This sad but powerful video is a must-have for any English or History teacher dealing with the Holocaust. I *do* agree with many Holocaust survivors who urge teachers to NOT begin their units with such a film, but to use it as a tool that complements a balanced discussion of this horrific time period. I begin my unit with a study of poems from the book, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," recommended by another teacher, and then proceed to this video. Finally, we read the book, "Night," by Elie Wiesel. I feel all the first-hand accounts really hit home the reality of the time, as well as the need to be wary of recurrences in such hatred today.

This was an excellent movie...If you are interested in this topic, you should check out the critically acclaimed books of Dorit B. Whiteman (she is a Holocaust survivor herself as well as a pysychologist): "The Uprooted", a classic which insightfully examines how some Jews (including many Kindertransport members) managed to miraculously escape Nazi occupied countries and describes the emotional aftermaths of their ordeals, and the more recent "Escape Via Siberia", which tells the dramatic story of a Polish boy who surived exile in Siberia and joined the only Russian Kindertransport.

5stars - "IF THIS TOPIC INTERESTS YOU...." (Lily Whiteman)

I am a 6th grade teacher and I teach the Holocaust to my students. This video is one resource tool that I use. It is quite powerful and the students get so much out of it. Through accounts of survivors, drawings, paintings, and vivid footage, we are taken through step by step the horror of the Holocaust and how it happened, from pre-occupation all the way until they day the war was over. The stories are fascinating, the visual images horrifying. This video is intense, but not on the "sickly" level of "Night and Fog." However, if you are interested in this subject, I strongly suggest getting your hands on this movie.

I'm not a big Rugrats fan but I struggled to find a video that would explain Hannukah AND captivate my 3 year old. This video does both. I love the Yiddish phrases sprinkled throughout, they remind me of my culture. I also love that they incorporate the Hebrew blessing.

Not only was this another endearing Rugrats episode, this video also had some very informative historical data. When my fellow teachers and I decided to expand our Christmas Around the World unit, we combed your website looking for innovative ideas.Unfortunately many teachers almost have to run a "dog and pony" show to compete with the visual stimuli of today's world. That's why we we so excited to find a copy of this great video that provides accurate historical and cultural information on a child's level with characters he/she recognizes and loves. Our second grade auditory learners were delighted with the video as were the visual learners with the paperback book of the same story. This video showed The Babies playing games and eating Chanakah snacks which we provided for our kinestic learners. This video held seven year olds' attentions while instilling information about the history and culture of the Jewish faith.

This is an excellent video that introduces young ones to the basic meaning of Chanukah, and I would recomend it to anyone who's interested. It combines the basic story of Chanukah, with the humor that the Rugrats provide.The video does have some flaws. It's recorded in the fastest mode (apparently to save cost, but to be honest, I would have paid a few bucks more for a better quality recording) so the quality is not the greatest. Also, the closed captioning for the hearing impaired has lots of errors, such as some Yiddish expressions, and at the end when the blessing is given, it just says "(speaking Hebrew)" where the TV version spells it out and suffers from none of the above-mentioned flaws.)Still, it is not enough to change my rating of 5 stars, or my recommendation of this video, as the content of the video is, of course, the most important part.

We found this to be an informative video for our children and entertaining to us as well. It explains Chanukah to children in a way they can understand when they are coming from another cultural background. The story is clear, easy to understand and follow, and entertains at the same time. It also shows the need for understanding, tollerance and the acepting of others different from ourselves in the world today. As a parent, I apprciate holsom videos that teach a lesson as well.

I might be in my pre-teen ages where people think they might not know what a good or bad movie is but I think all ages could enjoy. I'm not Jewish and many viewers probably aren't but I never was told or knowing the story behind Chanukkah and the whole episode explains it. Of course they even add a fun storyline to it (as the Rugrats try to put the Chanukkah play leader to a nap) to help people enjoy it. I definitely recommend it.

"Yentl" is one of those movies that contain too much of Barbra Streisand. For her fans it's OK to bear, other may get fed up. For example, the overwrought soundtrack which does not even fit the movie very well, makes it overlong. On the plus side, the songs quite pointedly describe feelings Yentl has at a given moment of the movie. And when we pass over the fact that hiding of a girl in man's clothes counts on total naiveté of other characters, the movie is well worth your time. The story and especially the love triangle among Yentl, Avigdor (curiously dashing Mandy Patinkin) and Hadass (beautiful and delicate Amy Irving) is unique and does great promotion to I.B. Singer's short story. Most food for thought comes from variations and discussions on Jewish religious writings, mostly when concerning intimate lives of people. These moments make the film - among the great many of those with treat trans-gender disguises - unique and hard to forget. The 1983 flick's country looks resemble "Fiddler on the Roof" quite much - this is understandable, since the settings are similar. For me the movie has a special magic as much of it was shot in the former Czechoslovakia, which used to be my homeland before Slovakia got independent in 1993.

It will be rebroadcast 12/22/2008 at 11:30pm Eastern time. Set your DVRs. I will. This may be the only way to get a Region 1 DVD.

My daughter and I saw Yentl together in 1983 in the theater when she was in the 7th grade. We walked out of the theater, looked at each other, turned on our heals, went back in and watched it again.

The music is glorious and the story is timeless. This is an intelligent movie. There is a unique quality to the way the film was made by which it seems there is more story telling through the music than the dialogue. It's a lovely way to absorb the story, with your gut rather than your cerebellum.

I watched it again about a month ago, and the strains of the "klesmer" music had me in tears. Minors, 7ths, flats -- flat minor 7ths! Heart wrenching, transcendent, other worldly.

I never saw Chariots of Fire when it was in the theater in the early 80's, but I became interested in it after I saw some of the sites where it was filmed when I was in Scotland recently.

It's based on the true story of the track team of Great Britain in the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Eric Liddell has become one of my heroes -- standing for what you know is right even in the face of incredible pressure and sacrifice.

It's an amazing film!!

5stars - "An all time classic and inspirational film!" (S. Hoffsommer)

A classic sports movie that focuses on two UK runners as they prepare for the Paris Olympics, one is a Jew and one a Christian who holds firm in his conviction that Sunday is the Lords day and he will not run on the Lord's day, even to compete in his event in the Olympic games. I have seen this movies hundreds of times and it was time to upgrade from VHS to DVD. I loved all the interviews and the making of. I was especially impressed with the training these actors did to "become" runners.

What a fine film this is in every respect!

This is the historic story of the establishment of Israel as a nation and one man's role in bringing this difficult agenda to fruition. PAUL NEWMAN plays Ari Ben Canaan, a courageous commander of the Israeli underground who manages to lead 600 Jews from Cyprus detention camps onto a freighter, bound for Palestine. The British military forces make his task nearly impossible but Canaan is not a man to fold in the face of opposition. As the tale unfolds, the viewer cannot help but to be inspired by both Canaan and his worthy mission. I think that this is Paul Newman's best film performance ever.

This 1960 film is also superbly notable in terms of its terrific cast which includes EVA MARIE SAINT, PETER LAWFORD, LEE J. COBB, RALPH RICHARDSON, and SAL MINEO (tragically, Mineo was ultimately stabbed to death 16 years later in an alley, murdered by a pizza delivery man who didn't know who he was). Every one of these magnificent screen legends were at the pinnacle of their art in this one! Producer-Director Otto Preminger filmed Exodus entirely on location in Cypress and in Israel.

The spectacular beauty of this cinematic wonder was captured in Technicolor® and photographed in Panavision 70®. (From Wikipedia: "During the late 1950s the Hollywood filmmaking community decided that changing from filming in the commonly accepted 35 mm format to 65 mm film would provide viewing audiences with an enhanced visual experience. To this end, cameras began to be designed to handle 65 mm film stock. The first camera system to be released using this format was "Todd-AO," in 1955. (Cleopatra (Five Star Collection) was filmed in this format.) The second was "MGM Camera 65," a system designed by Panavision, which was introduced in 1956. But perhaps the finest aspect of Exodus is the filmscore/soundtrack, the work of Ernest Gold. This is one of the most inspiring Modern Classical Music compositions ever written in support of a film endeavor and is separately available, (I have also written a brief review of this CD):

In summary, I can think of few better ways to spend a rainy weekend afternoon than to watch this fine production which has a total running time of 3 hours 28 minutes. The viewer is quickly drawn into the story and s/he will discover that this is one of those rare timeless films. My highest recommendation.

**** 1960. Based on Leon Uris's Exodus and produced and directed by Otto Preminger. One Academy award (Music) and two other nominations. Paul Newman is Ari Ben Canaan, one of the leaders of a Jewish independence movement. He manages to force the British forces to let the boat Exodus leave Cyprus with more than 600 Jews on board and reach the port of Haïfa. When Otto Preminger directed EXODUS, he was detached from the Hollywood studios and independent for some years. After Bonjour Tristesse, Anatomy of a Murder and PORGY AND BESS, he chose to adapt to the screen another bestseller: EXODUS. If everybody agrees that this 210 min. film isn't a masterpiece, I didn't yawn once during the projection however. I particularly liked the way Otto Preminger paralleled Israel's destiny and Eva Marie Saint's psychological evolution. I'm more confused in front of Preminger's handling of the extremisms: between the blonde and passive Karen and the wild Dov Landau, between smooth integration and armed guerrila warfare, the director favoured the latter. Art and Life can't obviously meet. Highly recommended.

This story is both long and complex. Unfortunately, it is too long and complex for one full-length movie. The movie, overall does as good a job as can be done, for the excellent Leon Uris story.

As for acting, Paul Newman does an okay job. Eva Marie-Saint does her normal exceptional job, as well as the rest of the supporting cast. Cinematography has both great and bland areas, but this edition limits the great areas by not being wide-screen.

Overall, I recommend the movie, I just don't think it is 5-start caliber.

in german with german actors, production ofcourse;this is the almost verbatim meeting held in the city of the title where the german elite explained just how they were going to exterminate the jews entirely...the cover-up,how they would make it look and sound palapable,going over details without euphamisims. difficult to watch,but needed. we seem to have already begun willing to repeat the horrible mistakes we promised to learn from...there is an american version with kenneth branagh and stanley tucci that is as good,but lacks the story in and told by germans...it is called the "conspiracy" on dvd...

The Wannsee Conference was a critical, 2-hour event during which high officials of the Third Reich planned their "Final Solution" for the "Jewish problem." Their solution -- ship them east, then kill them all.
The film, using the last remaining transcript of the actual conference, reveals the most frightening aspect of the Nazi government -- killing millions was treated more routinely than planning the refreshments for the meeting. Anyone can be evil in the right -- or wrong -- circumstances; the sooner we recognize that evil does not arrive with red tail and horns, but dressed like you or me, the better we will be able to see it and reject it.

The Wannsee conference was the official beginning to the organization of mass killings of Jews by the nazis.

This video (another good work that will not make it on dvd) on the Wannsee conference is a representation that lasts 85 minutes, just as the real conference. Every minute of it is meaningful and well directed. There are no distractions or any superfluous commentaries. The camera goes around the table or watches a specific character to convey both the general atmosphere of the occasion and the individual roles of the characters.

I was specially interested in watching how they would depict Eichmann, after reading the description that Hannah Arendt does of him. I think it matches her description well.

A good point about the video is that you don't see actors interpret nazis as you would expect from a modern movie, but you see normal people discussing and approving the death of millions of human beings as a matter of business-as-usual.

I recommend viewing this video along with the German "Downfall" on the last days of the Reich.

Very valuable documentary.

Other reviews have found this film to be far superior to "Conspiracy". One noted its superior detail on the 'final solution' options; two noted superior acting. In fact, far more detail is given in "Conspiracy", even if there is no conference record cited to support it. As for acting, "Conspiracy" is worth a close look, especially for Colin Firth's splendid performance. Final 'footnote': As one review noted, this film has a flirtatious female stenographer whom Heydrich invites to join him in Prague . She is not seen in "Conspiracy", where there is only a uniformed male steno.. Who has it right??
My suggestion: watch both films.

I salute the actors and the director but the movie did not show the suffering of the other side. The Movie was too bias to the isreali side without mentioning much about the palestinian side. I am not a palestinian but I think that the sufferings that they went through because of Golda should have been mentioned.... I still enjoyed the movie and I once again Salute Ingrid for her outstanding performance.

1stars - "Unplayable DVD" (Nino Bixio)

Let me just start saying that I'm usually apprehensive about watching Holocaust movies. I think while the Holocaust is something that every person in the world should be educated on, it is also a subject that is overly flooded in the Hollywood movie industry. Most Holocaust movies show lots of images of how people get tortured, killed, gassed etc, all of which make me sick. And I neither wish to watch more of these make-me-sick movies nor think flooding the audiences with brutal images every year would necessarily "benefit" them in terms of education on the subject of genocide, which (I can be no more sensitive about it) merely puts the Holocaust among only one of countless atrocities human beings have committed throughout history. Yet the movie-makers make more genocide movies on the Holocaust than any other. People sometimes don't realize that other crimes against humanity in history, though may not be as systematic, are just as terrible. So I do ask that future film-makers would dwell insights into other aspects of history instead of just doing one thing over and over and over and over.
That being said, I would have to say that Schindler's List is the first "Holocaust" movie (though I do not see it that way) that truly moved me to tears without losing appetite to eat at the same time. And it is not because it is a relatively "feel-good" movie or that there are relatively fewer brutal scenes on the sufferings of the Jews (I'm more okay with watching people getting shot than watching people getting tortured or gassed, pardon me if that sounded terrible), but that the movie conveys powerful and insightful messages that digs deeper than just "racism is bad," or "there are good people in the world." It tells the story of a powerful and wealthy man who understands the importance of human lives. The end scene in which Schindler weeps over not having saved more lives both trivializes and signifies money and property: money and property are worth nothing when compared to human lives, yet they are of utmost importance because "for this...one more person." This powerful message is simply a tear-jerker: a man who did more than anyone else looks around him and weeps shamefully over still having, in his pockets, some potential means to save more lives, little as they are left. From this, Schindler's list teaches something that can be applied to the daily life of anyone, that money and property should be used for those human lives in need to be saved.
The Holocaust aspect of the this movie also shed light on the account much more than other Holocaust movies I've seen. It not only shows madness in the face of evil, but just how inhuman the Jews look to the Nazis. The Nazis would just go about their business and socialize while shooting the Jews like squashing bugs as hobbies. The look on the Nazi's faces are not sadism so much as apathetic, which puts the horror and madness onto a different level, it truly defines the extremities of segregation, to be put on the bottom of the barrel.
the last thing I want say is that the score is simply brilliant. This is truly one of the best films in history in every way.

1stars - "Misleading" (Hoffman)

This movie needs to be seen by everyone, and the special features are just as good and informative as the movie. The movie is probably the highly of Spielberg's career. It is about Oscar Schindler who was a Nazi and who saved many Jews during the Holocaust. This movie is shown in black and white, which really draws the audience into the movie and the feel of the 1940s. The only color is a red coat on a little girl, which Spielberg does intentionally so pay attention to that. This is emotionally charged and I usually cry a great deal during this movie. It is an absolute must see by everyone. It is long but is worth it. If you only get one movie this year it should be this one! Amazing from start to finish.

Schindler's List is a rarity in contemporary filmmaking. It delivers a heart-wrenching story with Oscar-worthy performances, while demanding a soul-examining response from the viewer. How many movies can make that claim? And while not overtly addressing religious themes, the film leaves no doubt as to the answer to that age-old question: Does evil exist?

Set against the backdrop of World War II Poland, and based on a true story, the movie follows the life of German businessman Oscar Schindler (Liam Neeson). Always the entrepreneur, Schindler hatches a plan to start a factory and outfit it with cheap, Jewish slave labor. His idea, while bankrupt in one sense, was anything but in a financial sense as he becomes quite wealthy. Along the way, however, Schindler begins to question the brutality and depravity of the German captors overseeing the prison camp. Spurred on by a silent, inner awakening, he begins a campaign to personally see to the safety of "his" Jews, those who worked in the factory for him. Aided by his loyal accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley), Oscar figures a way to "buy" all 1100 of the workers from the camp Commandant Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes) and move them to safety. The plan ultimately is successful and the area is liberated by the Red Army soon after.

It must be noted of the cast how moving and riveting the performances are from top to bottom, but particularly that of Neeson as Oscar Schindler. His portrayal is instantly believable on all levels, as you feel personally involved in the events that transpire. Never before have I sat in such rapt attention, waiting to see where he would take me next.

One question that inevitably comes up amid any discussion of the Holocaust is that of where was God during this atrocity? How could He let so many of His people die? Among Jews in particular, the topic is especially sensitive. Some feel, such as survivor and noted author Eli Wiesel, that God abandoned the Jews, allowing the Holocaust in fact as some sort of punishment. Others though insist that God is still sovereign and that it is all part of his plan for the Jewish people.

In any event, Schindler's List is a must-see film that deals with a depressing and horrifying subject in the best way possible. Having reservations about it before I watched it, I can honestly say that I am glad I saw it and am a better person for it.

This is one of the best and most objective documentaries on the Arab-Israeli conflict. It covers the origins of this conflict since the days of the British mandate during which the mandate power failed to coerce coexistence of the two communities, the native Arabs and the growing Jewish one that was flooding into Palestine not only from oppressive Nazi Europe but also from other non-aligned countries around the world including Ottoman Arab states that prior to the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, did not show any significant hostility toward their Jewish communities.
The British mandate came to an end on May 15, 1948 when David Ben Guerion - Israel's first president - announced the creation of the state. This announcement made the armies of five surrounding Arab countries namely Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon invade Palestinian in an attempt to restore the status quo in favor of the Arab community and wipe out the new infant Jewish state.
But unfolding events showed that while the Israelis had carefully done their homework by raising funds from Jews in the Diaspora, arming their militias and conscripting most of their able fighters, the Arabs had underestimated the Jews by sending in small armies without enough ammunition. The Jewish victory resulted in some Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in some areas. When the Arabs propagated such news to win sympathy of the world, they had actually spread fears among further Palestinian villagers who further flee their hometowns.
But the conflict was not over in 1948 after Palestine was divided and in 1967, a rematch between the Arabs under the leadership of Egyptian dictator Gamal Abdul-Nasser and Israel resulted in further humiliating losses for the Arabs and this time Israel swept the whole of historic Palestine land along with the Egyptian Sinai and the Syrian Golan. A third war in 1973 resulted in a stalemate and opened negotiations that led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979, and Jordan and the Palestinian Liberation Organization in 1993.
The film is extremely well researched and narrated and the footages it has are extremely valuable. If you are interested in the Arab-Israeli conflict, this film should find its way to your library.

5stars - "Passover with the RugRats" (Dean K)

Okay, so maybe it's not the MOST accurate representation of a biblical story that I've ever seen, but it's definitely my favorite! Children of all ages will delight in the creativity that Angelica, Tommy, Chuckie, and the gang bring to this video. If you're offended by the historical inaccuracies, take a moment to consider the audience toward whom the video is directly, and appreciate that Nickelodeon is attempting to educate our children. You can always go back and make minor changes in your kid's understanding of the story later on. Besides, they'll probably be thankful that the story was presented in such a fun way.

Best Rugrats episode EVER. This episode exceeds all other Rugrats episodes. OK so it is not 100 per cent true to life but it is a CARTOON. I mean how often do Hollywood get it spot on not very often if I remember well. The babies and the adults all get locked in the attic one by one and all hear and take part in the exodus. Angelica as Pharaoh, well I will never look at the Sphinx in the same light again, and the mobile phone with the cartouch's on was just so HER. No the story is not the one we read in the Good Book but it is fun and there are some good one liners (from the adorable Miss P)and that is how we should view it. Watch it and SMILE.

I am Jewish, so, I know a lot about Passover, and, believe me, this movie STINKS! Why? It's UNACCURATE. How so, you ask? Let me give you a "few" examples:-There were no telephones back then!-Pharoah's SISTER found Moses, not Pharoah, and there was a prince named Ramessis who which Moses became "brother" to him. Is there a Remessis in this movie? NO.-Temples were not upside down-There were babies killed due to Pharoah's fear of them being killed. In this the Jews are BABIES! And they seemed happy doing the work!-There were candy bars in this movie (dumb)-The red marks on doors were paint in this movie, when it was supposed to be blood!-And many more!Someone told me "Oh but they don't want to scare children!" Well I listened to the true story od Passover and I wasn't scared!How dare Nickelodeon thrashes Jewish history just so they can make a quick buck? This isn't the only cartoon that ruined Jewish holidays. Hey Arnold! (probably the only Nick Toon I like) had an episode called Harold's Bar Mitzvah and it made me mad! Once again, that episode was innacurate. Nick wouldn't know the difference between Psalm and The Gates Of Prayer!I encourage you to do not waste your money! They show this inaccurate film every year! What have they done to poor Moses? They made him look like a fool that's what! Just watch the Prince of Egypt. It's MUCH better. ....

Personally, I bought this video to show to my second grade students, but now I look foward to sharing it with my children. The Rugrats depict the story of Passover with some minor changes so as to not frighten young children. It's interesting and historically accurate (except for those few age appropriate changes). My students had a ball watching it and were able to recall much of the information about Passover afterwards. It's a movie for the whole family.
