracy) sent back from Heaven as a ghost to provide guidance, like a guardian angel, to a new pilot trainee who turns out to fall in love with the ghost's girlfriend (Irene Dunne). I think this is the only movie in which Spencer Tracy played opposite Irene Dunne, who was one of the classiest leading ladies of her time (The Awful Truth, Penny Serenade, Life With Father, I Remember Mama, Anna and the King of Siam, The Mudlark, etc.).

The stellar supporting cast includes Van Johnson (Brigadoon, The Pied Piper of Hamlin), James Gleason (Here Comes Mr. Jordan, The Bishop's Wife), Lionel Barrymore (On Borrowed Time, It's A Wonderful Life), Ward Bond (Sgt. York, The Searchers), Don Defore (The Human Comedy, Ramrod), Barry Nelson (Airport, The Shining), and Esther Williams, soon to become a star in a class of her own (Bathing Beauty, Take Me Out To The Ball Game). Unfortunately remade as "Always" - nothing against Richard Dreyfuss, but he's no Spencer Tracy, and ditto the rest of the respective casts.

In addition to well-acted fantastic romance, there are some great air combat scenes, some of the best of its time. (Van Johnson also appeared with Spencer Tracy in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo the same year.)

If you like fantasies like Heaven Can Wait, That's The Spirit, The Dust Factory, Beyond Tomorrow, etc., you must see this one. If you're a fan of Spencer Tracy or a movie buff who likes a lot of character actors, you must see this movie. If you're interested in old World War II movies with combat action, you shouldn't miss this one!

Dutch Holland (James Stewart) was in the Air Force during WWII, but once his term was over, he picked up his old life again and joined a baseball league. He even got married to a beautiful and loving woman named Sally (June Allyson). One day, just when things are looking good for the family, he's asked to leave his job and join the Air Force again. Sally doesn't think he will, but he agrees quickly and loves his job. Despite the danger involved with flying, Dutch takes to it like a duck in water. He soon becomes in charge of his own crew, much to the chagrin of his wife.

This movie boasts its airplanes quite a lot and its popular cast not as much. In fact, Stewart requested to make this movie because of his own time in the Air Force during the war. He is excellent in the film, and doesn't seem to mind taking second billing to all of the aircraft. It is Allyson who suffers in a small role with little to do. This isn't a great Stewart-Allyson teaming, but it isn't a bad film. Thanks to the likable cast, one does not have to be interested in airplanes to enjoy the movie.

4stars - "Big Shiny Airplanes!" (Samantha Kelley)

No airworthy B-36 exists, and I suspect the same is true of the B-47. This movie is pretty much all that we have left, and thus they have become the true "stars" of this film. For a splendid 5 minute sample from this film, type "B-36" into YouTube. I also recommend the Wikipedia entry on the B-36. The B-36 is the nec plus ultra of piston aviation, and still the largest combat airplane ever made. It could lift as much as the B-52 and fly at 420mph. With the jets turned off after takeoff, it could stay airborne for 40 hours, even longer, without in-air refueling, giving it a range exceeding that of the B-52.

The soaring score that accompanies the takeoff and flying is by Victor Young, a major Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley composer of the day. I wonder if it can be purchased separately.

I too remember the extreme tension of the Cold War, and consider the USA very lucky to have survived it without a major nuclear accident. The B-36 played a major but little acknowledged historical role during the worst years of the Cold War: if storing nuclear warheads in NATO Europe was limited by diplomatic considerations, then the B-36 was the only way to threaten the USSR with nuclear retaliation--the B-47 simply lacked the range. Few also know that the first generation hydrogen bomb weighed 43000 lbs. Such a bomb was utterly meaningless unless it could be carried several thousand miles. The B-36 had this awesome capability, even though it had been designed in ignorance of nuclear weapons.

If you like airplanes; if you like good acting; if you like good stories (especially true ones); if you want to know how we got here now--don't miss it!!! Now, exactly what was going on when you were born??? Get the popcorn!

4stars - "WHY NO DVD?" (Joseph D Baptist)

I was in grammar school when this movie was released, and after having seen it, I can remember classmates discussing their favorite part of the film.

Yes, in retrospect in was a recuiting film, but you have to look at the times. We were being trained into "duck and cover". I remember crouching under school stairwells for air raid drills. People were building bomb shelters. Those were the times, that this movie must seen in context.

For those who find aviation fascinating, the photography of the B-36 is stunning, especially being in color. I purchased the VHS of the film years ago and was disappointed that it was not in the widescreen that I remembered from the theater; but widescreen was not available when the VHS was released.

I believe that there would be a great number of people who would purchase a widescreen version of this movie in DVD, along with "A Gathering of Eagles" just to have the photography of the B-36 and that of the B-52.

This is such a great movie. I do not understand why it has never made it to DVD. I blame the hippies!!!!!!

5stars - "Fantastic Movie!!!" (David A. Larue)

Colin Welland may have won an Oscar for his Chariots of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition), but in his adaptation of the Louis Pergaud novel set in the early 1900's France and later filmed by Yves Robert in 1962, this move to Ireland lacks the playfulness and innocence of the original and makes these kids from two rival camps way more brutal and warmongering with hateful language. As an Irishman, all I can say is "Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?" Sorry, but this film is full of hateful words, destructive and nearly criminal behaviour that makes Irish lads from Carricks and Bally to be nothing more than Montagues and Capulets from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and the Sharks and the Jets from West Side Story (Special Edition DVD Collector's Set). This is not a film about the playfulness and innocence of childhood, but rather the mean-spirited, thoughtlessness of unsupervised children who are learning at an early age to be full of vengeance (frankly observed by watching their parents!). The fact that these boys crush a beautiful fox with a large rock while a girl gang member calls them "Pigs" is exactly how I felt about them also. Not recommended for family viewing unless this is what is acceptable to you as a parent. I find gang warfare abhorrent and derive no sense of value from this adaptation. I find none of these boys or girls charming or lovable.

Rachel Portman soundtrack (Emma: Music From The Miramax Motion Picture is extremely typical of her work, but is fitting to the film.

John Robert's direction is dull and lifeless and lacks all of the innocence and cuteness of the Yves Robert French film. Occasional shots of the Irish countryside do nothing to alleviate the underlying violence in this film . This film is so inferior to the original "La Guerre des Boutons" and so removed in French playfulness to Irish hatefulness that I cannot recommend it for any reason other than if your childhood was full of gang warfare and disrespect and you find that alluring and cute.

i love this movie and have since i was a kid. i first saw it in a movie rental place and thought the name was kind of funny so i picked it up and i thank myself for that day every time i watch the movie, which i now own. its a story about two villages in ireland who have this kind feud and every day the kids from each village have a 'war' that ends before dinner time. its an enchanting tale of innocence, adventure, and community. i would definitely recommend it to all people of all ages. a timeless movie for all!!

I've seen this film six times now and each time is a good as the first time. The story is very whimsical, funny, poignant and perfectly enjoyable. Along with THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH and WAKING NED DEVINE, I think that THE WAR OF THE BUTTONS is tops among Irish films. The young actors who dominate the film are exceptional and genuine, and the film explores the way in which adolescents begin to move into becoming young adults and some of the harsh realities of life. Why Warner Bros. has not released this on DVD is my big question. I just bought the tape and then transfered it to DVD myself. This film is a winner across the board, and everyone I know that has seen it loves it and is affected by it.

5stars - "One of my favorites" (Justin Elswick)

This film could have been a five star story had the script-writers done a better job of adapting this French tale to the realites of children in 1960s County Cork, Eire. It's so far-fetched, that only a young American audience would be gullible enough to swallow its fantastic plot. The script-writers did a poor job of allowing the children to be children with the values of children; instead they imposed adult values on them so that it is a film about children by adults. Rather than do a film for children, they did a film for adults about children. Telling is the absence of a single football throughout the film!

In short, it's the fictional confessional tale of the character Marie and her childhood growing up in a tiny village in West Cork called Ballydouse. The plot follows the antics, at times illegal and criminal, of two boys, Fergus and Jerome, from separates sides of the river who eventually end up in reform school - not for something they actually did, but for something they were responsible for causing (although they should have been disciplined long before things got out of hand, and would have in true life). One of those two boys is now her husband and the other is their oldest friend.

In long, the story begins with the boys from the Ballydouse side of the river confronting the boys from the Carrick side on the bridge that connects the two. An argument ensues with profanities unfamiliar to an American audience but very bad to an Irish one, and a Carrick boy nicknamed Gorilla grabs a Bally boy and dangles him upside down from the bridge. At any second the Bally boy may slip from the grasp of his tormentor and fall head first into the river below. While the life of this young lad is being threatened, the post man sits in his car and only timidly advances towards the lot. Fergus comes to the rescue, but not before Jerome (aka Geronimo) calls off the Carrick goons.

Instead of realistically running home and telling their parents how the young Bally boy was nearly murdered, the Bally boys later quietly retaliate by conducting a guerilla mission to vandalize the church in Carrick. The destruction of private property is unsettling, especially against the church and if that really had happened in Cork, their own would of stopped them in their tracks.

During the raid on the church, one of the lads is spotted by a Carrick man. The boy is so stunned with fear when he's seen, that he drops his basket of eggs. The scene is humorous as he is brought inside the man's home so his wife can tend to him, and it turns out to be the home of the Carrick leader Jerome. Jerome's father determines the boy to be in shock and funnels shots of whiskey down his throat - without any gagging, coughing, or screaming from the boy who presposterously sucks them down like a seasoned adult. When they send him home with a basket of eggs from their hen house, he asks "one for the road?" in very adult and unrealistic fashion.

The next day, the Bally boys row out to the middle of the river to spy through binoculars on the efforts of the Carrick priest to repair his sign. They are confronted with sling-shots ("catapults") by the Carrick boys on the other side. "Murphy's Dunes after school", says Fergus.

At Murphy's Dunes, the Ballys bait the Carricks with their youngest lads who taunt the Carricks into pursuing them into a trap, where the older ones capture one Carrick with a net. It turns out to be the same kid who endangered the life of the Bally boy the day before. In a horrible, illegal, and criminal scene, Fergus pulls out a pocket knife. They torture the boy and threaten to castrate him. Instead, they cut off his buttons, shoe laces, and belt. Then send him back. Hence, the war of the buttons.

Back and forth it goes, each side taking their knives to the buttons of the other, until another very bad and unrealistic scene where the Ballys go to battle completely nude against the Carricks. Bare-bottomed boys running around outdoors indecently exposed. Just doesn't happen in County Cork! Idiotic and stupid are the script-writers. In real life, these boys (who never acted before) were actually made to indecently expose themselves for the camera people and directors filming them. These adults should be ashamed of themselves for imposing adult humour on what otherwise would have remained a sterling coming-of-age story.

Things grow worse and worse, each side trying to trump the other until Marie is very nearly killed by an out-of-control downhill tractor. With the destruction of the tractor and threats of lawsuits against each parent of every child that participated in the wars for buttons, each kid got a thrashing from their parent and Fergus and Jerome were sent to reform school.

Why did they do it? "...for the hell of it - what else is there", explained Fergus. With no afterschool sport, not a single football, cricket bat, or rugby ball anywhere in this film, what did the parents of this fictional village expect their kids to do? A silly movie that can be enjoyed by those who can suspend their knowledge of reality.

Even if you are not a Glenn Miller fan, as I am, you will enjoy this very entertaining movie which also features Sonja Henie (and her amazing ice skating skills) as well as a very young Milton Berle.

I am a great admirer/fan of Sonja Henie. Not many people realize just how a profound effect she had on the Olympics, all the great ice skaters still attribute their love of skating to Sonja Henie. With that being said it is incredible that she is not avaliable on DVD in the U.S. so that the younger generation can watch and enjoy her as I do. This sad but powerful video is a must-have for any English or History teacher dealing with the Holocaust. I *do* agree with many Holocaust survivors who urge teachers to NOT begin their units with such a film, but to use it as a tool that complements a balanced discussion of this horrific time period. I begin my unit with a study of poems from the book, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," recommended by another teacher, and then proceed to this video. Finally, we read the book, "Night," by Elie Wiesel. I feel all the first-hand accounts really hit home the reality of the time, as well as the need to be wary of recurrences in such hatred today.

This was an excellent movie...If you are interested in this topic, you should check out the critically acclaimed books of Dorit B. Whiteman (she is a Holocaust survivor herself as well as a pysychologist): "The Uprooted", a classic which insightfully examines how some Jews (including many Kindertransport members) managed to miraculously escape Nazi occupied countries and describes the emotional aftermaths of their ordeals, and the more recent "Escape Via Siberia", which tells the dramatic story of a Polish boy who surived exile in Siberia and joined the only Russian Kindertransport.

I am a 6th grade teacher and I teach the Holocaust to my students. This video is one resource tool that I use. It is quite powerful and the students get so much out of it. Through accounts of survivors, drawings, paintings, and vivid footage, we are taken through step by step the horror of the Holocaust and how it happened, from pre-occupation all the way until they day the war was over. The stories are fascinating, the visual images horrifying. This video is intense, but not on the "sickly" level of "Night and Fog." However, if you are interested in this subject, I strongly suggest getting your hands on this movie.

"Casablanca" is a treasure. It's one of those rare films that you can't see too often. Each viewing bring a further appreciation of it. It is Bogart at his best, Bergman at her most sublime and a cast of character actors with a personal, emotional attachment to the theme of the movie. It's no surprise that it has become one of the cinema's most beloved films. Its history is as fascinating as the film itself and the added features enrich a person's appreciation of the accomplishment of the film. The creative folk who make the film are every bit as interesting as the film they created.

I have watched this disc a couple of times all ready and this film holds up over time. Although Citizen Kane is still my favorite movie of all time this one rates as the best romantic film. Buy this film in any packaging the second disc isn't mandatory but it's nice.

5stars - "Classic film everyone should own!!!" (Carl Mearman)

First, let's go with the performances of some of the leading
characters, and let me start by stating that most of the
characterizations of the acting abilities of the actors in this film,
by critics, are often quite wrongheaded. Let us start with the three
top billed actors, Humphrey Bogart as club owner Rick Blaine, Ingrid
Bergman as his ex-lover Ilsa Lund, and Paul Henreid as Ilsa's husband,
the Czechoslovakian Nazi Resistance outlaw, Victor Laszlo. Virtually
all critiques of this trio leave Henreid as the odd man out, mainly
because the film focuses on the love angle between Rick and Ilsa. But,
from a purely technical standpoint, Henreid gives, by far, the best
acting performance of the trio (and, it's not even close). Because it
is the most restrained and understated, however, it usually gets
dismissed as stiff acting, rather than good acting of an intentionally
stiff character....one need only look at the cheesy scene in the bar, where Victor hears the Nazis singing their song, Die Wacht Am Rhein, and dares to get the band to play La Marseillaise, then look in Victor's eyes, to see that, far from what critics claim, Victor is a man of great passion and principles from the get go, and this break from his usual restraint gains in power
precisely because it is a break, but one that seems wholly natural for
a man who has been frustrated for the bulk of his scenes in the film,
and then feels he is having his face rubbed in it. While the political
implications of the scene have lost their resonance (as do most
blatantly political gestures in art), Henreid's volcanically restrained
performance in that scene has not. And, as an asides, compare that
scene with a similar scene toward the ends of the aforementioned Paths
Of Glory, where a captured German girl is put on stage, in front of
drunken French soldiers seemingly willing to ravage her, until she
starts singing a plaintive German tune of a soldier and his lost love.
The drunk soldiers quiet down, and eventually start humming along with
the 'enemy,' and slowly show that they have not been totally inured by
carnage. A comparison of these two scenes (their structure and
placement) neatly and clearly shows why Casablanca is mere
entertainment, while Paths Of Glory is great art. Simply stated,
without the character (in his physical being and internal composition)
of Victor Laszlo, Casablanca does not even reach being a good prose
melodrama.

Now, contrast Henreid's Victor with Bogart's Rick. Rick is rather one
dimensional, despite the film's early evocations of depth. His
attraction to Ilsa seems quite superficial; after all, in the flashback
scenes in Paris, and even those in Casablanca, does he ever speak of
higher purpose? Despite some wittier lines....is Rick Blaine sufficiently different from the Sam Spade Bogart essayed in The Maltese Falcon, or any of the rather stolid thugs he played throughout the 1930s? No.

That brings me to the last and least of the trio of star performances:
Ingrid Bergman's rather mediocre portrayal of Ilsa Lund. First, it's
not a bad performance, but it's nowhere near great. One need only look
at contemporaneous performances by a Katherine Hepburn, Joan Crawford,
Bette Davis, or even Judy Garland, to see how much Bergman pales in
contrast. And, it's rather apparent that Ilsa really loves Victor, not
Rick, because anyone who's ever really been in love knows that she
would have stayed with Rick, no matter.

But the biggest thing that prevents the film from greatness is that it
simply plumbs no depths, it simply has no great themes. There is
nothing in the film that is so overwhelmingly great, technically or
performance-wise, that can put it in a class with many of the other
highly praised great films of the past. Seen next to Citizen Kane,
Tokyo Story, Seven Samurai, La Dolce Vita, or 2001: A Space Odyssey,
Casablanca comes up short, way short.

On the plus side, Casablanca is quite a modern film, in terms of pacing
(and in some aspects of editing), for within the first ten or twelve
minutes, you feel as if you know these archetypal characters (for good
or ill), as if you'd already had a full movie's worth of them under
your belt, and this is part of the reason why the film sucks you in to
its vortex, and gets better, subjectively, as it goes on, even if,
objectively, it's a fairly static film, in terms of plotting.

Film critic Andrew Sarris claimed that Casablanca was, 'the most
decisive exception to the auteur theory,' but he was wrong, and wrong
for several reasons. First, auteur theory generally applies toward
films or filmmakers that are great, and while Casablanca has been
claimed as great, no one has ever made that claim for Curtiz. Secondly, greatness is part and parcel of a vision, and vision is, almost by definition, a property only a singular person can have, not a group; thus Sarris's very admission that Casablanca had more than one 'auteur' makes it also outside the scope of auteur theory, by definition, not an exception to the theory....the film lacks vision, and is a stylistic and narrative hodgepodge. Still, it does entertain, and is an interesting piece of Americana. Also, the lower the expectations you have of the film, the more entertaining it seems. Ah, the flicker of illusion!

This is a great movie. Sure wish it would come out on DVD. The tape was in good condition, although it was missing beginning 2 minutes (battle scene), you wouldn't know it if you hadn't seen movie before. Vendor upgraded shipping free & threw in a little "lagniappe" as we say down South. Good vendor.
